THE STREET PHOTOGRAPHERS’ RESOURCE GUIDE 2018

DEDICATION This book is dedicated to all those photographers who have taken part in our Street Shooting Program at the Los Angeles Center of Photography. Many of my street shooting comrades have used this resource guide to win competitions, get work published and exhibited, and to make contacts with other street photographers while traveling in different parts of the world. Street photography has become a universal language.

Julia Dean, the last apprentice to famed photographer, Berenice Abbott, a photographer and photography educator for the past 35 years, is the founder and executive director of the Los Angeles Center of Photography. Throughout her career, Julia was a photo editor for the Associated Press in New York, a ski photographer in Colorado and a white water rafting photographer in West Virginia. She has traveled to more than 45 countries while freelancing for numerous relief groups, non-profits, and magazines. Her extensive teaching experience includes 16 years at various colleges, universities and educational institutions and 19 years at the Los Angeles Center of Photography. Julia has concentrated on street photography around the world for many years. For the past seven years, street shooting in downtown Los Angeles has been her primary focus. Julia received a Bachelor of Science degree in photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology and a Master of Arts degree in journalism at the University of Nebraska, and is the author/photographer of the award-winning children’s book by Houghton Mifflin, A Year on Monhegan Island. http://juliadean.com

COMPETITIONS + OPPORTUNITIES

ACUITY PRESS / PDN https://streetphotographybook.com Acuity Press and PDN magazine joined together to promote street photography by offering a competition for photographers to get work published in an annual street photography book. Twenty photographers and six of their street photographs are selected for this book. Each photographer receives two books and additional gifts from various sponsors. There is a fee to enter.

Acuity Press / PDN offered their first competition in 2015 for street photographers around the world. I was hoping to get a picture in the book, not knowing that only 20 photographers would be selected and each photographer would get six pictures in the book. I learned that I won because a stranger reached out via Facebook to tell me congratulations. I am very pleased to be amongst the other 19 talented street photographers in this book. Julia Dean | Los Angeles, CA | http://juliadean.com

I was selected by Acuity Press / PDN to be one the 20 photographers to be featured in their 2015 book on street photographers. In June 2014, Black and White magazine used my street portrait series for their Spotlight feature. The Street Portrait series is also the subject of my second book “The Flash of Recognition.” My photographs are like my children. You send them out into the world and hope that they succeed. When they get published or exhibited, I am humbled by the honor and encouraged to continue to make more insightful images.

I was really happy the moment I won the Acuity Press / PDN Street Photography 2015 and 2016 because of the judges like Alex Webb , Colin Westerbeck, and others. They were my idols when I started learning street photography. It makes me feel so good that I want to keep shooting. Issaret Chalermsopone | Bangkok, Thailand | https://flickr.com/issaret

STREETWISE http://darkroomgallery.com/ex95 Streetwise was a juried photography exhibition 2017 in a dedicated gallery space called, The Darkroom Gallery, located in Vermont. Bruce Gilden was the juror.

This past May, 2017 I had one of my images chosen to be in the exhibition called Streetwise at the Darkroom Galley. This show was juried by Bruce Gilden. I was very thrilled about this as he is one of the great gurus of Street Photography and he selected an image of mine which gave me some validation of my work. “STREET SHOOTING AROUND THE WORLD” COMPETITION https://lacphoto.org/programs-services/street-shooting-program/ The Los Angeles Center of Photography hosts a STREET WEEK in LA each year, which includes workshops, speakers, and an exhibit. Fifty photographs are selected by a juror to take part in the exhibit. First prize takes home $1,000. Second prize is a $600 gift certificate for any class at LACP. Third prize is a street photography book. There is a fee to enter the competition.

My enthusiasm for photography was greatly enhanced when I was advised of a winning entry in LACP’s “Street Photography Around the World” competition. It confirmed a belief that I possessed talent and motivated me to dedicate more time and energy to this passionate hobby. Entering contests has since become a learning process akin to a silent portfolio review comparing my submissions to others. Norman Schwartz | Los Angeles, CA | http://nsaphoto.com

One of my street photos was chosen to be included in the “Street Shooting Around the World” exhibit at the Los Angeles Center of Photography a couple of years ago. The juror was notable street photographer Matt Stuart. It was a great feeling to be recognized and to learn that it is not only my mother who thinks I am a good photographer. Victor Ramos | Los Angeles, CA | https://www.victormramosphoto.com

After joining Julia’s street photography workshop, I was able to push through my insecurities and fears and challenge myself to produce work that was reflective of my abilities as a photographer. The first street shot I submitted was to LACP’s “Street Shooting Around the World” competition. The competition was juried by Sam Abell. He told me that my shot “I Woke Up Like This” was the first shot that he selected for that particular show. I would later have one of my street photos selected for the APA “Off The Clock” exhibition in 2015, as well as several other shots in juried LACP exhibits. Most recently, I’ve had two of my editorial photographs selected for the Revolution Issue (Fall 2017) of the Los Angeles Review of Books. My growing confidence and strength as a photographer is in large part due to my work with Julia Dean.

Ali LeRoi | Los Angeles, CA | https://alileroi.camera

For many years I photographed alone on streets from New York to San Francisco. On a whim, I entered the “Street Photography Around the World” competition at the Los Angeles Center of Photography. Getting a place in an exhibition judged by Matt Stuart gave me more confidence and the impetus to work harder with more discipline. I have not forgotten that first public acknowledgement from Stuart and LACP. David Clarkson | Monterey, CA | http://clarksonphoto.com

I started to submit work to street photography competitions in 2014 and have won international awards since then. One of the prizes I am very proud of is receiving the first place prize in LACP’s “Street Shooting Around the World” because this competition doesn’t judge the winner from a single picture, but rather with the best “body” of work. Tavepong Pratoomwong | Bangkok, Thailand | http://tavepong.com

I am a big fan of street photography and even though it is not my primary genre, I have taken street shooting workshops and occasionally submit an entry to a contest or gallery call, including the 2016 Street Shooting Around the World competition at the Los Angeles Center of Photography. One of my images was selected by juror Matt Stuart. Having him choose my photograph boosted my confidence to submit other work to other street shooting calls. Maureen Haldeman | Los Angeles, CA | http://maureenhaldemanphotography.com

I was delighted when I heard I had won third place in the LACP Street Photography Around the World contest. I received the news by telephone and tried to keep my cool. As soon as I hung up, I started jumping up and down in happy delirium. Once the initial effect wore off, I was back on the streets, just another camera in the crowd. The search for great shots continues. Gail Just | Los Angeles, CA | https://lastreetcollective.com/gail-just

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC DAILY DOZEN http://yourshot.nationalgeographic.com/daily-dozen Each day a National Geographic editor selects a dozen photos to display on their website. They are looking for compelling photos of various subject matter. They list 20 different categories, not including street photography, but they do include black & white, culture, people places, and travel. This contest is free.

My image “Girl and Chick,” was selected in National Geographic Daily Dozen. Every day, the magazine’s editors publish online their top twelve images from a pool of submissions from all over the world, and the public is asked to vote on their favorite over a 24-hour period. The image with the greatest number of votes has a chance to get published in the actual magazine. I was absolutely thrilled about the recognition, and although I’m non-existent on social media, I reached out to family and friends for support. As the day progressed, I was flabbergasted to see the fervor and enthusiasm with which people from all threads of my life joined forced to support my photograph of a girl and a baby chicken locking their gaze. My parents had gone so far as to campaign internationally, reconnecting with extra distant relatives and ancient classmates whom they hadn’t spoken to in decades. For 24 hours I felt an intense and beautiful connection with the world that was thrilling and nourishing. I imagine that the times we’re living in also had something to do with it. When the world feels like it’s about to fall apart, a newly hatched chick can make one hope.

Thouly Dosios | Los Angeles, CA | https://www.lastreetcollective.com/thouly-dosios/

For years my dream job has been to make photographs for National Geographic so I am thrilled when their editors selected one of my photos for the National Geographic Daily Dozen. Two of my photos have been selected so far and I’m hoping for more. Andy House | Los Angeles, CA | http://andyhousephotos.com

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ASSIGNMENTS http://yourshot.nationalgeographic.com/assignments-stories Anyone is welcome to contribute their best photographs when National Geographic offers “open assignments.” This contest is not focused on street photography, but rather many different topics that may also include street shots. Past assignments have been “Cities in Black & White,” “In the Shadows,” “Our World in Motion,” among many others.

I mostly submit to juried competitions where I feel my work will fit best. It’s thrilling to be selected by a juror I really admire. Win or lose, it’s always interesting to see what appeals to the juror. I especially enjoy submitting to the National Geographic Assignments. With thousands of images pouring in from all over the world, it is truly an honor to be included in the final published story. Sally Ann Field | Los Angeles, CA | http://sallyannfield.com

Another dream come true was to have my Havana photo story published online by National Geographic, earning me an invitation to South Korea in September 2016 to shoot an assignment in Seoul with a National Geographic editor. What a blast! Dotan Saguy | Los Angeles, CA | http://dotansaguy.com

URBAN INTERNATIONAL PHOTO AWARDS http://urbanphotoawards.com/gallery/gallery-2017 Urban International Photo Awards is a world wide photo contest that looks for talent and quality both among professional and amateur photographers, offering photographers a way in which to get noticed. There is a fee to enter.

My photography won second place in the Urban Photo Awards of the Trieste Photos Days. They put on a great gallery show in Trieste, Italy and gave me a medal for it. There was no cash prize, but the small community of photographers and fun dinners they scheduled while I was there were more than enough. I came out of it with friends from all over the world and a chance to see a part of Italy I would have never known about. It made me feel very confident in my editing and shooting abilities and solidified my love of how street photography can bring people together. I have since entered again this year and am part of the traveling street photography exhibition, which is currently showing across Poland, Hungary, Italy, Germany and Slovenia. I-SHOT-IT http://i-shot-it.com Leica offers this competition. There are 13 different categories including Street Photography and Black & White Photography. Some of these categories are free, others have a fee. First prizewinner receives cash (the more people that enter, the more cash you win) and a Leica camera, plus the work is shown on the website and highlighted as the winner. There are second and third place winners and honorable mentions, also shown on the website as winning images.

I entered Leica’s I-Shot-It competition in the street shooting category in 2015 and to my delight won first place, which brought $2,600 and a Leica camera with a value of $2,400. I entered because I told all my students about the competition and thought I should try too. It was such a wonderful feeling to have one of my favorite street shots highlighted in this way. MISSOURI PHOTO WORKSHOP http://mophotoworkshop.org The Missouri Photo Workshop has been documenting small town America for over six decades. This is a wonderful opportunity to work with outstanding contemporary photojournalists and to learn how to tell a compelling story through images.

While taking Julia’s Street Photography class, I began to photograph a church that meets out on the streets in Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. With those set of photographs, I was accepted into the Missouri Photo Workshop, which has catalyzed my transition into becoming a photojournalist. The Missouri Photo Workshop gave me the confidence to travel and document stories in Bangladesh, Thailand, and Indonesia. But this all started with Julia’s street photography class. Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP) was established in October 2013 and obtained a 501(c)3 tax-exempt status in 2014. Before LACP, the entity was called “The Julia Dean Photo Workshops” (JDPW), which was created and founded in 1999 by Julia Dean, LACP’s executive director. The mission of the Los Angeles Center of Photography is to build a community of dedicated photographers and to strengthen the importance of photography as an art form. This is achieved by providing education, scholarships, grants, exhibits, public programs and events, focused programming for youth and low-income families, and community outreach.
