Mad Future: City of Rampant Growth 5th Year Thesis 2018-2019

If the consumerism and population growth we experience today were to grow to an extreme level, future urban densities would experience an onslaught of expansion. Los Angeles would reach a critical mass that would ultimately cause its districts to begin bleeding into neighboring counties, forming an inevitable megalopolis. Architecture must act as the lightning rod to redirect the massive growth from sprawling horizontally and guide them vertically. Studying the Metabolist movement, we begin to understand the techniques used for modular growth and the necessity to design the infrastructure to allow for growth. This project is a gross estimation of a distorted future that is looming on our horizon.

Thesis

D e n s i t y I n f r a s t r u c t u r e S t r a t i f i c a t i o n The world’s population is expected to reach 8.5 billion people by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050, and 12.3 billion by 2100. Within this century we can expect to see a visible increase in our world’s population, taking a toll on major urban areas as an onslaught of densification sweeps the world. Los Angeles, with all its sprawling capabilities, must be contained and prevented from bleeding over to surrounding counties when the mass densification begins. To do so, we must look back to the Metabolist movement’s principle of technologic growth and modularity as the solution to the spatial demands that will increase with population. To connect these modular units, infrastructural super cores must be constructed to feed and ultimately house the city’s extreme demand for growth. As these super cores begin to be erected, social stratification will form. Within the structure, a divide will be seen between the upper and lower classes that highlight the bleak nature that is the current meta of modularity alongside the selfish nature of American consumerism as the upper class begin to abuse their power over the lower class.

Urban Living Japan Abroad Fall 2017

While studying abroad in Akihabara, Japan, we studied the urbanscape of the hyper dense prefectures of Tokyo. Here we designed, in phases, a small commercial store that later scaled upwards to include dense housing which made it contrast with the surrounding low rise neighborhood. But this contrast was a signal for the future density that was approaching the prefecture. The interiors focused on exible rooms that open up all the way to the facades that allowed the building in its entirety to breath.

Library and Development 3rd Year Double Winter, Spring 2018

This library lies within the developing downtown of Bakersfield. Alongside the planned High Speed Railway, this library seeks to rejuvenate the heart of Bakersfield and support the local community in strengthening the students and workers of the city while providing resources to the struggling homeless. As the year continued, the library continued to grow. A partner, Sarah Chong, was introduced to the project to help it grow in scale and to teach effective team work between two designers. Also tasked with redeveloping the cities master plan, we designed the surrounding site. Our goal was to develop a Library that evolved into a community center where anyone can gain new skills through maker spaces and other resources.

Solitude Lodge 4th Year Internship Winter, Spring 2018

This project is the first of my real world experience in designing spaces that were intended to actually be built. While interning at Bull Stockwell Allen (BSA Architects) in San Francisco during my San Francisco Urban Program, I attained professional experience designing ski lodges in Colorado and office spaces in San Francisco. Here I learned real client interaction skills and organized collaborative work within the office to bring a vision to fruition. I was part of the project since its inception from basic sketches all the way to the beginning of construction drawings.
