CENTER STORY Recognizing the Service of Jews in the Military By Andrea Kronzek

memorial that will stand in the grassy area to the Center’s left (as one is facing the Center). A Wall of Honor will be erected, and two benches will be installed adjacent to a walkway leading to the memorial.

Rendering of the revamped Jewish War Veterans memorial.

In November 2008, at a Veteran’s Day observance in honor of the Jewish men and women who have served in the United States military, a sculpture memorializing American Jewish war veterans was unveiled on the grassy area between the Bender JCC and JSSA buildings. Created by internationally-known artist Phillip Ratner, the sculpture was donated by Alexander and Ruth Adler, both of blessed memory.

Mr. Gold took the lead on raising funds to make the project a reality. Just over $30,000 has been collected, but more funds will be needed to realize the plans and for ongoing maintenance. Lt. Colonel Goldberg is a 30-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, both as an enlisted man and a commissioned officer. He spent half his career in Europe, serving in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and twice in what was then West Germany. Colonel Goldberg also flew 217 combat missions in Southeast Asia, earning two Distinguished Flying Crosses for valor and 17 Air Medals. Asked why it is so important to recognize the service of Jewish military personnel, he explains:

Three years ago, four members of Jewish War Veterans (JWV) Post 692 – Post Commander Stuart Freeman; Lt. Colonel Sheldon Goldberg, Ph.D., USAF (Ret) and Walter Gold, both past Post commanders; and Bernard Resnick, who proposed rehabilitating the Memorial ─ joined forces to make the sculpture more visible and more accessible in order to meaningfully serve the purpose for which it was intended. Where it was placed in 2008, anyone with difficulty walking or needing a wheelchair would find it difficult to reach. The expense to build a ramp or walkway to the memorial made it prohibitive to do so.

“So many people have no idea of the extent to which American Jews have not only served, but fought for the right to serve our country. They do not know that even before the United States became the United States, Jews served in many ways to defend this country. They fought in the French and Indian Wars, were soldiers and senior officers in the Revolutionary War, gained fame in the War of 1812, and served by the thousands on both sides of the Civil War, in which four Union Jewish soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor. They fought with honor and courage in the Indian Wars and the Haitian Insurrection, Lt. Colonel Goldberg and Mr. Freeman and enlisted by the thousands in World worked on the design of a remodeled

Bender JCC CEO Michael Feinstein says of the project, “We are proud to have worked with members of Jewish War Veterans Post 692 to assure that the memorial will be accessible to all, and will be a place community members can visit to show respect to the Jewish men and women who have sacrificed so much to serve our country.” A rededication is scheduled for Veterans Day on Sunday, November 13, to which the general public, along with county and state dignitaries, Jewish military personnel and representatives of the JWV’s Department of Maryland, will be invited. “Many Jewish veterans died protecting our freedom and liberty,” says Lt. Colonel Goldberg. “The American Jewish Veterans memorial at the Bender JCC will be a place where our Montgomery County community – both old and young, those who have served and those who have not – can come to honor and learn about those who did serve, are serving and will serve.” If you would like to honor a loved one or friend who has worn the uniform of one of the U.S. armed services, please consider purchasing a plaque for the Wall of Honor or a paver for the Remembrance Walk. For details, please contact Lt. Colonel Goldberg at 301.572.6168 or fitrg8tr@verizon.net. For more information about the rededication, please see next month’s Center Scene or contact Jennifer Smith at 301.348.3778 or jsmith@benderjccgw.org.

New J, New Year, New Us Message from Michael It has been a summer of change. Our reading Timothy Gallwey’s classic book “The renovation of the building continued Inner Game of Tennis,” which is about so with Phase 2, which included completion much more than tennis. Gallwey defines the of the preschool (lower level and new “inner game” as the game that takes place in corridor) and renovation of the indoor our minds in which our opponent is lapse of pool and adult locker rooms. That is to deal with change and stress: quite a bit of change in a short time. focus attention in the present moment. If I’ve learned anything in my years as a leader, it is that with great change comes great stress. Our members were stressed by the unavailability of facilities that they wanted to use. Our staff was stressed by temporary relocations and adjusting to new colleagues and responsibilities. And, yes, I was stressed by the increased demands on my time for construction meetings, onboarding new staff, closing a fiscal year, preparing for the fall calendar of events, and the need to raise the final $2 million to complete our New J. (Yes, we are still working to reach our goal.) Not surprisingly, the time pressures to complete our work on schedule meant that patience was not always in abundance. With so many moving pieces, it was difficult to always be my best self. The arrival of the New Year is just what I needed to wake myself up and begin anew a journey of self-reflection and self-discovery. My annual ritual involves re-reading sections of Rabbi Alan Lew’s book “This is Real and You are Completely Unprepared,” which takes the reader on a spiritual journey around the Jewish rituals from Tisha B’Av through Sukkot. As I think about all of the external forces affecting me this past year and summer, I ask myself in what ways I need to improve. What do I need to forgive myself for and what do I need to seek forgiveness for? I was contemplating these questions at the same time as I started re-

How many times have I (or you) been in conversation with someone while thinking about something else, sat in a meeting or had a conversation while looking at a smart phone, or engaged in distracted walking by texting at the same time? I am convinced that multi-tasking keeps us from being present and bringing our best selves to the task at hand or the friend, colleague or loved one we are with and who deserves our attention. We are always on a journey, but sometimes we are not really conscious of where we are and where we are going. According to the great contemporary philosopher Yogi Berra, “If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.” The shofar is our call to be mindful of our journey and find ways to improve ourselves. It is our annual call to consider what a “new us” looks like and take the steps to get there. One of my goals for the New Year is to be more present. I’m sure I’ll come up with some others before the gates close. Wishing you Shana Tova U’Metukah, a good and sweet year. May it be a year of peace.
