Allow Me To Introduce Myself My name is Jordan Coulson, I am 23 years old and nearing the completion of a degree in Design for Industry at Northumbria’s School of Design. I am a cultured designer who loves to travel, discover music and compete in a range of sports. I am currently seeking a full time design position within a company that will push my skills, allowing me to learn and progress into an industry professional.

Internships

As an intern at the Pearson Lloyd Studio, I worked intensely on high profile projects for a range of international clients. Learning the importance of teamwork and the value of communication within design.

Design Consultancy, London - 3 Months

At Techstyle I had the invaluable experience of working for my own clients, completing a project that is currently being tooled for manufacture.

Plastics Design Consultancy, York - 3 Months

Onsite design and manufacture at Plowman gave me the rare opportunity to see products move from initial stages to final creation. After placement I continued to work freelance for Plowman, designing their company logo which can be seen on all of their new products.

(Plowman) Agricultural Design Engineers, Easingwold - 3 Months

Industry Projects

Generation Y Philips required the re-design of a brand image and shaver that would attract the ‘generation Y’ to their shaving products. Working as part of a group of 6 we proposed that Philips partner up with a brand that focuses on this audience, and create a product using both of the companies expertise. We offered two examples, one of Philips-Axe (Lynx) and another for Philips-Topman. Philips-Axe shavers are now on sale in the US.

Our second collaboration proposal was with Topman. We belileved this would be the ideal partnership as Philips could provide manufacturing precision whilst Topman could input it’s marketing and style.

Using augmented reality, the Philips/ Topman app allows the user to select different facial hair styles so they can get more of an understanding of how each style would suit them.

A new approach to International Aid Current aid projects are increasingly direct in their approach. Over the long term they are failing to give communities the opportunity to develop by their own means. Empower is unique in the way that it puts well being before physical solution, offering a new apparoach strategy for international aid. Building a person’s self-esteem holds the key to skill development. Utilsing this relationship Empower implements traits such as motivation and sense of capability into society, influencing sustainable development from the communities themselves. Empower is currently in the process of being funded to be implemented into the Robert Sinyoka community in Zimbabwe.

Implementation Stratage Through forming collaborations with a Gateshead based charity an implementation strategy was created.

200 fog days a year Sub-Saharan Africa spends 40 billion hours a year collecting water, a responsibility largely beared by women. This year the RSA set a design challenge in a bid to find solutions for this increasing problem. Following extensive location and environmental research I designed a fog water harvester for the Topnaar community who live on the Namibian West coast. The community are forced to walk up to 20km for fresh drinking water. However, their location means they experience 200 fog days a year from the south atlantic ocean.

I chose to focus on a specific location for this project as I believed tackling the problem for all sub-saharan communities would result in an unreliable and unpredictable solution. By researching the environment of the Namib desert I was able to learn about the Namib beetle (right), which survives entirely off of coastal fog.

I wanted my design to use the namib deserts tough, windy environment to it’s advantage, rotating to draw in more fog for water collection.

Creating a sketch model proved valuable displaying how shapes would interact with the air flow, and how a rotating harvester would increase water collection rates.

Volume During my University second year New York shoe brand LUP requested the design of a shoe that would stand out on the UK market as a high end, quality product. The term ‘Volume’ was pushed, with the expectation of a shoe design that would exceed the boundaries of the norm. Inspiration from the Black Rhino was taken to display strength, durability and style to consumers.

Through my ideation stages I visualised a sports shoe (left), walking boot and a casual shoe (right).

Plowman Internship From March ‘13 I was taken on as an intern at Plowman Brothers, a company that designs a range of agricultural, rail and livestock equipment for clients across Europe and parts of Africa. During my time at the company I worked on 8 projects, including working as lead designer on a project to design an aerodynamic livestock container following the request of one of their long term clients.

With a lack of experience in designing aerodynamic trailers I spent a lot of time discussing my ideas with the on-site manufacturers.

Since the completion of my project many of my recommended improvements have been taken forward and implemented on their new range of trailers.

Freelance Following my placement at Plowman Brothers I continued to work on freelance projects for them, including designing their company logo which can now be seen on all of their new products.

Techstyle Internship From March ‘14 I was taken on as an intern at design consultants Techstyle-Europe, a company that works for a range of clients requiring plastic product solutions. During my time at the company I worked on 4 projects and spent a lot of time visiting manufacturers around the country. One of my projects included solely designing for gift card company Woodmansterne who required the design of a gift card container for their storage warehouses.

To kick the project off I visited one of their storage warehouses in Milton Keynes to talk to the staff and get more of an idea for what it was that they required.

PearsonLloyd Internship From June ‘14 I was taken on as a design intern at Pearson Lloyd, a london based design consultancy that works within the furniture, product, interior and healthcare industry for a range of high profile clients. During my time at the company I was involved in 10 different projects, working closely and learning from other members of the design team. Unfortunately I am unable to show a complete range of the projects I was involved in due to their current status.

One of my projects involved working alongside one of their designers in the development of a King and Queen hotel suite. During this project I picked up valuable solidworks and 3DS Max skills.
