The investigation of this project started with understanding a certain condition for domestic housing in New York City. NYC is inherently small because of need to satisfy high density of people. As a result, housing has been designed for efficiency and constructed within tight spaces, either for of limited floor area or for optimal revenue. These small spaces create a certain psychological condition for the inhabitants of feeling limited or bounded. In order to change this psychological condition, the space needs to be disrupted and introduced with a new agenda. My intentions is to take the typical row housing staircase condition and transform it into an open, sculptural stairwell that becomes the focal point, bringing light and interest into the space. I have created an internal, stairway that will invite the
dweller all the way up to the roof, where a sense of openness and spatial quality can alter their state of closeness. This internal stairway splits the house into two halves and disrupts the common Cartesian character in the neighboring buildings. The enclosure pinches away from the stairwell, appearing organic and amoeba-like, thus forming the interior spaces. Furniture is pushed out to the solid exterior walls to create a relationship and contrast between the thick and thin, dense and light condition with glass enclosure on the other side. The visual perception of the glazing will affect the closeness of objects.

The urban growth of Hong Kong has been characterized by ambitious and environmentally hazardous land reclamation projects where entire new towns are built upon. With the limited supply of land, the public zoning of the waterfront is easily erased by expanding land reclamation, the ability to enjoy the waterfront is hindered by instrusive large scale new Harbour Crossing Tunnel. This proposal suggests that an artificial landscape built around the break water of the existing New Yau Ma Tei Typhoon shelter could enhance the diminishing traditional boat culture of Hong Kong and provide a suitable public-leisure space for the residences of West Kowloon. The design intervention disappears into the site from the relationships with existing infrastructure, social needs, tradition and conflicts of land reclamation.

AUBURN THEATER COLLABORATION: SITE: PROGRAM:

The site is surrounded by existing buildings on three sides, leaving only the street side facade exposed. The entrance was designed to show the difference in program and to celebrate the “red carpet� stairs. The theater space is treated as a seperate entity, nested within the other program. It can be understood from the different levels they are elevated on. The stairs acts as the ribbon that strings the buildings circulation together. The thearter is sandwiched between two thick walls. The thick walls are designed not only for acoustic purposes but also hold the HVAC within them. The roof cafe is nested within the building on the top floor becoming the ceremonial space at the end of the stairs.

PIRANESI MUSEUM SITE: PROGRAM:

In designing the Piranesium, my inspiration comes from the interest in how Piranesi constructed his vedutas, and prison images. He constructs his images with multiple vanishing points, thus creating perspectives and depth of space. The play of composition, light and dark, shadows, foreground, middle ground and background are displayed through his work. It has been theorized that many artist during the 18th century had used devices called camera obsuras, in which the artist could construct the drawings with precision from the reflection of a view. These techniques provide an inspiration to the design and ways of displaying his work. My intention is to capture the essence in his work through ways of display and the play with perspective. The site is located near Piazza
Santissima Annunziata, apart of the National Archaeological Museum. The structure is long and narrow acting as a viewing device or shutter for works of Piranesi and Archaelogical Musuem. To use the long and narrowness of the site towards my advantage, the facade captures the viewer’s interest through a series of revealed moments. Certain spots and angles allow one to see completely through the building. As walking by the site people would slip through and weave through the building. The condition of the site also helps with the perspectival play. To achieve the sense of perspective or forced perspective the building tries to only use mostly horizontal walls through out the building.

LAURENTIAN LIBRARY FLORENCE ABROAD PROGRAM CRITICAL ANALYSIS
This project studies the Laurentian Library vestibule through its section and interior facade. The model is understood and interpreted in three parts. First, the interior facade is replicated and analyzed within the model showing the horizontal and vertical alignments, and what is protruded and what is depressed. Second, The model also folds together creating the actual floor plan within the space. The last part understands the how light is brought into the space with the windows.

The De Young museum’s is chosen as a subject to study different facade strategies and reproducing architecture through different means and methods. By referencing Zahner Fabricator’s construction process for the De Young’s rain screen, a half scale mock up was conducted. The mock up was significantly more basic than that of the real facade. The mock up was made of aluminum rather than copper sheets but the process was very similar; it included water jet cutting, aluminum welding, stamping, metal lathing and milling.
