Preface
BA (HONS) CREATIVE IMAGING
B
eyond is a show-case of work from students completing their studies on Liverpool John Moores University’s BA (Hons) Creative Imaging Degree course delivered at Southern Regional College’s Lurgan Campus. The degree is awarded by Liverpool John Moores University and is studied part-time at Southern Regional College. The work on view is from a talented and diverse range of students who have previously completed a HND in a creative arts discipline including graphic design, photography, media, fine art etc. The work presented is the student’s final major project, which they have self-devised and explored over the final year of the course. Prior to this module students will have completed four others, including business studies, a dissertation and two practical modules based on advertising and fineart. For the final assignment each student is encouraged to choose a topic that is meaningful, allowing them to express their ideas and emotions in whichever discipline they choose.
Over the two years they will have opportunity to work in various media both traditional and digital culminating in what is on display. On behalf of the teaching team I would like to wish each student every success for the future and the realisation of their dreams. The aim of the Creative Imaging course is to enhance the student’s portfolios, with emphasis on developing an understanding of various materials and processes. It is evident from the work presented that our aims have once again been achieved and the standard of outcomes, surpass our expectations. I would also like to thank senior management for their continued support of the course and special thanks to our Head of School Marie Reilly, Margot Swift our External Examiner, Peter Appleton LJMU Link Tutor and Sue Duffy Senior Administrator at LJMU and all the support staff who assist in helping students with various aspects of their work. We would also like to thank the staff of the Millennium Court for their help and professionalism. Well done, and every success for the future to each of the students.

o A fie Aoife Young, 21 Artist & Photographer Format: Photography + Fine Art Mobile: +44 (0) 7706238296 Email: young_young@hotmail.co.uk
Aoife is an enthusiastic creative from County Derry, who loves the challenge of a new venture in the design world. She has previously achieved a HND in Graphic Design in 2013 at Belfast Metropolitan College, however she was unsure if Graphic Design was the correct career path to pursue, as she also had a keen interest in Photography and Crafts. The Creative Imaging degree has such variety and versatility that
Aoife was learning new techniques through different experimental tasks every week. Aoife’s thinking and thought process developed and broadened from her time of study at SRC. Her ability to become a better designer has strengthened. Before she began the course, she was entirely Graphic Design orientated. Throughout the course she has become heavily influenced by Photography and Crafts.

Photographer/Artist Ben Heine’s work was what inspired Aoife to choose to produce a photography/fine art piece for her final major project. She chose the theme ‘Reality vs Fantasy’ as she believes that every person has a fantasy about something they would like to have in their life, such as more money, a sports car or to live in a warm country. She will showcase this theme throughout a series of pieces with the use of photography and fine art. In completion of her degree, she hopes to become involved in the photography or crafts industry, She wishes that one day, she will hopefully become a freelance designer/photographer.

o Con r Conor Mc Veigh, 23 Artist & Photographer Format: Photography + Fine Art Mobile: +44 (0) 7917831101 Email: conormcveigh92@gmail.com
Conor is a young creative originally born in Belfast, who moved to the Lurgan area in his early teens. With a clear passion for art from a very young age he then went on to study art and design for GCSE and then Foundation Diploma. It was within these traditional art courses that he discovered a passion for digital design which then led him to delve further into the subject of design and ultimately attend the H.N.D in graphic design at SRC Lurgan.

Now with the H.N.D behind him, he chose to remain in education in an attempt to attain his BA Honors in Creative Imaging. An extensive knowledge of both traditional and modern techniques as well as the ability to combine an in depth understanding of composition and narrative to create unique creative solutions is what separates him from other young designers.
The only thing that can match his passion for design is his ambition to progress and develop. Conor aspires to become a recognizable artist / designer on an international scale, perhaps one day running his own Design house.

‘Anyone who fails to understand photography will be one of the illiterates of the future.’ - Lazlo Moholy Nagy
This is a statement that Declan strongly believes in. After completing his HND in photography he wanted to expand his knowledge in all art forms and be able to acquire a better understanding of creating images not just with a camera, but mixing different media to produce artwork. This is what brought him to his study of the creative imaging degree it has allowed him to experiment with different forms of art and media to be able to combine all of these into an outcome that is more than a photo. To be able to bring a different element of perspective as well as interest to a work of art is something that Declan believes he can achieve, after progressing through the degree.

Now, he has finished the course and has developed numerous new skills and techniques that he can apply to future projects to be able to give them a unique and further interest to viewers. His career will still be heavily focused on photography but with this new knowledge he believes he can bring a different perspective to the works he creates.

Jordan is a Multidisciplinary Designer based in Belfast, currently working for Paperjam Design. Throughout his short career so far, Jordan has found it difficult to settle on one particular facet of design, and has tried to involve himself in every aspect of the process. Due to this attitude towards design, he has come to be a firm believer in the idea that good design is universal, and simply needs to be applied to the platform that is needed.

BA (HONS) CREATIVE IMAGING
This means that he has been a part of print, web, motion, copy writing, and branding etc. and working with the required experts in each field to realize the final product. This, he has found, is the most efficient and cost effective way to create best work he can. This book (the one that you are holding) is the result of his final year efforts, which utilizes a wide array of skillsets and techniques, which is just the way he likes it. He was inspired by some of the greats of typographic and layout design, such as “Erik Spiekermann” and “Josef MullerBrockmann” when considering what area of design to address for this final year project.
Having identified the need for a well designed and properly thought out publication, which showcases all of the artists on show, he decided to focus on developing his layout and typographic design skills. He soon found however, that this project would involve much more than simply designing a publication. He had to plan meetings, organize photo-shoots and oversee the printing and finishing of the book. He is planning to continue working for Paperjam Design, and further developing his design skills in all area’s.

a K rl Karl Pang, 25 Graphic Designer Format: Mixed Media Mobile: +44 (0) 7516099339 Email: pangcreative@gmail.com
Karl is a Graphic designer/Illustrator based in Portadown. Karl has found himself drawn to the digital aspect of graphic design and has developed some freelance work for clients via the Internet. Karl likes to adapt his Asian culture within his work as he adopts an Asian style in his character designs. Karl also likes to develop and learn new skills in areas within the art field and photography. In his spare time he tries to learn new skills such as 3D modelling, video editing and working with new software to improve work.

BA (HONS) CREATIVE IMAGING
This urge to learn more and more new skills has allowed Karl to develop skills in new software and work with a wider range of design aspects such as branding, posters, character designs and custom emotes. This also encourages him to try new techniques that he has never tried before. The new techniques helped Karl visualize his final outcome of his final major project. Having researched through different technique used, he developed a new way of approaching the design as we see it.
“Artist’s eye” is the theme Karl chosen. The reason for choosing this was that there have always been hidden messages throughout art which people might not have noticed. With the final pieces, Karl wanted to show that the artist’s minds are creative and that it’s not only a blank page they see, but an image of a design painted in their mind. Karl is hoping to develop his skills further after this degree with more freelance work. He is also looking for a fulltime position in a design company.

Klaudia Lisek, 23 Creative Designer & Illustrator Format: Drawing + Illustration Mobile: +44 (0) 7936696437 Email: klaudialisek@hotmail.com Website: www.klaudialisek.wordpress.com
Klaudia comes from Poland and has loved to draw since she picked up a pencil as a child. Her interests in drawing lead her to the area of graphic design, however during her education she explored many areas of art and design including photography, printmaking, typography, video making and illustration, so she finds it hard to pinpoint just one specific field of design. During her studies, she had an opportunity to participate in an international project which involved working on live briefs, helped in networking, making new friends and gaining confidence as a designer. Having an introduction to work for various clients, she obtained more
experience while working as a junior designer for Icono. She acquired new skills in the area of web design and digital marketing which she found very exciting, as well as expanded existing knowledge related to print, digital techniques, illustration and branding. She keeps developing her skills by undertaking freelance work and frequently setting herself self initiated briefs to keep honing her ability and vision within graphic design,

The format of the final outcome is drawing, which for her is a comeback to childhood passion and the only thing she decided on since the beginning of the project. The theme is based around transparency and distortion and combines opposites: traditional and digital techniques, realism and abstraction as well as chaos and serenity which is portrayed in a form of female portrait. Besides drawing and design, Klaudia loves music; she can play piano and learns guitar in a spare time. She’s dreaming of opening up her own design studio in the future, learning new things and doing what she loves.

Laura Rose is a Visual Artist and Part time Lecturer based in Belfast, currently working for the F.E. McWilliam Gallery and Southern Regional College. Her work has appeared in several joint exhibitions in various local galleries and been published twice in PhotoVogue, Vogue Italia. Laura Rose has worked hard throughout her short career so far to gain experience in gallery curation, arts administration, exhibition planning and organisation. Art history has played an important part in all her photographic work to date, especially the theories and concepts associated with Surrealism, an art movement from the 1920s which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind.
The series of mixed media portraits on display were inspired by a quote from a Surrealist Photographer known as Man Ray. For Man Ray, ‘the camera was not a machine for making documents but an instrument for exploring dreams, desires and the medium’s unconscious mind.’ She decided to explore the layers of the subconscious mind that make us all individuals. With her classmates as subjects she used darkroom photography techniques to explore their dreams, desires and subconscious mind. Through the use of watercolour paint she applied the psychological properties of colour to suggest to the viewer elements of the individual subject’s personality.

Laura Rose is planning to continue building her career as a Lecturer and Visual Artist, further developing her skills as both an educator and a gallery curator. She hopes to complete a PGCE in the near future, as well as a MFA in Photography or Museum Practice and Management, and eventually a PhD in Museum and Heritage Studies or related subject.

Nigel is a photographer based in Craigavon, but can be found practicing his art throughout Northern Ireland. He has a passion the Celtic history on display all over the island of Ireland and felt that it was this aspect of his surroundings that he finds most inspiring. His final pieces reflect this, using the medium of both photography and carpentry.

BA (HONS) CREATIVE IMAGING
The final pieces work together to form one substantial body of work, integrating different parts of the Irish language, culture and history. Part of the wooden sculpture on display is the use of the nearly forgotten Celtic language of “Ogham Lettering”, using roughly hewn lines and shapes to depict the letters of the alphabet, of which there are only 20. The photographs are Nigel’s own interpretations of the culturally important Irish landmarks and landscapes, resulting in a set of three visually impactful and visceral pieces.
Nigel is hoping to continue his practice of fine art photography and mark making with a view to improving his skills as an artist. There is little that Nigel enjoys more than developing his skills in the area of study he loves, and the degree in Creative Imaging awarded through Liverpool John Moores University was the perfect opportunity for him to spend real time honing his craft to a level of excellence.

From experimenting with different mediums Rachel has learned new skills that she intends to use in her future work, although she has tried all aspects of creativity she feels photography is her forte and has chosen it as her main piece in her final year project. The photographer’s Tarquin Blake and Bousure inspired Rachel throughout her studies as they document old buildings, the main inspiration she got from them is how they can make something so old and abandoned look so beautiful. She wants to portray her own passions for documentary and history which she feels is evident in her series of final work.

When walking along in day to day life Rebecca is fascinated by people, cultures, colours and textures within society. She is particularly drawn towards the things within society that people normally don’t notice, yet this is what she wants to photograph.
Photographers that are major influences in her work at the moment are the work of Victoria Dean, Donavan Wylie and Paul Seawright. She finds it interesting learning out about the concepts behind the images they create. This work was a major influence for Rebecca, especially with in her work at present. In this series of work she has tried to capture the emotions that she was feeling from photographing them and showing
this in her imagery. Also how her photographs calm her thoughts when drawing and painting and how they form a relationship. At present Rebecca is interested in documenting the things in society others walk past with a fine art tone. Also through meeting new people and hearing about what they are being influenced by, she knows she can also learn from them.

Ryan is a Graphic Designer / Illustrator based in Belfast, currently working on a freelance basis. Having experienced various aspects of the design industry, Ryan has found himself drawn mainly to graphics and illustration. Yet he continues to develop his skills in areas such as web design and photography. This constant urge to further develop his full skillset in design has allowed Ryan to work on a wide scale of projects such as poster prints, branding, web design and brochure design etc. Having worked on such a variety of projects, this has given him the ability to fully understand the requirements of a brief and utilize
his skillset in various areas to develop the most effective final product. Ryan has found that his ability to hand sketch designs and ideas to a high level of detail and accuracy has served him greatly throughout his short career so far, allowing him to best visualize the potential that any idea may have before further developing them into a final outcome. This love of Illustration has always been something that Ryan has found himself drawn to and as a result he has been able to produce a number of illustrations for clients whether it be digitally or hand drawn.

Having focused much of his work on the degree course to graphic pieces, he decided to focus on hand illustrating his final designs to best highlight his abilities in this field. Emotion was a theme that he tried to keep in mind throughout this project as the aim of designing a portrait piece that failed to portray this would surely be destined to fall flat. With that in mind Ryan has tried to produce final pieces that offer instant depth and impact to the viewer. After this degree Ryan is planning to further develop his skills by continuing his freelance design whilst looking for a fulltime position in a design company.

The creation of a final piece, a graphic novel based on George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones television serialisation, has allowed Ryan to explore different genres and mediums of art and design. The novel includes a wide range of portrait and landscape scenes ranging from detailed pencil drawings to computer based graphic depictions, as well as photography representing the various film locations in Northern Ireland.
Having designed a professional publication, the plan is to further select the most striking pieces to be mounted and framed and displayed as showpieces. He is planning to continue working freelance and his hope for the future is to be successful in obtaining employment within the graphic design field.

Tony is primarily a photographer but after completing the HND Photography at Southern Regional College in Lurgan, the next logical step was to go for the BA(Hons) Creative Imaging course which involves exploring other forms of mark making. It has been a challenge, without previous, formal artistic training, to settle upon one particular medium with any success or passion; photography always seems to return to the fore.

BA (HONS) CREATIVE IMAGING
A diverse selection of photographers inspires Tony such as Richard Avedon, Steve McCurry, William Klein and Rineke Dijkstra but, more recently, an interest in typography has encouraged investigation into the work of Neville Brody, David Carson and Craig Ward. The list could go on and on, especially as social media promotes so many excellent artists’ work into the public domain.
The intention is to change from his current uninspiring job, using the degree as a mark of selfdevelopment over the last few years, although the determination to be more creative in his free time is probably the ultimate goal.
Thank you.

Thank you! I would love to say a massive thank you to everyone in my class for being so helpful and willing in giving up their time for photoshoots and for helping me gather up all the content I needed from them. Most of us have come to the end of our further education and it is with both great sadness and elation that I say goodbye to the SRC. There will be no more coffee breaks at 1:00pm on a Monday with both Ryan C and Ryan S (or Salty as he is known), Klaudia and Karolina, and of course Karl. These are the people I will miss the most, and it is to them I wish the fondest farewell. It has been brilliant learning along side such talented individuals. Thanks / Dziękuję, Jordan.
Thank you.
