Jewish], to continue that tradition,” relates Lindsay. Lindsay says that when she went back to work, it was great to have the flexibility to switch Freddy into a full-time program, with Henry following when he turned two. Members of the DC Diaper Bank [an organization that provides diapers to families with babies and toddlers in the Washington, DC area], Fred and Lindsay have helped lead a diaper collection in the preschool for three years. “When kids at the school no longer need diapers, the staff collects them for us to donate to families in need,” explains Lindsay. “What a great feeling to watch young children already be part of giving back to other families!” An avid runner, Lindsay also likes biking and swimming. Fred enjoys cooking and Bender JCC members Lindsay and Fred gardening in his spare time. Jauss met as students at the University of Pennsylvania in 1995. Please read on to learn more about the Jauss

Have you made meaningful relationships with other preschool families? Absolutely! Freddy is still extremely close with three of the boys from his preschool class. They even come back for Camp JCC so they all can spend time together. Our families get together regularly. In what other ways do you use the Bender JCC? We love the preschool, and the friends we have made through the programs they offer, such as the Shabbat dinners and holiday celebrations. We don’t belong to a synagogue, and it allows us to have a connection to the Jewish community. It’s also phenomenal to have a full gym, with great equipment, on site. What has been the best part of being a member of the Bender JCC? We love that there are so many activities that we can do together and as individuals here. When the kids want to try something new, the first thing we do is look online to see if the Center offers it! Please finish this phrase: There’s something about the Bender JCC… …that helps us be more connected to our community.
ALL ARE WELCOME

What has your experience been at the Bender JCC as an interfaith family? What we like is how the preschool weaves Judaism into the everyday. Children are taught the foundations of Judaism — kindness, caring, things we all can strive for. The tone and language used by the staff focus on inclusiveness for all sorts of families. We love that there is a Special Persons’ Day celebration instead of Mothers’ Day or Fathers’ Day. Families come in all shapes and sizes, and the school keeps that in mind in the messaging used.

A Summer of Inspiration and Connection Message from Michael The summer of 2016 is in the books. Going into and throughout the summer, the word on the top of my mind was “impact.” Much of my thinking was about the impact that construction would have on camp enrollment and operations, on our preschool families and on our members and staff. It was not easy operating through last summer’s construction and I was nervous about getting through another summer.

One young woman from Hungary shared, “Hamsa gives me hope.” With fewer Hungarian Jews participating in Jewish activities, she was heartened to see how many teens were connected in other countries. A young man from Brooklyn shared his new awareness that “we are all Jewish and can celebrate holidays in different ways.” And a young woman from Israel learned that “Judaism is more than a religion, it is a culture.” They intend to stay connected with each other and I look forward to finding out My concerns were realized as some camp families did not return because how these 22 teens stay involved in the future.
