“My Research in Three Minutes” Competition at JCU Singapore What is it? “My Research in Three Minutes” competition showcases academic and research communication skills. Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidates and academic staff have three minutes to give an engaging and dynamic presentation on their research topic and its significance in language appropriate to an audience of multidisciplinary interests. A panel of distinguished judges will determine the top 3 winners for each respective category. An overall People’s Choice award will also be presented to the participant voted by the audience.
Categories •Early Career Researchers (< 6 years of PhD) •Postgraduate Students (Masters) •Postgraduate Students (Doctoral)
Eligibility All research masters, doctoral students and academic staff Contestants will be required to agree to media exposure for their presentation and research.
Judging Criteria •Communication style (25%): Did presenters describe their research and its significance in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience? •Creativity (25%): Was the presentation inventive in a way that helped the audience understand the research? •Engagement (25%): Was the presentation engaging, dynamic and compelling, making us want to know more? •Time (25%): Was the presentation completed within 3 minutes?
Rules: •The winner(s) is judged based on the candidates’ ability to present their thesis to the audience (non-specialist, general public) using a single Powerpoint slide. •Presentation time is limited to 3 minutes. Competitors exceeding 3 minutes will be disqualified. •A single PowerPoint slide is permitted. (No slide transitions are permitted.) •The slide can be displayed at any time during the presentation. •No additional electronic media (sound and video files) are permitted. •No additional props (costumes, instruments) are permitted. •The judging panel’s decision is final.

Submission Requirements: Each entry will provide the following details, to the Associate Dean of Research, for each of the categories; •name of the contestant and the area that they represent within the Faculty •electronic version of their PowerPoint slide •100 words abstract of the research •Photograph (file size not less than 1MB) •CV Interested applicants may send their entries to rsvp@jcu.edu.sg addressed to Professor Libby Cohen, Associate Dean of Research, JCU Singapore. Competition Date: 1st of September 2011 at Block A01-01 JCU Singapore, 6pm to 9pm.
