CENTER STORY Partnering with IAC to Enhance Jewish Life in Our Community By Andrea Kronzek When our community comes together at the Bender JCC on May 21 at Israel Fest 2017, presented by The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, the Israeli American Council (IAC) is one of the many area organizations that will have played a part in coordinating and implementing this celebration of the State of Israel’s 69th birthday. LEADERSHIP Looking Back with Pride and Thanks Message from Lisie It is hard to believe that it has been almost two years since I became the board chair of the Bender JCC. A lot has happened since then. Most notably, we went from being called the JCC of Greater Washington to the Bender JCC of Greater Washington. But many other milestones have passed. We completed renovations on the Bender Early Childhood Center, the indoor pool and the locker rooms. We held our first multifaith film festival. We have partnered with more organizations than ever before to offer outstanding programs that are first in class. I could not be more proud to have served our J in this way. It has been a long journey

for me. When I finish my chair position, I will have been on this board for 14 years. It has filled my heart and my soul to have been so involved here. Whether it was watching my own children participate in programs or attending the Dinner of Champions, there has never been a moment that I haven’t been honored to be a part of this wonderful place. The Bender JCC Board of Directors is comprised of people from all walks of life. I have benefited greatly from knowing each and every one of them, both past and present. The people who work at the Bender JCC are a special and rare breed.

They are giving and kind and so motivated by our mission. It has been a pleasure getting to work alongside them all of these years.

Lisie Gottdenker, Board Chair

Filling the slot that I will leave empty is Heidi Brodsky, a wonderfully capable woman who the Bender JCC is lucky to have! I want to thank everyone who has supported the Center over the years. We wouldn’t be where we are without all of you!

Children have the ability to easily see the awe, beauty and detail that we as adults often miss. Partnering with the children in this appreciation elevates the ordinary to the extraordinary for all of us. Our days in the preschool are filled with hitorerut — moments when we are awakened to what exists beyond what is in front of us. Hitorerut brings us discovery, insight and wisdom. In this Goldman Art Gallery exhibit, each class will make visible how the learning they do is inspired by the world around them and their unique ways of seeing.
