Dear Friends, Occasionally people ask me why I decided to go non-profit, after 14 years as The Julia Dean Photo Workshops. I always laugh, and say it is because we’ve been non-profit all along, so we decided to make it official. That’s the non-serious (though true) answer. The serious answer is because once we looked into it, we realized that becoming a non-profit could enable us to raise extra money to do good things for the community. The photo community. The Los Angeles Community. Plus, it would enable us to raise money for photography programs for underserved kids. This is what I have always wanted to do. A decade ago, before we were non-profit, the Ronald & Catherine Gershman Foundation gave me a bundle of money (through a fiscal sponsor) for a month-long summer program for underserved teens. In the morning, young teens came in for class. In the afternoon, older teens would arrive. They came everyday for a month of instruction. They were given brand new digital cameras to keep, plus we put on an exhibit of their work at the end of the summer. It was a wonderful program, however, after two years, we decided that we weren’t really reaching the right kids, so we ceased that effort. Flash forward a decade. With non-profit status, I started rethinking how best can we reach underserved kids? And how do we get them all here? An idea flashed through my head. Why not take our program to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Los Angeles County where they already have kids, a classroom, and structure? My friend Louis Kravitz, a former board member of the Boyle Heights Boys & Girls Club loved my idea. Once I told him that I would teach a year-long program if he could find the money for cameras, he took on my challenge and within a month had 15 cameras for the kids. With another grant from the Ronald & Catherine Gershman Foundation a year later, we put on a wonderful exhibit of 50 photos by these nine kids from Boyle Heights, photos of their community along Cesar E. Chavez Ave. It was big day for the kids and their families and for us at the Los Angeles Center of Photography. There are 26 Boys & Girls Clubs in Los Angeles and we would love to implement our program in all of them as we raise the money. These are some of our goals. We have more. Stay tuned! Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely,

Julia Dean, Executive Director

Stretching Your Frame of Mind with Joe Baraban

The Black and White Master Print with George DeWolfe

© Joe Baraban

© George DeWolfe

The Black and White Master Print revives the idea of a masterpiece. During this workshop we will use the tools and workflow in Lightroom and Photoshop that mine the intricacies of presence, the fundamental characteristic of a masterpiece.

Imagine yourself with an artist’s palette in your hand. A recently stretched canvas is waiting on an easel, and a jar full of cleaned brushes sits on a small table next to you. Cobalt and ultramarine blue, raw sienna and burnt umber are positioned side by side while chromium oxide green, cadmium red and yellow lie together opposite them. They have all been squeezed from tubes, asking to be mixed together.

A masterpiece is the result of an artist’s individual authentic genius. That authenticity creates presence—the key element of an authentic masterpiece—and the final result of light working on the forms of an object or scene. This workshop advocates this relationship and lays out the perceptual and technical skills necessary to practice and achieve presence. We’ll see how the great painters in history made presence; discuss how the modern science of lightness perception has improved our ability to help us see like the brain sees (not as the camera sees); learn skills of black-and-white tonal perception with exercises designed to improve our visual and emotion response to black-and-white tonal values; talk about reflective practice, the skill that makes a master printer; go through a Lightroom and Photoshop workflow, step-by-step, and spend the rest of the time printing.

Now imagine that instead of all those wonderful pigments, your palette holds the elements of visual design and composition. Vanishing point, negative space, perspective, tension, color, texture, pattern, and line have been etched into the aged wood. Remember, you’re still an artist, but a camera on a tripod has now replaced the stretched canvas and easel. In this unique, weekend intensive workshop, Joe Baraban will help you “stretch your frame of mind” while developing your eye. Joe will show you how to incorporate elements of design and composition into your imagery. A new, finely tuned vision will be the result, and you will walk away armed with the ability to create powerful and memorable photographs.

George DeWolfe’s (www.georgedewolfe.com) images are born out of the penetrating awareness of photographic moments that are highly personal, intuitive and sublime. His artistic practice incorporates ideas from Buddhism and Gestalt Psychology, and encourages photographers to recapture a certain perceptual naiveté that we inadvertently unlearn as we grow. George’s numerous publishing credits include At Home in the Wild, a book on New Hampshire’s White Mountains. His most recent honor was Award for Artistic Excellence presented by The National Park Service. George has photographed for many environmental organizations over the past 40 years including Appalachian Mountain Club, Sierra Club, Friends of the Earth, Mass Audubon, National Park Service, America Rivers, and Friends of Acadia. He is a member of the American Alpine Club.

After receiving his BA in Journalism, Joe Barban (www.joebaraban. com) ventured out into the freelance world and never looked back. For the past forty years, Joe has shot for clients from Coca Cola to Hennessy, Cessna to IBM. A proficient instructor, Joe has taught the Maine Media Workshops, the Texas Photo Workshop, the Houston Center for Photography, the South Florida Workshop, and more. His honors include two gold medals in the New York Art director’s show and the Don Belding award in Los Angeles, among others. Seeing Like a Camera, Editing Like a Master with David H. Wells

Seeing the Light with Patrick Harbron

© David H. Wells

© Patrick Harbron

Suitable for all levels, this workshop effectively teaches students the art of creating environmental portrait stories while simultaneously building the framework for a professional photography business.

Despite what the camera manufacturers claim, gear doesn’t make you a better photographer. To become a better photographer, you need to take a lot of pictures and select the best few. The two hardest things about photography are learning to see like a camera and learning how to select which are the best images after you have been photographing.

On Sunday, the class returns to LACP for a morning critique of Saturday’s work. Then, Patrick will lead a discussion on “25 things you need to know to be a photographer” and how to effectively blend art and commerce. Students will discover the differences between corporate, magazine and advertising clients and how to market to them. Social networking will be covered, in addition to discussion on the value of promotional mailer pieces, portfolios, websites and source books. Further topics will include understanding contracts, agreements, invoices, estimates, releases and the importance of registering copyrights.

During the second day we will explore “editing like a master” as we learn how to properly critique and edit photographs. We will explore the common language for critiquing photographs and discuss the photographic tools, elements and techniques the photographer used, successfully or unsuccessfully, as we select a small set of the best images from each participant’s work. Students leave this part of the class with an education in the art of photo editing.

Patrick Harbron (www.patrickharbron.com) a native of Toronto, Canada began his career photographing the luminaries of rock and roll. His photography of Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Michael Jackson and many more have been featured as album and DVD covers. His editorial and advertising clients include LIFE, Rolling Stone, Time, Forbes, People, Apple, IBM, American Express and more. Patrick is also a contributor to The Kennedy Center Honors and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and his awards include The International Photography Awards, Hasselblad Masters, The Art Director’s Club of Canada and American Photography.

David H. Wells (www.davidhwells.com) is a freelance documentary photographer and photo-educator based in Providence, Rhode Island. His “Light Studies” have appeared in a wide range of exhibitions and publications including the Philadelphia Inquirer Sunday Magazine and Rhode Island Monthly. He has received two Fulbright Fellowships, a grant from Nikon/N.P.P.A. and a fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. He has taught workshops at the International Center for Photography in NYC and the Maine Media Workshops. Weekend-Intensive (three sessions)

G U ES T S

In this weekend-intensive workshop, we will spend the first day learning to “see like a camera.” Students will discover that seeing like a camera is a skill like any other skill, one that requires learning in the proper techniques followed by hours of practice. Together we will explore these techniques through a series of shooting exercises, finding how to better understand available light, how it is shaped by the time of day, the photographer’s positioning, and more.

S PE C I A L

After a Friday evening orientation session, Saturday will be spent studying the skills and techniques that go into making great environmental portraits. Venturing onto the streets of Los Angeles, students will discover how to turn any street scene into a perfect location for a portrait story. Participants will learn tips on composition, color temperature, framing, spontaneous lighting and connection with their subject.

Effective photographs are instantaneous and intuitive, but building a body of work requires thought and preparation. In this workshop we will focus on building concrete strategies towards developing your ideas, deepening themes, and establishing an ongoing visual dialogue with your subject.

S PE C I A L

G U ES T S

There is a noticeable difference between an ordinary portrait and a dramatic portrait. The dramatic portrait establishes a connection to the soul of the subject and the photographer’s execution in capturing that connection. The near mystical play of dark and light, the angle that is just right, or the suggestive spread of a shadow to accent an expression can elevate a photo to a much higher creative plane.

Join photographer Matt Black for a workshop that focuses on developing and deepening your connection and commitment to long-term documentary work. The commitment we will explore is twofold– both to your subject, and to your work. Students will learn how to follow themes and ideas over time and build their photographs into cohesive bodies of work that are socially relevant and personally meaningful.

In this studio and location lighting workshop, join photographer Michael Grecco, recognized as a “lighting master” by Photo District News, as he teaches students how to create a dramatic portrait. Using his own work as reference, Michael will explain his techniques for creating light and shadow. He will explain his specialty lighting, and show you the setups he used to create the striking signature looks of notable celebrities. Participants will be challenged to reinvent how he or she sees light and shadow and how to add touches of both to construct a technically and artistically striking image.

Through class assignments and discussion, the workshop will sharpen your perceptive skills as a photographer and work to bridge the gap between your ideas and how you photograph. The goal is to establish a personal, authentic, and ongoing visual dialogue with the world around you. Individual portfolio reviews and meeting with Matt are also included in the workshop.

Saturday will be spent in-studio. On Sunday, the class will move onlocation to eclectic Venice Beach. Suitable for photographers of all levels, this workshop is for the amateur through the most advance professional with an interest in lighting that goes beyond the sun.

On Friday evening, participants will receive a portfolio review that will be shared with the entire class. The workshop will then meet Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 12 pm and again from 2-4 pm. These meetings will include shooting the nude and analyzing the results. Ralph will demonstrate how to pose the model in addition to discussing various issues such as lighting and focal length. Students will learn how to utilize the surrounding environment to their advantage, using simple, natural lighting techniques without the use of artificial light. While this workshop will cover many technical aspects of what makes a lasting nude image, the emphasis will be on working with models and the concept of the powerful nude to create images that truly reflect the strength and artistry of the female body.

When we talk about a photographer’s personal vision, we refer not only to the present and how one can photograph with a more refined way of seeing—we must also encompass the complete experiences and ambitions of the photographer, fully embracing one’s past work and future projects. Only by editing and understanding one’s past work, sharpening and refining current work, and devoting oneself to future projects will the photographer truly develop and realize a unique photographic vision.

One of the most exciting places to be these days in Los Angeles is the LA River. The river has long been an iconic landscape in the City of Los Angeles, internationally known as a backdrop for movies like Terminator 2 and Grease. It is also where the city’s origins began as the first settlers made their home along its banks. For many years, the river itself was the primary source of water for the growing city. Today, the LA River is experiencing a rebirth and rejuvenation, a transformative time in its history as it so slowly but surely returns to its natural state.

Owning a digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera can be both exciting and challenging. This one-day course will assist students in understanding the controls and functions of their digital SLR’s. Camera menu options such as image quality and size, focus and exposure modes, and color space and white balance settings will be covered. Fundamental technical information including aperture, shutter speed, ISO and exposure will also be discussed. Throughout the day, workshop participants will have opportunities to experiment shooting with their new skills. By the end of this hands-on intensive workshop, each photographer will be well on his or her way to achieving successful digital capture. Open to students who own a digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera. Students uncertain regarding their type of camera suitable for this class should contact the Los Angeles Center of Photography at 323-464-0909.

The idea behind this class is to have students learn how to use their digital camera with predictable and repeatable results while having fun in the process, and to begin to communicate through photography instead of just taking snapshots.

Southern California native Amanda Keller-Konya (www.amanda kellerkonya.com) received an MFA from Otis College of Art and Design, a BFA from California Institute of the Arts and an MA from California State University, Northridge. Her work has been exhibited regionally and internationally at a variety of cultural institutions including the University of Texas Centennial Museum, The Annenberg Space for Photography, the Studio for Southern California History and the Angkor Photography Festival in Siem Reap, Cambodia. In addition to her Los Angeles based studio practice, Amanda teaches at California State University Northridge, El Camino College, Long Beach City College and The Los Angeles Center of Photography.

Crash Flash 1: On-Camera Flash with Julia Dean

Crash Flash 2: Off-Camera Flash with Julia Dean

Photo by Safi Shabaik, past "Crash Flash" student

Photo by Iris Debelder, past "Crash Flash" student

In this workshop, students will learn how to use a flash unit in various lighting situations. First, we will go over all the buttons and dials on the flash. The day is then divided between lectures and demonstrations on different ways to use a flash. Shooting time follows each demonstration so students can put the information to use. The lecture begins with discussions on why and how to use a flash as the main source of light (meaning a low-light situation requiring use of a flash) and how to use a flash as a fill light (balancing ambient light with the light of a flash unit). We will also explore how to determine exposure, how to control the light output of a flash, ways to diffuse a flash, and how and why to include or exclude ambient light. Demonstrations will include using a flash in a direct or bounce mode.

This class is for students who have taken Crash Flash 1: On Camera Flash and want to learn how to light more beautifully by getting the flash off camera. Julia will demonstrate how to use a single flash or multiple flashes off camera to achieve a beautiful “quality” of light. We will use light stands, umbrellas, and gels—in the studio and on location, in both the TTL mode and in manual mode with wireless technology. There will be a four-hour shoot in the afternoon with models to put all the techniques into play. At the end of the day, a critique will take place to view students’ work. Please bring camera, flash(es), memory cards, extra batteries (for camera and flash), jump drive (for transferring your images for critique), light stand, bracket (that goes between the light stand and the flash—make sure it has a slot for an umbrella), umbrella (medium size), wireless transmitters. Please bring plenty of extra batteries for your flash units.

Though the day is spent mostly with the flash on camera, students will also learn how to improve the quality of light by using the flash off camera (in hand or by bracket). This is done with either a TTL cord or with wireless technology. Both will be demonstrated. We will also discuss how to “power down” the flash input for specific effects.

NOTE: Do not be concerned if you don’t have the money to purchase or rent all of the above. We have some equipment at LACP. You’ll be working in groups, so we’ll make sure each group has all the equipment necessary.

Students seeking to advance their portable flash skills are encouraged to take Crash Flash 2: Off-Camera Flash where they will learn to improve the quality of the light by using flash off camera, with stands and umbrellas.

Introduction to Location Lighting with Jennifer Emery

Introduction to Studio Lighting with Kawai Matthews

© Kawai Matthews

Mastering the skill of lighting on location takes planning in addition to technical savvy. Photographers must be capable of scouting an appropriate location, assessing how time of day will affect the outcome, and determining what quality of light will best facilitate the mood of the picture. Will it be a blend of ambient and artificial light, or does the strobe dominate? Do we use direct or indirect light, hard or diffuse light? How do we adapt to organic changes in the physical environment? This workshop is designed to help answer these questions.

Mastering the tools of lighting is the key to mastering studio photography. In this six-week workshop, students will gain a solid foundation of studio lighting and practical knowledge of light. Working hands-on with the equipment, participants will learn how to select the proper light source for their subjects whether shooting portraits, still life or product.

In this four-session workshop, explore the workings, both creative and technical, behind producing the intimate portrait in natural light. Instructor Just Loomis guides students in looking closely at the relationship between photographer and subject, with the goal of creating a series of emotionally resonant images while exploring important natural light technical issues.

This one-day studio lighting course is designed as a basic introduction to lighting portraits in a controlled studio environment. In addition to learning technical use of equipment, participants will explore why great lighting, composition and styling are important elements in the creation of a successful portrait, as well as delving into other techniques that will help the photographer in connecting to the essence of the subject.

Just explains and demonstrates his method of working—a significant part of which has to do with interpersonal connections: finding and approaching a subject, helping a subject overcome shyness and fears, and establishing trust and rapport. He will also discuss the importance of understanding why you as a photographer are drawn to certain human characteristics and why this is crucial to the creation of engaging portraiture. Lectures will consist of examining other important photographers and their body of work, as well as overcoming technical challenges when photographing portraits in natural light. Further, Just will work individually with each participant to asses their strengths and progression.

The day begins with a discussion and demonstration examining the details of light quality. What makes a light source soft versus hard, and which quality is appropriate for portraiture? There will be discussion on lighting for skin tones, eyes and hair and ways of dealing with those attributes. Participants will experiment with assignments throughout the day, learning how to create and manipulate a wide range of light qualities. Basic light modifiers, including soft boxes, umbrellas, beauty dishes, and grids will be employed, with the strengths and weaknesses of each being discussed. The role of light in a photograph to create mood, depth, dimension, and texture will also be examined. Examples of successful portraits by legendary and contemporary photographers will be analyzed, serving as a source of inspiration.

The first class session introduces students to shooting tethered, the process of photographing directly to a computer while working in the studio or on location and to shooting eCommerce imagery for on-line customers. The following class will focus on creating landing pages and banners to draw the customer into the site. Creating engaging product photography for accessories is next on the agenda. The class will end by creating a look book around a current fashion trend. A final review will tie all the elements together to give a solid basis for creating fashion imagery for eCommerce sites.

&

The human form is beautiful to work with photographically. Lighting is one of the most important elements to consider in the creation of a nude image. Chiaroscuro in art is an Italian term that literally means ‘light-dark’. In paintings the description often refers to tonal variations which are used to suggest the volume and modeling of the subjects depicted. This type of lighting lends itself well to the nude due to the lost and found quality is has.

L I G H T I N G

Perfectly designed for photographers looking to gain a broad, practical understanding of shooting fashion, this six-session class provides essential information that can be immediately applied by anybody looking to break into the field. The class will focus on creating the wide range of imagery necessary to create fashion photography for eCommerce and online retail stores.

The Next Step 1 with Aline Smithson

Finding Your Visual Voice with Sara Terry

© Sara Terry

This is a workshop about the emotional and sub-conscious content of photos and how to make photos that come from that place, helping you to truly define your own voice as a photographer. It is not a workshop about making “good” photos. It’s about setting aside technical know-how (and the obstacles that often come with that) and accessing intuitive, reflective ways of working that will lead you to make photos that only you can make.

This class instructs the emerging photographer on how to present work to the fine art and documentary markets. It also provides an insight into the world of photography and helps photographers package themselves and their work in a professional manner. Throughout the course new work will be encouraged and portfolios will be shaped and edited. Participants will learn how to build and write a résumé, how to construct a bio, and how to title and write personal statements about their work. Students will enter photography competitions, submit to publications and prepare work for exhibition. Information about grants, portfolio reviews and exhibition proposals are also covered. The work of a new and established fine art photographers are studied so that participants will understand what makes a successful series. Furthermore, guest photographers will be invited to share their journeys.

Rather than focusing on the “how” of making and composing photographs, this workshop focuses on weekly problem-solving assignments that are designed to engage students with the emotions and personal connections involved in creating photographs that truly reveal a personal visual voice. Each week, we will review the work that students have made and choose one photo made from the assignment, a visual “word,” resulting in a complete visual sentence at the end of the workshop. The Portrait Series with Ken Merfeld

The Daily Visual with Ken Merfeld

How dedicated are you to your craft? What percentage of each day do you spend shooting, dealing with, or thinking about photography? Do you walk the streets with your camera? Do you wish you could shoot every day? Now you can. The Daily Visual workshop is intended to motivate you to shoot every day, no matter what.

Ken Merfeld (www.merfeldphotography.com, www.merfeldcollodion. com) is a Los Angeles-based commercial and fine art photographer. He owns and operates a photography studio in Culver City, California, where he photographs fashion, advertising, portrait and celebrity. During his 25 years of commercial and fine art photography, he has explored the worlds of autistic children, people with their pets, parent and child, tattooed people, bikers, identical twins, transvestites, “little people,” erotica and more. Ken teaches photography part-time at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

Instructor Ken Merfeld has taught “concepts” classes for years and will challenge how you see, what you shoot, what you do or don’t do with light, and where you are going with your photography. The class encompasses learning available light, portraiture on the streets, finding “poetry out of the ordinary”, interpretive thinking, strengthening your personality when shooting in public, and introducing your mind into the artistic equation while easing you into a new, more disciplined work ethic.

&

This course stresses the importance of developing a conscientious work ethic and challenging yourself on a regular basis to produce new bodies of work within specific periods of time. With 25 years of commercial and fine art photography experience, instructor Ken Merfeld will offer careful guidance for class participants as they develop an outline for creative organization, execution, and completion of their personal projects. Lighting and “technique” applied to subject matter is emphasized, analyzed, and fine-tuned. Print quality and presentation of work is also addressed. All students will choose and produce a personal portrait series with a minimum of six images. These projects will be discussed and critiqued during class, defining a course of action to continue and/or apply to other subject matter for future portfolio enhancement.

A R T

Every day your goal is to shoot at least one visually compelling image, a piece of art, per se, no matter where you are or what you are doing. Your daily art will be “found” (discovered) images, nothing set up or pre lit. You will develop a 24/7 “mind set” to discover interesting visuals incorporating emotional light, while raising your level of awareness on a daily basis. Assignments will be given to strengthen your point of view, sharpen your eye for discovery, and change the structure of how you photograph.

F I N E

In this workshop we will discuss all aspects of creating a poignant, meaningful portrait series, including the importance of communication skills, the psychology of dealing with people, design continuity of your work, and the element of trust within the artistic exchange. In working within the structure of a “theme related” body of work, an artist not only gains deeper insight into his or her subject matter but also learns more about him/herself as a producing artist.

Exploring Contemporary Fine Art Photography with Kathleen Laraia McLaughlin

Photographing in the Social Landscape with Thomas Alleman

The photographs of “natural landscapes” with which we’re most familiar—Ansel Adams’ pictures of Yosemite, perhaps, or those National Geographic series on icebergs or rainforests, in fantastic color—all show the world we would encounter if we could travel to those special, faraway places.

Contemporary Fine Art Photography is a process of transforming ideas into images, and images into objects. The photographer acts as a channel to which this progression can evolve. This six-week course will investigate this process and use of photography as a tool for individual expression—not just in terms of innovative composition and interesting camera techniques, but more importantly, as an exploration into the fundamental principles of contemporary visual art.

Our “social landscape”, on the other hand, is neither faraway nor unsullied, and it’s right outside your door. That social landscape includes taxicabs and telephone poles, beer signs, graffiti, political billboards, mom-and-pop corner shops and people, most of all. In the Social Landscape, people interact with one another and with the vast public spaces that surround and welcome them all - parks and boulevards and plazas—and they negotiate the more organized venues that they and others have chosen to share: stadiums, theatres, bars, clubs and buses. Signage guides participants and pedestrians in direct language, but it also shouts slogans and promises with cleverness and neon. The infrastructure of that built environment must be navigated: streets, bridges, walls, wires, and boxes.

We begin by examining the works of prominent photographers as well as other visual artists, thereby developing an aesthetic vocabulary and a working knowledge of visual syntax applicable to the study of both art history and popular culture. Guest speakers will be invited. We will also study classic and contemporary styles of fine art photography through a series of conceptual assignments, which will emphasize creative freedom and conceptual impact. Through weekly assignments, students will be encouraged to survey various different compositional and technical approaches to consider which would best exemplify the power of their own visual voice.

This class will explore the Social Landscape as other photographers have seen it over that last hundred years, and each student will learn more about their own responses to the Social Landscape, and the challenges they must overcome and embrace in order to communicate their experience in photographs that reveal, edify and engage.

At the end of the course students will possess a greater appreciation of photography as a fine art form and a deeper knowledge of their own artistic expression. Kathleen Laraia McLaughlin (www.klmphoto.com) is a mother, photographer, and educator with an appetite for exploring the world. She has received a Fulbright Senior Scholarship, an IREX IARO Grant (National Endowment for the Humanities), and a Houston Center for Photography Fellowship for her work in Romania. Her photographs have been exhibited both nationally and internationally and are in the permanent collections at the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, Western Virginia Museum of Art, and the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest. Kathleen received an MFA in Photography from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Thomas Alleman (www.allemanphoto.com) is a commercial, editorial and fine art photographer living and working in Los Angeles. During a 15-year newspaper career, Tom was a frequent winner of distinctions from the National Press Photographer’s Association, as well as being named California Newspaper Photographer of the Year in 1995 and Los Angeles Newspaper Photographer of the Year in 1996. The Wet Plate Collodion Workshop with Allan Barnes

Gum Bichromate over Platinum / Palladium with Digital Negatives with Joseph Rheaume

© Allan Barnes

© Joseph Rheaume

Immerse yourself in the elegant practice concerning gum bichromate washes applied over platinum/palladium prints. Platinum palladium and gum bichromate are two of the most revered of the alternative processes. The 19th century technique combining these processes has the effect of enhancing the print by slightly increasing the contrast as well as using color to build depth and chroma. The intrinsic qualities of the platinum/palladium print make a magnificent base for many of the tones that gum bichromate can afford in controlling color and contrast. Combining these two processes offers a palette with which truly unique prints can be made. In this two and one half-day workshop, you will learn the techniques and subtleties involved in making digital negatives, coating and exposing platinum / palladium prints, and preparing and coating gum washes over platinum / palladium prints.

All chemistry, media and cameras will be provided, in addition to information on purchasing one’s own WPC equipment. Please bring disposable latex or nitrile gloves, aprons and work clothing (materials used can easily stain skin and clothing).

This is an exciting and informative workshop. Whether you make photographs using 8×10 film, digital SLR cameras, or with your iPhone, this workshop will teach you to make beautiful platinum/palladium and gum over platinum prints.

Participants will use large format period-correct cameras to explore the craftsmanship of tintypes and ambrotypes. After a brief historical discussion of the process, students will be trained in the coating, exposure, development and preservation of the photographic plate. The goal is to provide a taste of how the process works, with each participant walking away with 3-4 plates. We will be making photographs at/around the location of the workshop. Participants are invited to bring their own props, old costumes, etc.

A LT E R N AT I V E

In efforts to advance photography in the mid-19th century, Fredrick Scott Archer, an English sculptor and photographer, experimented with collodion in the hope of producing a photographic negative on ordinary glass plates. The process was perfected in 1851. This twoday workshop serves as a hands-on introduction to this demanding but beautiful photographic process.

The Art of Travel Photography: How to Create Emotionally Compelling Travel Images with Lorne Resnick

The Nocturnal Landscape: Photographing the Mysteries of the Night with Peter Bennett

© Lorne Resnick

© Peter Bennett

This one-day workshop will examine how you approach your image making and the basic elements of a successful photograph. Split into three parts, the day begins with a presentation on creating emotionally compelling images. Additionally, Lorne will demonstrate his fine art workflow, including post-production in Photoshop and a three-minute “master printing” course. Part two focuses on portfolio reviews. Learning how to critically analyze work is an indispensable skill for a photographer to have. Discussion and Q&A finish the day.

Critical to successful night shooting is training the eye to see in an environment it is not used to photographing in, and learning what conditions will make for a successful photo and what will not. Utilizing tools and techniques such as long time exposures, balancing ambient light with artificial light sources, working with low and high ISOs and bracketing will be covered as well as post production techniques to bring your images to their full potential. This workshop is designed to help students get started exploring and photographing this extraordinary nocturnal landscape. The three Saturday night sessions in different Los Angeles locations and will be a time to explore, experiment and push the limits of the student’s work. The Monday classroom sessions will be for discussing the tools and equipment we will be utilizing, as well reviewing and critiquing the previous Saturdays work.

Topics will include the creative process, the travel story arc (what to shoot and how to shoot it), equipment selection, image processing, the current markets available for travel work (fine art, commercial, book publishers, websites), how to optimize travel shooting to take advantage of different markets, and more. Los Angeles based photographer, Lorne Resnick (www.lorneresnick. com) was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. His passion for travel and photography keeps him moving around the globe exploring different cultures and countries, capturing unique moments. His images have been exhibited in galleries across Europe and America, and have been used commercially for annual reports, billboards, television, web sites and for worldwide advertising campaigns. He currently has eleven fine art posters published of his travel photography. Lorne recently won the Travel Photographer of the Year award and now leads travel photography workshops around the world.

Peter Bennett (www.citizenoftheplanet.com) is the owner of Ambient images, a photo and stock agency specializing in New York, California and environmental images, and has been shooting commercially for over twenty-five years. He has survived by adapting to changing markets and constantly seeking out new and timely subjects to shoot. Join Wally Skalij, a working professional from the Los Angeles Times, as he discusses how to effectively photograph sports/motion. Early Saturday, the class will meet at LACP for a two-hour lecture and presentation. Wally will talk about his general photojournalistic style, as well as specific strategies as it pertains to photographing moments from sports.

This course teaches students how to create photography associated with a campaign for social change using portraiture as the primary vehicle for expression. We will discuss how to select a subject matter that one feels impassioned about and is relevant; how to develop the work with intellectual, emotional and artistic content; how to develop an advocacy campaign associated with the images; how to attract media attention; how to work with nonprofit organizations; how to exhibit the work; and how to raise funds for projects. A strategy will be created for each student. The class will conclude with the opportunity to participate in a portrait session and will share insight on how to connect with your subject on a deeper level.

Later in day brings real “on-the-job” training with students joining Wally at Santa Anita Horsetrack for live racing. Students will have the opportunity to work directly with Wally and learn how to capture striking images in real time. A Monday evening wrap-up session will provide an opportunity for critique and sharing of imagery.

Dana Gluckstein’s book, DIGNITY: In Honor of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and traveling photography exhibition DIGNITY: Tribes in Transition will be used as a case study of a highly effective human rights campaign. Gluckstein will discuss her experience at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January 2013, where she spoke on “improving the state of the world through the arts—shifting mind sets”. DIGNITY helped create the tipping point for President Obama to adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in December 2010.

A perfect opportunity for anybody interested in the field of sports photography or simply looking to obtain practical training as a photojournalist, the goal of the workshop is to provide students the skills and confidence necessary to take meaningful images that truly tell a story. The Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Angeles has named Wally Skalij “Photographer of the Year” six consecutive years. Working as a Los Angeles Times staff photographer for over ten years, covering world events from fashion in Paris to war in Iraq, has provided Wally the ability to adjust to any given situation. The Olympic Games in Beijing was Wally’s fourth Olympic Games coverage. Wally teaches workshops in photography and believes in giving back and helping students further their education.

Dana Gluckstein (www.danagluckstein.com) has photographed iconic figures including Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Desmond Tutu, and Muhammad Ali, as well as award-winning advertising campaigns for clients such as Apple and Toyota. Her portraits are held in the permanent collections of museums such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Her book, DIGNITY: In Honor of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the associated international museum exhibition, DIGNITY: Tribes in Transition, have received international acclaim and awards.

The Steps to Success with Sherrie Berger

The Business of Photography with Leigh Andersen

This class, designed for all levels of photographers seeking to advance their careers, provides the insights, tools and resources necessary to achieve a higher level of success. Student challenges will be addressed, both as a group and in one 20-minute private session per student (to be scheduled individually.)

This class is designed to help photographers understand the business and marketing end of the photo industry, an area often overlooked when a photographer is building his or her career. The course offers a great opportunity to learn what “you don’t know that you don’t know”, in other words how to create yourself (the photographer) as a brand, and how to effectively market that brand to clients appropriate to your work and skill level.

Divided among five in-class sessions, the course will analyze where the photographers’ careers are currently and where they are headed. (Class session #4 will be devoted entirely to private 20-minute sessions with each student, to be scheduled in-class.) We will set short and long-term goals, share practical resource materials, and connect with fellow photographers who might be at a similar point in their careers. As a class we will cover self-promotion and marketing tools and come up with a clear vision of what is necessary to accelerate one’s photography career.

The class will detail the main pillars of the commercial photo industry— Editorial (portraiture and celebrity portraiture), Syndication, Music (album packaging and publicity), Commercial Advertising, Entertainment Advertising and Fashion Advertising—and how to break in or move forward in each market. We will talk about marketing and branding strategies, including defining your strengths and style, the importance of creating a website that is both respectful of your vision and client-friendly, how to approach clients for meetings, how to craft a marketing plan, when and how to approach a rep, how to stay ahead of technology and client expectations and more. The class closes with Leigh reviewing your portfolio and/or website and suggesting specific ideas to better package your work.

Individually and as a group we will embark on website effectiveness, group portfolio reviews, and discuss mailers, contests, exhibitions, publishing and the business of the stock industry, editorial vs. advertising assignments, building relationships, client lists, and diversification and copyright/licensing. We will also explore networking via helpful professional organizations and online communities.

Originally from Nashville, Leigh Andersen has been working in the photo industry in Los Angeles since 1998. With over a decade of experience, Leigh has worked for celebrity syndication agency Icon International, and as an agent for both Montage and iCreate. While an agent at Montage she managed the careers of Nino Munoz, Art Streiber, Sheryl Nields, Rankin, Marc Baptiste, Warwick Saint, Brian Bowen Smith and Jim Wright, among others.

Sherrie Berger (www.sherrieberger.com) is a photography consultant, and a co-founder of Scarletworks (www.scarletworks.com) a photographer’s agency with a commitment to giving back. She has extensive experience in entertainment, high-end celebrity portraiture, fine art photography, production, marketing and public relations. Sherrie continues to consult with private clients on photography events, such as the Lucie Awards, on exhibitions, and with individual photographers. She conducts portfolio reviews at the Palm Springs Photo Festival and in New York during Photo Expo.

The Black and White Master Print with George DeWolfe

The Fine Art of Digital Printmaking with Eric Joseph

© George DeWolfe

© Eric Joseph

More than just a technical class on Photoshop and Lightroom, this course will emphasize the digital print as a unique art form in which the choice of inkjet paper to print on makes the difference between an ordinary photo and an extraordinary piece of artwork.

Instructor Eric Joseph will cover all of the technical jargon and vocabulary of inkjet papers and introduce you to the full range of inkjet media available on the market from standard Resin Coated Photograde papers up to handmade Japanese Washi papers. This course emphasizes the creative benefits of understanding and controlling your digital print results through hands-on printmaking sessions. Topics covered will include proper camera settings, color management, monitor and printer calibration, what type of printer to use and why, downloading and applying ICC profiles, preparing files for printing and everything else you ever wanted to know about digital printing. Eric will make sure the information is taught in an easily digestible and accessible format. Eric Joseph graduated from California State University, Northridge in 1985 with a BA degree in Art, Specializing in Photography. His advanced photography and primary mentoring instructor was Jerry McMillan an internationally respected photographer who was part of the ground breaking “Photography into Sculpture” exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1970. His career at Freestyle Photographic Supplies started in 1986 starting as sales person in the retail store working his way up to his current position as Senior Vice President of New Business and Product Development. As a respected industry insider Eric has established a solid reputation as a technical and creative resource in photographic processes, both darkroom and digital.

Lightroom 1: The Basics

Lightroom 2: Printing and Advanced Techniques with Rollence Patugan

This workshop focuses on the most essential workflow and developing features of the new Adobe Lightroom CC with the needs of the photographer in mind. Students will learn how to import, sort, organize and enhance their digital images, as well as batch process groups of images, quickly and efficiently.

In this workshop students will learn how to prepare and print their images on various paper types using high quality photographic inkjet printers. Camera bodies and lenses render slightly different color when an image is captured on the sensor. In order to get the most accurate colors out of RAW files, students will create custom camera profiles using the X-rite ColorChecker Passport. Vital to the printing process, monitor calibration will be demonstrated in order to ensure the display is representing precise color, brightness, and contrast.

In addition to the software’s new developing capabilities, participants will learn how to take advantage of Lightroom’s local adjustment tools for retouching and correction. Other processing utilities such as white balance, black and white conversion, sharpening, and noise reduction will be covered in this workshop. Further, the class will be instructed on how to export images in various formats such as JPEGs for emails and websites or high-resolution files such as DNGs, PSDs, and TIFFs. Lightroom also has a Book module where it’s possible to design and create a photo book that can be sent for publication directly from within the program. Finally, students will learn how easy it is to create a slideshow with an audio track, as well as web galleries without needing knowledge of HTML.

With the advancement of inkjet printing technology, there is now a wide selection of printing papers available. Each paper has its own characteristics and will produce colors and contrast differently. Students will learn how to create soft proof copies and adjust them accordingly to a specific paper’s ICC profile before sending the job to the printer. In some cases, students may need to outsource their images to a photo lab for printing, in which case they will go through the file preparation process specific to that particular lab. Advanced Lightroom topics such as exporting/importing Lightroom catalogs, shooting tethered, and the use of custom/3rd party development presets will also be covered in this course.

Street Portraiture for Teens (ages 12-18) with Todd Felderstein

© Todd Felderstein

“Street Portraiture” is an art style where the photographer capitalizes on the raw beauty of the unposed subject creating a natural, unencumbered photograph. Technically the photographer is forced to move from the shadows to directly engage the subject transitioning from a former candid creation to a deliberate portrait. In this one-week class, join filmmaker and photographer Todd Felderstein as together we will discover the secrets in “Street Portraiture” that will hone our storytelling skills, allowing us to better discover hidden gems and how to approach and engage random subjects without disrupting their environment. This class will further address composition, lighting, cameras and the psychology behind this style of shooting. We will create an assortment of portraits on a weekly basis while always challenging our comfort zone and creative eye. The course will conclude with a final project to be presented to the entire class.

Come to sunny California and study with the best!

Topics and assignments will include developing your story and/or concept, shooting on location and in studio, learning about lighting and setups, composing your shot and directing your subject. We will also discuss the importance of assembling a glam squad including casting the right model and the usefulness of props, wardrobe, hairstyling and makeup. This is a great opportunity to work in teams and by the end of the class students will have created their own mini fashion portfolio.

The weeklong class will consist of three days of lecture and critique and two days of shooting on the streets of Los Angeles. On Tuesday, we’ll arrange to meet at a specific location on Hollywood Blvd. and on Thursday, we’ll meet in the Downtown Fashion District. Topics covered include: the laws and ethics of shooting on the street, capturing the “decisive moment,” when to or when not to talk to someone, approaching people, how to tell a story with a single image, and how to be brave and not brazen. At the end of the week, we’ll put together a slideshow of all the students’ best work.

Choosing a meaningful topic is the first step of any personally driven photography project. Your subject could be exploring form, color, texture and shadows, or it could be the life of a family member or a part of your city. In this fun and collaborative class, students will learn the art of visual storytelling and the importance of the editing process. We’ll emphasize developing a special topic of focus and using your camera skills to bring that topic to life to produce a series of images that are stylistically and thematically unified. We’ll discuss in-camera composition and after-the-photograph analysis of what worked, and we’ll explore documentary versus more personal and artistic projects to develop each photographer’s personal vision and style. Come ready to have fun and explore a topic your curious about, in whatever visual form it comes.

Photography is the art of looking at the same world as everyone else, but challenging yourself to see something new. This class will consider pre-existing ideas about photographs and push students to think about using images to not just record reality, but to present it as a unique experience. Designed to take the advanced beginning photographer to the next level of expression, this course focuses on analyzing and practicing the basic technical capture of photographs and using cameras to interpret the world around them. The class will weigh technology and creativity equally and begin to solidify the students’ understanding of the histogram, deliberate exposure for output, understanding of depth of field and how to simplify or complicate subjects through its use, and how shutter speed can lengthen or compress the representation of time in a single photograph. Students will be given examples of how photographers have met these concerns in the past and conceptual projects will be assigned using the methods learned. In order to create a proven method for success, students will draw on their own personal interests and histories and will keep a visual journal of their progress to track their creative process.

The class will work together in a supportive and constructive environment, critiquing each other’s work on a daily basis. The goal is for each student to complete a cohesive, meaningful body of work. A digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera is recommended for this class; however, all types of cameras are welcome, including film cameras, point & shoot cameras and smart phones. After an extended trip to France and Spain, Gina Valona decided to turn her passion for photography from hobby to career. A graduate of the One-Year Professional Program at the Los Angeles Center of Photography, her work has been exhibited in galleries nationwide and recently published in Open to Interpretation: Love + Lust. In addition to her portrait work, Gina is currently working on a fine art series involving social issues dear to her heart. She lives in Los Angeles with her children and beloved pets.

Maia Anderson discovered her passion and natural talent for teaching while still in high school, when she worked for the National Conference for Community and Justice as a mentor and youth leader for teenagers and young adults. The years she dedicated to the nonprofit organization inspired her to pursue photography as a vehicle to explore issues of social diversity and communicate the commonality of the human experience. Maia attended San Francisco Art Institute and earned an MFA in Photography. While a student at SFAI, she continued to expand her teaching repertoire by tutoring undergraduate and graduate domestic and international students in English as a Second Language and photography. She currently advises and conducts portfolio reviews for international students applying to undergraduate and graduate art programs in the United States.
