Welcome from our President and CEO We are so pleased that you are joining us for this very special evening. Tonight is all about champions—our honorees who have made wonderful contributions to our community on and off the field, and our campers with special needs who face and overcome incredible challenges each day. Brad Stillman, President
Inclusion is an integral part of the fiber of the Center. Our mission statement stresses our “welcoming and inclusive environment.” Every summer, nearly 100 campers age 4 to 21 with special needs are welcomed and included into all Camp JCC programs and activities.
Offering an inclusive camp program requires that we hire additional counselors and medical personnel, provide lift-equipped buses, offer other adaptive equipment, and provide extensive training to staff. Unfortunately, we cannot provide all of these services on passion alone. Michael Feinstein, CEO
By being here tonight, you have helped make it possible for our campers with special needs to be fully included at Camp JCC alongside their typically-developing siblings and peers. The funds we raise determine how many counselors we can hire—which determines how many inclusion campers we can serve. It is only through your support that we can continue to do what we do each year. On behalf of all of the children who will benefit this summer, we want to thank all of our honorees, our Dinner co-chairs Anita and Arthur Polott and Heather and Andrew Sachs who embraced their roles with incredible dedication and passion, our devoted host committee, and especially all of you who have come out tonight to support these children and families. With sincere gratitude,
Brad Stillman Michael Feinstein President, Board of Directors Chief Executive Officer

Welcome from the Co-Chairs Dear Friends, Welcome to the 22nd Annual Dinner of Champions: Where every all-star is Included! We are so pleased that you are joining us tonight to celebrate all the honorees and support the wonderful inclusion programs at the JCC of Greater Washington. We are very honored to serve as co-chairs for this year’s Dinner of Champions. We are Camp JCC parents who have been touched by the uniqueness and magic of Camp JCC, though in different ways. Arthur and Anita have typically-developing campers who have benefitted from the diversity of the camp and who have become more empathetic and sensitive to the challenges that some of their camp friends face. Andrew and Heather have a child in the inclusion program who has benefitted from the opportunity to play and learn alongside her typically-developing peers, and to flourish in this supportive and loving environment. Our experience is not unique. Camp JCC’s inclusion program has had a significant, positive impact on so many people—on campers, counselors, staff, families and our community as a whole. Everyone benefits from the JCCGW’s inclusion programs because they teach us to value and celebrate the similarities and differences in each other. These past months working together on this event, with the support of an amazing committee of lay leaders and staff, has been a true labor of love. We thank the Dinner of Champions Committee for all their hard work, our wonderful emcee Chris Gordon from NBC4, the dedicated JCCGW staff and all of the ‘behind the scenes’ people who helped make tonight a reality. This is a tremendous celebration of all that is possible when we work together as a community. Thank you for your generosity and support. Sincerely,

THE JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER OF GREATER WASHINGTON
For over 100 years, the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington has provided a wealth of recreational, cultural and educational activities for our community in a warm, welcoming and inclusive environment. Today, that legacy continues as we serve infants to seniors with thousands of diverse programs, services and classes, combining traditional favorites with new trends and topics. The JCCGW welcomes you—regardless of race, religion, age or ability. People gather at the Center and locations around town to see friends and make new connections, to exercise their mind, body and soul, and to feel part of a larger community while continuing to explore and develop their personal identity.
CAMP JCC
Camp JCC provides hundreds of children of all abilities nonstop fun and unforgettable memories. Our summer programs for children, teens and young adults create strong Jewish values, build lasting friendships, and provide a foundation for your child’s future. Each summer, campers fill the fields, pools and building with fun, laughter and ruach (spirit).

CAMP JCC INCLUSION PROGRAM
The Camp JCC Stanley S. Bender Inclusion Program is nationally recognized for setting the U.S. standard for inclusion in a recreational setting. Here, individuals with special needs are fully included and embraced for what they CAN do. We offer physical support, one-on-one assistance, sign language interpretation, and other resources necessary for them to participate in any Center program. We do not charge families extra for these services. This past summer, Camp JCC provided support to 65 campers in the inclusion program and 30 campers in Kochavim, our inclusion camp for 12 to 21 year-olds. This year, our special needs program is providing support to four children in our after school program. More than half of our inclusion campers have at least one sister or brother in Camp JCC, which may be the only program where siblings can participate together. In fact, the Camp JCC inclusion program may provide the only opportunity for children with disabilities to have a summer camp experience. Camp JCC’s inclusion program has had a significant, positive impact on campers, counselors and families for more than two decades. Many campers (with special needs and without) and counselors have gone on to become advocates for individuals with disabilities!

EDWIN BERNARD KAHNz”l “Eddie Kahn, one of the original eleven Redskins who made the famous goal-line stand against the Giants there on the 1-yard line in Griffith Stadium in the opening game of the 1937 season. That night when the Washington Redskins were born.” - Corinne Griffith, My Life with the Redskins One of the founding members of the Washington Redskins, Edwin (Eddie) Bernard Kahn was born in New York City, November 9th, 1911. Nicknamed “King Kong” in his years as a guard for the North Carolina Tar Heels, he was All-Southern Conference in 1933-34 and Jewish All America in 1934. Kahn joined the Boston Redskins in 1935. He won a starting position in the 1936 season, and helped the team to their first winning season (7-5) and the Eastern Division title. Kahn was selected to the 1936 all-NFL 2nd team, and in 1937 the Redskins – and Kahn – moved to Washington. With the addition of Sammy Baugh, the team improved their regular season record to 8-3 and beat the Chicago Bears to win the NFL championship. Kahn played in 10 games, notably scoring a touchdown on a fumble recovery. October 1938 featured a famous full-page picture of Kahn, taken by Carl Mydans, in Life Magazine. Kahn retired from football at the end of the 1938 season. Kahn served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army infantry in World War II. He was wounded in the invasion of Kwajalein, and died of wounds incurred in the invasion of Leyte in the Philippines on February 17, 1945. He is survived by his sister, Edna May Schneider.

Joe Yasharoff Joe Yasharoff was born in England, and lived in Tel Aviv and Palo Alto before moving to Maryland when he was eight years old. Never did he dream of a career in sports television that would last over 25 years and bring him up close and personal to some of the greatest athletes and sporting events of the last quarter century. The Walt Whitman High School and University of Maryland grad started his television career at WTTG (now Fox5) in 1986 working there for almost 15 years serving as Executive Sports Producer for JCC Hall of Famers Steve Buckhantz and Dave Feldman. In 2001 he was one of the original hires at Comcast SportsNet MidAtlantic where he is now the Managing Editor of News. Joe has won 11 Emmy awards over the years. Some of his “greatest hits” include creating the Ovech-kam, producing the “Oh RG3, Oh RG3” video last December that received over 240,000 hits on Comcast SportsNet’s website and signing country singer Maggie Rose to write CSN’s football theme song, “Get Ya Game On.” He also brought James Brown and Gary Williams to the network as analysts. One of Joe’s biggest career thrills was covering Super Bowl XXII in San Diego in 1988 when he stood in the end zone where Doug Williams famously threw four touchdowns in the second quarter to beat the Broncos. On the playing field, his biggest thrill was being a part of the 1979-80 JCC National Championship team coached by Jackie Loube. Athletically it’s been all downhill from there except for an occasional nice shot on the golf course and the tennis court. Joe is most proud of his amazing family: wife Nancy and daughters Hannah and Olivia and is thrilled to be joining his mom, Halina Yasharoff Peabody, in the JCC Hall of Fame. He dedicates this wonderful honor to one of his biggest fans, his father Norbert Yasharoff, who died in January, and to his brother Dov who has Down syndrome.

A MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY Greetings, Welcome to the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington’s (JCCGW) 22nd annual Dinner of Champions. Each year, the JCCGW inducts Jewish Athletes and sports figures into the Greater Washington Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and honors an individual from the community who has been involved in public service and made a difference to society. The proceeds from The Dinner of Champions is the primary funding source for the Jewish Community Center’s Camp JCC. For over 30 years, Camp JCC has offered the largest fully-inclusive summer program for children with a full range of disabilities in the Greater Washington, DC area. Congratulations are in order to Jeffrey Z. Slavin as the 2013 recipient of the Irene and Abe Pollin Humanitarian Award. In addition to serving as Mayor of the Town of Somerset, he has been a generous supporter of numerous non-profits in Montgomery County. Jeffrey was also the founding board chair of the county’s first “Nonprofit Village”, where nonprofits collaborate to increase their effectiveness and efficiency. The 2013 Sports Hall of Fame inductees are Mark Ein, Edwin Bernard Kahn, Michael Schwimer, Joe Yasharoff, Rachel Chernikoff Zang and Julie Zetlin. Diana Bender-Bier, Sara Bender-Bier, Madison Cannon, Marissa Cannon, Josh Fried, Bergen Kassoff and Alex Witkin will receive the Hyman M. and Phillip D. Perlo High School Athlete Award. Congratulations to all of the 2013 honorees on your recognition and outstanding performances. Here in Maryland we are fortunate to have one of the strongest and most vibrant Jewish communities in the world. The 2013 Dinner of Champions theme, “Where Every All-Star is Included” is in keeping with the ideals of the O’Malley-Brown administration, where we strive to create opportunities for more people rather than fewer. We believe in equal rights, inclusion and respect for the dignity of every individual. I thank JCCGW for maintaining the belief that each individual can make a difference and each of us must try. Shalom. Sincerely,
Governor

Dear Friends: It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington’s 22 nd Annual Dinner of Champions: Where Every All-Star is Included. Thank you all for being here tonight to support JCCGW’s nationally-recognized inclusion program. Camp JCC gives children with disabilities a unique opportunity to discover themselves in new ways and build lasting connections through participation in a range of activities alongside their typically-developing peers. Programs like this are vital for our future because they encourage our next generation to embrace the values of diversity and inclusion that will in turn create a better Maryland and a better world. Since its founding over a century ago, the JCCGW has been an instrumental force for positive change in the Washington metropolitan area. I believe strong communities are built, not born, and they’re built on the efforts of men and women like you who are making a real difference in the lives of our neighbors. Congratulations to all of this evening’s honorees and award winners, including Mayor Jeffrey Slavin, who is being honored with this year’s Irene and Abe Pollin Humanitarian Award. I want to personally thank you, Mayor Slavin, for your decades of public service, not only as an elected official, but as a dedicated member of the community. November 23, 2013 Dear Friends: It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to the 22nd Annual JCCGW Dinner of Champions and extend my heartfelt congratulations on behalf of Montgomery County residents to all of the past and new 2013 Jewish Sports Hall of Fame inductees, the recipient of the Irene and Abe Pollin Humanitarian Award and the recipients of the Philip D. Perlo High School Athlete Award. We are fortunate to have such stellar role models right here in Montgomery County. It is my pleasure to celebrate the JCC’s nationally recognized programs which serve individuals with disabilities. This year’s Sports Hall of Fame inductees are Mark Ein, Joe Yasharoff, Rachel Chernikoff Zang, Julie Zetlin and Edwin Bernard Kahn (posthumously) and they are a source of inspiration and admiration for all. It is also fitting that Jeffrey Slavin is this year’s recipient of the Irene and Abe Pollin Humanitarian Award. Mr. Slavin is the founding board chair of Nonprofit Village, where nonprofits co-house to increase their effectiveness and efficiency. He has also been a longtime leader of Washington Grantmakers, the Washington Area Women’s Foundation, Leadership Montgomery and a host of other collaborative efforts to increase philanthropy and strengthen nonprofits in our region. He was also named Philanthropist of the Year by the Community Foundation of Montgomery County in 2011. Diana Bender-Bier, Sara Bender-Bier, Madison Cannon, Marissa Cannon, Josh Fried, Bergen Kassoff and Alex Witkin are the Hyman M. and Phillip D. Perlo High School Athlete Award recipients. Through their extraordinary accomplishments, they exemplify student athletes of whom all Montgomery County residents can be proud. October 28, 2013 Dear Mayor Slavin, Please accept my sincere congratulations on receiving the 2013 Irene and Abe Pollin Humanitarian Award from the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington. Montgomery County has been very fortunate to have been the beneficiary of not only your public service, but of your extraordinary philanthropic efforts. As the founding chair of Nonprofit Village, your efforts to strengthen the work of our County’s many Non-Profits has increased the quality and consistency of the services provided to our most in need residents. Your charitable efforts at Washington Grantmakers have led to the funding of a multitude of organizations and causes. In 2009, our nation faced an economic downtown and a nationwide effort to tighten budgets ensued. When asked how he planned to deal with the downturn at the Sanford & Doris Slavin Foundation, Mayor Slavin responded “this is the time to step up to the plate, not to cut back, to maintain, or increase…[with] so many people in need, we decided to ramp up our contributions.” At a time when others could not, Mayor Slavin stepped up. Mayor Slavin, this award appropriately recognizes your generosity and benevolence. I have no doubt you will continue to be a blessing to our community.
Warmest Regards,
Roger Berliner Councilmember, District 1 Montgomery County Council
