A NEW J IS ON THE WAY The JCCGW has announced the public phase of our $12 million Centennial Capital Campaign, of which we have already raised $10 million, to improve our facility, support program development and enhance our financial sustainability. We seek to create a 21st century center for Jewish life that is a warm, welcoming and vibrant community destination for our families, our community and for future generations. Welcome, New Board Members Ron Gorfinkel, a JCCGW member for more than 15 years, is founder and chief executive officer of Royal Airport Concierge Service, which he established post-9/11 in order to Ron Gorfinkel assist high-end travelers with the challenges of increasing airport complexities, overcrowding and tightening security measures. The son of Russian immigrants to Israel, Ron grew up in Holon, a city south of Tel Aviv. After his service in the Israeli army paratroopers elite Unit 101, originally founded and commanded by Ariel Sharon, Ron was recruited as one of the youngest diplomats ever to serve at the Israeli Embassy in the United States. He utilized his background in safety and security, strategic reconnaissance and counter terrorism while protecting three of Israel’s ambassadors to the United States from 1998-2004. Active members of Shaare Torah Congregation since 2006, Ron and his wife Sara Rose Gorfinkel live in North Potomac with their two young daughters, Nora Helen, an avid Camp JCC camper, and Raia Jane, who will finally be eligible to join her big sister in the summer of 2016. National Water Safety Month
In recognition of the popularity of swimming and other water-related recreational activities in the United States, and the resulting need for ongoing public education on safe water practices, the month of May has been designated as National Water Safety Month. Moving Day: A Walk for Parkinson’s Sunday, June 7 | 9 a.m.-1 p.m. | Washington Monument Grounds Help raise funds for and awareness of Parkinson’s disease, while celebrating the importance of movement for us all. Safra Philanthropic Foundation to develop a Parkinson’s wellness program as part of the National Parkinson Foundation’s groundbreaking new project, the Edmond J. Safra National Parkinson’s Wellness Initiative. The program, held at the JCCGW in partnership with Georgetown University Hospital, starts this month and is designed to improve the lives of those impacted by Parkinson’s through fitness, support, education and socialization. ProAction Offers FREE Running Clinic Tuesday, May 12 | 3-5 p.m.
Want to improve your running, avoid injury, and find out what may be causing those aches and pains? Rachel Miller, PT, OCS, RRCA certified running coach, and the physical therapists at ProAction Physical Therapy will offer individual running assessments to JCCGW members. Participants must sign up for a time slot by calling 301.881.2273. Runners will receive an individual evaluation of their running style, as well as advice about improving speed without causing injury, footwear, and strengthening and stretching, all tailored to each runner’s individual needs. In RunWashington magazine’s 2014 survey, Rachel Miller was voted best physical therapist for runners in the DC area. She has been quoted in Runner’s World magazine and has hosted a segment of a local radio show for six years. Rachel has lectured extensively to local running groups and has completed six marathons. She has served as medical coordinator of many running events.

Kehillah Revisited The exhibit “Kehillah Revisited: Expanding the Concept of Community” was featured in the JCCGW’s Goldman Art Gallery last month. Through the work, photographs and words of JCCGW Preschool and TK students, teachers and families, the exhibit reflected the story of life in the school. It explored the meaning of kehillah, our community, through the lens of collaboration.

Royal Assassinations in the Ancient Near East Wednesday, May 20 | 8 p.m.
Christopher Rollston of George Washington University will be at the Center to discuss the assassination of kings, queens, princes and princesses that happened over the long history of the ancient Near East. During some periods, it was rare; during other periods, it was common. This lecture will focus on some of the most interesting and important royal assassinations in the ancient world, including those in ancient Israel and Judah.

Tuesdays, May 5-26 | 1:30-3 p.m. The Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA), in cooperation with the JCCGW, will conduct a four-session interactive course entitled Connecting in Friendship. Held at the JCCGW and led by licensed social workers Leslie Kessler and Hileia Seeger, this course builds social skills to help older adults make friends and develop good relationships.
