POTTED PLANTS

Looking to incorporate some greenery into your home or office?

10

For beginner plant-lovers a great place to start is with potted plants. Plants add color, texture, and life to a room. Small potted plants can be placed on a desk, table, or shelf, to give any space the extra pop it may need. Plants are surprisingly versatile and — like artwork, furniture, and other decor — can be a powerful tool in your design arsenal.

SUCCULENT This low-maintenance plant is a very popular house plant, and for good reason! When kept in sunny spots, they only need to be watered about once a week. Succulents also come in a variety of colors for a fun addition to any space.

ALOE This easy-to-grow, sun loving plant helps clear and purify the air. Aloe is a smart choice for a sunny kitchen window. Beyond its air cleaning abilities, the gel inside the plant can help heal cuts and burns.

CACTUS Although they have a rough exterior, cactus are the most friendly plant of all that will last for many years. They require very little water and come in many shapes and sizes to fit any place in your home.

CREATE AN INDOOR GARDEN

If your love of plants starts to get out of control and your little pots start to clutter your desks and counter-tops, an alternative is to create a terrarium. Terrariums are a fun and easy way to create a little world for your plants.

14

Tillandsia plants, more commonly known as air plants, are ideal for terrariums because they do not require soil. Air plants can be placed directly in your terrarium or atop a layer of rocks for added decoration and texture. Every three days, your air plants should be taken out of the terrarium and submerged in water for about thirty minutes. Leave them to dry out for a few hours and place them back in their terrarium until it is time for their next watering.

15

GREEN IS THE PRIME COLOR OF THE WORLD, AND THAT FROM WHICH ITS LOVELINESS ARISES

16

For an added design element, you can group multiple cacti or succulents into one larger planter to free up space.

17

HANGING DREAMS

18

Love the idea of air plants but are unsure of how to display them? There are a number of ways to decorate your space with air plants. Geometric hangers can give life to an empty corner of your home. A holder like this will make a chic and modern addition to any space.

BRINGING THE OUTDOORS IN

23

Whether it be modern, farmhouse, or industrial design, plants work seamlessly with all of them, and never go out of style. There are ways to bring plants into the design as a layer of texture that are equally as important as the other accessories in the room.

R O W T H I S T H E O N LY G EVIDENCE OF LIFE The outdoors has a natural appeal to humans. The sky, water, and especially plants make us feel refreshed, calm and one with the earth. How do we get these elements from outside to inside our home? By bringing plants into our living space. Taking nature from the outdoors in is not as challenging as it may sound. Transition from small single potted succulents and cacti to the next level by purchasing a bigger plant that can sit on the floor. This addition of leafy plants will not only help bring texture into the room, but also leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated every day.

27

To fully integrate plants into the space you can disperse them throughout the room. It will unify the space to create one cohesive environment.

28

29

If you have the space, invest in a bigger house plant such as larger cactus or a snake plant. Larger plants can help fill an awkward space while adding a little something to an empty room.

EVEN THE S I M P L E S T T H I N G S CAN BE BEAUTIFUL

Tall snake plants are versatile and make great dĂŠcor for eclectic spaces. They require very little attention. Water only when the soil is completely dehydrated. Snake plants are perfect for anyone with lessthan green thumb.

HOME IS WHERE THE PL ANTS ARE

Do not let the walls of your home confine you to house plants. Window boxes and outdoor spaces such as patios, balconies, or porches could also benefit from a little green. Instead of buying completely new plants, some of your indoor plants can be easily moved outside in the warmer months of the year. Here are a few tips for transforming your houseplants into outdoor plans.

34

When making the move from indoors to outdoors, there are a few things to consider. For bigger plants, hold off on watering the plant a few days before for a lighter move. Trim off any leaves that have started to brown by cutting them on angles to reinforce their natural leaf shape. Once outside, find a spot that mimics the environment that the plant had while inside. If the plant was not in direct sunlight, it is important to acclimated it to its new surroundings. Try to putting it in a shady spot for a week or two and slowly introduce it to more direct light over time.

35

NO YARD, NO PROBLEM Living in an urban jungle can make it hard to get your daily dose of green. Creating a small sanctuary like these makes the concrete a little easier to bear. Think of your deck, balcony or porch as an extension of your indoor space.

Think about the micro-climate of your outdoor space, it will make it easier to select the types of plants that go outside. Take account the amount of sunlight and the climate that you live in. If you live somewhere with four seasons, try to find a plant like an evergreen that can stay outside through a bitter winter, or find a plant like a fern that you can take inside in the harsher weather.

OUTDOOR

INDOOR

Once outside, it is very easy to place your plants on the floor of your balcony or grouped on a small table. However, you can create a more interesting space by varying the locations of your plants. Whether they are smaller or larger pots, try placing them on different levels to create more space within the small setting. You can do this by tacking your potted plants on top of wooden crates or an old chair. Incorporating more material into your tiny green landscape will make your guests believe it was designed by a professional.
