Stories in Design Give a project life... Create spaces that inspire, spaces that awe, spaces that surprise us and come alive.

Yuanda Center Mixed Use – Commercial, Office, Corporate, Hotel, Residential 8ha (20 Acres) Ningbo, China Lead Designer AECOM
Starting Design Issues: Ningbo’s Hi-Tech District is a modern, fast growing part of the city built for China’s new middle and upper class. The client aimed to go beyond the typical development and build a true mixed-use community where people can live, work, and play. To further stand out from other projects, the client hired a consultant to come up with the theme of “A Wondrous Journey” that we needed to use as our design starting point. The theme divided the project into three sections: –– “Illusion Valley” for the shopping area –– “Tomorrow City” for the office and hotel area –– “Cloud Retreat” for the residential area
Design Solution Story: I took the theme of “Wondrous Journey” and connected it to the story of magnetic fields. Different field line textures shaped many of the spaces to make each area distinct, but still connected to a common theme. –– In “Tomorrow City”, the lines run parallel to give the feeling of forward movement –– In “Illusion Valley”, the lines curve inward, helping direct people to move into the mall but not quickly leaving again. –– In “Cloud Retreat”, the lines radiate out from the towers and fade into the landscape to break down the line between man and nature.

The journey between the sales house and the residential towers is the most important space for the client. When looking to buy a house, this area sets the mood for the entire development and is a key part in the selling process. I created three main routes from the sales house to the towers to show the different aspects of life here in the “Cloud Retreat”. These spaces focus on the three core ideas of Body, Mind, and Spirit.
1 –– All routes first cross through the reflecting pool to show that they are leaving the busy world behind them and entering a relaxing place.
2 –– The left route is about Body. Here, families can exercise and play in the open lawn or relax and drink tea in the pavilion.
3 –– The center route is about Mind. Here, a person can look inward by
looking at the delicate planting tables or let the sound of water wash over their mind.
4 –– The right route is about Spirit. Here, the Zen ideas focus on simple
elements like a group of stones or a wood screen to help calm the spirit.

Yang River Park Civic – Open Space Park 84ha (~207 Acres), 4.3km long (~2.7 miles long) Ningbo, China Core Design Team AECOM
Starting Design Issues: The Yong River Park is the Hi-Tech District’s largest and most important park. It connects the future CBD and entire north edge of the district to Ningbo’s large Yang River. The city wanted the park to be the centerpiece of the district and a citywide destination. The design should show off the spirit of “high-tech and innovation” that this district represents. In addition, the space for the park sits in a low area between the levee and new road like a big bowl. The bowl shape traps all rainwater inside the park and makes it difficult to get to the river from the road.
Design Solution Story: The main story in the design is the idea that the park is a platform. Physically, we built a series of platforms that allow people to easily connect with and see the river. However, we also went beyond that by seeing the park as a platform to showcase technology, education, promote social interaction, and contact with nature. In one example, we thought of the park as an eco-platform when designing for rainwater. We collected all rainwater on site into a series of surface swales that run to rain gardens and retention ponds. This way, we keep all rainwater on-site without the need for costly pumps, while also showing the public the natural flow of water.

Pingan Finantial Center Mixed Use - Commercial, Office, Corporate 2.3ha (~6 Acres) Hangzhou, China Lead Designer AECOM
Starting Design Issues: Located in the city’s new modern city center, the Pingan Financial Center will be the regional headquarters for Pingan bank. Along with Pingan’s own office tower, there are also two other office towers they will rent out as well as a small high-end shopping mall for the public. The client wanted a very clean and modern look, similar to what someone may find in Tokyo or Singapore. The site design was very tricky due to many space limitations. Due to regulations, we could not remove many required paved areas located in bad spots. At the same time, the high green ratio requirement made it difficult to create useful spaces in other prime locations.
Design Solution Story: The strong vertical and geometric character of the buildings inspired the site design’s story here. First, I took the strong vertical lines of the façade and pulled them out into a long paving and planting line base layer. Second, when the buildings were “shaped”, extra pieces then “fell down” onto the landscape to create the different site elements and structures. We refined the different elements through each stage based on the client’s feedback, but the core story is still there for much of the site.

Downtown Community Garden Civic - Park 0.4ha (1 Acre) Des Moines, Iowa Garden Co-Leader Volunteer - Outside Work
Starting Design Issues: The East Village Neighborhood that I lived in joined up with the city to create a Community Garden. However, after the first meeting the East Village leaders dropped out of the project, leaving me to lead the project forward.
Design Solution: I teamed up with Iowa ASLA to hold a design workshop that brought everyone together to design the garden. We created a garden website to make it very easy for all garden members to talk to each other. After the city prepared the site, I managed sign-ups for over 60+ plots and helped organize a few workdays where everyone helped build the garden together. The garden was very successful the first year. Lots of fresh food was grown and many people learned about gardening. We held weekly Sunday BBQs to share ideas and discuss issues. A center rain garden also taught people about managing rainwater.

Crescent Charrette (2 days) Civic – Streetscape + City Planning City (population ~600 people, 1.09 sq. mi.) Crescent, Iowa Core Design Team Volunteer - Iowa Architectural Foundation
Starting Design Issues: The small city of Crescent, a bedroom community to Omaha along the historic Lincoln Highway, asked us to help them create some new ideas for their future. The design charrette lasted 2 days with a small volunteer design team of Architects, a Landscape Architect (me), and a few LA Students from Iowa State.
Design Solution: We found many great assets in the city and showed them how they can better highlight these. We also showed them that they could solve their road drainage problems with BMPs that also make their streets look nicer in the process. A new plan for the downtown area showed where future development could go. In addition, we gave easy short-term recommendations so that they can start work to build momentum for bigger, long-term goals.

Iowa State Capital Complex Master Plan Civic – Government ~74ha (182 Acres) Des Moines, Iowa Booklet Layout and Design Confluence
Starting Design Issues: The state capitol complex is the image and icon of Iowa and must represent the ideas and values of all Iowans. The master plan document shows the capitol’s vision and is a base plan for development over the next 50 years.
Design Solution: The Master Plan went in-depth on many topics that focused around these key areas: –– Highlight historic & civic architecture –– Seat of state government - a symbol to the people –– Promote efficient and accessible government –– Good civic neighbor - integrate with surrounding communities –– Maintenance –– Infrastructure and energy conservation –– Be a leader in sustainable development

Capital Complex Master Plan
Access and Circulation Over the years, parking and vehicular circulation within the Capitol Complex have eroded the park-like quality of the Capitol grounds. This Master Plan provides for surface lots to be reclaimed for open space, gardens and other uses while parking is shifted predominately to structures. A hierarchy of streets reflects the role each plays in providing access to the Capitol area. Convenient parking should be easily accessible from major freeways and parkways. Vehicular circulation and parking within the pedestrian-oriented areas of the Complex should be kept to a minimum.
Objective:
Specific Recommendations: −
Construct a raised landscaped median on Court Avenue from the current Lot 1 and Lot 4 driveway west to Dey Street (this could extend as far as Kasson Plaza). While Court Avenue was previously re-striped for three lanes from four, the median would complete its conversion by improving pedestrian crossing conditions and enhancing its landscaping, consistent with the image of the Capitol grounds
−
Reduce the width of the roadway on Grand Avenue to four 11’ lanes and widen sidewalks by two feet on each side. Enhance pedestrian crossings
The State should work with the City of Des Moines to minimize circulation and parking within the Capitol Complex gardens and open spaces.
Guidelines: −
Provide clear regional access routes and directional signs to the Capitol Complex from the I-235 freeway and Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway on East 6th and 7th streets/Pennsylvania Avenue and East 14th and 15th streets
−
Direct visitors to assigned parking structures at the perimeter of the Capitol Complex, easily accessible from the freeway and parkway
−
Designate Grand Avenue, East 6th and 7th streets/Pennsylvania Avenue, and East 14th and 15th Streets as regional access streets
−
Designate Locust Street and Court Avenue as neighborhood connectors
−
Designate other streets for local access and encourage on-street parking where it will not clutter views to the Capitol
−
Design and dimension streets to satisfy their vehicular and pedestrian circulation functions and to make them visually compatible with the entire Capitol Complex Making all the intersections of Grand Avenue more pedestrian friendly and attractive, like what was done at the corner by the Worker’s Monument, above, would make Grand Avenue feel like much less like a barrier to pedestrians wanting to cross.
38
Surface Parking Lot Design Guidelines Guidelines:
Provide ten feet minimum setback from minor streets
−
Maintain existing grades for surface parking lots. Prohibit the use of berms at the street frontage
−
Prohibit surface parking within North, South, East, and West Capitol gardens
−
Maintain large trees, low hedges, or shrubs on lot perimeter
−
Size parking lots so that the area they cover will be no greater than a future building site or parking structure at that location
−
−
Plant canopy trees to shade surface lots. Locate and protect them to minimize interference with snow plowing operations. Conserve existing mature trees within new surface lots
Provide a setback from major streets (East Court Avenue and East Grand Avenue) equal to building setback of existing adjacent permanent buildings. Parking lot perimeters should not extend beyond adjacent building frontages
Incorporating Best Management Practices (BMPs) into all future parking lots will not only greatly improve the quality and reduce the quantity of all stormwater runoff, they also will enhance the look or aesthetics of any new surface parking lot.

−
Provide one or more levels of parking below ground level to limit height of structure above ground level and to maximize views to the Capitol Building without loss of parking capacity. Parking structures should be less visually dominant than the Capitol Complex buildings they serve
−
Provide pedestrian access to each parking facility as close to an intersection as possible to promote for pedestrian crossing safety and convenience
−
Provide structured parking entirely below ground level if located within the Capitol gardens
−
As required incorporate energy plant facilities on the lower levels of the garages
Guidelines: −
Minimize unoccupied space at the base of parking structures adjacent to sidewalks
−
Incorporate public/private services at ground level (coffee, child care, medical, etc.)
−
Use forms and materials, proportions and design elements that are sensitive to adjacent structures and complement the Capitol Complex
−
Limit parking structure size within the Capitol grounds to maintain appropriate scale and to minimize traffic congestion at entrances and exits.
−
Connect parking structures to a secured pedestrian tunnel system where such opportunities exist
Capitol Complex
Parking structures like the one at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, left, or the one for the Kansas City Public Library in Downtown Kansas City, above, are great examples of how parking structures can seamlessly integrate with urban fabric around them and provide a welcoming edge to pedestrians at the street level.

AECOM China - Project Delivery Standards Internal office systems, tools, and standards N.A. Shanghai, China + All China Region Landscape Studios CAD Manager + Primary Developer AECOM
Starting Design Issues: The Shanghai landscape studio is AECOM‘s largest with 50-65+ landscape designers. However, when I arrived in late 2010, the studio’s project delivery standards were out of date, half-broken, and often not followed. AECOM global had just released a general CAD standard for everyone, but local offices still needed to create all discipline and regional specific content. Unfortunately, none the 7+ landscape studios across Greater China had any official CAD managers or stepped up to take an active leadership role in developing these new delivery standards.
Design Solution: While I continued to do all my regular design work, I took on the extra role of Studio CAD Manager in Shanghai. I started up a “DD Committee” of eight other experienced designers that met every two weeks to approve all new changes. Additionally, I coordinated with key people in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Australia to make sure the work we were doing aligned with the region. I took an iterative approach of adding and testing several new tools on each new drawing package. After two years, we rebuilt the whole office system. Production work is now faster, easier, and makes better-looking drawings. From our success, many other offices across China are now starting to use some of the tools we developed. In addition to setting up the systems, I also made training materials, taught the office staff about the tools, and solved most of the everyday CAD problems in the studio.

Starting Design Issues: The Abu Dhabi office asked our Shanghai team to redo the design of two tender drawing sets after the client changed all the road widths. We had just three weeks for our team of 3.5, mostly inexperienced drafters to finish all the work. To make matters harder, we needed to follow their office drawing systems which have many differences to Shanghai, and no one was available locally to teach us.
Design Solution: I quickly learned how their drawings were structured and then explained it to my team in a clear way. I also guided the rest of the team on how to draw everything in CAD so that it matched the local office standards. The project required doing many things differently than what we normally do in Shanghai. However, I was able to quickly find, learn, and use many new CAD tools I had never used before to solve all the technical problems.

In the Middle East, most utilities usually cannot share space with each other or with plants. It takes careful work to find the few narrow spaces where planting can go.

Starting Design Issues: Both NLBP and MLP projects are similar large-scale parks that will be the center piece of the new city. Both projects also required a lot of extra re-design of previous stage work during the technical drawing stage. In addition, before starting these projects, many of the office CAD tools were broken or outdated and the design teams were new to the office’s CAD systems.
Total Pages in Final Landscape Packages: NLBP (phases 1-3) – 1,071 MLP (phases 1-6) – 816
Design Solution: One of my roles was the drawing package manager for all nine drawing sets. It was my duty to look after each set to make sure we made them correctly, efficiently, and of consistent quality. First for NLBP, I greatly increased efficiency by directing the team to use AutoCAD’s Sheet Set Manager to easily manage and plot all the sheets. Before this, most studio members manually printed sheets one by one, wasting hours, sometimes days on larger projects. On MLP, which came after, I introduced all the new AECOM CAD standards and also updated all of the outdated EDAW landscape standards. In addition, I also further improved the Sheet Set Manager workflow by integrating smart callout blocks that automatically update sheet names and numbers when they happen to change. These changes and many more set an office precedent that almost all future studio projects followed.
