SHELLEY GANS

~

18 years of service

Eighteen years of dedication service, style and grace...

A

fter eighteen years of calling the JCC my second home, the time has come for me to move on. I’ve grown a family and a career here, culminating in the role of the JCC’s Executive Director. When I started, my daughter Aliza, in kindergarten, would jump off the afterschool bus and get escorted to my office where she would raid the “snack drawer “ before heading to the afterschool program. Sarah was down another hall in Yeladim. She now readily admits she would sometimes fake sick so she could come to my office for a little extra mommy time to play quietly underfoot at my desk. I used to joke that this is not a job, but a lifestyle. I was lucky that I lived down the street and the commute was even do-able on a bike or scooter. (Anyone remember my yellow scooter?) I could always run home for dinner and make it back for a committee meeting or a program. But times change and so do we. I’m not sure what the final act will be, but I feel restless to spread my wings and give something else a try…and maybe have a

little more flexibility along the way. What makes this all so hard is saying goodbye to what makes this building not just a building, but a home. It’s the people who have come into my life during my time here… beloved colleagues, loyal members, dedicated lay leaders, inspiring community leaders, generous volunteers, and like-minded community partners. I thank you all for making this a rich and wonderful life. Like a family, we’ve shared struggles and triumphs…and quite a few laughs along the way. I know I tried my best to care for this wonderful gift the community has bestowed upon us…a beautiful JCC that is not only a community center, but the Center of the community--A place where people come together to learn, to grow, to share. I used to kiss the mezuzah as I entered the main door of the JCC…a reminder that this is boots-onthe-ground “holy work”. May this place and this work continue to be a blessing. I am blessed for having been a part of it.

WELCOME JUDY DIAMONDSTEIN There are so many exciting events and programs planned for the fall at the JCC. This program guide is just a small sliver of quality programs developed by our excellent staff with you and your family in mind. We strive to provide opportunities for all to participate at the JCC because the JCC is at the center of Jewish life in greater New Haven. Being the central address does not mean our street address in Woodbridge. New this year, the JCC will begin to offer its brand of well-regarded programs outside of its walls with programming on the Shoreline. As the CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven, it is wonderful to offer three stellar organizations that strive to strengthen, enhance and support our community with the Jewish Foundation, Jewish Federation and JCC. There is something for everyone. This is the place where you belong. From my family to yours, I wish you health, happiness and prosperity in the year ahead. L’shana tova,

FEATURED STORY

BE A CHAMP!

Meyenburg Comes Out on Top in National Masters Swimming Championship Aubrey Meyenburg, 40, of Woodbridge, recently finished in ninth and 10th place out of a large field of women in the 50m backstroke and 100m backstroke respectively in the 2016 National Masters Swimming Championship in her home area of Greensboro, North Carolina. She competed in the championship after qualifying at the 2015 Nutmeg Games. It wasn’t until, on a whim, Meyenburg looked at the national rankings to see how her times compared to others around the country that she found she had not only qualified for Nationals in the 50m and 100m backstroke, but that her times were in the top 20 in the country. Hesitant at the thought of competing on the big stage, Meyenburg’s supportive husband, Jason, encouraged her to train and compete. Meyenburg began swimming year round at the age of nine on a swim team at the Raleigh, North Carolina YMCA until her freshman year of high school, when she became an immediate varsity swimmer. She stopped swimming after finishing her last high school

JCC Fall 2016 Program Guide, pg. 14

meet due to the time demands of competitive swimming. During her junior year of college, Meyenburg began swimming again on a club team at Appalachian State University. This was the perfect opportunity for her to swim in a competitive atmosphere, allowing her to also have free time as well as time to earn her degree. After graduation, she took a hiatus from swimming until she competed in the Nutmeg Games last August after only returning to the pool for several weeks. Although Meyenburg only swam for a few weeks prior to the Nutmeg Games, she begun strength training at the JCC in Woodbridge and felt inspired to test her abilities. After the Nutmeg Games, she continued swimming at the JCC pool as well as strength training at the JCC, but due to her busy schedule, she only had momentary breaks to get in the pool. It wasn’t until February that Meyenburg made time to begin training five times a week on her quest to Nationals. “Aubrey understated her swimming ability and improvements to me outside the pool, but knowing her for as long as I did, I knew she was being oddly humble and was definitely a force in the pool” said her personal trainer Patrick Raymond. Meyenburg finished in ninth and 10th place out of a large field of women in the 50m Backstroke and 100m Backstroke respectively. She hasn’t taken her medals off since!

JTE: WHEN TEENS TAKE THINGS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS

The teen-led planning process, which included aspects of budget, curriculum, and marketing, yielded an exciting semester. “We, as teens, made sure the classes are more practical, more realistic, and encourage more debate rather than just being frontal” says Sam Farbman, Vice President, JTE. “Our teachers are really great. We got to choose them which is always fun… we made sure that they are very passionate about what they’re teaching because

when the teacher is passionate the students are going to be passionate too.” With classes on social issues and gender equality, Israeli dancing, politics, and cooking for Shabbat, JTE is well positioned to engage students with varying interests. “We spoke with teens who say they need to connect to their Jewish culture and heritage in a way that’s relevant to them. They look to relate and understand their connection to Judaism. For most people, once you had your bar or bat Mitzvah your connection to Judaism just ends. This is where JTE picks it up – it’s a fun way to reconnect yourself to Judaism and Israel.” Says Samantha Fleischman, JTE President. Teens interested in Jewish topics would not want to miss out on JTE this fall. Registration is now open. Visit: jewishnewhaven.org/jte Tuesdays 7-9 p.m. Sept. 13-Dec. 13 $180/semester

JTE BOARD

FEATURED STORY

JTE stands for Jewish Teen Education – a program designed by teens for teens in grades 8-12. A dedicated board of 9 has been hard at work over the spring and summer – reimagining what a teen education program under the banner of the Jewish Federaiton of Greater New Haven should look like. “A few years ago a teen education program called Makom ended. Makom, which means a place in Hebrew, was run by adults. The goal with JTE is to make a teen education program that would be more teen led.” says Samantha Fleischman, President of JTE.

3 MONTHS - KINDERGARTEN

YELADIM EARLY LEARNING CENTER Back to School Anxiety? Lynn Bullard, Yeladim Early Learning Center Director Beginning a new school program or returning to a program after the summer break can cause stress and anxiety. Entering a new environment with new people, routines and activities can cause insecurity for the whole family as they deal with separation and emotions. What is important to remember is that separation anxiety is both normal and healthy and once we understand why this is happening and what we can do to ease the situation the results will be evidenced. It is normal for children to have separation anxiety at first but it usually subsides after a few weeks and proper strategies. If a parent is feeling guilty or anxious, readying their child for a program, children who are in tuned to much in their environment will sense this and fear that it will happen to them as well. Some children are reluctant to leave their parent as they feel that their parent needs them, will worry about them and will miss them which is actually the feeling that the child possesses. If a child is shy or emotionally needy parents may view their child as vulnerable and tend to be overprotective. There are many techniques that a parent can employ to alleviate these stresses and to ease the transition for their child and themselves. The more calm, assuring and confident that a parent is will affect how the child perceives things. Children are very aware and will internalize the emotions that are modeled for them. When parents encourage their child’s

JCC Fall 2016 Program Guide, pg. 32

growing independence and let them know that everything is going to be all right the child will feel a sense of security and trust. One of the most important transition techniques is to put a repetitious routine in place for the start of each day. It works well for parent and child to visit the classroom several times before actually beginning the transition into the program. Appropriate transitions may take place over several days with the number of hours attending increasing as the family becomes more secure and trusting. Together they have the opportunity to explore the environment finding their locker and /or cubby and exploring activities in the classroom. Some children do well with a transition object from home such as a stuffed animal, a note in the lunchbox or a picture of the family to provide comfort when needed. In preparation for school it is a good idea for parents to talk to their child about what to expect during the day including play time, snack, circle, playground time and rest. When everyone is feeling comfortable and parents are ready to leave it is important to transfer the child to the teacher before saying goodbye and reassuring the child that you always return and will be there in the afternoon to pick them up. There are several goodbye methods that work well and include winking, hugging, smiling, waving, handshakes and hand kisses. Once you say goodbye it is best to leave promptly and not linger. It is always fine to call the school and see how your child is doing after you leave.

We are thrilled with the program in every area as our child has developed and flourished socially, cognitively and physically under their guidance. We would recommend Yeladim to any parent seeking out a quality program for their children.” - Lara Nyman

“We have been grateful to have our children in a place that provides warm and nurturing care based on child-centered practices... I have watched them grow and learn, each nurtured in the way they specifically needed at the time… Thank you Yeladim!” - Amy Schlank JCC Fall 2016 Program Guide, pg. 33

CULTURAL ARTS

As a community center, it is very important to the JCC that our programs serve our community. By heightening the visibility, participation, engagement, and reputation of arts and cultural programming at the JCC, the organization aims to provide meaningful opportunities that strengthen ties among our members, engage new members, diversify the age and cultural backgrounds of our audiences, and adds a unique component to the Greater New Haven community’s cultural experiences.

ARTS & CULTURE INFORMATION

Cultural Arts at the JCC is reaching new heights. With incredible community support, grant funds from reputable organizations such as CT Humanities and the Women of Vision Society, and a pool of talented guests, the JCC of Greater New Haven is excited to become THE destination for Jewish arts and culture in the region.

Most importantly, the programming department works for you. We are interested in offering opportunities that excite you, feed your spirit, and connect you to your neighbors and your Jewish community. To this end, we welcome your feedback, your suggestions, and your leadership in curating future programs. Our goal is to continuously increase the quality and relevance of the arts and cultural offerings in ways that enrich the lives of our community.
