me At an early age, Jeremy’s passion for design has stemmed from childhood drawings of rooms and houses using limited materials such as crayons and markers. Always looking for a way to transform spaces, and create new experiences, he’s made this into a committed career path. British Designer, Ilse Crawford once said,

“Empathy is the keystone of design.” Jeremy believes this is what separates interior design from simply creating aesthetically pleasing spaces, but, into a more utilitarian purpose. The goal is to choregraph how individuals interact with the property, and how that can be combined with the ideals of Universal Design, ADA compliancy, and Sustainability. With this empathetic formula, design is pushed towards a greater understanding of the safety and welfare of people and property, with a dash memorable style. Jeremy recieved his professional training and degree in Interior Architecture & Design from the Academy of Art University, in San Francisco, California.

Site Considerations: - Solar Orientation in the Summer Solstice shows direct sunglight. Maybe consider window treatments to alleviate this issue. - Vehicular traffic may cause a problem due to elderly pedestrians, assistance or further analysis of road conditions to determine vital exit/ entry access. - Wind flow indicates caution should be taken when designing balconies on Eastern facade of the building. - Noise pollution due to retail spaces such as Trader Joe’s and Target is abundant on the North-Western side and Southern End. Proper Set Backs (such as Gardens) may be used to buffer sounds.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Cogitare Senior Care Residences: Cogitare: Latin word for “thinking, or thinking of”. When it comes to aging, we tend to take care of the external attribtures that we can see, such as our overall external physique. Though when we truly think about it , our memories, our passions, and our lives are stored in a very crucial part of our anatomy, our brain. We can’t physically see it on on the daily basis, we tend to overlook it. At the end of the day, when we are no longer able to exert as much physical effort we can still exercise our brains in the comforts of our home.

Neutrally colored, undulating shapes and forms are repated through the main communal areas such as the lobby, the dining hall, the recreational center and through the gardens to stimulate interaction and sutble invigoration. Contrasted by stark primary colors to aid in way-finding and accessible spatial flow for the elderly, the facility will target a demographic of seniors who share the same eagerness to continue active use of their minds, even beyond their work years and into their recreational years. This is Cogitare.

The logo simulates an abstract version of DaVinci’s Vitruvian Man. In retrospect, the actual sketch Da Vinci created was to anatomically create the perfect physicallity of a man, while correlating the ideals of mathematics and science. This logo, represents the ideals of Cogitare, where we want our residents to be part of something greater, where they can still use their gained wisodm and experience to further their learning. May it be through art based programs, communal gatherings, and the common understanding o f the importance of how daily activities keeps our minds working. Cogitare is meant to stimulate, redefining what retirement is.

CONCEPT SKETCHES

A. Front Lobby Perspective It aims to welcome guests and residents into a productive and vibrant space through the undulating forms dropped from the ceiling, and a contrast of organic materials such as a bamboo plank finished wall and smooth tiles for accessiblity

. B. Dining Room Perspective The dining room is meant to serve as both a dining hall and an ipromptu communal hall, wherein residents can enjoy each other’s company in this vibrant corner space . The circular forms on the ceiling, will symbolized the “lobes of the brain, correlating it back to the concept of brain & mind. Curtain Walls allow for natural light and controlled views for the guests and residents.

The library will be located in the central portion of the second level. Allowing residents to have priority of the space. It’s curved perimeter allows for efficiency of the space alotted, as well as an abstract resemblance of the “brain”.

Programs Used: Revit, 3DS Max, Enscape, Adobe Creative Suite

C. Library Perspective (East Facing)

Giving the residents of the space ample green space for sustainability and an escape from the urban landscape of San Francisco. A Xeriscaped, or local plant life will be planted on the roof on circular containers doubling as bench seating. Uplights will create an invigorating experience paired with energy efficiency through the use of solar panels.

SWEET INSPIRATION CAFE

RESTAURANT (COMMERCIAL DESIGN)

2239 Market Street San Francisco, CA 94118 The Castro is a neighborhood in central San Francisco that heavily represents the LGBTQ community as a whole. A cafe stands here, since 1985 that not only serves as place to grab a coffee or delicious pastries, but a communal ground for the local residents that reside and visitors wanting to see this neighborhood of rainbows. A one-story space, with a linear shape allows us to create an open circulation with FF&E’s that give it depth.

41

02

SITE ANALYSIS FLOORPLAN DEVELOPMENT

The initial site allows us to take advantage of the high foot traffic, but also presents challenges with sound trasnsmission and solar orientation. Even though the space has a decent amount of natural light, the overcasting of the surrounding buildings and trees, may make the space seem dark. A use of specific materials and finishes were applied to counteract some of the dark areas within the restaurant, and in some cases of the space, we will embrace the dark areas to create a chic and modern look that attaches itself to the concept.

SWEET INSPIRATION

The Castro Theatre got its start thanks to the Nasser brothers, one of the oldest movie-business families in San Francisco. In 1907 the duo converted the family’s candy-making factory and grocery into a little theater by projecting movies onto the back wall. While that seems an unlikely transition, the early 20th century and budding motion picture industry saw many ambitious young immigrants put their time and money into local movie houses in an effort to reap big bucks. The Nassers’ small makeshift theater, at 18th and Collingwood streets, upgraded in 1910 to a600-seat theater a few blocks away at 485 Castro (today the location of Cliff’s Variety). Then expanded to its present-day location with the aid of then little-known architect Timothy Pflueger. Castro theatre being one of his first theatre designs, he goes on to design 8 others thatwould serve as iconic structures throughout the Bay Area.

A.Custom Communal Lighting This light fixture piece I modeled is a custom chandlier meant to emphasize my concept of drag and transformation. A sense of complexity when it comes to gender expression and the zigzag struggles of the LGBTQ community . It’s meant to act as a focal point from point entry into the space, to attract individuals to use the back end of the space as a communal work area. To create intimacy and at the same time, a sense of social networking. The light fixture stands 7’6” ft from A.F.F. or above finished floor with dimensions of 5’ at it’s widest circumference and about a 1’ ft. of depth.

Staying true to the concept of creating a light fixture that initiates the thought of “transformation” in the drag queen essence, mirrored framework for the linear led’s within the chandelier and its modern form create the narrative of how far we’ve come in the LGBTQ community, and also in designing for this specific neighborhood.

“A mangrove is a connection of sea-plants resembling that of trees, it brings life into the shores while at the same time thriving amongst the other species such as the fish, the sand, the water, and the corals near it. A sense of community and a togetherness in it’s living situation is what the Market Hall should resemble in the China Basin Area. More than just a place for consumers, but a place of culture and demonstration. Making it a focal point in the area as a gathering place for its new partners and customers. “

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN

13 Wood Street San Francisco, CA 94118 Located in the charming neighborhood of Laurel Heights in San Francisco, this three-story building’s first two floors will be transformed into affordable housing with the comforts of a modern and sustainable home for its inhabitants. The top floor will be for the landlord of the space, where a sense of ownership and responsbility will be paid in return with chic yet warm finishes and thoughtful spatial planning. In this specific project, the building will emphasize the need for ADA Compliancy and Universal Design through its spatial planning and FF&E’s.

SITE ANALYSIS Using data gathered for the site analysis, we are emphasizing the need for window treatments, and a sense of passive cooling when it comes to the redesign of the space. Another notion to think about are the crucial factors when it comes to dealing with clientele with special needs that may not have a reliable source of transportation. Their proximity to spaces such as stores, parks, and public transport must be taken into consideration. 87

CLIENT PROGRAM FIRST FLOOR

Client: Cassandra is a veteran who is in a transitional phase getting acclimated to civilian life once again. She has a difficult time looking for a full-time job as she is injured from war and is wheel chair bound until her physiÂŹcal therapy/rehab is over. She lives alone and needs to be situated near an accessible means of egress and a space that has universal design in mind as she is incapable of using full body function. The kitchen and the living room must be in visual distance of each other for better spatial movement. Transitional finishes need to be in contrast for precaution in the wheel chair and doorknobs/doors need to have a wide enough turn point to allow Cassandra to open doors and take packages. To add, Cassandra has a pet cat named, Simon, she wishes to have a space designated for him (nothing too official, but a flexible place of establishment for kitty litter, scratching post, and a spectral view while Cassandra is out.

CLIENT PROGRAM: - Entry closet - 1 bedroom with closet (2 ft deep and 5 ft wide) - 1 bathroom - Kitchen - Dining Room - Living Room - Laundry room (for stacking washer/ dryer) - Linen closet (near bedrooms or laundry room)

Piecing your life back together after a routine of regimented work and lifestyle is a challenge that any individual can relate to, regardless of the severity of their situation. As designers, we create spaces that not only benefit the character and ambience of a space, but, we realize the utilitarian effect we have on people’s daily lives, especially when it’s their home. Acclimating to life’s challenges and starting anew is a gradual process and does not happen overnight, like a large jigsaw puzzle, with its niches an dspecific forms, it takes patience. Taking cue from these puzzle pieces, a space is designed to make an individual feel as one with the space, as if it was always meant for them. Emphasizing on innovative sotrage and universal design (with counter space, adjacencies, and equipment) within the concaves of the space, we aim to create a spatial flow that can accomodate any individual with ease and flexibility.

STORAGE CONTAINER COMMUNITY SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

BREDCO Port Bacolod City, Philippines To create a masterplannedsustainble community that has an emphasis on social justice and hopefully evolve that mindset into ecological literacy. 119

05

SITE ANALYSIS

The Bredco Port area is the main port of entry into the island Province of Negros Occidental, with it’s capital city Bacolod. It currently hosts illegal settlers who also work for the port. The illegal settling causes traffic and congestion which leads to unnecessary waste in the direct vicinity.

The sun is focused on the Southern end of the port and moves from East to West. Taking this into account, and thinking of bioclimatic design, or designing dictated by the geographic location of the facility or space, the operable windows will have some overhang facing the Southern end, while allowing enough sunlight for daylighting, hence natural spectral light for passive heating during the rainy seasons and cooling for the hot summer seasons. 120

A large privately operated port known as BREDCO is approximately 7 hectares worth of coastal sea port. Sharing the area are about 3000 residents living illegally on it’s vicinity while actually working at the port. Like most housing issues in the country, the impoverish are almost tolerated with their illegal use of space in trade for cheap labor, social justice is a must in this area. In abundance are about 4,500 shipping crates that have beencongesting the port.

ADAPTABLE REUSE

Programs Used: 3DS Max, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator, V-ray, AutoCad

Using solar panels that can produce 265 watts of energy attached at the roof of the repurposed container homes for optimal sun exposure. (An average Filipino household uses, 897 kilowatts per month according the Philippine Statistics Authority.) Through my research, this would be able to heavily benefit not only the homes, but, the port as well.

SUSTAINABILE DESIGN (BREDCO PORT)

Green Roofs serve multiple facets of a green home, such as absorbing rainwater and providing insulation.

*Xeriscape: This is a sub-category of permaculture in a sense wherein we are only using vegetation that is native to the land, hence, less maintenance cost and waste (water efficiency).

PERMACULTURE

Programs Used: 3DS Max, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator, V-ray, AutoCad SUSTAINABILE DESIGN (BREDCO PORT)

The use of native plant life and crops such as mangoes, papaya, coconut, dragonfruit, and other fruit trees (a tropical climate helps make permaculture a very accessible source of agricultural density in the immediate environment.) Well water might be relic of developing nations and the way the water is pumped, though it actually is an essential part of culture, beyond Western standards common belief that everything “needs to be automated.

SOCIAL JUSTICE / ECOLOGICAL LITERACY

Programs Used: 3DS Max, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator, V-ray, AutoCad MARIOTTO RESIDENCE

Ecological Literacy is a must and top of the list, we have the ability to educate illegal settlers a redevelop a more sustainable future for the next generation: (i.e. A community center wherein courses are taught for xeriscape, and permaculture. Social Justice is also about a sustainable economy, one of the bigger issues in the area is that parents are pulling their children out of school in order to help with port work, having the efficiency of a community center with a non-profit volunteer system of educational reasons, we can somewhat relieve a generation of lacking education.

Programs Used: 3DS Max, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator, V-ray, AutoCad MARIOTTO RESIDENCE

Using the mechanics of Gray Water for the self sustaining ability to water the vegetation or crops the community will have for themselves is an economical and already present form of sustainable technology in the island. Gray water is basically the repurposing or redirecting of waste/potable water from the main source (a.k.a, bathrooms, kitchens, wherever water drainage is needed.)
