Material Study

Construction study and analysis

Program

The exercise was aimed at understanding materials by studying their innovative application across the world. Using images and hand sketches, their construction is analysed to explore the potential of those materials. Common construction materials like concrete, wood, metal, plastic and glass were chosen for this exercise.

Rotterdam

Program

The building site lies on the southern wharf of the Maashaven, between the water and the Brielselaan. The total program is around 11.000m2. The focus of the project was to explore architecture in terms of materials and physical form while responding to the urban condition, The exercise also laid emphasis on the architectural design of the faรงade.

site

Process

The size of the program would lead to a tower which blocks the street’s view to the harbour. This was solved by raising the public space. The final massing played with idea of a structure which displays sculptural quality by having its corners chamfered.

Materialisation

The materialisation of the facade complements the sculptural quality of the massing by using pigmented concrete panels for cladding. The texture and uneven distribution of the pigments gives the tower a unique tactile quality. The floating green terrain is attained by using vertical planter boxes which continues and connects to the roof garden to create a seamless experience.

Facade Design

Light Filtering Media Facade

Program

The brief was to design a mechanical facade which can be fixed to any existing building with automated functioning. This will have both external and internal applications. A traditional media faรงade is a large screen device which can create images using LCD or LED systems. Our idea was to reinterpret this medium and develop a system which can be a media faรงade and also a sun/lighting control device.

Camera Iris

Internal gears

Process

Working mechanism

The concept for the iris pixel was inspired from the iris diaphragm of cameras which is used for aperture control. This is a thin device located between the lens and the film for controlling the light admitted inside a camera. The final design is a facade made up of multiple light filter devices which working together will create patterns and pre programmed images.

High-Rise tower

for European Union Council

Brussels

Program

The proposed building is part of the master plan designed by Chrstian Potzamparc for the European quarters in Brussels . The program contain office spaces, conference, hotel, apartments, retail and museum. The design of the building has to reflect the spirit of European Union as an organisation and also solve the problems created by high rises in the urban fabric of today’s cities; notably the lack of connection between the street and building and the inability to relate to its immediate context.

Creating public access through site

Podium massing around public space

Process

By studying various urban public spaces in similar cities, a few guidelines were established to treat the ground level of the site. These guidelines helped to divide the site and establish patterns of public access in the site. The next step was to identify and develop a suitable architectural language which will reflect the dynamic and volatile politics and structure of the EU. A language which will also help the building relate to the low rise buildings in the imediate neighbourhood.

Concept

To represent the identity of EU was to distill the essential construct of an institution formed of disparate but mutually beneficial institutions and nation states.... these are dynamic relationships, constantly changing and evovlving as the political context changes, like a 3 dimensional tetris block. The massing of towers forms a 3 dimensional tetris sculpture.. The towers are connected by sky bridges which creates interesting meeting points for different functions and also indicate the horizontal decision making and cohesiveness of EU.

Brussels and Lace

To connect the new EU building to Brussels, it was decided to make the building refer to its host city through its architecture in such a way that it can be instantly identified . Brussels is renown for its fabrics with intricate lace works. Shops selling them are ubiquitous throughout the city and this humble clothing is identified as one of the symbols of the city.

Ceramic Fritting

The glazing of the building is covered with patterns using the process of ceramic fritting. This gives an appearance of being covered with lace. The patterns are made to provide maximum visibility while cutting down the solar gain inside the rooms. To distinguish the office and residential blocks, their patterns are inverted. This also serves a functional purpose; as the apartments needs visibility during the night while the offices during the day.

Program distribution

The three towers have different programs aimed to attain maximum efficiency for the core and climate control. But the towers meet at different levels with skybridges which provide unique and original spaces for mixed use and recreation purposes.

Podium and public space

Ground level of the podium contains programs and public attractions aimed at inviting the public inside to experience the building. The staggered profile of the podium brings down the scale and relate to that of neighbouring buildings. This profile of the podium helps the massing of the towers to connect to the ground.

Entry lobby with dining above

Entry lobby

In the case of retained part of the existing building, only the facade is retained. Inside, double height spaces create an airy light filled lobby space. This space acts as the entry lobby for the office and conference facilities within the building.

Lobby and Dining

The space above the entry lobby is the dining area, which can be used by both the conference and office occupants. This skylit space also doubles as the break out space for the auditrium when major conferences are held.

Office tower

for Wipro Technologies

Hyderabad

Program Existing buildings inside campus

An office building to support 5000 employees for a software company in a fast developing city in southern India. This will be an addition to the already existing campus designed by the same architects. The clients wanted an iconic building which will enhance its presence in a business district crowded with competing companies.

Site plan

Process

The primary goal was to redefine the image of high rise office structures and to develop a form which is inventive and at the same time create interesting spaces to work. The buildings of the existing campus follow a common architectural language of curved walls. So to maintain continuity, the design of the proposed building use the same language. The southern wall of each floor curves around in a ribbon like fashion. These twisting floors overlap and retreat creating balconies and overhangs. The whole mass is raised on a podium 4 floors high to relate to the scale of the rest of the campus.

Documentation

Majority of the services and interiors were directly dealt by the inhouse architects of Wipro, so my job was mainly to convert the architectural vision into reality. Other than the coordiantion between the on-site team and the consultants, i could involve myself in preparing the architectural drawings for finishes and other details. This helped me to learn more about materials, methods and joineries.

Students hostel

for Symbiosis University

Pune

Program

A 500 bed students housing with all modern amenities. The site for the project was a narrow plot measuring 40m x 121m. An additional challenge was the whole building was to be completed and handed over within 13months before the next academic year. I was handed the responsibility of the project architect and was part of the project from its design stage to completion, closely working with Architect Sanjay Mohe. Job handled include design presenations for clients, making working drawings, co-ordination with consultants and site management.

Process

The idea was to create and activate the central spaces between the corridors as an interaction zone. The infinite possibilities of visual connection between any levels, encourage greater interaction and meeting among students. This will shift the life of a student from the rooms onto the corridors. The central spine is open to sky with a skylight and brings in muh needed light and air into the atrium spaces below.

Documentation

Being a fast track project with a schedule of just over 13months, the schedule itself pose challenges of its own in terms of maintaining quality of finishes and fabrication. It was a great learning experience to balance structural, aesthetic and services aspects while trying to keep to an impossible schedule.

Library block

for Sreenidhi school

Hyderabad

Program

A libraary building of 1800 sqm for the Sreenidhi school in their existing campus and attached to the school building. The client requested a building which encourages students to spend more time in the library. Other than books, the building also had computer lab facilities for the children. The rest of the buildings in the campus were following the language of curved outer wall which was creating a major circulation spine through the campus. The proposed building was part of this spine and had to follow the same language.

Apartments

for Rohan developers

Pune

Program

Part of a bigger residential complex totalling 45,000 sqm in an upscale neighbourhood of Pune. Apartments ranging from studio units to 3 bedroom units with all the contemporary amenities. The project was situated near to an airport and had a height restriction of 7 floors. The facades of the buildings were treated in such a way that this scale is further reduced to a visitor.

Documentation

As a junior architect, my responsibilities included making working drawings for the main structure and site visits. The client had an on-site architectural team and our team had to co-ordinate with them on a day to day basis.

NIT Calicut 2002 . 2007

The unbuilt projects which were designed for various clients during the period i was in architectural school. Eventhough unrealised, these projects helped me understand the finer nuances of structural and other practical issues involved in construction.

Apartment

for Venkat Rao

Hyderabad

Program

The client’s requirement was for 4 units of 2 bedroom apartments and a house for himself in the ground floor. The site measures 11m x 16m and is located in a dense residential district of the city. Context The city of Hyderabad is known for its beautiful rocks. Its location on a rocky terrain has influenced the architecture of the city. The grainy texture of the walls made by worn out granite blocks is seen all over and gives the buildings of the city a character of its own. Golconda fort Hyderabad

Process

Structural grids of the apartment floors are fixed first to transfer them to the ground floor. Layout of the ground floor house was worked around these grids for a simpler structural solution. The site was located 1.2m lower than the main road level. This height difference was exploited to add a mezzanine floor by splitting the ground floor into 2 levels. This to create additional floor space and minimise the land fill required. The apartment unit bays above are staggered referring to the language of granite stone masonry found in Hyderabad.

for Premnath

Alleppey

Program

A house for a family of 4, in a relatively generous site measuring 30m x 30m. A house which resepects and sustain the tradiional way of social life and be climate responsive. A house built in contemporary architectural language but stays rooted in context. Context Alleppey is located in a hot and humid region. the vernacular architecture of the region is known for its ingenious ways to counter this harsh climate. The most famous example of this is the Padmanabhapuram palace in Trivandrum which uses wooden screens and expansive eaves to protect from rains and ventilate the interiors.

Process

The house was designed around courtyards. The widths of the room are kept at 3m to give more light and air circulation inside. They were then connected and placed along North South direction, facing east. The loggias and wide verandas are the activity spaces prepare the inhabitants for a change of mood and light. A sense of anticipation and surprise is created by slight shifting of this axis and using blank walls, but at the same time, making sure that clarity in direction and movement is maintained.
