The Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP) is dedicated to supporting photographers and the photographic arts. LACP provides high-caliber classes, local and travel workshops, exhibitions, screenings, lectures, and community outreach efforts, including grants, need-based scholarships, and focused programming for youth and low-income families.
Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends, The Los Angeles Center of Photography became a 501c3 non–profit in August of 2014. At times, people ask, “Why did you go non–profit after 14 years as The Julia Dean Photo Workshops?” Our humorous response is that we’ve been non-profit all along, so decided to make it official. Our serious response is that we want to do even more for the community and being a non-profit enables us to raise the extra money needed to meet our goals. Those goals include everything we offer now, such as a multitude of classes, guest speakers, book signings, exhibit openings, contests, and portfolio reviews. We are also adding a scholarship program for our classes for those in need, as well as grants to photographers to help them with their work. By becoming nonprofit, we have also reached out to schools and non-profits working on behalf of underserved children and teens. We need your help in reaching these many goals. You can help by becoming a Member at LACP! There are many privileges received by being a Member, but the Rewards are even greater. Your membership builds on an already thriving photo community. It allows us to offer a mentoring program to at-risk kids through the non-profit, Spark. Your membership allows us to implement a one-year photo program in Boys & Girls Clubs in Los Angeles County. Becoming a Member is the Reward. Please support LACP so that we can support many. Thank you. Sincerely,
Julia Dean, Executive Director P.S. “Thank You” to all of you who are already Members!

Turning Ideas into Pictures with Cig Harvey
T r a v e l 2 016
© Cig Harvey
In this fun and creative workshop, students will learn how to enhance their current portfolio or begin a new project by discovering fresh ways of creating unique and singular work. Friday evening will be spent discussing what is a portfolio and how to begin a new body of work or continue a deeper exploration of a current one. Saturday continues with an exploration of the creative process involving lots of writing and brainstorming in visual source books to see what concerns/ideas we are drawn to. We will discuss the threads that unite images to make a portfolio and most importantly, how to turn ideas into pictures—making the unseen seen through use of metaphor and symbol and the formal concerns of light and frame. Students then will go out and shoot in the beautiful light of late afternoon, evening and night.
Cuba
With Manuello Paganelli
We will continue the creative process on Sunday while each student works privately in a short one-on-one session with Cig to discuss their edits and ideas. Students will then present the start of their new projects to the group for feedback and discussion. Cig Harvey‘s (www.cigharvey.com) photographs and books have been exhibited widely and are in the permanent collections of major museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the International Museum of Photography, George Eastman House, Rochester, NY. She was a recent finalist for the prestigious BMW Prize at Paris Photo and had her first solo museum show at The Stenersen Museum, Oslo, Norway. Cig is a full-time Assistant Professor of Photography at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. She is known for her high energy, creative teaching style and brings a profound sense of optimism to all that she does. Making Pictures with Thomas Allen
Flash in LA! On-Location and In-Studio with Joe McNally
© Joe McNally
Today, anyone with a smart phone, tablet or digital camera can take pictures. This workshop is all about the art of making them!
Join Joe McNally for a complete weekend of flash photography. After Friday evening’s orientation session, students will spend Saturday learning lighting on location. There will be demonstration using small flash techniques, as well as a light shapers and the appropriate choice of light shapers. The idea of blending light, making flash appear natural in the midst of an ambient condition, using color and white balance, and exposure ratios to create portraits is the theme of the day.
Following introductions, we’ll spend Friday evening viewing a selection of constructed photographs by artists, students and previous workshop participants for inspiration. Afterward, we’ll dig deep into a veritable mountain of old, discarded books to unearth interesting characters and objects, paying close attention to how they might interact with one another. Armed with an X-acto knife (and plenty of blades), the next day we’ll learn how to carefully and meticulously remove each element from its background. Sunday is when the real fun begins. We’ll toss our disparate collection of cutouts onto the table and begin piecing them together into meaningful storylines. During the process, we’ll discuss what it takes to tell a good, visual story. Thomas will show you the art of staging straight photographs with tape, glue, pins and wire. Once everything is ready to go, we’ll move on to composition, the most crucial step in creating a strong, visual narrative. From there, it’s just a matter of fussing with the arrangement until you are ready to capture your brilliantly-crafted tableau with the device of your choosing—be it a camera, phone or tablet.
On Sunday we will review and critique of the previous day’s efforts. Then, flash in the studio! Teams will rotate with different gear and multiple flash units to achieve different looks to their lighting. By the end of the weekend, participants will feel much more comfortable and versatile in their use of flash on-location and in-studio, both in situations that demand control, and in situations out on the street that are more off the cuff and improvisational.
Thomas Allen (www.thomasallenonline.com) is a full-time artist and award-winning illustrator. He earned a BFA from Wayne State University (Detroit) and an MFA from the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis). Allen is represented by FOLEY (New York) and G. Gibson Gallery (Seattle). His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts—Houston, The Milwaukee Art Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Target Corporation, Fidelity Investments, Microsoft, the Progressive Corporation and Twitter.
Joe McNally (www.joemcnally.com) is an internationally acclaimed photographer whose career has spanned 30 years and included assignments in over 60 countries. He has been at various times in his career a contract photographer for Sports Illustrated, a staff photographer at LIFE, and, currently, an ongoing 25-year contributor to the National Geographic. Joe was listed by American Photo as one of the 100 Most Important People in Photography and described by the magazine as “perhaps the most versatile photojournalist working today”.

This new two-day workshop will allow you to share your work in an intimate session and learn about the many new ways you can create photographs, tell visual stories, work with mobile photography and social media, and develop a personal style and approach for greater satisfaction. Designed for amateurs and professionals alike, the class will help you grow and develop your work to a new level, including exploring options for publication online or in books, exhibitions and websites.

Join photographer Greg Gorman in this hands-on, weekend workshop as he shares his portrait lighting techniques both in the studio and on location. Greg will discuss how he approaches people and how he analyzes a face, as well as his use of different camera angles, lens choices and background choices to create good images. He will also discuss and demonstrate how he works in natural light with reflectors, scrims and artificial light. Students will have time to shoot, putting Greg’s techniques and their own into practice, followed by group critiques. Some Photoshop and processing will also be covered as it relates to portrait photography, but emphasis will be placed on the original capture.
There will be an emphasis on helping students develop their personal vision and unique styles. As with most of Ed Kashi’s work, the ultimate goal is to find a subject you are passionate about and document it in a compelling and unique visual. We will look at photographs, multimedia and short films to consider the range of opportunities out there at the moment.
Greg Gorman’s (www.gormanphotography.com)) work documents that peculiar obsession of the 20th century celebrity. Each shot, a testament to the individual character, gives a picture of human nature in its infinite range. “For me a photograph is most successful when it doesn’t answer all the questions,” says Gorman, “and it leaves something to be desired.” For over three decades, Greg Gorman has continued to master the art of photography. From personality portraits and advertising campaigns to magazine layouts and fine art work, Greg has developed and showcased a discriminating and unique style in his profession.
Students will have two days of shooting and review sessions, plus a group critique of each student’s portfolio/essays during the workshop. On the second full day, the group will shoot for half a day and then return to the classroom to present their work and engage in discussions on composition, editing and narrative development. Ed Kashi (www.edkashi.com) is a photojournalist, filmmaker and educator dedicated to documenting the social and political issues that define our times. As a member of VII Photo Agency, Kashi has been recognized for his complex imagery and its compelling rendering of the human condition. Photographing with Purpose with Greg Miller
Hollywood Lighting in the Hurrell Style with Bobbi Lane & Lee Varis
© Greg Miller
© Bobbi Lane
Join the dynamic duo of Bobbi Lane and Lee Varis to explore the world of Hollywood glamour, and learn the photographic style of George Hurrell. Bobbi & Lee will teach you how to achieve the look of the classic Hollywood glamour images of the 1930’s & 40’s using modern lighting tools and digital retouching techniques.
Students will focus on portraiture and its context within historical and contemporary photography. We will begin by looking at student work as well as exploring the work of current and historical photographers. The class will embark on locations within or around Los Angeles Saturday afternoon and into the night and again early Sunday morning. In general, students are encouraged to photograph people wherever they find them: on the street, friends, models or family, but a portion of class will deal directly with the fear of talking to strangers.
Bobbi Lane (www.bobbilane.com) is an award-winning commercial photographer specializing in creative portraits on location and in the studio. Bobbi’s multi-faceted approach to photography incorporates over 35 years of technical experience with innovative artistic interpretation. She teaches at LACP, ICP, Santa Fe, Maine Media, and the Center of Photography in Woodstock. Photo District News named Bobbi one of 13 of the Top Workshop Instructors.
Students will share their images from the weekend on Sunday afternoon, collectively editing down one another’s images into a final body of work. This weekend-intensive workshop can serve as a launching point for a new project or solidify your already established one. Greg Miller (www.gregmiller.com) was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1967. At the age of 19, he moved to New York to attend School of Visual Arts graduating with a BFA in Photography in 1990. The Staged Poetic Image with Richard Tuschman
Digital Infrared with Nevada Wier
© Richard Tuschman
© Nevada Wier
As fine art photographers, how do we develop, strengthen, and maintain our ability to conceive and craft constructed compositions with compelling emotional resonance? Whether assembling objects for a still life, constructing digital montages, or directing and shooting an ensemble of actors, together in this workshop we will uncover and explore the practical tools and long-term strategies necessary to achieve success on our quest to becoming more effective emotional messengers.
Infrared photography is a way of creating images using the invisible infrared light that strikes your subject. Long-time infrared experimenter Nevada Wier calls it “invisible poetry,” because in the process of studying this technique, you move beyond your usual methods of photographing and discover a new way of seeing the world. Infrared is not only ideal for creating unusual, surreal landscapes, but it’s also startling for portrait and still life photography. Infrared photography in the digital age is light years ahead of its film counterpart. Two factors have led to this unique niche becoming more accessible: first, the use of digital cameras that have been converted to render infrared light and, second, new digital workflow protocols.
Over the course of the weekend, we will look at lots of photographs by poetic visual storytelling masters, both past and present. Learning by example, we will analyze their choices for lighting, composition, themes, and subject matter. We will discuss and explore specific techniques, based on both current brain research and time tested artistic practice, for generating ideas, and put into practice the aesthetic principles required for molding those ideas into dynamic visual statements. The goal of the workshop will be for each participant to plan a small cohesive suite of staged or constructed images, presented Sunday afternoon in the form of rough digital sketches.
In this weekend workshop, Nevada introduces you to digital infrared photography. Using converted cameras and Adobe software, you will learn the ins and outs of photographing and processing your images. After getting comfortable with the technique, you move into the creative and experimental side of making images with the infrared spectrum. By the end of this short workshop you are a maven of invisible light and a maker of photographic poetry!
By the end of the workshop, students will have gained a practical approach to creating a personal series of staged poetic photographs, and the tangible foundation for a longer-term project.
Nevada Wier (www.nevadawier.com) is a multiple award-winning photographer specializing in documenting the remote corners and cultures of the world. She is recognized for her creative and intimate approach to people and she has a passion for Infrared Photography. She has been published in numerous national and international publications, including: National Geographic, Geo, National Geographic Traveler, Islands, Outdoor Photographer, Outside, and Smithsonian. Getty, Corbis, and National Geographic Images represent her stock photography. Her fine-art prints are featured in numerous and public and private collections. Nevada is a well-known keynote speaker and workshop and seminar instructor. She is a Fellow of The Explorer’s Club and a member of the Women’s Geographic Society.
Richard Tuschman (www.richardtuschman.com) began experimenting with digital imaging in the early 1990’s, developing a style that synthesized his interests in photography, painting and assemblage. His work has been exhibited internationally and recognized by, among others, Photo District News, Critical Mass Top Fifty, American Photography, Prix de la Photographie, Paris, LensCulture Exposure Awards, and the International Photography Awards. The Los Angeles River Photo Adventure with Peter Bennett
Death Valley National Park with Michael E. Gordon
© Michael E. Gordon
One of the most exciting places to be these days in Los Angeles is the LA River. The river has long been an iconic landscape in the City of Los Angeles, internationally known as a backdrop for movies like Terminator 2 and Grease. It is also where the city’s origins began as the first settlers made their home along its banks. For many years, the river itself was the primary source of water for the growing city. Today, the LA River is experiencing a rebirth and rejuvenation, a transformative time in its history as it so slowly but surely returns to its natural state.
Death Valley National Park is a desert wonderland of immense scale, beauty and power. Its 3.3 million acres, the vast majority of which are roadless wilderness, encompass a staggering array of landscapes, unique geologic formations and colorful vistas. The largest National Park in the contiguous United States, Death Valley is both beautiful to behold and rich in history, mood and mystique. Its towering sand dunes, seasonally snow-capped mountains, warm springs and vast empty valleys offer endless opportunity for exploration and ample subject matter for the creative artist. There’s no place on Earth quite like it.
Photographer Peter Bennett (www.lariverpix.com) has been documenting the river’s 51-mile journey to the sea since 2008, photographing beautiful landscapes, majestic historic bridges, captivating still-life’s and exciting glimpses of the river’s wildlife and many recreational activities. Join Peter as he takes you along an incredible, picturesque ten-hour river adventure, designed specifically for photographers. Peter’s intimate knowledge of the river and its history allows him to assist fellow photographers in finding unique and undiscovered places to shoot, all while providing technical help and great fellowship.
Internationally acclaimed landscape photographer Michael E. Gordon has carefully selected some of the park’s most photogenic locations for this workshop, where outstanding photographic opportunities will be joined with inspirational, creative, and technical discussions. Michael works individually with his students to address their technical and compositional challenges, and on Sunday he’ll lead a review/ critique session of student images made during the workshop. This will be an intensive adventure! Expect pre-dawn starts, late finishes, outstanding locations, and great fun and camaraderie. Michael E. Gordon (www.michael-gordon.com) is an award-winning fine art landscape photographer of unusual and overlooked natural landscapes of California and beyond. A lifelong student of nature and wilderness, Michael’s intimate relationship with the landscape yields photographs of great depth and clarity. He is best known for his black and white ‘Desert’ series which, says Broughton Quarterly, portrays “stunning ethereal beauty from terrain where others see only a bleak landscape.” Awards and recognition include International Photography Awards, Prix de la Photographie, Paris, and Black & White Spider Awards. Michael is represented by art galleries in the U.S and Europe and his fine art prints are held internationally in private collections.
Peter Bennett (www.greenstockphotos.com) is the owner of Ambient images, a photo and stock agency specializing in New York, California and environmental images, and has been shooting commercially for over twenty-five years. Crash Flash 1: On-Camera Flash with Julia Dean
Crash Flash 2: Off-Camera Flash with Julia Dean
© Gerhard Clausing

In this workshop, students will learn how to use a flash unit in various lighting situations. First, we will go over all the buttons and dials on the flash. The day is then divided between lectures and demonstrations on different ways to use a flash. Shooting time follows each demonstration so students can put the information to use. The lecture begins with discussions on why and how to use a flash as the main source of light (meaning a low-light situation requiring use of a flash) and how to use a flash as a fill light (balancing ambient light with the light of a flash unit). We will also explore how to determine exposure, how to control the light output of a flash, ways to diffuse a flash, and how and why to include or exclude ambient light. Demonstrations will include using a flash in a direct or bounce mode.
This class is for students who have taken Crash Flash 1: On Camera Flash and want to learn how to light more beautifully by getting the flash off camera. Julia will demonstrate how to use a single flash or multiple flashes off camera to achieve a beautiful “quality” of light. We will use light stands, umbrellas, and gels—in the studio and on location, in both the TTL mode and in manual mode with wireless technology. There will be a four-hour shoot in the afternoon with models to put all the techniques into play. At the end of the day, a critique will take place to view students’ work. Please bring camera, flash(es), memory cards, extra batteries (for camera and flash), jump drive (for transferring your images for critique), light stand, bracket (that goes between the light stand and the flash—make sure it has a slot for an umbrella), umbrella (medium size), wireless transmitters. Please bring plenty of extra batteries for your flash units.
Though the day is spent mostly with the flash on camera, students will also learn how to improve the quality of light by using the flash off camera (in hand or by bracket). This is done with either a TTL cord or with wireless technology. Both will be demonstrated. We will also discuss how to “power down” the flash input for specific effects.
NOTE: Do not be concerned if you don’t have the money to purchase or rent all of the above. We have some equipment at LACP. You’ll be working in groups, so we’ll make sure each group has all the equipment necessary.
Students seeking to advance their portable flash skills are encouraged to take Crash Flash 2: Off-Camera Flash where they will learn to improve the quality of the light by using flash off camera, with stands and umbrellas.

Every camera manual tells you how to use a camera but none show you how to use light—the single most important element in photography. This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of lighting, allowing you to pre-visualize light and empowering you to light anything, anytime, anywhere.
© Kevin Scanlon
Magazine images come in all shapes and sizes. Kevin Scanlon, a freelance portrait photographer, will cover many aspects of what it takes to be a successful magazine shooter and what comes with the territory. From newsworthy, everyday people to the most powerful of celebrities, learn what to expect when that assignment becomes reality.
How do we use softboxes, grids, snoots, umbrellas or the light of a window or skylight to make our photos compelling? Why does open shade make some portraits wonderful and others terrible? In this one-day technical workshop we’ll focus the lights on diverse subjects to match them with their perfect light modifier. After the lecture, you’ll set up lighting experiments and have the opportunity to build the lighting on our subjects in hands-on shooting demos.
Scanlon will take you from beginning to end, covering topics such as how to compile a list of photo editors, the basics of marketing to magazines, the right questions to ask when an assignment is issued, executing a photo shoot (including preparation, portrait basics, lighting, and shooting environments), basics in post-production with digital capture, and image delivery. Also included will be one of the most important aspects of being a successful magazine photographer—troubleshooting! This weekend course will provide you with the fundamental skills necessary to take the next step in becoming a successful magazine photographer.
Starting with a dark studio, we’ll begin with a single light and progress to a complicated five-light set. We’ll photograph a model to examine qualities of light like color balance and CRI and then we’ll take a complicated subject and manipulate highlights and shadows with gels, flags, reflectors and polarizers. Learn to pre-visualize diverse light sources as you move the lights, trigger the camera and see the changes on your tablet or smartphone live via WiFi.
Kevin Scanlon (www.kevinscanlon.com) is an award-winning freelance portrait photographer. In 2001, he quit his day-job in Arizona as a database administrator to become a professional photographer, before moving to Los Angeles in 2003. His clients include LA Weekly, New York Times, Darko Entertainment, Merck, and Warner Brothers Records. His early work consisted of music photography, and his images appeared on Weezer t-shirts and Jimmy Eat World album artwork. More recently, portraiture for editorial and advertising has been his concentration.
Applicable to beginning and intermediate photographers alike, whether you’re thinking of taking your flash off the hot shoe or want to buy your first lighting kit, this class will help you understand strobe equipment and master lighting inside and outside the studio. Bring your sense of humor, and a smartphone or tablet to upload samples, take notes, and to capture your own behind-the-scenes photos.

Just explains and demonstrates his method of working—a significant part of which has to do with interpersonal connections: finding and approaching a subject, helping a subject overcome shyness and fears, and establishing trust and rapport. He will also discuss the importance of understanding why you as a photographer are drawn to certain human characteristics and why this is crucial to the creation of engaging portraiture. Lectures will consist of examining other important photographers and their body of work, as well as overcoming technical challenges when photographing portraits in natural light. Further, Just will work individually with each participant to asses their strengths and progression.
The Monday evening session provides an opportunity for critique and discussion. The goal off this class is to introduce students to the ability of lighting portraits using only natural light and achieving great results.
Just Loomis (www.justloomis.com) is a portrait and fine art photographer working in Los Angeles and Berlin. A graduate of Art Center College, he began his career in Milan, Italy in 1983 with Carla Sozzani at Vogue Sposa. He is a longtime assistant and friend of Helmut and June Newton. The class begins with a lecture explaining the theory of light including highlights, shadows and the balance of latitude of high to low (functional range of light). Participants will be instructed on how to make light work for them, including exposing for skin tone, exposing for the environment, proper metering techniques and more. After lunch, the class will move on location to a practical shooting session with models. Using the surrounding environment to their advantage, students will learn how to read their subject’s light, the correct way of mixing light temperatures, and how to establish mood and dramatic lighting.
&
In this four-session workshop, explore the workings, both creative and technical, behind producing the intimate portrait in natural light. Instructor Just Loomis guides students in looking closely at the relationship between photographer and subject, with the goal of creating a series of emotionally resonant images while exploring important natural light technical issues.
L I G H T I N G
In this workshop, students will discover ways to find and utilize beautiful ambient light as a powerful photographic tool. Participants will be amazed as to how they can achieve great results simply by finding incredible backdrops, such as Disney Concert Hall. Emphasis will be placed on using available and natural light and simple reflectors, with no use of artificial light and heavy strobe equipment.

This nine-month class is Los Angeles Center of Photography’s’ “master” class. It is designed for serious photographers who are interested in creating a significant personal project. Students will work toward creating a strong, cohesive body of work that will culminate in an exhibit at LACP for a month-long run.
Designed for students who have completed The Next Step 1 in or prior to 2015, this four-session class continues to instruct the emerging photographer on how to present work to the fine art and documentary markets. Photographers are encouraged to build on their bodies of work and come prepared to fine-tune, edit, and enhance their series or images. The class will explore competitions, grants, presentation and packaging, marketing, and other venues for presenting work. Submissions to competitions and portfolio reviews will be encouraged and guest speakers, if available, will share their work.
After presenting project ideas in the first class, the ensuing five class sessions will be spent critiquing on-going work thoroughly. We will analyze approach, quality, and progress of the projects. Students will be encouraged to research their projects in preparation for publishing, and in addition, work on the publicity and marketing of their projects. Each student will be pushed toward the goal of creating a well-developed and polished body of work, a well-written statement, and the tools to launch the project into the fine art or documentary market. Participants will also produce a self-published photo book of their project. The final two class sessions will focus on the production of the photo book and planning and preparation for the exhibition’s opening night reception, currently scheduled for Friday, September 30, 2016. (Date subject to change.)
The class will culminate in a group exhibit at the Los Angeles Center of Photography (currently scheduled for Friday, March 18, 2016). After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson (www. alinesmithson.com) discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera. Aline was an overall juror in 2012 for Review Santa Fe, a juror for Critical Mass from 2009-2013, a juror for Flash Forward in 2012 and 2013, and is a reviewer at many photo festivals across the United States. Though she was nominated for The Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award from 2008-2012 and for The Santa Fe Prize in Photography in 2009 by Center, she considers her children her greatest achievement.
Students will be expected and must be prepared to meet the goals of the class. This workshop is strictly limited to 12 students. Instructor Aline Smithson will select the students chosen to participate in the workshop. Phone interviews with each student may be part of the process. A well-made photo-illustration adds another layer of intrigue to an already beautiful photograph. It has the potential to grab hold of your audience on a deeper, more personal level.
Ultimately, the workshop will inspire participants to reconsider how they make work, how they interpret their lives and their world, and by bringing depth and meaning to their efforts. Designed for all levels of fine art photographers.
Hugh Kretschmer (www.hughkretschnmer.net) received a BFA from Art Center College of Design and launched his career as a photo-illustrator in the editorial and advertising arenas. His fanciful yet provocative photographs balance between art and commerce, have brought him critical acclaim through numerous national and international awards, and have been the subject of many articles and industry blog posts. His work is now represented by Fathom Gallery in Los Angeles and Fotografenwerk, Dusseldorf. Hugh is currently an adjunct professor and part-time instructor at both Santa Monica College and UCLA.

Each class will include a lecture to inspire, followed by a brainstorming session, and critique of the previous week’s assignment. Assignments will be due weekly, and turned in on flash-drives. Students will sketch their ideas, and learn how to plan the shoot during every step of production.

Join Aline Smithson in a six-session workshop designed to help photographers create significance in their imagery. Participants will be exposed to genres of contemporary photography, projects created around ideas, and projects that tell personal stories. Aline will offer exercises so that students can identify a personal vision or a subject worth exploring, including photographing in the surrounding area. Work will be examined and critiqued thoroughly, offering students invaluable feedback as they reexamine the intention behind their photographs. She is not looking for technical expertise as much as the thought behind the photographs.
A R T
In this new, photo-illustration course, students will learn how to connect to their sensibilities through “scrapbooking”, develop their ideas, communicate their concepts through sketches and written descriptions, and plan their execution from pre through post-production. Students will be shown a variety of in-camera techniques that will entice and encourage them to think outside the digital “box” and help them to create unusual images that are visually tactile. Students will be given weekly assignments that will collectively immerse them into conceptual photography for both art and commerce, with the objective of walking away from the class with a portfolio of conceptually based imagery to be proud of.
F I N E
Today’s fine art photography market asks for more than beautifully, well crafted images. Curators, gallerists and editors are looking for work created with intention and/or work focused around an idea or concept. In addition, they are looking for photographers who can not only articulate their images, but interpret the world with intelligence and thoughtful analysis, whether it be work made close to home or in regions undiscovered.

This class is designed to help you expand your approach to photography, to question the “how” and “why” of your technique, and to challenge and understand your creative process. Do you have a creative palette? Where do your ideas come from? What makes you who you are as an artist? Do you constantly repeat yourself? Are you lost in “tradition”? Are you conceptually “frozen”? Do you ever break rules? The answers to these questions just might open doors to creativity and change how you approach your work.
This six-week workshop will begin to explore the world of portraiture, the basics of natural and artificial lighting, and the psychology of dealing with people in front of your camera. Lighting equipment and light-altering tools will be discussed and demonstrated, with weekly assignments given and critiqued, and student portfolios reviewed. Visual interpretation of subject matter is stressed as a creative approach to shooting people. Further emphasis will be on body language, interesting backgrounds and shooting environments, as well as paying attention to visual design, overall composition, and eye movement within the frame.
Beginning with the structure, design, and content of your portfolio, Ken Merfeld’s critical eye for detail and his passionate heart for this medium will challenge your communication and technical skills, the overall design sense and flow of your work, the emotional response expected from your viewer, and your personal work ethic. Ken has critiqued, edited, and reviewed thousands of commercial and fine art portfolios and brings an abundance of information, suggestions, and insight as to how approach and present work. Equipment and technology may change every six months but one must remain steadfast in their approach to art and commerce. This class will broaden your creative horizons, question your creative process, and examine where you are going with your work and how it is presented.
This workshop is open to beginning and intermediate levels with the goals of becoming more aware of light, gaining confidence with your subject, eliciting an emotional response from your viewers, and creating memorable images from your portrait sessions. Digital or film, black & white or color are accepted. Assignment prints are due each class session. Please bring portfolios to the first class meeting. Ken Merfeld (www.merfeldphotography.com) (www.merfeldcollo dion.com) is a Los Angeles-based commercial and fine art photographer. He owns and operates a studio in Culver City, California, where he photographs fashion, advertising, portrait and celebrity. His work has appeared in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Mademoiselle, Angeleno, Zoom, Black & White and Los Angeles Magazine. His commercial accounts include American Express, Nike, Kodak, Apple, Sony, Pacific Bell, Disney, Mattel, McDonald’s and Panavision. During his 25 years of commercial and fine art photography, he has explored the worlds of autistic children, people with their pets, parent and child, tattooed people, bikers, identical twins, transvestites, “little people,” erotica and more. Ken teaches photography part-time at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
Weekly assignments will be given to enhance your current portfolio and/or develop new bodies of work. Open to all levels. Please bring portfolios to first class meeting. How does a photographer cope with the loss of an entire dimension? How does a photographer resolve the iron-clad restrictions that the frame places of his point-of-view? Students in “The Photographer’s Eye” will become aware of the challenges posed by cameras and lenses, learn about the solutions that photographers have developed over 150 years of time and trial, explore the specifics of camera vision in such areas as motion, time, and focus, and examine hundreds of pictures in order to better understand the frame itself.

Photography’s essential artifact—the picture that’s created by a camera and printed on paper or viewed on a screen—is usually said to represent “the real world” faithfully, and with great precision. But those images are only representations; they’re separate from that real world in several very fundamental ways. The way lenses see depth and space; the way cameras understand time and motion; the way two-dimensional prints and screens impose edges and corners on what the camera sees—all that is truly different than our everyday experience of a three-dimensional world that brims with noise and aroma and a multitude of sensations.

Whether one’s interest is in portraiture, landscapes, or urban street shooting, working professionally or simply for one’s own personal enjoyment, this course is a powerhouse of knowledge and insight designed to further develop one’s photo eye, inherent style and effective use of composition, lighting, perspective and exposure to produce more compelling and meaningful photographs.

This two-day workshop serves as a hands-on introduction to this demanding but beautiful photographic process, invented by Frederick Scott Archer in the mid-19th Century. Participants will use large format period-correct cameras to explore the craftsmanship of tintypes and ambrotypes. The goal is to provide a taste of how the process works, with each participant walking away with 3-4 plates. We will be making photographs at/around the location of the workshop. Participants are invited to bring their own props, old costumes, etc.
This course serves as a continuation to The Wet Plate Collodion Workshop. Armed with skills learned from the prior class, students will be encouraged to produce new and interesting work using the three sub-fields of WPC (Glass Positive, Tintype, Glass Negative). The focus of the course is on creating work, rather than lecture and demonstration. Close instructor supervision and guidance will ensure that each student walks away as the proud owner of newly poured plates. All chemistry, media and cameras will be provided, in addition to information on purchasing one’s own WPC equipment. In addition, one female model will be available throughout the day. Please bring aprons and work clothing (materials are not overly toxic but can easily stain clothing).
Please bring disposable latex or nitrile gloves, aprons and work clothing (materials used can easily stain skin and clothing). The course is taught by Allan Barnes, a former photojournalist who has been working extensively with the process for almost ten years. A recent transplant to Northern California, Allan teaches workshops in the process at the Los Angeles Center of Photography, and also teaches photography classes at Petaluma High School in Petaluma, CA. His studio is located in Santa Rosa, CA.

The printing technique will be covered in-depth, including some very interesting variations including Gum over Platinum / Palladium, Cyanotype over Platinum/Palladium, and Varnishing. Students will learn the techniques, gain the skills needed to make enlarged digital negatives from digital files, and coat the alternative process solutions onto fine art papers used for each process. Students will also gain valuable experience working with variations of this alternative photographic processes, as well as the skills required to create images on their own including enlarged digital negatives.
Students will learn the techniques that allow the view camera to be so versatile while avoiding expensive pitfalls trying to figure it out by trial and error. Learn best practices from loading film to using the view camera’s movements for correcting architecture or shifting the plane of focus for creative distortions. Topics include choosing camera models from rail, field, and technical cameras and tips on buying used large format equipment. Large format film types, sizes and formats will be discussed along with lens choices, metering, processing and printing options.

We’ll discuss working with a wide range of personalities and levels of experience, from those new to acting to accomplished performers with decades of experience. Other topics will include photo processing, retouching, natural light, studio light and mixed lighting.

The art of wedding photography is also explored such as using camera settings and various lenses for beautiful effects. Students will have the opportunity to put the above-mentioned discussions into practice. Weekly assignments will be provided with the goal of helping each participant take the first step toward starting a wedding photography business. Shooting Fashion! A One-Day Workshop with Andrew Southam
Atypical Self-Publishing with Blurb with Dan Milnor

For many photographers, shooting fashion photography is a challenging yet richly rewarding experience. This creative, energetic one-day workshop will help participants shooting fashion imagery find direction. Students will explore some of the essential ingredients that make a memorable fashion shoot such as lighting techniques, concept and choice of equipment. Emphasis will be placed on developing the photographer’s style and point-of-view.
Today’s tools allow for a brand of “Atypical Publishing” which provides artists with newfound freedom and the chance to make a new style of fluid publication. Instead of being locked in on ONE publishing avenue, the modern photographer can tell a story with numerous publications each showcasing a unique style and attitude. This workshop will discuss these new alternatives and how best to utilize the Blurb publishing platform. Attendees will learn the range of Blurb publishing tools, see examples of “atypical” books and have a chance to make their own personal publication. Dan Milnor, Blurb Photographer at Large, will cover topics such as utilizing more than one format, collaboration, best use of magazine, serial publishing, themed books and how to best communicate with an audience interested in supporting the independent publisher.
Andrew Southam will present a brief history by showing images from the masters of the genre. He will then conduct a shooting demonstration showing participants first-hand his approaches and techniques. The afternoon will consist of shooting time for all the participants using models. Andrew will serve as a close guide, helping participants develop their own style, create portfolio-quality imagery, and further their knowledge and preparedness for professional shoots. The workshop will include evening wrap-up time for group critique and sharing of the day’s imagery.
Students should bring a selection of images, a laptop computer, a sense of humor and zeal in regard to what is possible. Attendees should prepare to unlearn as much as possible in regard to publishing, and also be prepared to do many of the things they were told never to do.
Andrew Southam (www.andrewsoutham.com) is an Australian fashion and portrait photographer and director. He has lived and worked in New York, London and Milan. He began his career doing photography for the Sydney Theatre Company and the Australian National Ballet. His work has been published in Australian, English, Italian and American Vogue, as well as American and French Elle, and his portraits have been exhibited in the Australian National Portrait Gallery. On the upcoming workshop Andrew has said, “I have never recovered from seeing photographs by Newton, Avedon, or Penn for the first time. I hope to impart something of that joy to anyone who takes the class.” Andrew currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife and son.
Dan Milnor (www.shifter.media) is a photographer and writer who is now, once again, performing his role as “Photographer at Large” for Blurb Inc., the world’s premiere indie publishing platform. He has taught at Art Center College of Design, Academy of Art University, The Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, Los Angeles Center of Photography and the Photo Experience Workshops. His work is in the collections of The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The George Eastman House and The Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Dan is currently working on a series of classic photo-essays which revolve around Blurb users who are living artistic, creative lives.

Street Portraiture with Michael Long
Environmental Portraiture with Mark Edward Harris
© Mark Edward Harris
Learn how to easily approach strangers on the street and then win approval for a spontaneous portrait session. In this class students are taken step-by-step about what to say in order to make an immediate connection with a stranger and ultimately produce a dynamic street portrait image.
This practical, one-day workshop will give participants the necessary confidence and foundation to photograph people in their natural surroundings.
Instructor Michael Long will be at your side on the street enthusiastically showing how to put the techniques in action. Compositional strategies will be explained and demonstrated. Students will develop an eye to read existing lighting and use it to their advantage. Michael will help with posing the newfound “models” in effort to find the winning shot. Participants will also discover how to quickly locate a supporting “environment” for their subjects. The result is a shift from making average people snapshots to sophisticated portrait images. Time is set aside for review of images to anchor the learning process.
At the end of the day’s shoot, students will return to the studio for a group critique session. Suitable for photographers with little to advanced lighting experience, this workshop is designed to inspire participants to create powerful, meaningful images of real, everyday people.
By the end of the workshop students will walk away with wonderful images for their portfolios and will learn how to easily meet and photograph people on the street—whether it be in Los Angeles or anywhere in the world. Michael Long (www.MichaelLongArtist.com), visual artist, earned an MFA degree in photography from the University of Colorado and a BFA degree in photography from the College of Santa Fe. He has taught photography and painting for more than twenty-five years, including at the Santa Fe Photography Workshops, University of Colorado, Eastern New Mexico University, University of Hawaii, Dar al-Kalima College (Bethlehem, Palestine), The Contemporary Museum (Austin, TX) and the Dougherty Arts School (Austin, TX). More than just a technical class on Photoshop and Lightroom, this course will emphasize the digital print as a unique art form in which the choice of inkjet paper to print on makes the difference between an ordinary photo and an extraordinary piece of artwork.
One of the forefathers of photography and inventor of the “zone system,” Ansel Adams created a systematic approach to exposure and printing that allowed photographers to control the tonality of an image from capture to final output. The “zone system” and his workflows allowed photographers to get the most out of film photography, a medium of capturing light onto light sensitive silver halide crystals suspended in acetate. Today, as silver halide gives way to CCD and CMOS sensors, much of Adams philosophies may be applied to the much more powerful and nuanced tool of the digital darkroom. This black and white digital printing workshop aims in to explore ways photographers can maximize the performance of their images through the advantages of digital exposure and the digital darkroom. The class will be broken down into three segments: 1) Digital Capture: Getting the most out of digital sensors, 2) Digital Darkroom: Using Camera Raw and Adobe Photoshop to maximize the performance of our images and 3) Final Output: Optimizing for print. Students will gain a thorough understanding the digital printing process as it specifically pertains to black and white, and will walk away with at least one beautiful print.

Visual Storytelling Through Portraiture for Teens (ages 12-18) with Todd Felderstein
Street Portraiture for Teens (ages 12-18) with Todd Felderstein
© Todd Felderstein

A photographic portrait is not simply a headshot or an image of a pretty face. One can create a portrait of a person that expresses something, that teaches the viewer something new about the subject and tells a story.
Do you have a photographer’s eye that singles out many moments often unnoticed by others? In our ever-changing landscape there are so many of these instances that can be captured if you have the knowing, planning and expertise. Deemed “Street Photography”, this art-form goes beyond the snapshot into the artistic documentation of today’s urban realities by harnessing emotion, light, shadows and storytelling in a single image.
In this week long class students will learn how to get the most out of their subject and create portraits that can be read like biographies. Using other members of the class as models, as well as family and friends at home, students will work on getting to know their subjects as best as possible, make a conscious decision about the message or story they want to convey about their subject and create images that reflect this intention. We will work both in and outside the studio setting, learning how surroundings and environments can lend to or detract from a portrait.
“Street Portraiture” builds on this art style where the photographer capitalizes on the raw beauty of the unposed subject creating a natural, unencumbered photograph. Technically the photographer is forced to move from the shadows to directly engage the subject transitioning from a former candid creation to a deliberate portrait. In this class, join filmmaker and photographer Todd Felderstein as together we will discover the secrets in “Street Portraiture” that will hone our storytelling skills, allowing us to better discover hidden gems and how to approach and engage random subjects without disrupting their environment. This class will further address composition, lighting, cameras and the psychology behind this style of shooting. We will create an assortment of portraits on a weekly basis while always challenging our comfort zone and creative eye. The course will conclude with a final project to be presented to the entire class.
Students will also shoot self-portraits, employing similar techniques as used when photographing other models. We will give consideration to who you are and what you would like to convey about yourself. Whether shooting models or self-portraits, the goal of this class is for students to create an image that captures the essence of their subject. Todd Felderstein (www.toddfelderstein.com) is a narrative and documentary filmmaker and photographer who continues to amass global recognition and accolades through his multi-hyphenated storytelling career. He was part of the creative team behind Sony’s Spider-Man, the Animated Series and co-wrote The Sword of Shikata staring Gina Gershon as Spidey’s newest nemesis. Todd has ongoing blogs in the Huffington Post and the Hollywood Journal and is an active mentor in some of the more challenged communities throughout Los Angeles promoting storytelling through filmmaking and photography.
Having completed Street Portraiture for Teens, students will walk away with a more refined photographer’s eye, a greater technical understanding, and a greater sense of confidence when venturing out with their camera, regardless of the surrounding culture and community. The Special Project for Teens (ages 12-18) with Andrea Passarella
The Art of Photographic Capture for Teens (ages 12-18) with Lee Corkett

Choosing a meaningful topic is the first step of any personally driven photography project. Your subject could be exploring form, color, texture and shadows, or it could be the life of a family member or a part of your city. In this fun and collaborative class, students will learn the art of visual storytelling and the importance of the editing process. We’ll emphasize developing a special topic of focus and using your camera skills to bring that topic to life to produce a series of images that are stylistically and thematically unified. We’ll discuss in-camera composition and after-the-photograph analysis of what worked, and we’ll explore documentary versus more personal and artistic projects to develop each photographer’s personal vision and style. Come ready to have fun and explore a topic your curious about, in whatever visual form it comes.
Photography is the art of looking at the same world as everyone else, but challenging yourself to see something new. This class will consider pre-existing ideas about photographs and push students to think about using images to not just record reality, but to present it as a unique experience.
The class will work together in a supportive and constructive environment, critiquing each other’s work on a daily basis. The goal is for each student to complete a cohesive, meaningful body of work. A digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera is recommended for this class; however, all types of cameras are welcome, including film cameras, point & shoot cameras and smart phones.
Designed to take the advanced beginning photographer to the next level of expression, this course focuses on analyzing and practicing the basic technical capture of photographs and using cameras to interpret the world around them. The class will weigh technology and creativity equally and begin to solidify the students’ understanding of the histogram, deliberate exposure for output, understanding of depth of field and how to simplify or complicate subjects through its use, and how shutter speed can lengthen or compress the representation of time in a single photograph. Students will be given examples of how photographers have met these concerns in the past and conceptual projects will be assigned using the methods learned. In order to create a proven method for success, students will draw on their own personal interests and histories and will keep a visual journal of their progress to track their creative process.
