English Language Preparatory Program (ELPP)
ABOUT JCU SINGAPORE
JCU Singapore (registered as James Cook Australia, Institute of Higher Learning in Singapore) is fully owned by James Cook University Australia. The university established JCU Singapore in 2003 as part of its expressed intent of “Creating a brighter future for life in the tropics world-wide through graduates and discoveries that make a difference”. The university is ranked in the top 4%* of universities in the world and is the leading tropical research university in Australia. It offers a suite of university level programs at the JCU Singapore campus. JCU Singapore has two campuses located at 600 Upper Thomson Road and 10 Ang Mo Kio Street 54. The campuses provide students with access to a full range of facilities and services to support their learning. Facilities include lecture and seminar rooms, a fully equipped library, computer laboratories, an onsite bistro and access to a variety of sporting facilities. All courses are registered with the Council for Private Education (Registration No. 200100786K) and our operations are governed by EduTrust. Since 2008, we have achieved the Singapore Quality Class accreditation. STUDY PROGRAM This program helps students in the following ways:
Prepares students for full degree programs at JCU Singapore
Enhances students’ abilities in reading, writing, speaking and listening in English
Equips students to present information, concepts, and ideas on a variety of topics
Enables students to express feelings and emotions, exchange opinions and make observations in English
Improves students’ writing and research skills

Speaking & Listening Basic to higher level situational speaking and listening skills
Further understanding of stress, rhythm, and intonation, practices in giving short answers and speeches. Presentation on researched topics
Presentation skills, identifying details, asking for and giving opinions during conversation
Reading Prediction, comprehension and language work in increasing levels of difficulty
Intensive and extensive reading, analysing points of view, sequencing, relationships and arguments
Analysing vocabulary, word forms, grammatical and syntactical errors, identifying general and specific information
Writing Grammar and practice, principles of summarising and creative writing
Building complex sentences, grammar review and practice, analyzing charts and graphs; and expository writing
Writing critical analysis, research and report writing
MINIMUM ACADEMIC AND ENGLISH ENTRY REQUIREMENTS IELTS equivalent of 4.0 as per our placement test or an IELTS test result
Exit Requirements Completion of this course with satisfactory result is a pathway to degree programs
Duration Students will undergo 11 teaching weeks + 2 weeks assessment for each level
Intakes January, March, May, July, August and October
Total Tuition Fees S$9,630 (S$3,210 per level) Note: All course fees include prevailing 7% Goods and Services Tax (GST)
More than one billion people around the world speak English making it the most widely spoken language in the world. English is the Lingua Franca of international meetings and businesses.
For these reasons, many countries have recognised the importance of English and have embarked on ambitious plans to improve their standards of English. At JCU Singapore, we offer an English language preparation program to students who need help with their English. Students undergo an intensive academic English curriculum that helps them to attain the required standard to move on to their tertiary programs.
Note: International students in Singapore on a Student Pass are not permitted to work. For more information please visit www.ica.gov.sg JCU Singapore is EduTrust Certified. The EduTrust certification scheme is administered by the Council for Private Education (CPE), a statutory board formed in 2009. EduTrust requires all students to be covered under a Fee Protection Scheme. In JCU Singapore, this is provided through an insurance protection scheme. Further, EduTrust also requires that the students must be covered under a medical insurance coverage which has provision for hospitalisation, surgery and treatment costs throughout their course duration.
