PORTFOLIO
PORTFOLIO This portfolio reflects my work in the professional sector, including a range of projects and media styles. Providing a meaningful and enjoyable experience to our natural surroundings is the ultimate goal with each design, as well as assuring the client’s needs and desires are met. Effective communication and attention to detaiI have helped me meet these standards. The human connection to green space can create a profound positive effect on our mind and well-being. Compelling green space design can heighten our senses and health, and I hope to further embark on this realm of study to discover ways for implementing it into my own work.

URBAN ELEMENTS
A desire to enhance privacy against the alley led to the design for additional ivy and upright, narrow Pear trees along the yard perimeter. The understory is filled with lush, shade tolerant plants such as Ferns and Astilbe, that provide seasonal interest. The main pathway and basketball court are constructed with Brussel’s Block concrete pavers, while the main patio is with Bluestone. Bluestone steppers are mixed in amongst the Brussel’s Block to blend these spaces together, while the Ipe bench ties in with the deck material. The complimentary landscape to the existing architecture is a common goal throughout projects.
2
NATIVE GARDEN
Native Illinois plants are adapted to our climate, require little or no watering, and are resistant to drought, insect damage and most diseases. They provide beauty as well as food and shelter for wildlife, so using them as much as possible in design work has been a mindful decision. In this case, the client wanted seasonal interest, alternating flower colors, proper drainage collection, and a home for birds and bees. The plant palette varies greatly, since the back yard receives full sun, and the front yard is shady due to large existing Pine trees. A small patio is designed in the back yard, serving well for two chairs and a coffee table, to offer a relaxing hangout that overlooks the lawn and native garden.

ROOFTOP HANGOUT
Without a proper back yard space, this client’s rooftop became the best garden/patio option, so making it comfortable and usable were top priorities. A perimeter of plantings provide privacy from the neighbors, while the different heights, textures, and colors serve year-round interest. Trees on each side of the deck offere shade, but a view of Chicago’s downtown skyline remains intentionally intact. The pergola overhang provides shade during the hottest part of the day, while vines slowly twine along its pillars. Overseeing this job’s carpentry, electrical, and lighting components were new supervisial roles that helped me understand additional elements of construction.

This architectural gem of a house was rehabbed to highlight its orignal Victorian beauty and details. The landscape plan is intended to compliment the house, but not dominate it. The formal entrance provides a sense of organization, while the side yard shade gardens add a layer of woodland sensory amongst the numerous Rose gardens anchoring both ends. A long crushed gravel pathway leads to the Fire Pit Hangout, which is adjacent to the Butterfly Garden providing layers of interest and wildlife. The selection of plants and materials were carefully selected to compliment the home, but also differentiate each outdoor “room.

COLOR!
Our client desired color year round, so this plan combines an array of annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, and statuary. The selection of plants provides an alternating interest in colors and textures, with pops of strong hues brightening up the entryway and side yard. The multi-colored planters are filled with annuals and ornamentals throughout the year, with a lighting plan that highlights each pocket of interest. A wire trellis was constructed and anchored to 12’ tall metal posts, providing privacy against the neighbor as aggressive Trumpet and Honeysuckle vines climb their way up.

FRENCH INSPIRED
A French landscape design will tradtionally use geometry to divide space, while integrating privacy elements to enclose them This layout incorpates a 45 degree angle grid system of articial turf to overlay the central paving portion, highlighting this area as the focal point of the yard. The perimeter pathway is solid paving, while the side path is constructed of stepping stones atop gravel-another French staple. Hornbeam and Arborvitae trees line the perimeter to provide adequate privacy. Their upright, narrow form will be maintained over time, helping maximize the patio space.
woodland garden, a brightly colored Japanese Maple tree, and a central patio that is ideal for fire pit hangouts or
an early morning coffee break. The crushed rotten granite interior of the patio visually seperates it from the rest of
the paving, highlighting it as the focal point of the yard and creating further detail interest. The stairwell into the garage was replaced with a natural Eden stone construction, with outcropping stones and plantings alongside it.
