The design concept continues the spatial connectivity of the surrounding neighborhood and community through a series of gardens and courtyards, both vertically and horizontally. Given the client’s request for a lower density multi-unit site, the project envisions a 2-story “garden village” with various scaled open spaces and planting that links the two levels. Large shade trees at the rear of the property are preserved and the building form shades itself by virtue of the placement of circulation decks.

Added to an existing office building, the Xantho Work House acts as an oasis in the middle of an industrial zone in the city of Hawthorne, California. Taking its name from the word xanthophyll, which describes yellow pigments found in plants, the bright yellow structure rises from a small gap as a flower that grew against all odds. With only 9% of green area in ½ square mile, the new building proofs that it’s possible to engage with nature within an urban context. Planter walls enclosing the front and back of the property stand out from the colorless surroundings and articulates a visual continuation from the park located south from the site. The live unit complements the office building by adding 1,570 sq ft of program which contains a storage room in the second level and a loft apartment in the third and mezzanine levels. The dwelling space accommodates a living room, dining room, kitchen and bedroom.

The project repurposes a former parking lot into a vibrant and resilient public space. The park serves to reinvest in green infrastructure along the vulnerable shoreline of coastal South Florida. The upland coastal ecosystem includes both vegetated “root” dunes and rubberized surfaces to protect landward investments from storm surge as well as serve as “boundless” playscape. A ramping dune provides park-goers to experience the elevation changes while moving up to a twenty-five foot cantilevered overlook of the beach and ocean.

Stay Puft explores the composition of moldable parts to form a precarious pile through architectural stickiness. Rather than imagining parts in opposition, the pieces are visualized as a new kind of assemblage, one that finds balance in imperfection, one that challenges notions of equilibrium. Stay Puft becomes a singular compound that has the motive of keeping things in the sky. Stay Puft works as an Arts and Performance Center formed by black box theaters and venues, open performance pockets, screening rooms and office space, all stuck together by the marshmallow like parts. The interior placing of the program inside the squishy objects reflects the molding features made by the outside blocks. Different from the outside, the inside subtly pokes through other pieces, sometimes for circulation and other times in favor of user experience. The building stands heavily into a goop like slippy landscape that extends into the sidewalk and works as public space that provides outdoor stages and recreational areas.

The design concept originated with the premise of making simple operations over the site with two elements: tubes and towers. The pieces interact with each other, the site and the context to generate a formal language that would be able to contain 1,100,000 square feet of office space and 50,000 square feet of commercial space. The tubes act as the main circulation, creating a looped walkway through the entire building and serving the main office bays and retail stores. The towers are inserted into the tubes to break the continuity and to accommodate private conference rooms vertically.

The scheme was designed for a recently married couple, visualizing spaces for future changes regarding the addition of two young family members. The irregular site influenced the “C” form of the house, leaving a central patio that connects the views from the inside. Site topography ordered the interior program by a series of steps that break the continuity of the house in the lower level.

The project focused on questioning the possibility of semblances within architecture and the importance of the image in current discourse. The formal operations were based on a set of hand-made soaps as objects to generate a physical massing that would be translated into the virtual realm through photogrammetry, later to be digitally sliced and textured. As part of the process, texture patterns were followed to produce a tectonic solution for the building envelope. The result is a building that oscillates between the familiar and the ambiguous when seen at an architectural scale.

The proposal questioned the ordinary state of the current urban landscape. It defends a form of architecture that reflects the character and behaviors of its inhabitants over financial interests of developers, which produce banal and predictable buildings. If buildings are designed showing nuances of user personality, the city would be more open to moments of surprise and differentiation, transforming the skyline and experience of the urban setting.

The renovation design took place in a second story unit in a residential building, it revolved around the idea of taking advantage of the existing windows to bring abundant light to every space and highlighting the main views to the outside. The interior was opened up for the public areas and subdivided in the private areas, it changed from having 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, to 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, this with the intention of adding value to the property.
