Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends, As many of you know, I am the former owner of The Julia Dean Photo Workshops and am now the executive director of the Los Angeles Center of Photography. We’ve been around for more than 14 years now, but this is our first year as a nonprofit. A number of fortunately good decisions helped to keep JDPW going over the years and bring us to this point. The first good decision, many years ago, was to reach out to the photo community to ask for help. Because of that, our workstudy program was born. Today, we have 30 people in our work-study program and we couldn’t exist without them. The second great decision was to invite other instructors to teach, like Aline Smithson, who has single-handedly built our fine art program in addition to all her other contributions. Aline is now also a member of LACP’s board of directors. The third good decision is when I hired Brandon Gannon, our Director of Operations and Education, who I credit for saving my sanity and my business. The fourth good decision was when we hired Kasia Czerski, who quickly became a crucial, efficient member of our team as Manager of Programs and Events. The fifth significant decision was when we decided to go nonprofit and invite Michael Miller, my dear friend and Senior Vice-President and Managing Director of Northern Trust, to be our board president. All these people, and many more, are why we are still here and about to thrive as a nonprofit photo center offering more than 150 classes a year, taught by more than 80 different instructors. We have big plans. We hope you will be part of them. You can start by becoming a LACP member so we can keep you abreast of our ever-expanding array of opportunities. Thank you for reading, and thanks for your support of the Los Angeles Center of Photography. Sincerely,
Julia Dean, Executive Director

Digital Infrared with Nevada Wier
Classic Hollywood Lighting with Loren Hammer
Move beyond the broad, diffused light of a light box and enter the world of the focused light source—the Fresnel—the light fixture that started it all. In this intensive five-day workshop, students will learn the techniques of hardening, softening, shaping and focusing light to create effects associated with the stylized glamour and aesthetics of classic film noir: the looks of German Expressionism, Neorealism, and the films of the fifties, sixties and seventies. One-week intensive (five sessions) Wednesday-Sunday, August 20-24, 10 am- 6 pm Instructor: Loren Hammer (www.lorenhammer.com) Enrollment limit: 15 students Skill/Experience level: No lighting experience is necessary. Students should have a working knowledge of their camera and the ability to shoot in manual mode. 10 Tuition: $1,095 + $300 model, equipment and location permit fee Become a Member

Infrared photography is a way of creating images using the invisible infrared light that strikes your subject. Long-time infrared experimenter Nevada Wier calls it “invisible poetry,” because in the process of studying this technique, you move beyond your usual methods of photographing and discover a new way of seeing the world. Infrared is not only ideal for creating unusual, surreal landscapes, but it’s also startling for portrait and still life photography. By the end of this short workshop you are a maven of invisible light and a maker of photographic poetry! Weekend intensive (three sessions) Friday, July 25, 7- 9 pm + Saturday and Sunday, July 26-27, 10 am- 6 pm Instructor: Nevada Wier (www.nevadawier.com) Enrollment limit: 18 students Skill/Experience level: Open to all levels Tuition: $875

Sharpening Your Photographic Vision with Sam Abell
The Photographic Essay with Joel Sartore
© Sam Abell

How do you make a full portrait of another person? By setting aside what you think you see and look at who is really there. Look with the eyes, the mind, the heart, and make your picture not just of them but about them. This workshop will be an intensive investigation into seeing people and then making a photo. The goal is not to learn “portrait techniques” but to extend ourselves, explore possibilities, make authentic work, and find ways to represent humans, both others and ourselves, in a way that is creative and authentic.
SPECIAL GUESTS
Every photographer must answer the following two questions posed by the great Welsh Magnum photographer, David Hurn; where do you stand and when do you press the shutter? Of the two, the matter of where you stand is far more complex, with emotional, psychological and political ramifications. In this workshop, students will explore this question and many more by photographing daily assignments, editing work, and reviewing portfolios. The goal is to help students integrate their photography into their lives so that both are enriched.
Join National Geographic photographer Sam Abell as he conducts a weekend workshop divided amongst shooting assignments, portfolio reviews, and discussions all with one purpose: creating images that have more clarity while simultaneously developing a true, unique personal vision. Sam will discuss his technique of seeing in layers, the importance of seeing well, and how to see with more discriminating power. The goal of this workshop is to help each participant discover where they are now and where their work can take them.
Being able to assemble and edit a photo essay is a crucial skill for any photographer. An effective essay can help you capture the eye of photo editors and art directors. Joel Sartore, freelance photographer for National Geographic, has spent 20 years documenting wildlife and environmental issues all over the Western Hemisphere. In every situation, the mandate from his editors is the same—tell the story in a handful of well-shot images. In this course, he’ll share his methods for shooting and editing a solid photographic essay.
