RESTOCKING THE DECK FOR GIVING TUESDAY This year for Giving Tuesday we hosted a food drive to support our campus pantry The Deck. The food drive started on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 28 and will continue to Dec. 1.

Every year, Giving Tuesday, held the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is an opportunity to make a difference in our community and that’s why this year we supported a cause that lies close to our hearts—the College’s campus pantry, known as The Deck. Established in 2019, The Deck was a response to the growing concern of food insecurity on college campuses across the nation. Led by our dedicated Student Government Association (SGA), The Deck became one o f the first food pantries established on a University System of Georgia campus. Over the years, SGA has worked tirelessly to expand the offerings provided by The Deck, collaborating with community partners to ensure the sustainability of the pantry. By the end of the day, we collected well over 300 nonperishable items and hygiene products. Thank you to everyone who participated in Giving Tuesday to help restock The Deck. Your generosity has helped to alleviate stress and provide essential resources for our students. The food drive will continue until Dec. 1 with a drop-off location at the Winn-Dixie Plaza on St. Simons Island.

REMEMBERING DR. JIM FULLERTON The Study Abroad Scholarship has been renamed the “Dr. Jim Fullerton Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship” in honor of Dr. Jim Fullerton and his commitment to global awareness and citizenship. LATINX PROFESSIONALS PANEL

Fullerton, a professor of management and leadership development in the School of Business and Public Management, sadly passed away on October 31, 2023. He joined the College in fall 2011 and enjoyed teaching leadership skills to students for their future success. He was a third-generation educator who believed in learning through experience and incorporated active learning in all of his courses. “Dr. Fullerton made a difference in many lives. Among so many other things, we knew him as a caring, dedicated, an incredibly kind colleague, teacher, and friend,” said College President Dr. Michelle Johnston. “We will not be the same without him, but we are forever better for knowing him.” Dean of the School of Business and Public Management Dr. Skip Mounts also described Fullerton as a wonderful teacher, good colleague, and great friend. “His passion was teaching leadership and implanting a sense of social responsibility in his students,” Mounts said. “His compassion for everyone that crossed his path should be an example to all.”

Fullerton was an avid traveler. He visited 30 countries on four continents, and backpacked and climbed in the Alps, Andes, and Himalayas. He also led adventure trips throughout the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, and Nepal. Fullerton was able to share his enthusiasm for international education and cultural exploration with students by participating in the USG Goes Global, the study abroad program for the University System of Georgia. Fullerton taught study abroad courses in Ireland during the summers of 2019 to 2022, and this past summer, taught in Porto, Portugal for the first time. “He dedicated his life to student learning, instilling a profound appreciation for global perspectives,” said Director of Institutional Effectiveness Dr. Jim Lynch. “He was a passionate global traveler who promoted cross-cultural understanding and dialogue. Jim’s dedication to global awareness was unrivaled, and he had an impact on the lives of many students during his teaching career.”

Faculty, staff, students, friends and family came together to celebrate his life in a special memorial ceremony on Nov. 8 in Stembler Theatre. The Dr. Jim Fullerton Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship will support student’s short-term study abroad travel. Those who wish to give towards the scholarship, can visit www.ccga.edu/fullertonmemorialscholarship.

COLLEGE NAMED “BEST FOR VETS” FOR 9TH YEAR Military Times has ranked the College of Coastal Georgia on its 2023 “Best for Vets: Colleges” list. This is the ninth consecutive year that the College has been recognized by Military Times as a veteran-friendly campus. The “Best for Vets” ranking is the largest and most comprehensive annual ranking of schools for military service members and veterans. Each year, a survey is sent to colleges and universities across the nation evaluating student success, financial assistance, military-specific resources and programs, and other factors. The rankings have become a go-to resource for schools to use to spread the word about their veteran programs, to help veterans make important decisions about their educational planning, and to explain how to use the education benefits they earned through military service. Over 300 schools made the list this year, with the College ranking 28 for the Southeast region. Coastal Georgia offers resources for veterans at both the Brunswick campus and Camden Center, such as the veteran’s study lounges and the student organization Veterans Academic Learning Opportunities and Resources, also known as VALOR. The dedicated Veterans Services staff work to engage veterans in tutoring, counseling, financial aid assistance, military-related service projects, social events for vets and military families, and other activities that enhance their college experience. One such event is the annual Veterans Day Ceremony hosted by VALOR and the Office of Student Affairs for the campus and local community. The keynote speaker for this year’s ceremony was College of Coastal Georgia student and veteran retired Sgt. Chaidelle “Nichole” Phillips of the U.S. Army. She shared how her grandfather served in World War II, and through their shared experiences of serving in the military, were able to form a unique bond. Phillips said that his pride for serving his country became her pride as well. To see the full Best for Vets: Colleges ranking, visit https://bestforvets.militarytimes.com.
