CENTER STORY There’s Something Special about Our Members…

Meet Tania Condarco Physician Tania Condarco was born in Bolivia and moved with her family to Tampa, Florida, when she was 10 years old. She received an undergraduate degree from Northwestern, and graduated from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. She interned at the University of Maryland Medical Center in internal medicine, and completed a fellowship at National Institutes of Health in endocrinology.

I converted to Judaism when I was in medical school. My conversion was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. It felt as though I had found the meaning that I had been searching for. It was not until we came to the JCC that I started to really feel part of the Jewish community.

A medical reviewer at the Food and Drug Administration, Tania also volunteers at Mobile Med Clinic, “a low income clinic that does wonders,” seeing patients with endocrine problems. Read on to learn more about Tania.

Inclusion is Belonging Message from Michael I miss Jay. Have you noticed that he hasn’t been in the lobby? Jay Kaufman began as our greeter about 5 years ago. Every day you could find him sitting in the lobby in his wheelchair next to his aide. Jay has cerebral palsy, which limits his mobility and vision. Despite any physical challenges, Jay knows almost everything going on in the Center and can help direct people to where they need to go. Jay has been struggling with his health over the last six months and has not been able to fill his position although, as I write, we are expecting his imminent return. Jay has been on my mind even more of late because February was Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month (JDAIM) which was established in 2009 to be “a unified effort among Jewish organizations worldwide to raise awareness and foster inclusion of people with disabilities and those who love them.” Years ago, Jay was in our Camp JCC inclusion program. Now he lives in a group home run by the Jewish Foundation for Group Homes (JFGH) and serves as our greeter. Jay is beloved by our staff and many members. I had to chuckle when he told me that he was worried about keeping his job because he was out sick. I don’t think anyone here has more job security than Jay!

Jay Kaufman, JCCGW Greeter

“Inclusion permeates our Center. Inclusion is belonging.” Including people with disabilities is a core principle that is found in our Jewish texts. In Leviticus we read, “You shall not insult the deaf, or place a stumbling block before the blind. You shall fear your God: I am the Lord.” This is interpreted as more than a call to do no harm, it is a call to proactively create an environment that enables everyone to participate; after all, each person is created in God’s image (B’tzelem Elhohim) and is of infinite value.

According to the Disabilities Statistics Annual Report, almost 20% of the general In recognition of JDAIM, we again hosted population reports having at least one MC Live, an evening of comedy to benefit disabling condition. ARTS & CULTURE POLINGER ARTISTS OF EXCELLENCE CONCERT SERIES

GOLDMAN ART GALLERY

by Gerald Wartofsky | March 13-April 24

Jennifer Koh & Shai Wosner, Violin + Piano

Responses: a Survey of Narrative Paintings

Please join us for a reception with the artist on March 13, 12-2 p.m. For more than six decades, Gerald Wartofsky’s work has evolved, exploring a myriad of themes while always weaving into his work ethereal, sometimes whimsical, Jewish lore. His work can be characterized as a collection of visual narratives, capturing the soul of the subject, often through allegory and Jewish symbols.

With their Bridge to Beethoven project, dynamic violinist Jennifer Koh and virtuoso pianist Shai Wosner continue their recent partnership, exploring the impact and significance Beethoven has had on contemporary composers, not only as a cornerstone of classical music but as a universal, culture-crossing source of inspiration. Tickets are $31 for individuals under age 40, $36 for adults age 62+, and $41 for all others. To purchase tickets, please visit jccgw.org/concerts or call the box office at 301.348.3872.
