Dear Friends, In the summer of 1994, I moved to Venice Beach without a job and very little money. I was a 39-year-old vagabond, with a dozen years of college teaching behind me, and a dream to make a difference. I had finally found my home after years of looking. Now I needed a job. I started teaching my own photo workshops in the 3,000 square-foot loft on Abbot Kinney that I shared with three young guys, a few random mice, and several make-shift walls. Eventually, I developed a following, which gave me the incentive to start my own school. The Julia Dean Photo Workshops (JDPW) opened its doors on January 1, 1999. Within months, I learned that as the one and only teacher, I couldn’t bring in enough revenue to pay all the bills, no matter how many hours I worked. I then invited my first guest, Joel Sartore, a National Geographic photographer and dear friend since 1982 when he took my photojournalism class at the University of Nebraska. Within the first two years of business came Bobbi Lane, Lee Varis, and Stephen Schafer, who have been loyal friends and teachers all these years. In the third year, I met Aline Smithson, who had signed up for a portfolio review class at JDPW where she showed beautiful black & white prints of her plastic camera work. I loved the work and asked her to teach a toy camera class, which she had never done before. She didn’t know then that she is a natural-born teacher, but she soon learned. Over the past 15 years, Aline has helped us build a thriving fine-art program and has guided many JDPW/LACP students on to great accomplishments. Now, our faculty has grown to 65 talented LA based photographers who are devoted to their students; people like, Thomas Michael Alleman, Peter Bennett, Ed Freeman, Ken Merfeld, Rebecca Truszkowski, and Ibarionex Perello. With Ibarionex’s help, we have built an exciting street shooting program at LACP over the past seven years. Check out pages 34 & 35 for next season’s street shooting classes. This year, we have implemented our newest program, our documentary program. Check out pages 32 & 33 for documentary classes taught by Sara Terry, Kevin Weinstein, and Mark Edward Harris. We are truly grateful for all of our instructors, those 65 who live in L.A. and all those other “special guests” who we bring in from afar. With their support, LACP continues to grow. Thanks to all. Does the very thought of photographing people leave you paralyzed with fear? Once you get up the nerve to talk to people do all your ideas seem to go out the window? Does your relationship to photographing people stop you from being the photographer you want to be?
These constructed scenes may tell stories, suggest dreams, or reveal inner landscapes. Time will also be spent photographing live models in the studio lighting bays, as we learn to shape the lighting to express moods and emotions. We will look at old and new photographic masters for inspiration, analyzing their composition, color, and lighting strategies. Finally, as we strive to grow in our role as emotional messengers, we will discuss and explore chosen methods and techniques, based on both current brain research and time tested artistic practice, that are designed to push us out of our comfort zones to higher levels of creative engagement.
Greg Miller’s unique teaching method works to connect your purpose with daily picture making while giving you the technical tools you need to make those photographs. Through in-class assignments, critiques and shooting demos, Greg guides students to find what is most important to them at this moment in time and discusses strategies for making pictures happen on a regular basis by overcoming common fears. Students will focus on portraiture and its context within historical and contemporary photography. We will begin by looking at student work as well as exploring the work of current and historical photographers. The class will embark on locations within or around Los Angeles Saturday afternoon and into the night and again early Sunday morning. In general, students are encouraged to photograph people wherever they find them: on the street, friends, models or family, but a portion of class will deal directly with the fear of talking to strangers. By exploring this aspect, students can strengthen their ability to communicate photographic intention.
The measurable goal of the workshop will be for each participant to produce one or two digital photographs of their constructed mini-dioramas, as well as a small selection of studio portraits, to be shared in our closing presentation. Richard Tuschman (http://www.richardtuschman.com) began experimenting with digital imaging in the early 1990s, developing a style that synthesized his interests in photography, painting and assemblage. He has been exhibited widely, both in the US and internationally. Accolades and awards include Prix de la Photographie Paris (Gold medal, People’s Choice), Critical Mass Top 50, International Kontinent Awards (1st Place, Fine Art Projects) and Center Project Launch Juror’s Award (chosen by Roger Watson, Fox Talbot Museum) among others. Richard is the recipient of a 2016 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Photography. He currently lives and works in New York City.
Greg Miller (http://gregmiller.com) was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1967. At the age of 19, he moved to New York to attend School of Visual Arts graduating with a BFA in Photography in 1990. In 2008, he received a Photography Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and his photography has appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, TIME, People, Fortune and LIFE. Greg teaches photography at the International Center of Photography in New York.

We will explore why artists choose animals as subjects, and what stories can be told through portrait, documentary and fine art photography. We will also address the practical challenges of photographing a subject with a mind of its own, how to avoid visual and emotional clichés, and the sometimes political issues associated with using animals as subjects. There will be location shoots, assignments, edits and group discussions as well as opportunities to get up close and personal with a charming cast of animals.
Participants will leave the workshop with a greater understanding and confidence in the direction of their own work, and not be hesitant to look for inspiration from other pertinent photographers and artists. Linda Connor is an internationally renowned photographer. She has taught at the San Francisco Art Institute since 1969 and studied under Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Connor’s photographs depict the relationship between the culturally sacred and natural world while illuminating her connection to, and deep respect for her subjects. Her work can be found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and many other notable institutions. She has authored several monographs including Visits, Solos, Luminance, Spiral Journey and Odyssey: the Photographs of Linda Connor. She is the recipient of numerous awards including National Endowment for the Arts grants and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
Traer Scott (http://www.traerscott.com) is an award-winning photographer and bestselling author of eight books including Shelter Dogs, Street Dogs and Nocturne; Creatures of the Night. Her work is exhibited around the world and has been featured in National Geographic, Life, Vogue, People, O, on the NY Times Lens Blog and dozens of other national and international print and online publications. Traer was the recipient of the 2010 Rhode Island State Council for the Arts Photography Fellowship Grant and the 2008 Helen Woodward Humane Award for animal welfare activism. We will be concentrating on developing an understanding of participants’ work and their photographic projects, strengthening their ability to communicate ideas visually. Creating profound and inspired images of the animals that we share our world with is a challenging yet deeply rewarding endeavor. This workshop is intended for photographers who want to make artful, evocative images of animals that reflect both the ethos of the photographer and the intelligence and individuality of the subject. The goal of the workshop is for students to learn and explore different aesthetic and philosophical approaches to photographing animals, while receiving instruction in technique, all in a passionate and supportive group setting.
This workshop focuses on helping participants recognize that they are producing work that is simultaneously unique to them and their times, but also part of a very long genealogy of expression. A single narrative portrait is a photograph that tells story as a moment in time. It has the ability to capture the magical moment of recognition between photographer and subject. It is a moment of clarity— sometimes an accident and sometimes a gift.
Join acclaimed photographer Susan Burnstine for a rich exploration of the self that focuses on exploring, realizing and defining personal narratives through the power of the still image. Using metaphor, symbolism and individual stories, participants will learn to articulate and refine their vision in any genre of the medium, whether that be landscapes, portraits, still life, nature, abstract, photojournalism, selfportrait or documentary.
In this workshop, join Amy Arbus for a weekend of photographing and examining the single narrative portrait. For practice, the workshop has been carefully planned for an inside look at the Day of the Dead festivities in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery (or on Olvera Street). The festivities will include costumed ritual dancers, musicians, decorated altars, contests and processions. Our mission is to create a powerful single narrative portrait that will mystify, provoke, amuse, enlighten or disturb. We will approach the single narrative as a template for a more complex photo essay made over time.
As photographers, our images are deeply rooted in personal emotion despite being self-created or found scenarios. The aim of this workshop is to guide photographers to become emotionally connected to each image they create, and to convey their vision in a meaningful, honest and consistent manner. Participants will explore their own personal narratives, aesthetics and psychology in image making. Through practical demonstrations, creative exercises, group discussions, shooting assignments and portfolio reviews, photographers will leave the workshop encouraged and inspired to reach the next level of their creative potential. Additional topics will include, long-term project development, techniques, editing portfolios, marketing, publishing and exhibitions.
The workshop encourages students to photograph people in an entirely new way, to develop a sense of movement and urgency in their photographs, and to capture the strange and complicated nature of being human. The class will explore the art of spontaneous portraits, photographing at night, reportage, and storytelling. Amy Arbus (http://www.amyarbus.com) has published five books, including the award winning On the Street 1980-1990, The Fourth Wall and The Inconvenience of Being Born. Her photographs have appeared in over one hundred periodicals around the world, including New York Magazine, People, Aperture and The New York Times Magazine. She teaches portraiture at Maine Media Workshops, The Fine Arts Work Center and the International Center of Photography. She has had thirty-six solo exhibitions worldwide, and her photographs are a part of the collection of The National Theater in Norway, The New York Public Library and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Susan Burnstine (http://susanburnstine.com) is an award-winning professional fine art and commercial photographer who builds homemade cameras and lenses using plastic, vintage camera parts, and random household objects. Susan is represented in galleries across the globe and widely published throughout the world. She teaches workshops across North America and is a regular portfolio reviewer at events across the country. Susan’s first monograph, Within Shadows, earned the Gold Award for PX3 Prix De La Photographie, Paris (Px3) in the Professional Fine Art Books category. She was also selected for Photo-Eye’s 2011 booklist. Her second monograph, Absence of Being, was published by Damiani Editore in Fall 2016 and has earned much critical praise.

Close your eyes and think about memorable photographs—images that made you take notice, perhaps even changed you. With today’s avalanche of new cameras and software releases, we can easily forget that people make photographs. Lasting images are created from a delightful and precious dance between what you see, and how you think and feel.
This workshop focuses on the most important skill in photography— seeing—and is therefore open to anyone with any camera. Students will walk away with the ability to see more of the world around them and learn how to translate abstract ideas into visual imagery.
Other topics will include: selection tools, masking, adjustment layers, layer groups, layer organization, blending modes, image transformation tools including Free Transform and Warp, Smart Objects that preserve flexibility and more.
Eddie Soloway (http://www.eddiesoloway.com) is a photographer, teacher, and storyteller committed to opening our eyes to the natural world. He has taught photography and creativity for leading photographic institutions and schools around the world. The Santa Fe Center for Photographic Arts (now CENTER) awarded Eddie the Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award, and recently Photo District News named Eddie one of America’s best photography workshop teachers. His book, One Thousand Moons, was published in 2004, the dvd, A Natural Eye Workshop, in 2009, A Natural Eye video series in 2015, and SEE THINK DO Photo Cards in 2017.
Fran Forman’s (http://www.franforman.com) photo montage constructions have been exhibited widely, both locally and internationally, and are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (Washington, DC), the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and many private collections. She is a Resident Scholar at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis, a recipient of several grants and Artist Residencies, and teaches digital collage at various colleges in Boston.

Join Eddie Soloway in a unique workshop experience designed to push your seeing from what is in front of your eyes into the world of abstractions, reflections, layers, movement, and then deeper into the realm of concepts and imagination. On Friday, Eddie will stir the pot of creativity with an evening of discovery and learning. On the weekend days that follow he will blend hands-on outdoor sessions with indoor presentations, bringing ideas into the concrete.
In this weekend workshop, we will use the tools of Photoshop to create composited images from our own found, taken, and scanned images. We will consider not only the technical issues but also what makes the image work as a piece of art. To create a sense of magic realism or the possibility of a new reality, we will practice making the disparate elements meld seamlessly. In doing so, we will consider masking, edge treatments, color space, shadows and highlights, texture, perspective, depth of field, harmony, symmetry, and of course composition and narrative, all in the service of creating a cohesive image.

Blurring the line between photography and painting, a composited photo can invite the viewer to enter into a world of magic or mystery, of whimsy or the unconscious. It asks us: what realities exist beyond the traditional limits of gravity, linear time, and social convention? Learn how to make powerful, memorable travel images, become more comfortable approaching and photographing people, and feel more confident navigating unfamiliar cultures. Join photographer world-renowned travel photographer Alison Wright in this unique workshop as she spends the weekend with students photographing ethnically diverse areas in and around Los Angeles.
This workshop is designed to help you discover or renew your creative spirit, and broaden the way you think about photography. Its purpose is to help serious amateur or professional photographers reconcile practical and creative lives, to re-examine your own creative process exploring the narrative, aesthetic, and emotional aspects of image making, and find new paths to creative growth. Our goal is to help each participant develop or refine a sense of personal style and to make serious amateur, fine-art, or commercial work more passionate and fulfilling.
Alison will discuss how to create a sense of place that includes paying careful attention to food, culture, people and the environment. Saturday afternoon will be spent photographing on location and will include people, markets, food, bar scene, sporting events and relevant cultural festivities. Participants will learn how to effectively capture the late afternoon/evening light for maximum impact. The day concludes with the class gathering for an authentic dinner in the surrounding area.
Keith Carter (http://www.keithcarterphotographs.com) is one of the most influential and renowned fine-art/editorial photographers working today. An internationally respected educator, workshop leader, and recipient of the Texas Medal of Arts, Keith holds the Endowed Walles Chair of Art at Lamar University in Texas, where he received the Regents’ Professor Award. He has published 14 books of his expressive images. His photographs are in numerous collections including the Getty Museum, Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Art Institute of Chicago, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
The workshop continues on Sunday morning, exploring and shooting in yet another diverse/eclectic area. Alison will reveal how shooting with a sense of passion and purpose propels her photographs beyond the ordinary. Basic Photography

In this beginning six-week workshop, students will learn all the controls and functions on their digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras, basic camera operation (including f-stop, shutter speed and ISO), fundamental concepts of photography, and how to control the photograph’s final look. Discussions include composition and light, how to get the background in or out of focus, how to stop or blur motion, why to use one ISO over another, when to use a tripod, and how to use the camera’s light meter to provide the best exposure. Other topics covered include using the appropriate lens for a desired effect (the difference between a prime lens and a zoom lens), how to hold the focus on a subject if changing camera positions (exploring auto focus modes and manual focus), and how to properly hold the camera.
In this sequential class to Basic Photography, students will get reinforcement in the concepts from the previous class and push toward the next level of photographic expression. Emphasis will be on image capture while practicing sound technical fundamentals. Using the camera to interpret the world around them, students will work toward mastering camera settings, metering techniques, and white balance selection for proper image capture. Over one week, participants will be given exercises to photograph the major genres of photography, including portraiture, landscape, still life, documentary, architecture, and finally shooting in blackand-white. Students will be given examples of how photographers have approached these genres, and conceptual projects will be assigned using the methods learned. Weekly critique and feedback will offer guidance for each student as they move toward mastering their camera.
Digital camera technology will be covered thoroughly, such as how to adjust the camera’s white balance, how to view and delete images, the difference between shooting RAW and JPEG, choosing the appropriate memory card, and how to transfer the image from the camera to a computer. The goal is to provide each participant with the technical information needed to operate his or her digital SLR camera properly and with the confidence and ability to shoot consistently in manual mode.
The idea behind this class is to have students learn how to use their digital camera with predictable and repeatable results while having fun in the process, and to begin to communicate through photography instead of just taking snapshots. Peter Bennett (http://www.citizenoftheplanet.com) has been a successful travel and environmental photographer for over 25 years. From 1998 to 2014 he owned and ran Ambient Images, a photo agency specializing in New York, California and environmental imagery. In 2015 he formed Citizen of the Planet, LLC, devoted exclusively to the distribution of his stories and work that focus on environmental subjects such as fracking, drought, green construction, alternative energies, urban farming and water and air quality issues. His books include: New York City: A Photographic Portrait, Our San Diego and Only in Los Angeles. His book on the Los Angeles River is due out next year.

Basic Digital Photography for Teens

This course for teens (ages 12-18) is designed to introduce students to the fundamental operations, techniques, and critical vocabulary of digital photography. Students will learn about the camera’s basic and advanced settings in an effort to make beautiful photographs, all while having fun. The class will cover technical information such as shutter speed and aperture, white balance, image quality, and compositional methods to help students develop their vision as budding photographers. Students will have the opportunity to practice their understanding of topics covered in lectures through daily photographic assignments. By the end of the course, students will be comfortable using the various controls of their specific cameras and will gain confidence in the way they approach different subjects photographically. This class is open to students who own either a digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera or a point & shoot camera with a manual setting. Maia Anderson discovered her passion and natural talent for teaching while still in high school, when she worked for the National Conference for Community and Justice as a mentor and youth leader for teenagers and young adults. The years she dedicated to the nonprofit organization inspired her to pursue photography as a vehicle to explore issues of social diversity and communicate the commonality of the human experience.

In this workshop we will discuss all aspects of creating a poignant, meaningful portrait series, including the importance of communication skills, the psychology of dealing with people, design continuity of your work, and the element of trust within the artistic exchange. In working within the structure of a “theme related” body of work, an artist not only gains deeper insight into his or her subject matter but also learns more about him/herself as a producing artist.
How dedicated are you to your craft? What percentage of each day do you spend shooting, dealing with, or thinking about photography? Do you walk the streets with your camera? Do you wish you could shoot every day? Now you can. The Daily Visual workshop is intended to motivate you to shoot every day, no matter what. Every day your goal is to shoot at least one visually compelling image, a piece of art, per se, no matter where you are or what you are doing. Your daily art will be “found” (discovered) images, nothing set up or pre lit. You will develop a 24/7 “mind set” to discover interesting visuals incorporating emotional light, while raising your level of awareness on a daily basis. Assignments will be given to strengthen your point of view, sharpen your eye for discovery, and change the structure of how you photograph.
This course stresses the importance of developing a conscientious work ethic and challenging yourself on a regular basis to produce new bodies of work within specific periods of time. With 25 years of commercial and fine art photography experience, instructor Ken Merfeld will offer careful guidance for class participants as they develop an outline for creative organization, execution, and completion of their personal projects. Lighting and “technique” applied to subject matter is emphasized, analyzed, and fine-tuned. Print quality and presentation of work is also addressed. All students will choose and produce a personal portrait series with a minimum of six images. These projects will be discussed and critiqued during class, defining a course of action to continue and/or apply to other subject matter for future portfolio enhancement.
Instructor Ken Merfeld has taught “concepts” classes for years and will challenge how you see, what you shoot, what you do or don’t do with light, and where you are going with your photography. The class encompasses learning available light, portraiture on the streets, finding “poetry out of the ordinary”, interpretive thinking, strengthening your personality when shooting in public, and introducing your mind into the artistic equation while easing you into a new, more disciplined work ethic.

He owns and operates a photography studio in Culver City, California, where he photographs fashion, advertising, portrait and celebrity. During his 25 years of commercial and fine art photography, he has explored the worlds of autistic children, people with their pets, parent and child, tattooed people, bikers, identical twins, transvestites, “little people,” erotica and more. Ken teaches photography part-time at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

This class instructs the emerging photographer on how to present work to the fine art and documentary markets. It also provides an insight into the world of photography and helps photographers package themselves and their work in a professional manner. Throughout the course new work will be encouraged and portfolios will be shaped and edited. Participants will learn how to build and write a résumé, how to construct a bio, and how to title and write personal statements about their work. Students will enter photography competitions, submit to publications and prepare work for exhibition. Information about grants, portfolio reviews and exhibition proposals are also covered. The work of a new and established fine art photographers are studied so that participants will understand what makes a successful series. Furthermore, guest photographers will be invited to share their journeys. Aline Smithson (http://www.alinesmithson.com) discovered the family Rolleiflex after a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working alongside the greats of fashion photography. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera. She has exhibited widely including and in 2012, received the Rising Star Award from the Griffin Museum for her writing and teaching. She also received Honorable Mention in Center’s 2012 Excellence in Teaching Award. Aline founded and writes the blogzine, Lenscratch, has written book reviews for photoeye, and has been curating and juroring exhibitions for a number of galleries and on-line magazines.

The Wet Plate Collodion Workshop with Allan Barnes
Variations in Platinum/Palladium Printing

Tap into your creative side in this hands-on workshop that explores one of the finest alternative process methods of photographic image making called Platinum/Palladium Printing. The workshop includes digital negative making and variations in Platinum/Palladium.
Participants will use large format period-correct cameras to explore the craftsmanship of tintypes and ambrotypes. After a brief historical discussion of the process, students will be trained in the coating, exposure, development and preservation of the photographic plate. The goal is to provide a taste of how the process works, with each participant walking away with 3-4 plates. We will be making photographs at/around the location of the workshop. Participants are invited to bring their own props, old costumes, etc.
Allan Barnes (http://www.allanbarnes.com) is a former photojournalist currently specializing in fashion and portraiture using antique photographic processes. His work has been exhibited widely in numerous locations and his client list includes the New York Times, Detroit Free Press, Spin and Metropolis Magazine. He holds a Master of Arts Degree in Photography from Ohio University and has taught photo classes at Santa Monica College, Citrus College and Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, MI. Allan has been teaching the Wet Plate Collodion class at LACP since December, 2007.

Joseph A. Rheaume (http://josephrheaume.wordpress.com) is a fine art photographer and educator from the western U.S. An active career in music gave way to his educational endeavors in 1996 when he began his studies at Arizona State University. By 2003 he had earned degrees in Engineering (BS) with an emphasis in Graphic Communications, Technology (MS) with an emphasis in Printing, and finally Fine Art (MFA) with an emphasis in Photography. Currently, Joseph holds the position of Program Coordinator for Digital Projects at the Center for Creative Photography (CCP) at the University of Arizona in Tucson where he manages the Digital Imaging operations for the CCP.
All chemistry, media and cameras will be provided, in addition to information on purchasing one’s own WPC equipment. Please bring disposable latex or nitrile gloves, aprons and work clothing (materials used can easily stain skin and clothing).

The printing technique will be covered in-depth, including some very interesting variations including Gum over Platinum / Palladium, Cyanotype over Platinum/Palladium, and Varnishing. Students will learn the techniques, gain the skills needed to make enlarged digital negatives from digital files, and coat the alternative process solutions onto fine art papers used for each process. Students will also gain valuable experience working with variations of this alternative photographic processes, as well as the skills required to create images on their own including enlarged digital negatives.

In efforts to advance photography in the mid-19th century, Fredrick Scott Archer, an English sculptor and photographer, experimented with collodion in the hope of producing a photographic negative on ordinary glass plates. The process was perfected in 1851. This twoday workshop serves as a hands-on introduction to this demanding but beautiful photographic process.

In this beginning six-week workshop, students will learn all the controls and functions on their digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras, basic camera operation (including f-stop, shutter speed and ISO), fundamental concepts of photography, and how to control the photograph’s final look. Discussions include composition and light, how to get the background in or out of focus, how to stop or blur motion, why to use one ISO over another, when to use a tripod, and how to use the camera’s light meter to provide the best exposure. Other topics covered include using the appropriate lens for a desired effect (the difference between a prime lens and a zoom lens), how to hold the focus on a subject if changing camera positions (exploring auto focus modes and manual focus), and how to properly hold the camera.

Michael has taught at community colleges, private colleges, online and one-on-one tutoring.
Digital camera technology will be covered thoroughly, such as how to adjust the camera’s white balance, how to view and delete images, the difference between shooting RAW and JPEG, choosing the appropriate memory card, and how to transfer the image from the camera to a computer. The goal is to provide each participant with the technical information needed to operate his or her digital SLR camera properly and with the confidence and ability to shoot consistently in manual mode.
Rebecca Truszkowski (http://www.rebeccatruszkowski.com) is an award- winning portrait and documentary photographer based in Los Angeles. In addition to her commercial work, Rebecca is developing a series of personal projects focusing on humanitarian issues, particularly community relations and women’s issues. She is a Michigan native and graduated with honors from the School of Photographic Arts an Sciences at The Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. In recent years, her interest has expanded to encompass teaching, including involvement with non-profit organizations and student exhibit development. Rebecca’s long-term goal is to make a significant contribution to arts education.
Students will work in both black-and-white and color while learning how to “see” in the chosen mode. Weekly assignments will be given followed by critiques during the next class session. In this sequential class to Basic Photography, students will get reinforcement in the concepts from the previous class and push toward the next level of photographic expression. Emphasis will be on image capture while practicing sound technical fundamentals. Using the camera to interpret the world around them, students will work toward mastering camera settings, metering techniques, and white balance selection for proper image capture. Over one week, participants will be given exercises to photograph the major genres of photography, including portraiture, landscape, still life, documentary, architecture, and finally shooting in blackand-white. Students will be given examples of how photographers have approached these genres, and conceptual projects will be assigned using the methods learned. Weekly critique and feedback will offer guidance for each student as they move toward mastering their camera.

The idea behind this class is to have students learn how to use their digital camera with predictable and repeatable results while having fun in the process, and to begin to communicate through photography instead of just taking snapshots. Rollence Patugan (http://www.rollence.com) is a commercial and fine art photographer who has been a recurring exhibitor for Month of Photography Los Angeles, Smashbox Studios, and City of Brea Art Gallery. He uses both digital and analog formats while taking advantage of today’s technologies by incorporating them into his photography. Rollence is a faculty member of the Santa Monica College Photography Department and is very happy to share his creative and technical skills to students at the Los Angeles Center of Photography.
Originally from Mexico, Zoe Aparicio (http://www.zphotographs. com) is a freelance photographer and photo-educator living in Los Angeles, California. His passion is fine art photography, and his body of work also encompasses portraiture and commercial photography. Much of his work focuses on a kind of visualization of ordinary events, representations that suggest situations in which the spaces and the characters together create a narrative. Prior to relocating to Los Angeles, Zoe taught photography for several years at the University of Guanajuato’s School of Visual Arts, where he honed his love of teaching. His work has been featured in exhibitions in cities throughout Mexico, as well as Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles.

In this workshop, students will learn how to use a flash unit in various lighting situations. First, we will go over all the buttons and dials on the flash. The day is then divided between lectures and demonstrations on different ways to use a flash. Shooting time follows each demonstration so students can put the information to use. The lecture begins with discussions on why and how to use a flash as the main source of light (meaning a low-light situation requiring use of a flash) and how to use a flash as a fill light (balancing ambient light with the light of a flash unit). We will also explore how to determine exposure, how to control the light output of a flash, ways to diffuse a flash, and how and why to include or exclude ambient light. Demonstrations will include using a flash in a direct or bounce mode.
If you feel confident with a camera but less so with a flash and would like to master portable lights, this class is for you. The goal of this six-week class is to learn how to use a flash so well that the outcome looks like beautiful ambient light. The technology today makes this easier than ever before. Students will work in various lighting situations, using the flash as both the main source of light and as a fill light. Each week, there will be lectures and demonstrations which include how to use a flash in both TTL and manual mode, on camera and off, how to determine exposure, how to control the light output of the flash, how to diffuse the flash, and how and why to include or exclude ambient light. Demonstrations using stands and umbrellas will be given showing bounce modes and multiple strobe use. Students will be given assignments each week to complete and bring in to the next class. This class is guaranteed to make you a master of your flash.
Though the day is spent mostly with the flash on camera, students will also learn how to improve the quality of light by using the flash off camera (in hand or by bracket). This is done with either a TTL cord or with wireless technology. Both will be demonstrated. We will also discuss how to “power down” the flash input for specific effects.
Please bring camera/lens, flash unit(s), manuals, memory cards, extra batteries (for camera and flash) and a jump drive (for transferring your images for critique). Please bring plenty of extra batteries for your flash units.
Students seeking to advance their portable flash skills are encouraged to take Mastering Your Flash where they will learn to improve the quality of the light by using flash off camera, with stands and umbrellas.

Mastering the skill of lighting on location takes planning in addition to technical savvy. Photographers must be capable of scouting an appropriate location, assessing how time of day will affect the outcome, and determining what quality of light will best facilitate the mood of the picture. Will it be a blend of ambient and artificial light, or does the strobe dominate? Do we use direct or indirect light, hard or diffuse light? How do we adapt to organic changes in the physical environment? This workshop is designed to help answer these questions.
Mastering the tools of lighting is the key to mastering studio photography. In this six-week workshop, students will gain a solid foundation of studio lighting and practical knowledge of light. Working hands-on with the equipment, participants will learn how to select the proper light source for their subjects whether shooting portraits, still life or product.

She specializes in commercial, fashion, and lifestyle portrait photography and is an adjunct photography professor at Santa Monica College. The class begins with a little tech talk on basic physics of light, practical understanding that directly applies to photography and be will put to use throughout the workshop. We will move on to discussing and working with subtleties of natural light and then the integration of artificial light. Students will discover how equipment choice can affect the mood of an image by experimenting with various light sources and modifiers such as bounces, diffusion material, umbrellas, soft boxes and grids. Basic as well as more complex lighting setups will be demonstrated and discussed. Emphasis will be placed upon utilizing the surrounding environment to the photographer’s advantage.

The class will start out with basic lighting setups and move into more detail with studio strobes, reflectors, fill flash, soft boxes, umbrellas, scrims, grids, snoots, flags, gobos and the use of light meters for better exposure. Students will learn about the quality, color and contrast of light to enhance their subject, and create dimension and depth. Each class will be a combination of lecture and handson time for each student to shoot using the equipment. Exercises will include photographing models, still life and product in order to develop a well-rounded knowledge of using studio strobes for various purposes. Students will leave the workshop with a practical and confident understanding of studio lighting and how to control it.

Portrait Studio Lighting: A One-Day Workshop with Kevin Scanlon

This one-day studio lighting course is designed as a basic introduction to lighting portraits in a controlled studio environment. In addition to learning technical use of equipment, participants will explore why great lighting, composition and styling are important elements in the creation of a successful portrait, as well as delving into other techniques that will help the photographer in connecting to the essence of the subject.
When the sun sets and the street lights slowly start to glow, a whole world of light, shadow, color and mystery awakens. When others pack up their gear and go home, the more adventurous know this a time to explore, to seek images that are not so evident, not so visible, but there to be captured and made into beautiful and dramatic photographs. Critical to successful night shooting is training the eye to see in an environment it is not used to photographing in, and learning what conditions will make for a successful photo and what will not. Utilizing tools and techniques such as long time exposures, balancing ambient light with artificial light sources, working with low and high ISOs and bracketing will be covered as well as post production techniques to bring your images to their full potential.
The day begins with a discussion and demonstration examining the details of light quality. What makes a light source soft versus hard, and which quality is appropriate for portraiture? There will be discussion on lighting for skin tones, eyes and hair and ways of dealing with those attributes. Participants will experiment with assignments throughout the day, learning how to create and manipulate a wide range of light qualities. Basic light modifiers, including soft boxes, umbrellas, beauty dishes, and grids will be employed, with the strengths and weaknesses of each being discussed. The role of light in a photograph to create mood, depth, dimension, and texture will also be examined. Examples of successful portraits by legendary and contemporary photographers will be analyzed, serving as a source of inspiration.
This workshop is designed to help students get started exploring and photographing this extraordinary nocturnal landscape. The three Saturday night sessions in different Los Angeles locations and will be a time to explore, experiment and push the limits of the student’s work. The Monday classroom sessions will be for discussing the tools and equipment we will be utilizing, as well reviewing and critiquing the previous Saturdays work.

In 2001, he quit his day-job in Arizona as a database administrator to become a professional photographer, before moving to Los Angeles in 2003. The first class session introduces students to shooting tethered, the process of photographing directly to a computer while working in the studio or on location and to shooting eCommerce imagery for on-line customers. The following class will focus on creating landing pages and banners to draw the customer into the site. Creating engaging product photography for accessories is next on the agenda. The class will end by creating a look book around a current fashion trend. A final review will tie all the elements together to give a solid basis for creating fashion imagery for eCommerce sites.

In this weekend-intensive lighting course we’ll dive right into discovering the nuances of light and how to apply them given the subject and environment. We’ll start in the studio with simple yet very effective lighting setups. On day two we’ll expand to being on location, mixing ambient light with strobe. Throughout both days we’ll discuss in-depth the artistic and technical sides of lighting. Students will be encouraged to experiment with the lighting in effort to discover their own personal style. We’ll have models throughout the weekend. Participants will be working in teams of two, directing and lighting a model to a complete image.

The photographs of “natural landscapes” with which we’re most familiar—Ansel Adams’ pictures of Yosemite, perhaps, or those National Geographic series on icebergs or rainforests, in fantastic color—all show the world we would encounter if we could travel to those special, faraway places. A pristine view, unsullied by man’s presence, is usually preferred, but sometimes we welcome a noble lighthouse or a picturesque old barn tucked into the corner of one of these images.
Contemporary fine art photography is a process of transforming ideas into images, and images into objects. The photographer acts as a channel to which this progression can evolve. This six-session course will investigate this process and use of photography as a tool for individual expression, not just in terms of innovative composition and interesting camera techniques, but more importantly, as an exploration into the fundamental principles of contemporary visual art.
Our “social landscape,” on the other hand, is neither faraway nor unsullied, and it’s right outside your door. That social landscape includes taxicabs and telephone poles, beer signs, graffiti, political billboards, mom-and-pop corner shops and people, most of all. In the Social Landscape, people interact with one another and with the vast public spaces that surround and welcome them all —parks and boulevards and plazas—and they negotiate the more organized venues that they and others have chosen to share: stadiums, theaters, bars, clubs and buses. Signage guides participants and pedestrians in direct language, but it also shouts slogans and promises with cleverness and neon. The infrastructure of that built environment must be navigated: streets, bridges, walls, wires, and boxes. Rules, codes and conventions are often unwritten, but they’re in the air for all to feel and follow, or not.
We begin by examining the works of prominent photographers as well as other visual artists, thereby developing an aesthetic vocabulary and a working knowledge of visual syntax applicable to the study of both art history and popular culture. Guest speakers will be invited. We will also study classic and contemporary styles of fine art photography through a series of conceptual assignments, which will emphasize creative freedom and conceptual impact. Through weekly assignments, students will be encouraged to survey various different compositional and technical approaches to consider which would best exemplify the power of their own visual voice. At the end of the course students will possess a greater appreciation of photography as a fine art form and a deeper knowledge of their own artistic expression. Thomas Alleman (http://www.allemanphoto.com) is a commercial, editorial and fine art photographer living and working in Los Angeles. During a 15-year newspaper career, Tom was a frequent winner of distinctions from the National Press Photographer’s Association, as well as being named California Newspaper Photographer of the Year in 1995 and Los Angeles Newspaper Photographer of the Year in 1996. As a magazine freelancer, his pictures have been published regularly in Time, People, Business Week, Barrons, Smithsonian, National Geographic Traveler, and US News & World Report, and have also appeared in Brandweek, Sunset, Harper’s and Travel Holiday.
Through lectures and discussions, exercises and assignments, this class will explore the Social Landscape as other photographers have seen it over that last hundred years. Students will learn more about their own responses to the Social Landscape and the challenges they must overcome and embrace in order to communicate their experience in photographs that reveal, edify and engage. Sara Terry (http://www.saraterry.com) is an award-winning documentary photographer and filmmaker best known for her work covering post-conflict stories. She is a 2012 Guggenheim Fellow in Photography, for her long-term project, “Forgiveness and Conflict: Lessons from Africa.” Her first long-term post-conflict body of work, “Aftermath: Bosnia’s Long Road to Peace,” led her to found The Aftermath Project in 2003 on the premise that “War is Only Half the Story.” An accomplished speaker on aftermath and visual literacy issues, her many lectures include a 2013 TedX talk and appearances at The Annenberg Space for Photography. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Portland (OR) Museum of Fine Art, the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, and in many private collections.
Hugh Kretschmer (http://www.hughkretschmer.net) received a BFA from Art Center College of Design and launched his career as a photo-illustrator in the editorial and advertising arenas. His fanciful yet provocative photographs balance between art and commerce, have brought him critical acclaim through numerous national and international awards, and have been the subject of many articles and industry blog posts. His work is now represented by Fathom Gallery in Los Angeles and Fotografenwerk, Dusseldorf. Hugh is currently an adjunct professor and part-time instructor at both Santa Monica College and UCLA.

The goal of the class is provide students a new workflow that cultivates developing concepts and planning creative work, laying the foundation to create a series of conceptual images.

This is a workshop about the emotional and sub-conscious content of photos and how to make photos that come from that place, helping you to truly define your own voice as a photographer. It is not a workshop about making “good” photos. It’s about setting aside technical know-how (and the obstacles that often come with that) and accessing intuitive, reflective ways of working that will lead you to make photos that only you can make.
What is the meaning behind your imagery? Can the viewer connect to your photograph in a conceptual way? Is it an emotional connection, or a clever idea, or does the viewer feel the “aha” experience when viewing your work? Do you share a narrative or tell a story with your work?

For a documentary photographer—for any photographer who is interested in making deep, emotional connections through their work—few things are more fulfilling than working on a long-term project. In building a body of work over an arc of time, and in creating and developing relationships with their subjects, photographers learn to develop narrative structure, to become immersed in creating a body of work, to explore nuance and metaphor, and to develop a critical eye as an editor.
Since its inception images have been used to educate people about our world and advocate for social change where injustice prevails. This class is about finding ways to create change locally in our society by shooting in an artful documentary way. At the same time, the class will demand each student learn and follow the ethics that go along with the profession of social documentary work. During this six-month course, participants will choose a social issue that they feel especially connected to in Los Angeles. The story can be a local, national or international issue but it must somehow be an accessible story to cover from Los Angeles. Possible issues may include global warming, homelessness, health, immigration, child labor, poverty, how gentrification affects those being pushed out of their own communities to name a few.
This workshop focuses on how to produce a long-term documentary project, giving participants the skills needed to create images that are stylistically and thematically unified. The class will explore documentary versus more personal or artistic projects, as well as how to convey a point of view, how to edit work, and how to establish a market. The class begins with a discussion on topic selection and the importance of writing a project proposal. During the monthly group sessions, student work will be critiqued, giving participants the opportunity to learn and study other photographers’ projects. The goal is to complete a substantial body of work over a six-month time frame.
Students will discover multiple ways to present their stories, such as through the eyes of one person or multiple people including family and friends. In addition, Kevin will guide the class on how to come up with a story idea, how to pitch and again access to non-profits and NGO’s, how do develop a subject’s trust, how to tell a compelling story through photographs, and how to ultimately publish the work to help bring about change.
Upon conclusion of the class students will be invited to partake in a slideshow presentation of their projects at the Los Angeles Center of Photography. The event will be publicized and open to the general public.
Throughout the class, Kevin will discuss working with non-profits and NGO’s, the importance of relationships, relief groups, publishing of books and fundraising for exhibits. Each student will be required to research and approach a organization(s) in the Los Angeles for his or her story. Photo Essay: The Picture-Driven Story with Mark Edward Harris

This hands-on course gives participants an in-depth look at both the creative methods and practical aspects for creating a photo essay. Students will develop skills to produce extended photographic narratives, exploring the process of producing sets of imagery that conveys a story or idea having little written narrative support. Photographs will be analyzed not only for their stand-alone creative content but also for their ability to introduce dynamic sequential transitions and conclude a picture story with maximum visual effect.
The word “candid” is derived from the word candidus, “The quality if being honest and telling the truth, pure, innocent, unbiased and free from malice and objective.”
Course topics will include defining a point of view, key images in a photo essay, learning how to edit one’s own work, photographic ethics and creative and technical support. Marketing photo essays and self-book publishing—completing the project—will also be discussed. Students will put lecture into action on the streets of Los Angeles, creating dynamic establishing shots, environmental portraits and detail shots as part of the overall photo essay. The goal of the course is provide the necessary knowledge, feedback and inspiration for each student to create a well-rounded picture story with multiple images. During this six-week class intended to teach the rules and ethics of photojournalism, students will be able to pick and choose which tools they would like to apply to their own work creating a custom way to approach weddings, parties, portrait sessions, lifestyle sessions, editorial campaigns, advertising work, documentary projects or even street photography. The genre, history and what photojournalists strive to accomplish with their work will also be explored. Discussions include such topics as how to approach people, how to capture the essence of the subject’s world, the ethics and responsibilities of photographing people, and how to overcome very difficult situations. Lectures include how to capture the right moments to tell a cohesive story, how to create compelling compositions, and which lenses to use to simplify backgrounds and/or to isolate your subject.

This six-month class is intended to teach students how to shoot candidly on the street, not only from practical experience, but also from studying historic and contemporary street photographers. We will meet once a month on Monday evenings, for lecture and critique, and once a month on Saturdays for a shooting session. (As a bonus, Julia also offers extra shooting dates each month, advocating the more you shoot, the better you will get.)
Street Shooting 2 is meant for serious shooters who want to continue shooting together and looking at each others’ work. Not only will we continue to shoot on the streets, but we will also shoot specific events such as the Day of the Dead festivities on Olvera Street and at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery Chinese New Year, the May Day Parade, and/or the Gay Pride Parade. In this class, you will not only improve your street photography through continual practice, but you will also learn how to tell a story—with a beginning, middle and end—while shooting events.
Topics covered in class include: how to see light, how to find great backgrounds, the laws and ethics of shooting on the street, how to shoot candidly, how to capture the “decisive moment,” how to anticipate the future, how to approach people, how to shoot from the hip, equipment choices, lens selection, seeing in 3D, seeing in black & white, how to tell a story with a single image, and how to be brave, but careful.
Other topics covered include: • What is Documentary photography; Social documentary photography; Street photography; Photojournalism? • What is a picture story versus a documentary project? • How to tell a story when shooting an event such as a parade, a wedding or a birthday party
Many of the shooting sessions will take place downtown where Julia resides and spends most of her time shooting. We will shoot on Broadway, the Toy District, the Fashion District, the Flower District, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, the Arts District, on Olvera St., and in Union Station. If it rains, we’ll ride the Metro for a few hours. We’ll also shoot on the Venice Beach Boardwalk and on Hollywood Blvd.

The LA Street Shooters’ Collective with Julia Dean

The LA Street Shooter’s Collective picks up where Street Shooting 2 left off, continuing the camaraderie of shooting together on the street, sharing our work, and getting feedback from each other. The course has been created specifically for those who have taken both Street Shooting 1 and Street Shooting 2 and includes four shooting sessions and four classroom sessions over five months.
This intensive two-day course on street photography is designed for intermediate and experienced photographers. Using his decades of experience of photographing the streets, Ibarionex will walk students through the process of seeing and capturing great photographs while exploring the city. These skills will help each photographer develop his or her personal approach for street and travel photography. The course will feature lectures, critiques and plenty of hands-on time photographing in the streets of Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles. The course will also cover: • Core camera features and controls for quality photographs • Developing an awareness of light and shadow • Tips and techniques for creating clean and strong composition • Increase familiarity with a variety of street photography images • Becoming comfortable with photographing strangers • Culling and editing photographs using Adobe Lightroom • Increased understanding of how to evaluate photographs Please bring five images (saved as JPEG) of your best work to the first class session. For the past 15 years, Julia has concentrated on street photography around the world. For the past five years, street shooting in downtown Los Angeles has been her primary focus. In 2014, one of her L.A. street photos—The Kiss—won for the United States in an international street shooting contest. The same photograph won first place in Leica’s I-Shot-It street shooting contest in 2015.
Ibarionex Perello is a photographer, writer and educator. When the sun sets and the street lights slowly start to glow, a whole world of light, shadow, color and mystery awakens. When others pack up their gear and go home, the more adventurous know this a time to explore, to seek images that are not so evident, not so visible, but there to be captured and made into beautiful and dramatic photographs.
Learn the concepts and techniques to consistently create powerful and compelling travel images. Whether you enjoy shooting wildlife, landscape, people or any other kind of travel photography, instructor Lorne Resnick will explain what goes into making great pictures— from a complete digital workflow solution to finding and shaping your personal artistic voice.
Critical to successful night shooting is training the eye to see in an environment it is not used to photographing in, and learning what conditions will make for a successful photo and what will not. Utilizing tools and techniques such as long time exposures, balancing ambient light with artificial light sources, working with low and high ISOs and bracketing will be covered as well as post production techniques to bring your images to their full potential.
This one-day workshop will examine how you approach your image making and the basic elements of a successful photograph. Split into three parts, the day begins with a presentation on creating emotionally compelling images. Additionally, Lorne will demonstrate his fine art workflow, including post-production in Photoshop and a three-minute “master printing” course. Part two focuses on portfolio reviews. Learning how to critically analyze work is an indispensable skill for a photographer to have. Discussion and Q&A finish the day.
This workshop is designed to help students get started exploring and photographing this extraordinary nocturnal landscape. The three Saturday night sessions in different Los Angeles locations and will be a time to explore, experiment and push the limits of the student’s work. The Monday classroom sessions will be for discussing the tools and equipment we will be utilizing, as well reviewing and critiquing the previous Saturdays work.
Topics will include the creative process, the travel story arc (what to shoot and how to shoot it), equipment selection, image processing, the current markets available for travel work (fine art, commercial, book publishers, websites), how to optimize travel shooting to take advantage of different markets, and more. Los Angeles based photographer, Lorne Resnick (http://www.lorne resnick.com) was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. His passion for travel and photography keeps him moving around the globe exploring different cultures and countries, capturing unique moments. His images have been exhibited in galleries across Europe and America, and have been used commercially for annual reports, billboards, television, web sites and for worldwide advertising campaigns. He currently has eleven fine art posters published of his travel photography. Lorne recently won the Travel Photographer of the Year award and now leads travel photography workshops around the world.

The human form is beautiful to work with photographically. Lighting is one of the most important elements to consider in the creation of a nude image. Chiaroscuro in art is an Italian term that literally means ‘light-dark’. In paintings the description often refers to tonal variations which are used to suggest the volume and modeling of the subjects depicted. This type of lighting lends itself well to the nude due to the lost and found quality is has.
During this one-day intensive workshop, Michael Sanville, a headshot photographer with 20 years of experience, will share his knowledge of the industry, including how he has photographed literally tens of thousands of actors and continues to do so. Students will learn the proper tools it takes to begin a career as a headshot photographer including: • How to find your style. • How to find makeup artists that are not only professional but reliable. • How to decide between flash and natural light and why some prefer one over the other. • How to make an effective and inexpensive marketing plan to build your business. • The do’s and don’t of working with actors and how to relate to them one on one.
Ann Elliott Cutting (http://www.cutting.com) is an award-winning editorial, conceptual advertising and fine art photographer. Ann’s images have appeared on the covers of Time, USNWR, Washington Post, Kiplinger, Science and on many album covers and book covers. Her client list includes Nike, Nikon, Lexus, Target, Lee, Pioneer, Kenwood, and Ashworth Golf. Ann received a BA in Biochemistry and cell biology from UCSD and a BA in photography from Art Center College of Design where she is currently on the faculty.
This class will prepare students to deliver a top quality headshot that will get the actor noticed, and more importantly, in the door of agents managers and casting directors alike. Michael Sanville (http://www.michaelsanville.com) began as an actor at the age of five. He was chosen to study with Sanford Meisner on the island of Bequia and continued to work with Mr. Meisner at the Playhouse West. Michael would trade his stage and on-camera experience to work behind the camera, eventually becoming one of the top headshot photographers in the industry. Literally tens of thousands of actors have sat in front of Michael’s lens. In this one-day workshop we will concentrate on using chiaroscuro lighting while working with nude models on location in a beautiful modern home. Participants will photograph the nude in a variety of locations, experimenting with lighting and directing poses. This workshop focuses on the most essential workflow and developing features of the new Adobe Lightroom CC with the needs of the photographer in mind. Students will learn how to import, sort, organize and enhance their digital images, as well as batch process groups of images, quickly and efficiently.
In this sequential course to Lightroom 1: The Basics, students will be given assignments to photograph that will then be used in class to reinforce and work toward mastering the adjustment tools that were introduced in the previous course. New concepts and topics that will be covered include importing a catalog to an existing master catalog, book and web modules, custom white balance and the creation of custom camera profiles for color accuracy. (The purchase of X-Rite’s ColorChecker Passport will be required.) Further, participants will have the opportunity to explore the digital printing process, learn how various papers will affect a photograph, and create high quality and fine-art prints using the print module.
In addition to the software’s new developing capabilities, participants will learn how to take advantage of Lightroom’s local adjustment tools for retouching and correction. Other processing utilities such as white balance, black and white conversion, sharpening, and noise reduction will be covered in this workshop. Further, the class will be instructed on how to export images in various formats such as JPEGs for emails and websites or high-resolution files such as DNGs, PSDs, and TIFFs. Lightroom also has a Book module where it’s possible to design and create a photo book that can be sent for publication directly from within the program. Finally, students will learn how easy it is to create a slideshow with an audio track, as well as web galleries without needing knowledge of HTML.
The goal of the course is to enable students to confidently and consistently process their RAW images for various outputs. Rollence Patugan (http://www.rollence.com) is a commercial and fine art photographer who has been a recurring exhibitor for Month of Photography Los Angeles, Smashbox Studios, and City of Brea Art Gallery. He uses both digital and analog formats while taking advantage of today’s technologies by incorporating them into his photography. Rollence is a faculty member of the Santa Monica College Photography Department and is very happy to share his creative and technical skills to students at the Los Angeles Center of Photography.

The morning will be spent understanding students’ publishing objectives and how that translates to a marketing plan. This will include discussing the basic elements of a marketing plan; what is being published and sold, who might purchase it, where to sell it, how to price it and how and when to promote it. Issues to be discussed include; how soon to start working on a plan, book economics and buyers price points, buy or create a mailing list, selling self-published books, and do’s and don’ts of using social media and web sites. During the workshop, there will be a series of breakout sessions to enable development of each person’s specific marketing plan for their book.

After a morning of studying limited edition artists’ books, trade books and zines, the remainder of the first session will be spent understanding students’ publishing objectives and how that translates to a book object. This will include time discussing the elements of book design and the purpose of a book-dummy, concluding with a hands-on fabrication of a saddle-stitch dummy book/zine. The second session will start with a demo of a Japanese stab-binding dummy book and the business elements of (self) publishing a book. The remainder of the day students will work as teams on the development of a dummy book as a collaborative project.

This new course, co-taught by photo consultant Bonny Taylor and photographer Kevin Weinstein, guides and instructs students in the “artist development process.” Students will refine an existing body of work for an exhibition, portfolio, or a book.
This class is designed to help photographers understand the business and marketing end of the photo industry, an area often overlooked when a photographer is building his or her career. The course offers a great opportunity to learn what “you don’t know that you don’t know”, in other words how to create yourself (the photographer) as a brand, and how to effectively market that brand to clients appropriate to your work and skill level.
Upon conclusion of this course, each student will have a clear path about how to proceed with an edit and a clear checklist/direction to put his/her project into action. This class is good for mid-career artists looking for gallery representation and/or serious high-school students seeking to gain admittance into art schools.
Originally from Nashville, Leigh Andersen has been working in the photo industry in Los Angeles since 1998. With over a decade of experience, Leigh has worked for celebrity syndication agency Icon International, and as an agent for both Montage and iCreate. While an agent at Montage she managed the careers of Nino Munoz, Art Streiber, Sheryl Nields, Rankin, Marc Baptiste, Warwick Saint, Brian Bowen Smith and Jim Wright, among others.
Based in Los Angeles since 1996, Bonny Taylor has worked for over a decade with renowned artists. She has consulted projects ranging from individual artist development to fine art print advisement and also provides curatorial and exhibition services to emerging and established artists. Bonny serves on the founding team of Focus LA, an international photography competition for photographers who show their work at photo l.a. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York and is currently the Director of The Fine Art Print Studio at Film Solutions in Burbank.

Keep your modeling movement and posing skills sharp this new, one-day class designed for lifestyle/commercial models, actors and dancers seeking how to maximize their photogenic capabilities. Enjoy a fun, safe place to come and hone your craft, stay polished between gigs, and discover paid opportunities to build and revitalize your portfolio at the Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP).
Just like lifestyle and commercial models, fashion/beauty models often are the most important part of a photograph yet have the least amount of input as to how a photograph is created. The class will cover how to prepare for shoots, client expectations, photographer expectations, professional attitude, model releases, hair, make-up and wardrobe, TFP, and most importantly how to think, breathe and move. Gabriella will demonstrate basic movements in front of the lens—effective face, arm, shoulder, hand, leg, and feet placements— and how to smoothly transition from one pose to another without looking posed and stiff. She will also discuss the terminology that photographers often use and insight into what photographers and clients are normally thinking.
Lifestyle and commercial modeling requires the most varied range of looks and age range of models and can be one of the most lucrative areas of the modeling business. Although often the most important part of a photograph, lifestyle and commercial models have the least amount of input as to how a photograph is created. International print and commercial model Gabriella Muttone will reveal what’s in your power and control and how to work on-set so that clients and photographers will want to work with you again and again. Gabriella will demonstrate basic lifestyle moves and poses with effective face, arm, shoulder, hand, leg, and feet placements, and how to smoothly transition from one pose to another without looking posed and stiff. She will also discuss in detail the difference between lifestyle/commercial modeling compared to fashion/beauty modeling.
This workshop has been developed with the aspiring fashion/beauty model in mind and for all professionally working fashion/beauty models, 16 years old and up. (Models under the age of 18 must have parental consent.) Models who complete this workshop and the lifestyle/ commercial modeling workshop with receive a LACP modeling certification. The certification provides models the opportunity to have their own modeling page on the LACP website and to join LACP’s model casting service for paid bookings with award-winning photographers.
The four-hour workshop will also cover how to stay fresh and inspired in front of the lens with simple, reliable poses and movement techniques that will impress. Learn how to make subtle yet powerful movement changes so that photographers cannot get enough of your poses, and discover what to think about, and more importantly what not to think about, when in front of the lens.
Gabriella Muttone is an international print and commercial model, fine art/portrait photographer and model coach based in Los Angeles. Born in Canada, she began her modeling career at 17 in Toronto where she got discovered for her first national commercial for the Toronto Star. Since then she has landed other major commercial campaigns for Faberge Shampoo, WonderBra, Coke, Diet 7-up and American Express, to name a few.

A natural storyteller with a knack for bringing out the personalities of his subjects, David Zentz (http://www.davidzentz.com) began his career working as a photojournalist for newspapers including the Chicago Tribune, the St. Petersburg Times and the Associated Press. Since 2008 he has worked as an independent editorial and commercial photographer, regularly shooting portraits and stories for some of the top publications and companies in the world. Some of David’s recent editorial credits include Smithsonian Magazine, National Parks Magazine, Newsweek, Outside, The Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times. David also donates his time and imagery to a number of organizations including the Young Photographers Alliance, Venice Family Clinic, Venice Arts, the Mirror/Mirror Project and Flashes of Hope. He is an advocate for the photo industry, serving on the national board of directors of the American Society of Media Photographers following four years as the Los Angeles chapter president. David lives in Venice Beach, Los Angeles with his wife.

In this sequential class to Basic Digital Photography for Teens, students will receive reinforcement in the concepts from the previous class and push toward the next level of photographic expression. Emphasis will be on image capture while practicing sound technical fundamentals. Students will work toward mastering camera settings, metering techniques, and white balance selection for proper image capture, while engaging in more creative and thought provoking assignments.
This week-long course for teens (ages 12-18) is designed to introduce students to the fundamental operations, techniques, and critical vocabulary of the two standard photographic imaging softwares: Adobe Lightroom & Adobe Photoshop. Students will learn about the basics of digital workflow, processing of images, and developing creative photographs in a digital world. The class will cover technical information such as cataloging, color balance, develop module, adjustment brush, camera raw processing, layer masks, compositing, retouching and more! Students will have the opportunity to practice their understanding of topics covered in lectures through daily lab assignments in conjunction with taking short trips outside to create original imagery. This course will be taught in LACP’s digital lab, equipped with ten 27" iMac computers. Some students will have their own workstation while other may need to share. Each computer is loaded with the latest versions of Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC. Bamboo Pen & Touch digital tablets will be available if needed. His practice investigates the medium of photography as it relates to issues of site, consent, and economic exchange. He received his B.F.A. from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and his M.F.A. from the University of California, Irvine. He has previously taught at UCLA Extension and FIDM. He now serves as adjunct faculty at El Camino, Fullerton and Santa Ana College.
Jasmine Lord (http://www.jasminelord.com) is a Los Angelesbased photographer who shoots runway and backstage for fashion weeks in North America as well as working on documentaries, commercials and live events. Jasmine has shot two books for the Eat Naked nutrition brand and has photographed for AFI, high-end restaurants, food catering services, locals artists and designers in Los Angeles. She is an associate member of the Society of Camera Operators and an active member of the Australian Cinematographers Society.

Over five days, participants will be given exercises to photograph some of the major genres of photography, including but not limited to: stylized portraiture, architecture, black and white, and the art of telling a story in a single frame. Los Angeles is a massive, sprawling metropolis housing neighborhoods and communities of all shapes and sizes. There are remote woodsy enclaves, suburban tree-lined neighborhoods and concrete laden areas. In this class, students will take advantage of this melting pot of environments and turn their cameras on their neighborhoods in an effort to document their communities.
In this class, students will learn the fundamentals and techniques of documentary-style photography by photographing an independent documentary project that combines writing and images. Through presentations of work by significant historic and contemporary photographers, in-class and take-home shooting assignments, lectures and critiques, students will build the ability to not only enhance their shooting skills, but also see the world differently. Students will become more aware of light, fleeting moments and emotions, and learn the skills to capture it all while expressing a visual narrative through their subjects.
On Monday, students will meet at LACP to talk about what urban landscape means, go over general camera information and discuss various photo techniques. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, students will meet in predetermined locations to practice capturing the essence of Los Angeles’ diverse landscapes. Students will complete shooting assignments outside of class in an effort to build a strong body of work that best tells the visual story of the urban landscape in which they reside. Class time will be devoted to reviewing and critiquing students images. Time will also be devoted to examining the work of various acclaimed photographers and images they made in the cities they call home.
Each student will choose a story that is personally meaningful to him or her. Throughout the process, the importance of storytelling through imagery will be emphasized. On the final class session, students will present their documentary projects to the class. Parents are encouraged to attend this session. Kat Bawden (http://www.katbawden.com) is a documentary and editorial photographer and teacher living in Los Angeles. She explores complex human stories through beautiful images, often combined with writing, video, and audio. Her work has appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The Huffington Post, Scalawag Magazine, and Fotografia Magazine, among numerous other publications. She has also produced visual content for a number of nonprofit, creative, and commercial clients. She teaches photography workshops that engage students in the craft of image-making and visual storytelling. She first learned photography in high school and studied documentary arts at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Before pursuing photography as a career, she worked as a community organizer and English teacher.
The class will culminate with each student presenting his or her project. The selfie is a recent phenomenon, but self-portraits have been around since the origin of art. Photographic self-portraiture has deep and beautiful roots, despite some newly distorted ideas about what it means to turn the camera on yourself.
“Street Portraiture” is an art style where the photographer capitalizes on the raw beauty of the unposed subject creating a natural, unencumbered photograph. Technically the photographer is forced to move from the shadows to directly engage the subject transitioning from a former candid creation to a deliberate portrait.
Todd Felderstein (http://www.toddfelderstein.com) is a narrative and documentary filmmaker and photographer who continues to amass global recognition and accolades through his multi-hyphenated storytelling career. Erin Davis (http://www.erinmariephotography.com) is a freelance photographer specializing in travel and documentary photography, with years of experience shooting events and portraits. She started her career in the visual arts as a cinematographer and filmmaker, releasing numerous festival favorites and starting her own video and editing business. Erin’s work has been featured in several shows such as Viva La Muxer and Save Art: Picture the City. Currently she is preparing for an interactive exhibit at Gravy Studios in Philadelphia, where she is working with a local musician to create original tracks to accompany her photos.

In this class, we will explore the important differences between a selfie and the art of self-portraits, which requires more vision, technique, and consideration. We will talk about why a photographer, who is normally behind the camera, would want to take a photo of himself or herself in the first place. Fun group exercises and activities will encourage each student to explore their identities, and together we will create a safe creative space for self-expression. Each class will include a variety of basic photography instruction and lots of hands on practice. Some of our shooting exercises will include environmental and studio-lit portraits, utilizing reflection and shadow, and the thoughtful inclusion of props, makeup, wardrobe, and more.
In this one-week class, join filmmaker and photographer Todd Felderstein as together we will discover the secrets in “Street Portraiture” that will hone our storytelling skills, allowing us to better discover hidden gems and how to approach and engage random subjects without disrupting their environment. This class will further address composition, lighting, cameras and the psychology behind this style of shooting. We will create an assortment of portraits on a weekly basis while always challenging our comfort zone and creative eye. A great portrait can come in many forms. It can be a close-up shot of a smiling face or a wide shot of a person sitting in a room. It can even be a shot of a person’s hands or an object that’s important to them. A moving portrait is shaped not only by the photographer’s choices in framing, lighting and composition, but also depends on the subject’s story, personality and how the photographer interacts with his or her subjects. This class will teach students the many considerations a photographer must take when creating a visually stimulating photograph, from selecting the subject and the setting to the technical details that can change mood and message.
This class is intended to teach students how to shoot candidly on the street, not only from practical experience, but also from studying historic and contemporary street photographers. The weeklong class will consist of three days of lecture and critique and two days of shooting on the streets of Los Angeles. On Tuesday, we’ll arrange to meet at a specific location on Hollywood Blvd. and on Thursday, we’ll meet in the Downtown Fashion District. Topics covered include: the laws and ethics of shooting on the street, capturing the “decisive moment,” when to or when not to talk to someone, approaching people, how to tell a story with a single image, and how to be brave and not brazen. At the end of the week, we’ll put together a slideshow of all the students’ best work.
This weeklong class teaches students how to take different approaches to portraiture and how those decisions affect what the image says to the viewer. Students will get a first-hand experience, both as the subject and the photographer, to learn how to determine the best way to tell their subject’s story. Using studio strobes and natural light, they will then learn what it takes to translate their vision into a final image. From planning to set-up to execution, this hands-on experience will teach students the broad objectives and the finer details in creating a thought-provoking, engaging portrait.
On Tuesday and Thursday, students should be prepared to meet on location and provide their own transportation. Students should also wear comfortable shoes and expect to walk up to 2-3 miles per day. Julia Dean (http://www.juliadean.com) is a photographer, educator, and founder of the Los Angeles Center of Photography, formerly The Julia Dean Photo Workshops. She began her career as an apprentice to pioneering photographer Berenice Abbott. Later, Julia was a photo editor for the Associated Press in New York. She has traveled to more than 40 countries while freelancing for numerous relief groups and magazines. Her extensive teaching experience includes 33 years at various colleges, universities and educational institutions including the University of Nebraska, Los Angeles Valley College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Santa Monica College, the Santa Fe Workshops, the Maine Photographic Workshops, Oxford University and the Los Angeles Center of Photography.
Students will have the chance to study and discuss published portraits by famous photographers, learning how to identify differences in composition, lighting, subjects’ expressions, and what makes the photographs successful. This five-day class is a continuation of Street Shooting 1 for Teens, enabling more shooting time. In Street Shooting 1, students learn the ethics and laws of shooting on the street. They learn how to be safe and how to shoot candidly. The history of street photography is also covered in Street Shooting 1.
We love photography and we love fashion! Explore the world of fashion photography with photographer Gina Valona as she takes students through the process of shooting vintage fashion and current trends. Surveying some of the fashion industries most iconic photographers from classics like Avedon to contemporary duos like JUCO, students will be exposed to a variety of styles and players in the world of fashion photography. Topics and assignments will include developing your story and/or concept, shooting on location and in studio, learning about lighting and setups, composing your shot and directing your subject. We will also discuss the importance of assembling a glam squad including casting the right model and the usefulness of props, wardrobe, hairstyling and makeup. This is a great opportunity to work in teams and by the end of the class students will have created their own mini fashion portfolio.

After an extended trip to France and Spain, Gina Valona decided to turn her passion for photography from hobby to career. A graduate of the One-Year Professional Program at the Los Angeles Center of Photography, her work has been exhibited in galleries nationwide and recently published in Open to Interpretation: Love + Lust. Students will photograph each other in this fun and energetic workshop. All lighting equipment will be provided, but students should have a digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera or film camera capable of manual exposure settings and a hot shoe or sync connection.

Street Shooting 2 allows three more days of shooting on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The class can vote on where to shoot among Chinatown, Union Station, Olvera Street, Toy District, Broadway, Fashion District, Arts District, Venice Beach, Santa Monica Pier, Hollywood Blvd., or Beverly Hills. Monday will be spent in the classroom discussing what makes a good picture and planning the week. Friday will be spent looking at all the students’ best work. Students should have three different memory cards, one for each shooting day. At the end of each of the shooting days, students will hand over their memory cards to the instructor who will then select the best shots each day for Friday’s critique. (Bring extra memory cards and batteries to each shoot.)

A $75 administrative fee will be charged on all refund requests arriving 31 days or greater before the workshop start date. If the request arrives 15-30 days prior to the workshop start date, 75 percent of the applicable workshop fee will be retained. No refunds are provided for requests arriving 0-14 days prior to the workshop start date. All refund requests must be submitted in writing via email to info@lacphoto.org.

If a student wishes to receive credit for a Special Guest workshop, he or she must do so greater than one month prior to the workshop start date. Within one month of the workshop start date, the option of receiving credit does not apply and students must adhere to the Special Guest Refund Policy.
Payment
Travel Workshop Deposit, Payment and Refund Policy
Payment is due in full at the time of enrollment.
The deposit, payment and refund policies for travel workshops to domestic and international locations will vary. Please visit the specific travel workshop website link found online at www.lacphoto.org or contact the Los Angeles Center of Photography at 323-464-0909 or email info@ lacphoto.org.

Receipt of Payment For all online enrollments a receipt of payment will be generated and sent automatically to the student’s email account. For all phone, fax, mail or in-person enrollments, a receipt of payment will be generated and sent to the student’s email account within 24 hours of receiving payment. About one week prior to the class start date each student will receive a separate “Details” email that will include a welcome letter from the instructor, parking information, and what to bring to class.
Parking For evening classes, we recommend parking at street meters (free after 8 pm). Sunset Blvd. offers a great place to find parking meters after 7 pm. OR, you may also park in the yellow commercial loading zones for free after 6 pm. There is also plenty of free street parking two blocks south of us near Wilcox and Fountain.
Refund Policy
If you do not wish to find metered or street parking, there are many parking structures to choose from. The closest and most economical lot is a surface lot, located just one block north of us at 1637 Wilcox Ave. next to the US Post Office. The cost is $7 flat (varies on the weekends).
A $25 administrative fee will be charged on all refund requests*. The request must arrive greater than one week prior to the class start date. No refunds will be provided for requests arriving one week or less prior to the class start date. All refund requests must be submitted in writing via email to info@lacphoto.org.

Credits
Studio and Gallery Rental
Credit vouchers may not be redeemed for refunds or cash back. Further, credit vouchers may not be applied toward travel workshops or private lessons. A student’s decision to receive credit in lieu of a refund is final and may not be changed at a future date. Students may elect to transfer applicable class fees toward the purchase of another class or workshop, limit of one transfer per class. All transfer requests must adhere to the refund policy noted above and/or in conjunction with Special Guest Workshop Refund Policy and Travel Workshop Refund Policy noted below.
The Los Angeles Center of Photography’s space may be rented for studio shoots and/or art gallery exhibitions. The space measures a total of 2,200 sq. ft. with a ceiling height of approximately 16 ft. Beautiful track lighting is mounted along the facility’s three separate spaces. Six surface walls painted flat white allow for up to 50 images to be displayed (not stacked). The space is equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, sound and digital projection capability. A wired hanging system allows for seamless and easy installation of artworks.
