Yu:mi
Photo Diary Camera
Brief: With the ever increasing distance between loved ones in today’s society, technology has provided numerous ways to keep in touch with those we care about. The ease in which we can now share photographs, instant messages and conversations has led to a superficial means of keeping in touch with those that we care about. Long gone are the days of taking the time to write a letter, or send a postcard, and with the rise of social networking sites, keeping in touch has never been easier. Peoples requirements for fulfilling the human need for feeling belonged and love is mainly supported through physical interactions with others. However due to the obligations of our everyday life, emotional and psychological support isn’t always immediately available, and thus objects are often used to fulfil these requirements (I.e jewellery). The aim of the project is to explore the use of a personal object/ product as a medium of physically supporting the emotional and psychological requirements of people separated by long distances and physical interactions. The final design will consist of a mutual or wirelessly paired device/ product that is shared by both partners that allows them to communicate with one another in a more physical manner .
Yu:mi cameras allow friends, family and couples seperated by long distances to communicate their day to day events through the use of wirelessly paired cameras, abstract photography and Zink™ paper technology. As individuals take up to five photos throughout their day, the yu:mi creates a single overlaid image, which is then transmitted across to each others cameras and printed as a 2×3 inch photographic memento; a yu:mi photo.

Yu:mi cameras are constructed out of rosewood encasing a metal housing. Over time, the wood is expected to show signs of wear and aging, creating a personal aesthetic, enhancing the connotations associated with the product, and making the yu:mi camera unique to each and every individual. Laser etching on the wooden surface provides users the opportunity to personalise their cameras with any graphic or text they please, further enhancing the personalisation of the product, making it unique to the individual and the relationship in question. An LED display replaces the typical LCD screen found on digital cameras, and provides the user with information on the distance between the two paired cameras, as well as feedback regarding storage capacity and any photos awaiting printing.

Internet Addiction Control
Brief: Internet routers can be considered the passport to one of the greatest means of communication: the Internet. With the wide availability of Internet access and increasing broadband speeds coupled with reduced prices, Internet use has increased greatly. With all new developments come repercussions, and with increased Internet use, cases of Internet addiction have become more prominent amongst society. The aim of the project is to design an Internet modem and router that will aid in the control of Internet use in the households and in the rehabilitation of Internet addicts.
‘Internet addiction is defined as any online-related, compulsive behaviour which interferes with normal living and causes severe stress on family, friends, loved ones, and one’s work environment. Internet addiction has been called Internet dependency and Internet compulsivity. By any name, it is a compulsive behaviour that completely dominates the addict’s life. Internet addicts make the Internet a priority more important than family, friends, and work. The Internet becomes the organizing principle of addicts’ lives. They are willing to sacrifice what they cherish most in order to preserve and continue their unhealthy behaviour’ Source: http://www.internetaddiction.com

The Re.hab system and product aims to allow users to self manage their Internet use and habits, via the use of programmable syringes. Each individual syringe can either be manually programmed with the included software or a series of preestablished presets can be used. The syringes can be programmed to alter the way that the user is allowed to use the Internet through the control of various factors. Each syringe can be customized to the needs of the individual and can restrict or allow various elements related to the Internet (I.e bandwidth use, time allocation, URL and keyword restriction etc..)

Mood Headphones Brief: Personal Project researching and designing for social interaction in urban public spaces. Research constituents: 1. The effect of colour on mood and social interaction 2. The significance of distance in social interaction 3. The importance of eye contact in social interaction 4. Social Interaction and crowds
The Mood headphones were a result of a personal project undertaken during my first year at university. The concept stemmed from the isolation and personal space observed in urban public settings, in particular whilst commuting on the London Underground. The use of the headphones as a method of self expression allows passer-bys to observe what you are listening to at that particular moment, increasing the likelihood of eye contact being established and a non verbal connection and communication made. Working in corporation with digital music libraries and players, the music is categorized by mood. Each song is assigned a colour using a series of complex algorithms, that best represents the song’s mood, whic is then visually displayed by LED lights on the earphones.
