CAFETERIA

Acting as both a residential structure and a Learning Action Center for Academic Achievement and Success, this tower is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in Community District 7. My goal for this project was to relocate the LACASA community center and after-school program to a new structure with a program specifically catered to their schedule of activities, while using the upper floors as residential apartments. There are two separate entrances, building names, and programs that share the same structure. The outer facade is designed to mimic this divide in program.

CONCEPT SKETCH

As an undergraduate thesis project, I chose to study the qualties and characteristics of sound. My ďŹ rst step in this process began with diagraming the movement and production of sound waves. Working in three dimensions, the models presented in this project use black string contrasted on white structures to represent the direction and path of travel from a single noise source outward. My ďŹ nal prouducts from this study are three structures designed to explore and manipulate the sources of sound produced in and around their immediate surroundings.

FLORIDA LANDSCAPE FALL 2017 PROFESSOR KEUNSTIL

Studying the Florida landscape began with a visit to Fort Island Beach on the west coast of Florida. I designed and laser-cut a geometric shaped gradient inspired by the jaded rocks on the beach and the movement of the lively crabs on the site. Using this gradient pattern as inspiration, I diagrammed this site and created a sanctuary and administrative building placed along the shore line. The sanctuary overlooks the water with windows strategically positioned to make it a peaceful observation space for watching the sunset and admiring the beauty of the ocean. The space is meant to be open and easily transformed for a multitude of uses.

HOUSE III

PERSPECITVE VIEW - DANCE STUDIO

DETAIL VIEW A student in my studio class acted as my client for this house project. My client was a young woman from Ghana who wanted her house to be influenced by the vernacular architecture in Ghana as well as featuring yoga and dance studios. I was influenced by various screens, commonly used in local architecure in Ghana, that provide shading while allowing for air flow into the structure. The raised roofs used in my structure mimic the vernacular roofing strucutres used in Africa for air ventilation. The program of this house is divided into three separate and distinct interventions. This involves a main housing area, yoga studio, and dance studio, working together to create a housing unit specifically catered to my client, her needs, and interests.

DIAGRAMS SHOWING THE PROGRESSION OF SUBWAY ENTRANCES TO BE INCORPORATED IN THE MASTER PLAN

Considering the demolition of Madison Square Garden and construction of the PAU Penn2023 proposal, this project involves renovating sites on the blocks north and south of Penn Station. In these interventions, the underground generates the above ground. Placement of the new gateway track and relocation of subway entrances to Penn Station on this block shape the program and placement of the two blocks on the ground floor. In addition to the space above ground, the underground has been completely renovated to allow for more light and air to enter the spaces below ground. Above ground, two towers, rivaling the height of those to the west in hudson yards serve as beacons from afar. Each tower has a different program, but are related to each other in their size and facade.
