Welcome SALE
McKenna Oglesby born April 2018
Partners In Progress XXXI Welcome back to Wadley, Georgia and what will be our 31st Partners In Progress Sale. The word “time” always pops into my head when I start writing this letter. Where does it go? How did we use it, and did we use it wisely? Farming sure is a busy way of life, but not many of us would probably trade it. As Mr. Charles turned 80 last August, I’m constantly amazed at his passion to get out every day of the week and check cows and watch the seeds that have been sown. It’s my pleasure every day to get to work with someone with that much experience, knowledge, and persistence. His dedication to farming goes so much further than this farm. To him, it’s the people that matter the most. Family and friends… and lots of them! He’s driven many a mile, attended many a sale, and taken Jennifer to many a Jr. National. He might not remember every mile, but I’m amazed that he remembers about every face. I recently read the following quote from Calvin Coolidge that states, “Little progress can be made by merely attempting to repress what is evil. Our great hope lies in developing what is good.” (Sound advice from nearly a century ago, that could certainly apply to our Nation today.) Whether we are trying to improve the soil for crops, improve the quality of cattle, or even make beef tastier than ever, it’s much easier to start with something good, while maintaining the commitment to make it better. Sometimes it involves emulating what someone else has already achieved, however sometimes it takes a leap of faith to do something no one thought was possible. I’m thankful for farmers who continuously put their faith first in a Creator, yet also in a lifestyle that sometimes isn’t always easy, but always worth it. As we continue to host one of the most diverse sales in Georgia, it’s a fun challenge to put this 3-in1 event together. Angus, Herefords, and Baldies all in one place! Because of strict selection criteria over several generations, when we see advancement in one group, the other two progress simultaneously. It’s a great time of year to come fellowship with us and appraise these cattle. As Spring nears, may your families, cattle, and crops be blessed with the newness of life. We’re thankful for all the many individuals that help make this event possible. In whatever way we can be of assistance, please let us know. Sincerely, Kyle
Regarding the term “Progress,” I share the following scripture of encouragement with you… “As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. But as for the seed that landed on good soil, these are the ones who, after hearing the word, cling to it with an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with steadfast endurance.” Luke 8: 14-15

turned into the most favorite donor dam at Smith Angus. Purchased on the side of 2037 was Deer Ridge Upshot 4120, who sired one of the elite show heifers of our 2018 sale, selling to Rylee Closser of Ohio. Five sons of 2037 have worked in our operation, in the few short years she’s been here. ★★A full sister to Lot 1 sold in our 2018 Annual Production Sale to Long Lane and Fancy Free Farm for $6,000 and another full sister was the third top-selling heifer calf in that same event. In 2017, Circle G Ranch purchased a maternal sister for $10,000. Her calves are built with real-world growth, and tremendous balance and eye appeal. ★★AI on 12/22/2018 to TEX Playbook.

★★Since I’ve been manager of this operation, starting in 2005, this is one of my all-time favorite cow families. I remember seeing Bismarck’s photograph for the first time, and knowing this was a bull to be used. Probably the first flush of Bismarck calves to hit the ground in Georgia, included the dam of T117, S/A Petunia H20. One of the first donors I was able to work with was WCS Petunia C34, a daughter of Summitcrest High Prime 0H29. A full sister to S/A Remarkable 5682 H27, the Gilloolys decided to purchase H20 from the 2012 Angus Sale, and put her into the Smith/Predestined donor program. This elite daughter of the high-quality growth sire, Schiefelbein Attractive, is sure to gain some fans on sale day.

a full sister to KMK Donna J311, J337. 4194’s dam, CCA Donna 044, was selected in the 2016 ZWT Sale by Long Lane and Fancy Free Farm for $12,500. Purchased in same event, this moderate framed, sound structured daughter of Hesston is as pretty profiling of a female as any in this sale. She passes down the ruggedness and power of Hesston into her offspring, just like she did with her stout topped, thick-ended bull calf by the ever-popular Hoover Dam who sells as Lot 20A. ★★KMK Donna J337, the grandam, is a full sister to KMK Donna J311, the $60,000 foundation Coleman donor that went on to produce the $200,000 Coleman Donna 386, the $60,000 Coleman Donna 6143 and the $48,000 Coleman Donna 801 who is a full sister to the dam of this female. ★★AI on 2/1/19 to Musgrave 316 Stunner. No. But as I consistently state, and try to direct attention towards, these are real-world cattle, built for longevity and built for the pasture. Some cattle in this industry make you work for them; K77 daughters work for you. ★★Leading off the 31st Partners In Progress Hereford division is just about as picturesque of a donor that we’ve ever let go. Stemming from a full sister to P70, the maternal heritage of N201 speaks volumes. Colbert Polled Herefords partnered up with Predestined in our 2014 sale and selected this calf at H17’s side. The first Burst The Bank 65Z daughter to go through public auction, turned into a pretty nice investment. This daughter just became a little more valuable, as we unfortunately lost 65Z this past summer. Offspring continue to surpass our expectations, all being nice balanced, big-topped, good-footed cattle. Selling alongside will be her November bull calf, sired by a Sandhill’s bull that continuously produces quality cattle for us, Cannon. The first flush of N201 produced 22 high quality eggs. Will be flushed once prior to the sale.

★★Selling ½ Interest in Cow and Bull Calf / Possession Negotiable. ★★One of Kyle’s favorites and rightfully so, as her dam made the trip to Georgia with Kyle in 2006 and lived to be 15. This 88X daughter is broody from head to tail, gorgeous-uddered, and a calf raiser. One of our up and coming herd sires is a son by Burst The Bank, and this year’s stud by Cannon has an awesome look about him. There aren’t many bull calves in the sale this year, so if you’re in the market, you need to look him over. This cow is the right kind. When breeding cattle, keep them good structured, good footed, and good uddered, and the rest will come a whole lot easier. She’s equipped with the tools, the fun part is mating selection. ★★Cow will be flushed prior to the Sale, and future flushing will be determined with new partner.

★★This matron has quite a track record, and still has still got a lot of racing left in her. CES, K-One, and Lewis Polled Herefords decided to select 7Y for their ET programs. As the dam of a past Pick of Calves in Eric Walker’s sale for $17,000, she then went on to produce the $20,000 Walker JH Captain 936 7Y 5206. Basic fundamentals of cattle breeding involve balancing visual appraisal with genetic background. Once you’ve studied this pedigree built from bulls like 4R, R117, and 25C and then add above average EPD’s for growth, milk, and carcass merit; 7Y becomes an easy choice upon phenotypical evaluation. Sells with a pretty special coupon at side that only adds more maternal merit to the package, a heifer by P606. Not much else needs mentioned. Will be flushed prior to the sale.

★★This was a last-minute decision to add this donor candidate to the sale roster this year. ★★This early November heifer was pretty cool the first time she stood up. She was stout from the ground up, and I tried to resist the urge to feature her this year. But here she is for your taking. Her mother has been a heck a female producer for the last several years, as she’s produced two top notch Burst The Bank daughters going to Dewayne Catron in 2016 and Messi Hart Farms in 2018. ★★This young brood cow was a part of a stout set of ET calves from the mating of two powerhouses, Colossal and K7. This gal was the most moderate of the group, but in my opinion the best. I first decided to just sell her yearling daughter by 936, but I wanted to build more proof of this K7 cow family this year, so we’re giving you a pretty unique offering the choice of two donor candidates, R125 or T137. R125 is due in March to a very special addition to our herd battery, P50. Sold as just a calf in our sale for $8500 to Phillip Williams, this stud has turned into possibly the best son of Mr Maternal that I’ve laid my eyes on. ★★Exposed to CES Mr Vic 156T P50 from 4/24/18-7/30/18. ★★Two of the most talked about heifers we sold in 2018, were direct daughters of this featured donor, N132. Tennessee River Music selected their choice for $8000, and Lewis Polled Herefords took the next for $6500. This cow has an ability to pass on phenotype to calves unlike most cows I’ve had the privilege to work with. She’s so unique from her shoulder forward, as well from her hip back. This donor female is top notch, but if you want advice from the guy who bred her, buy this pair for the heifer calf. I’m not sure who is higher on this Provident baby, me or Mr Charles. She’s gorgeous made, and gorgeous marked. Heifers like this young December don’t come around every day. Owned with White Columns Farm.

★★Selling choice between this pair of genetic jewels. Last year we sold two full sisters that went to our friends at Whitehawk Ranch and Whaley Polled Herefords. It’s been fun to watch what this pair of heifers has turned into. Their pure growth is unmatched in their contemporary group, especially considering they started out at 61 and 60 pounds at birth, respectively. They are truly beautiful young cows in the making, and 4013 is making his mark in the breed. Study the EPD tabulation across the board, then study the heifers in person. This package has a lot of punch.

★★This heifer could have stolen the Lot 1 position in this year’s sale. Simply Stunning was the perfect name for the grandmother of this featured heifer. Stunning herself, this is one of the most eye-appealing heifers that we’re offering this year. Very ladylike, super long-necked, long bodied, and sound as a cat. 4013 is combined with a granddaughter of Investor Gal, and the lead off cow in the record-setting Star Lake dispersal, 111X. Again, a super set of trait-leading genetics all wrapped up in a phenotypical package that takes your breath away. It’s not always easy to make them read good and look good at the same time, so you better not let this one get away. CES STUNNING 4013 T95 - Lot 110

★★This is as strong of a set of yearling heifers that I’ve possibly ever sold. This
maternal sister to Burst The Bank, is just one of the many reasons. We sold a full sister to Tyler Hunter last year, who went on the show road, bringing home several accolades. Dylan Kottkamp also led a maternal sister to Division Champion this year in Denver. Shiny Pennie, to this day, is still one of the all-time great cows that I’ve ever seen go through a sale ring. Thanks again to my friend, Max Stotz, for giving me a chance to utilize her genetics. A full brother to this featured heifer is making his way towards our herd battery this year. Having lost Burst The Bank last year, I’m excited to see if his maternal brother can outdo him. Dehorned ★★AI on 12/22/18 to /S Mandate 66589.

★★This heifer is one of two yearling Finance heifers to sell this year. I should be
holding onto this one, because I truly feel she has big-time potential. Her dam is one of the biggest bodied Mr Maternal daughters I’ve had the pleasure to work with. Deep and stout and doesn’t lose a pound raising a calf. Combine her lineage with that of Shiny Pennie and K187, and the future looks intriguing for this young March heifer. ★★This young horned female does a lot of things right, most importantly, produces a pretty special calf. If I didn’t have a full sister to this heifer going into
the donor program, I would’ve flushed this one myself. Her udder and milk quality is top of the line, and I’m as excited about this November Finance heifer as any. This pair of females carry on the cow power of E195. I feel like a broken record every year, but this lineage of cattle is truly some of the best you’ll find anywhere in the Southeast. If folks knew what kind of producer E195 was, you’d try to own every one of them. L10, M207, N6, N188, P24, P111, R42, S14…these are just some of the other direct daughters to come to mind. ★★We rarely sell 2-year-old pairs in our sale, firstly because we feel that’s a new generation to build Partners In Progress with, but secondly, we want to
give them a little more time to prove themselves to us. This one is kind of already doing that out of the gate. This one would’ve probably also entered the donor program in another year. Udder quality, eye appeal, and power genetics like 4R, 65Z and 4009. ★★Selected out of the White Hawk sale as a baby, this heifer had a special look about her. Everything about her indicated she was a brood cow in the making. Her head, her length of body, and her structure. She turned out to be just that. This cow has the credentials both phenotypically and genetically, and combined with her young heifer calf by Finance, it’s a pair of cattle that indicate true longevity and excellence towards carcass quality. One of the real nice heifer calf pairs of the offering. 32

★★Selling Choice. Descendants of the 2015 Partners In Progress Lot 1, this is a big time duo. There’s no need to write separate footnotes for them. They’re full sisters, raising full sibs in blood, that were born on the same day. This cow line is incredible. I continually tell Bob Neligan that I should’ve never put H100 in the sale that year, but I’m glad she’s in good hands. H100 is a model cow to begin with, visually speaking; however she’s also a model cow, because the next generation is just a good, if not better. One of the best heifers I saw in 2018, came out of our last sale, selling to Parker Bros. They selected a Heavy Duty heifer calf out of a 719T x H100. These 2 full siblings are a result of a H100 flush to 755T. All of her daughters are gorgeous uddered, and we’re going to incorporate a full brother this year, to keep that trait instilled in this herd. I’m pretty high on this lot, if you can’t tell.

★★We had the misfortune of losing this cow’s calf at sale time last year, as we thought she was a featured young cow in 2018. But she bred back early, and came back stronger than ever in January with her R1 heifer calf. B14 was selected on the side of a cow from John Wylie in the West Tennessee Sale. Unfortunately my kids were too young to show at the time, because Jennifer really wanted to drag this one around that year. What a beef cow she turned into. Stout and pretty are two words that come to mind. CES POLLED HEREFORDS

★★The only wet direct daughter of Mr Maternal to sell this year, and we
think you’ll like her a lot. One glance at her freckled-face and you’ll know her daddy. Once again, with strict attention towards udder quality, this female is turning into a brood matron, and in my honest opinion, donor candidate. Her mother came from the Michigan State University dispersal as a top selection, and Grant even showed the first calf that P4 had as a 2-year-old. There is a lot of balance and eye-appeal packaged up in this Maternal daughter and R1 heifer calf. Don’t miss this front pasture kind.

★★Loads of volume and rib shape is found with this Hometown daughter. A lot of credit can be given to her mother, 314, who is also the mother of Colossal. Colossal was one of the stoutest muscled herd sires that we’ve used here. Combined with real world performance, this young gal is backed by a solid EPD profile. ★★Bred Natural on 6/2/18 to STAR MKS BURST THE BANK 65Z. Confirmed Safe. CES POLLED HEREFORDS
