DEAR McLAREN ENTHUSIAST,

AS

we are getting very close to delivering our first McLaren P1™, we wanted to highlight the characteristics of this race car for the road in this issue of the McLaren Newport Beach Magazine. We also wanted to give you a preview of the McLaren 650S which will be officially introduced at the Geneva Motor Show next month. We are very excited to announce our first McLaren Service Clinic taking place on Saturday March 15. This is a great opportunity for every McLaren owner to come meet the staff working on the cars and ask all the technical questions you want. The following day, Sunday March 16, marks the first Formula One race of the 2014 season. After a promising testing session in Jerez, we hope Jenson and Kevin will perform well at the season opener in Australia. Come watch the race with us at our showroom at 10.00am on Sunday. Thank you, Pietro Frigerio General Manager McLaren Newport Beach

THE McLAREN

THE McLAREN P1: DESIGNED TO BE THE BEST DRIVER’S CAR IN THE WORLD • Aero-led design produces more downforce than any other production road car. • 916PS (903 hp) generated by 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine coupled to an electric motor gives tremendous power and instant throttle response with an electronically limited top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph). • Active ride height, and aerodynamics work with large adjustable rear wing to give ground effect suction and optimised downforce.

• IPAS (Instant Power Assist System) and DRS (Drag Reduction System) offer instant boost of power and straight-line speed. • The MonoCage is one of the lightest carbon fibre full-body structures used in any road car to date, weighing 198lbs. This weight includes the roof and lower structures, roof snorkel, engine air intake cavity, battery and power electronics housing. • MonoCage chassis includes fibres more than five times the strength of the best grade titanium, and includes use of Kevlar. • 0 to 184mph in less than 17 seconds – five seconds quicker than the legendary McLaren F1. • To maintain exclusivity, production will be strictly limited to 375 units.

DRIVING INVOLVEMENT The McLaren P1™ is groundbreaking through the technology and performance that it offers, but it also optimises the emotions felt the driver and, through sensory enhancements, the driver feels like part of the car, and more connected to the road as a result. Chief Design Engineer, Dan Parry-Williams explains: “When you drive the McLaren P1™, your senses are being stimulated. The

primary touchpoints for the driver have been optimised – the steering and pedal feel – to give the greatest level of feedback, and make the driver feel truly connected to what is going on with the car. And this emotional involvement increases as you work through the different modes – E-mode, Normal, Sport, Track and Race – with a real crescendo for the senses in the fully trackfocussed Race mode, and you really do feel part of the car.”

CONSTRUCTION

CHASSIS

McLaren is a global pioneer in carbon fibre technology. It introduced the first carbon Formula 1 car (the MP4/1 in 1981), the world’s first all-carbon bodied road car (the F1, of 1993), and today it makes more carbon road cars than any other manufacturer. Unsurprisingly, as the flagship for McLaren Automotive, the McLaren P1™ has a carbon fibre monocoque, carbon fibre body panels and a carbon fibre interior. It is the perfect material for strength, light weight, rigidity and durability.

The McLaren P1™ uses an innovative hydro-pneumatic proactive suspension, called RaceActive Chassis Control (RCC), which gives a wide range of adjustment through variable ride height and spring rates, and adaptive roll control and damping. This system means the McLaren P1™ is extremely versatile, and ensures it is perfectly tuned for use on either road or track. At its lowest track setting, just 1,174mm, the car can corner at 2g – astonishing for a road car on road legal tyres.

M cL A R E N P1

AERODYNAMICS The McLaren P1™ was designed from the outset in a wind tunnel and using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) aerodynamic tools – just like a Formula 1 car. McLaren Racing’s former head of Formula 1 aerodynamics, and now head of vehicle technology, Simon Lacey, was responsible for its aero performance.

POWERTRAIN High levels of power were crucial for the car to deliver the performance requirement: to be faster, around a racing circuit, than any other production road car. Sharp throttle response is a key requirement of any great driver’s car. The twin-turbo petrol V8 and single electric motor – both mounted behind the cockpit in a mid-engine position – have a combined output of 916PS (900 hp) and 900Nm, with emissions of less than 200g/km. Power is driven to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox.

This optimal level of aerodynamic performance produces incredible levels downforce – up to 1,320lbs, which is more than any other production road car to date. “The levels of downforce produced actually makes driving easier as well as faster,” says Lacey. “As you build your speed, you actually feel you have greater control as the levels of downforce increase the car’s grip on the track.”

The car can be driven in a variety of modes, powered solely by the electric motor, or using a combination of the two. Maximum power comes when using both engines together, but even in E-mode the performance is strong. “It’s pretty cool to turn up, silently, in a million dollar McLaren,” notes Paul Mackenzie, Project Director on the McLaren P1™. In IPAS (Instant Power Assist System) mode, the battery is recharged using surplus energy from the petrol engine – when decelerating, for example. It can also be plugged in to recharge the battery.

INTERIOR The McLaren P1™ has a clear goal: to be the best driver’s car in the world on road and track. In order to achieve this, performance and handling are key, but to extract best from the aerodynamic bodyshape and the groundbreaking technology beneath the carbon fibre exterior, the driver has to feel comfortable and at ease. For this reason, the cabin of the McLaren P1™ is fully focused on the driver, and is clear from clutter and distraction. All examples of the McLaren P1™ will be produced in left-hand drive. The interior of the McLaren P1™ offers the driver and passenger a cocooning, efficiently packaged, comfortable cabin. Light weight – as with the rest of the car – is a priority, yet the McLaren

P1™ retains luxury features such as full climate control, satellite navigation and a bespoke sound system, developed from the outset with Meridian. Director of Sales and Marketing for McLaren Automotive, Greg Levine explained: “As a company, McLaren Automotive prides itself on designing performance cars that their owners can use regularly, so the McLaren P1™ comes comprehensively equipped as standard with an array of colour and trim alternatives from which the customer will be able to choose as well as visible carbon fibre in the cabin. The options list is limited to only bespoke content that a customer might wish to add through McLaren Special Operations, and fitted luggage.”

McLAREN 650S

• Designed and developed to give the enthusiast driver the ultimate in luxury, engagement and excitement. • The McLaren 650S will offer the widest breadth of capabilities of any supercar.

M

cLaren Automotive will return to the International Geneva Motor Show this year with its fastest, most engaging, best equipped and most beautiful series-production supercar yet. The 650S badge designation refers to the power output – 650PS (641 bhp) – of the unique British-built McLaren M838T twin turbo V8 engine. ‘S’ stands for ‘Sport’, underlining the focus and developments made to handling, transmission, drivability and engagement.

• Coupé and Spider, with electrically retractable hardtop, to be available from Spring 2014 launch. • Joins McLaren’s range of supercars above 12C, which continues on sale.

• Uniquely enhanced active aerodynamics and ProActive Chassis Control systems optimise the capabilities and usability.

The design is inspired by the McLaren P1™, previewing a new family design language. The front bumper gives the McLaren 650S a dramatic, yet clean appearance and sits below new LED headlamps which reflect a similar look to the McLaren P1™. The McLaren 650S builds on experience from success on the track, and groundbreaking technologies fitted to other McLaren models. Active aerodynamics, which feature on both the

12C and McLaren P1™, have been further developed and honed to ensure the ultimate performance and ability for the McLaren 650S. The McLaren 650S is designed to be the best and most engaging driver’s car in its class, yet it is not a stripped out road racer. The global reveal of the McLaren 650S Coupé and Spider will take place on Stand 1240, Hall 1 at 12.00CET (11.00GMT) on Tuesday, 4 March 2014 at the 84th International Geneva Motor Show.

FORMULA 1 TESTING REPORT JENSON BUTTON - DAY 1-2-3, 28-29-30 JANUARY 2014

A

fter a challenging start to the MP4-29’s test and development program on Day 1, it was satisfying to get 43 laps under MP4-29’s belt on Day 2. Overnight rain, coupled with the decision to douse the track with sprinklers in order to enable Pirelli to evaluate its 2014-spec wet-weather rubber, meant that the team spent the morning conducting installation checks on a damp track, using both Inter and Full-Wet tires. By lunchtime, the track had dried completely, which coincided with the team ramping up the mileage, beginning a steadily lengthening series of runs to monitor power-unit behavior. While the tone of the day was still exploratory, the team was satisfied with the respectable amount of mileage achieved today, and the solid and predictable platform provided by the MP4-29. Jenson said: “For our first day of actual running, we were able to get a good understanding of the car, and the way the engine and turbo behaves. It’s tricky, and very different to what we’re used to, but I could feel that these cars will be enjoyable to drive. “Of course, it’s still early days, and there’s a lot of work ahead of us. We need to work on both braking and traction; but that excites me, because there’s a lot of potential to adjust those parameters. The new braking system is very complicated,

and getting it right will be tough. “But these are all things we can work on: there’s nothing about the car that unsettles me, and there’s plenty of scope to explore the set-up. It will just take time. “Our main aim this winter was to field a reliable car that would give us a good baseline. These cars will develop so much over the next few months, so it’s essential to have a solid base to build upon; and I think we have that good base.” Following Tuesday’s non-running, the decision was taken to extend Jenson’s seat-time on Day 3, effectively equally splitting each driver’s time with the car. Jenson continued the evaluative work he began yesterday, further drilling down into the detail as he continues to understand and refine MP4-29.

KEVIN MAGNUSSEN - DAY 3-4, 30-31 JANUARY 2014

A

fter lunch, Kevin took over for his first run in the car. The team had devised a program that gave him maximum time in the cockpit. This meant focusing on a series of longer runs – in order to best familiarize him with the car and its systems. Additionally, he conducted some shorter runs at the end of the day, punctuating them with a series of practice starts in the pitlane, and some practice pitstops. Kevin said: “This was a big day for me. I had butterflies in my stomach and had trouble sleeping last night – I’m a rookie, and I was just excited to get in the car. Equally, however, this doesn’t feel like my first day at work: I know everybody at McLaren, so I really felt at home. “Happily, everything worked as it should, and the car felt good. I’m pretty pleased with our reliability – to have done as many laps as I did in just half a day was pretty positive. “I’m not taking too much from the fact that I set the fastest time – I was pushing, but it wasn’t a balls-to-thewall lap. We wanted to get good data and learn about the car, so I think everyone is pushing out there. “Even so, I still think we can improve the car this week. And the most important thing is to understand how to improve things when we go away from here. I think we have a good idea of the direction to take.” While Kevin satisfyingly ended the day fastest overall, more pleasing was the fact that the car – in the hands of both drivers – completed a total of 92 laps, more than any other team, thus underlining the team’s pre-season aim to focus on reliability over performance during these crucial winter test sessions. On Day 4, Kevin Magnussen returned to the cockpit for his second session in the car – his first full day behind the wheel of MP4-29. An overnight rain shower meant the morning started cold and wet. The team capitalized on the conditions, electing to run a wet-weather

program that gave Kevin the opportunity to gain experience on both the Intermediate and Full Wet tires. It also supplied the engineers with data about the behavior of the power unit in the wet. While the morning rain quickly abated, today’s cooler conditions meant that the track never fully dried, rendering laptimes slower than in previous days. Nonetheless, Kevin racked up an extremely impressive 110 laps, giving both himself and the team further insight into the behavior of the power unit and chassis across a range of different conditions. Kevin brought his day to a slightly premature end, getting the car onto a wet curb at Turn 10, losing traction and oversteering into the wall. However, with the incident occurring just 10 minutes before the end of the day’s running, and with MP4-29 sustaining only relatively minor damage, the impact to the day’s program was minimal. Kevin was unhurt in the accident. What’s next: McLaren returns to MTC having completed 1084 laps of Jerez, and armed with terabytes of data to analyze. This will be pored over ahead of our next test, in Bahrain, between February 19 and 22. The current run-program has Kevin driving for the opening two days before handing over to Jenson.
