MISSION GOTHIC BEGAN AS A ONE WEIGHT, ALL CAPS TYPEFACE DURING A TRIP TO SAN FRANCISCO WITH THE LOST TYPE DESIGNERS. JAMES T. EDMONDSON AND TREVOR BAUM WERE INSPIRED BY THE TYPOGRAPHIC INFLUENCES THEY SAW IN THE MISSION DISTRICT.

James T. Edmondson is an recent graduate from California College of the Arts is now an independent type designer and freelance lettering artist based in San Francisco, California. He has designed other typefaces such as Duke, Edmondsans, Mission Script, Wisdom Script, Lavanderia, and Mission Gothic.
Meet the Designers James T. Edmondson and Trevor Baum
Trevor Baum, born in Brooklyn and raised in upstate New York, is a self-taught designer who specializes in branding, typography, and communication design. He is currently the design director of Offline, a mobile magazine for iOS, and has also designed two typefaces: Mission Gothic and Haymaker.

SEEING THE POTENTIAL OF THE FIRST FEW CHARACTERS WE DREW, WE DECIDED TO TURN THOSE LETTERS INTO A TYPEFACE, AND EVENTUALLY AN ENTIRE FAMILY. MANY MONTHS LATER, WE HAVE ARRIVED AT A COMPLETE MISSION GOTHIC. FIVE WEIGHTS WITH ITALICS.

Mission Gothic was not the first typeface that came out of the Mission Collection...
It was Mission Script! a brush script style typeface with a friendly sign painter vibe.

Edmondson and Trevor Baum wanted to find a way to best compliment a script typeface with a gothic. To keep both types similar, they put the Mission Gothic italics on the same twelve degree incline that Mission Script falls upon: italics vs. script.
THE TYPEFACE COMES EQUIPPED WITH STYLISTIC ALTERNATES FOR SOME LOWERCASE LETTERS IN BOTH ROMAN AND ITALIC.

36pt: Mission Gothic is a sans serif built for display settings. 24pt: The shapes evoke a sense of nostalgia from a time period point size SIZ/ where letters were painted on /POINT (noun) wood and glass. Formally, it has to do with the 18pt: Mission Gothic achieves this antiquity the designers were hoping for without being cartoony or stuck in the past.
