Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends, Please let me tell you about what we are doing at the Los Angeles Center of Photography today and what we dream of doing in the future, with your help. At our last energized board of directors’ meeting, we decided that our goal for our next move is to raise enough money for a 10,000 square-foot space. We want to build a darkroom, expand our library, provide a work and gathering place for our members, build a beautiful gallery, and increase our classroom space and computer and printing lab. One of the main reasons that we became a non-profit four years ago is so that we could provide photography programs to underserved kids. We are proud and honored to be affiliated with the national SPARK program. Twice a year, Le Conte Middle School sends us 10 students to work with a mentor at LACP weekly for 10 weeks. So far, all of the mentors we’ve had in the past two years have been volunteers. The used cameras we had were donations from our friends. This year, we were provided with 11 new Fujifilm cameras specifically for the SPARK program, which we are very grateful for. Our affiliation with the Boys & Girls Club program began in 2015 when Louis Kravitz, a LACP member, told me that he had worked for years with the Boyle Heights Boys & Girls Club. I told Louis that if he could raise money for cameras, I would volunteer my time to build a program, something I had been thinking about and mentioned to Louis. It took him only one month to meet my challenge, so I jumped in for two years, building a program suited specifically for a Boys & Girls Club. With this prototype, a talented grant writer named Brian Gauthier who was funded by board member Bill Broder, wrote a grant to a family foundation and we were awarded a substantial six-figure grant by a family foundation to take our program to 10 Boys & Girls Clubs over the next two years. I am ecstatic over this, as you can imagine. In 2018, we will take our program to Clubs in Long Beach, South Central, Lincoln Heights, and Santa Monica. The following year, we will implement the program into an additional six clubs. There are 26 Boys & Girls Clubs in LA County and our goal is to raise enough money to share our photo program with all of them. We all work very hard at LACP, but we can’t thrive and grow without your help. We appreciate any and all support you can give LACP. Thank you so much for your support. Sincerely,

This workshop will help you develop and hone your ability to craft personal conceptual images with authentic emotional resonance. In the context of a supportive, collaborative community, we will spend the weekend assembling, lighting, and photographing minidioramas—no special skills necessary!

In this fun and creative workshop, students will learn how to enhance their current portfolio or begin a new project by discovering fresh ways of creating unique and singular work. Friday evening will be spent discussing what is a portfolio and how to begin a new body of work or continue a deeper exploration of a current one.

These constructed scenes may tell stories, suggest dreams, or reveal inner landscapes. Time will also be spent photographing live models in the studio lighting bays, as we learn to shape the lighting to express moods and emotions. We will look at old and new photographic masters for inspiration, analyzing their composition, color, and lighting strategies. Finally, as we strive to grow in our role as emotional messengers, we will discuss and explore chosen methods and techniques, based on both current brain research and time tested artistic practice, that are designed to push us out of our comfort zones to higher levels of creative engagement.

Saturday continues with an exploration of the creative process involving lots of writing and brainstorming in visual source books to see what concerns/ideas we are drawn to. We will discuss the threads that unite images to make a portfolio and most importantly, how to turn ideas into pictures—making the unseen seen through use of metaphor and symbol and the formal concerns of light and frame. Students then will go out and shoot in the beautiful light of late afternoon, evening and night. We will continue the creative process on Sunday while each student works privately in a short one-on-one session with Cig to discuss their edits and ideas. Students will then present the start of their new projects to the group for feedback and discussion.

The measurable goal of the workshop will be for each participant to produce one or two digital photographs of their constructed mini-dioramas, as well as a small selection of studio portraits, to be shared in our closing presentation.

Cig Harvey‘s (www.cigharvey.com) photographs and books have been exhibited widely and are in the permanent collections of major museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the International Museum of Photography, George Eastman House, Rochester, NY. She was a recent finalist for the prestigious BMW Prize at Paris Photo and had her first solo museum show at The Stenersen Museum, Oslo, Norway. Cig is a full-time Assistant Professor of Photography at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. She is known for her high energy, creative teaching style and brings a profound sense of optimism to all that she does.

Richard Tuschman (http://www.richardtuschman.com) began experimenting with digital imaging in the early 1990s, developing a style that synthesized his interests in photography, painting and assemblage. He has been exhibited widely, both in the US and internationally. Accolades and awards include Prix de la Photographie Paris (Gold medal, People’s Choice), Critical Mass Top 50, International Kontinent Awards (1st Place, Fine Art Projects) and Center Project Launch Juror’s Award (chosen by Roger Watson, Fox Talbot Museum) among others. Richard is the recipient of a 2016 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Photography. He currently lives and works in New York City.

One Week of Street Photography

Beginning with a overview of each students history and a critique of their current work, the workshop will then push forward to working on the street; and conclude with a focus on editing and sequencing to communicate a specific point of view. Gus Powell will share why he loves pointing a loaded camera at people he doesn’t know, and what it takes to be committed. Topics covered include: ambiguity & poetic truth, a sense of place, the “decisive moment,” optimism & pessimism, when your protagonist isn’t a person, pictures that are nouns & pictures that are verbs, how and when to approach people, when to get closer, when to get farther, when to get a coffee, and more.

Greg Gorman’s (www.gormanphotography.com)) work documents that peculiar obsession of the 20th century celebrity. Each shot, a testament to the individual character, gives a picture of human nature in its infinite range. “For me a photograph is most successful when it doesn’t answer all the questions,” says Gorman, “and it leaves something to be desired.” For over three decades, Greg Gorman has continued to master the art of photography. From personality portraits and advertising campaigns to magazine layouts and fine art work, Greg has developed and showcased a discriminating and unique style in his profession.

Gus Powell (http://www.guspowell.com) was born in New York City in 1974 and attended Oberlin College where he majored in comparative religion. In 2003 he was selected to be in PDNs 30 under 30 issue and also published his first monograph, titled The Company of Strangers (J&L Books). His work has been exhibited internationally including a solo show at The Museum of The City of New York. His photographs have been published in Aperture, Harpers, Vogue, Wired, Fortune, W, and he has been a regular contributor to The New Yorker magazine. He is a member of the collective of street photographers In-Public and faculty at the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department at the School of Visual Arts, NY. He is included in the books Bystander: A World History of Street Photography and Street Photography Now.

Join photographer Greg Gorman in this hands-on, weekend workshop as he shares his portrait lighting techniques both in the studio and on location. Greg will discuss how he approaches people and how he analyzes a face, as well as his use of different camera angles, lens choices and background choices to create good images. George Hurrell spent the last 12 years of his life shooting in Bobbi’s studio, during which he experienced a revival of popularity for his classic style. You will be learning from her first-hand experience with George’s creative approach to lighting, styling and posing. After hands-on shooting, Lee will teach Lightroom and Photoshop retouching techniques that allow you to replicate Hurrell’s classic creamy B&W tones and smooth skin. In addition, we will have special guest, Richard Settle, George Hurrell’s personal photographic assistant for the last 10 years of his life.

Join National Geographic photographer Sam Abell as he guides photographers along their journey, conducting a weekend divided amongst shooting assignments, portfolio reviews, and discussions all with one purpose: creating images that have more clarity while simultaneously developing a true, unique personal vision. Sam will discuss his technique of seeing in layers, the importance of seeing well, and how to see with more discriminating power. The goal of this workshop is to help each participant discover where they are now and where their work can take them.

Bobbi’s multi-faceted approach to photography incorporates over 35 years of technical experience with innovative artistic interpretation. Sam Abell’s (www.samabell.com) thirty-year career has been dedicated to achieving artistic expression through documentary photography. He has pursued his goals primarily through his lengthy, in-depth coverage for National Geographic magazine and its Book Division. At the same time, he has maintained a career as an artist, teacher and author. His numerous book credits include The Life of a Photograph, Seeing Gardens and The Photographic Life. His most recent book, Amazonia, was published in January 2010 to coincide with a traveling exhibition of images organized by the University of Oregon Art Museum. He is currently at work on a sixteen-volume set of books titled Life and Still Life: The Sam Abell Library.

The Complete “Fine Art” Weekend with Brooke Shaden

Light, Shadow, Night and Twilight with David H. Wells

In this fun and explorative workshop, David H. Well will teach students the most effective way of incorporating light, shadow, night and twilight in their image-making to produce photographs with unique characteristics and achieve extraordinary results. The class starts with David showing samples of his work and sharing specific techniques used to create his “Light Study” photo-essays. Following a viewing of student work on Saturday morning and a lecture in the early afternoon, the class will photograph on location between 3-7 pm, in order to take advantage of the best afternoon and early evening light. During this assignment, David will work oneon-one with each student. On Sunday, the group will shoot early in the morning in order to appreciate the difference between morning and evening light. The mid-day and afternoon include a detailed critique of the work made over the weekend. Participants will apply what they have learned in class, including an understanding of the quality and direction of light, the basics of twilight/night photography, scouting a location with a compass to plot the play of light, the use of lines (light and dark) and framing to create dramatic images when no dramatic light exists.

Brooke Shaden (https://brookeshaden.com/gallery) studied filmmaking and English in college and graduated with those two degrees as she discovered photography for the first time. Channeling a love for storytelling and a desire to create visually into a still camera, she began creating self-portraits that were both atmospheric and otherworldly. Self-portraiture blossomed into a career as a fine art photographer, and today she works as a visual storyteller creating surreal, whimsical and often dark works with a camera and Photoshop. Her images have been awarded with a number of fine art and conceptual awards as well as solo and group shows with gallery representation. As of March 2017 she became a Sony Artisan of Imagery.

David H. Wells (http://www.davidhwells.com/) is a freelance documentary photographer and photo-educator based in Providence, Rhode Island. He specializes in inter-cultural communications and the use of light and shadow to enhance visual narratives. David’s Light Studies have appeared in a wide range of exhibitions and publications including the Philadelphia Inquirer Sunday Magazine and Rhode Island Monthly. He has received two Fulbright Fellowships, a grant from Nikon/N.P.P.A. and a fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. David has taught workshops at the International Center for Photography in NYC and the Maine Media Workshops.

Join photographer Kimberly Witham for a weekend workshop developing and refining your still life photography skills. The weekend will begin with a discussion of historical and contemporary still life. From there, Kimberly will explain her studio process from arrangement to final print.

Today’s fine art photography market asks for more than beautifully, well crafted images. Curators, gallerists and editors are looking for work created with intention and/or work focused around an idea or concept. In addition, they are looking for photographers who can not only articulate their images, but interpret the world with intelligence and thoughtful analysis, whether it be work made close to home or in regions undiscovered.

The workshop will include demonstrations and hands-on assignments as well as feedback on work produced. Topics will include the use of both manipulated daylight and strobe lighting, arranging and composing still life images, selecting objects to photograph and final considerations for printing and presentation. Students will be come confident in controlling the light in their still life imagery and understand how to depict certain moods through lighting. The class will explore various still life objects such as glass, food, flowers and fabric. Special attention will be given to photographing for meaning and with intention.

Join Aline Smithson in a three-day workshop designed to help photographers create focused and meaningful projects. Participants will be exposed to genres of contemporary photography, projects created around ideas, and projects that tell personal stories. Aline will offer exercises so that students can identify a personal vision or a subject worth exploring. She is not looking for technical expertise as much as the thought behind the photographs. She will also meet with students one-on-one and shooting assignments will be given.

Her photographs are strongly influenced by her studies in art history and her interest in the natural world. Basic Photography

After the Basics: Intermediate Photography

with Peter Bennett

In this beginning six-week workshop, students will learn all the controls and functions on their digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras, basic camera operation (including f-stop, shutter speed and ISO), fundamental concepts of photography, and how to control the photograph’s final look. Discussions include composition and light, how to get the background in or out of focus, how to stop or blur motion, why to use one ISO over another, when to use a tripod, and how to use the camera’s light meter to provide the best exposure. Other topics covered include using the appropriate lens for a desired effect (the difference between a prime lens and a zoom lens), how to hold the focus on a subject if changing camera positions (exploring auto focus modes and manual focus), and how to properly hold the camera.

In this sequential class to Basic Photography, students will get reinforcement in the concepts from the previous class and push toward the next level of photographic expression. Emphasis will be on image capture while practicing sound technical fundamentals. Using the camera to interpret the world around them, students will work toward mastering camera settings, metering techniques, and white balance selection for proper image capture. Over one week, participants will be given exercises to photograph the major genres of photography, including portraiture, landscape, still life, documentary, architecture, and finally shooting in blackand-white. Students will be given examples of how photographers have approached these genres, and conceptual projects will be assigned using the methods learned. Weekly critique and feedback will offer guidance for each student as they move toward mastering their camera.

Digital camera technology will be covered thoroughly, such as how to adjust the camera’s white balance, how to view and delete images, the difference between shooting RAW and JPEG, choosing the appropriate memory card, and how to transfer the image from the camera to a computer. The goal is to provide each participant with the technical information needed to operate his or her digital SLR camera properly and with the confidence and ability to shoot consistently in manual mode.

The idea behind this class is to have students learn how to use their digital camera with predictable and repeatable results while having fun in the process, and to begin to communicate through photography instead of just taking snapshots. Peter Bennett (http://www.citizenoftheplanet.com) has been a successful travel and environmental photographer for over 25 years. From 1998 to 2014 he owned and ran Ambient Images, a photo agency specializing in New York, California and environmental imagery. In 2015 he formed Citizen of the Planet, LLC, devoted exclusively to the distribution of his stories and work that focus on environmental subjects such as fracking, drought, green construction, alternative energies, urban farming and water and air quality issues. His books include: New York City: A Photographic Portrait, Our San Diego and Only in Los Angeles. His book on the Los Angeles River is due out next year.

The Steps to Success

This class, designed for all levels of photographers seeking to advance their careers, provides the insights, tools and resources necessary to achieve a higher level of success. Student challenges will be addressed, both as a group and in one 20-minute private session per student (to be scheduled individually.) Divided among five in-class sessions, the course will analyze where the photographers’ careers are currently and where they are headed. This six-week workshop will begin to explore the world of portraiture, the basics of natural and artificial lighting, and the psychology of dealing with people in front of your camera. Lighting equipment and light-altering tools will be discussed and demonstrated, with weekly assignments given and critiqued, and student portfolios reviewed. Visual interpretation of subject matter is stressed as a creative approach to shooting people. Further emphasis will be on body language, interesting backgrounds and shooting environments, as well as paying attention to visual design, overall composition, and eye movement within the frame.

This class is designed to help you expand your approach to photography, to question the “how” and “why” of your technique, and to challenge and understand your creative process. Do you have a creative palette? Where do your ideas come from? What makes you who you are as an artist? Do you constantly repeat yourself? Are you lost in “tradition”? Are you conceptually “frozen”? Do you ever break rules? The answers to these questions just might open doors to creativity and change how you approach your work. The Personal Project with Aline Smithson

The Next Step 2 with Aline Smithson

This nine-month class is Los Angeles Center of Photography’s’ “master” class. It is designed for serious photographers who are interested in creating a significant personal project. Students will work toward creating a strong, cohesive body of work that will culminate in an exhibit at LACP for a month-long run.

Students will be expected and must be prepared to meet the goals of the class. This workshop is strictly limited to 12 students. Aline was an overall juror in 2012 for Review Santa Fe, a juror for Critical Mass from 2009-2013, a juror for Flash Forward in 2012 and 2013, and is a reviewer at many photo festivals across the United States. Though she was nominated for The Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award from 2008-2012 and for The Santa Fe Prize in Photography in 2009 by Center, she considers her children her greatest achievement.

After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson (www. alinesmithson.com) discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera.

After presenting project ideas in the first class, the ensuing five class sessions will be spent critiquing on-going work thoroughly. We will analyze approach, quality, and progress of the projects. Students will be encouraged to research their projects in preparation for publishing, and in addition, work on the publicity and marketing of their projects. Each student will be pushed toward the goal of creating a well-developed and polished body of work, a well-written statement, and the tools to launch the project into the fine art or documentary market. Participants will also produce a self-published photo book of their project. The final two class sessions will focus on the production of the photo book and planning and preparation for the exhibition’s opening night reception, currently scheduled for Friday, September 14, 2018. Designed for students who have completed The Next Step 1 in or prior to 2017, this four-session class continues to instruct the emerging photographer on how to present work to the fine art and documentary markets. Photographers are encouraged to build on their bodies of work and come prepared to fine-tune, edit, and enhance their series or images. The class will explore competitions, grants, presentation and packaging, marketing, and other venues for presenting work. Submissions to competitions and portfolio reviews will be encouraged and guest speakers, if available, will share their work.

Joseph A. Rheaume (http://josephrheaume.wordpress.com) is a fine art photographer and educator from the western U.S. An active career in music gave way to his educational endeavors in 1996 when he began his studies at Arizona State University. By 2003 he had earned degrees in Engineering (BS) with an emphasis in Graphic Communications, Technology (MS) with an emphasis in Printing, and finally Fine Art (MFA) with an emphasis in Photography. Currently, Joseph holds the position of Program Coordinator for Digital Projects at the Center for Creative Photography (CCP) at the University of Arizona in Tucson where he manages the Digital Imaging operations for the CCP.

Allan Barnes (http://www.allanbarnes.com) is a former photojournalist currently specializing in fashion and portraiture using antique photographic processes. His work has been exhibited widely in numerous locations and his client list includes the New York Times, Detroit Free Press, Spin and Metropolis Magazine. He holds a Master of Arts Degree in Photography from Ohio University and has taught photo classes at Santa Monica College, Citrus College and Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, MI. Allan has been teaching the Wet Plate Collodion class at LACP since December, 2007.

Platinum/Palladium printing will be covered in-depth; workshop participants will learn the techniques and gain the skills needed to make enlarged digital negatives from digital files and coat the alternative process solutions onto fine art papers. A historical and technical discussion of platinum/palladium printing and its variations will be presented as well as a short critique of all of the prints made (time permitting). The goal is to provide each participant with an opportunity to experience the subtleties of the process and walk away with 4-5 prints and negatives as well as the knowledge and skills required to create images on their own including making enlarged digital negatives.

Participants will use large format period-correct cameras to explore the craftsmanship of tintypes and ambrotypes. After a brief historical discussion of the process, students will be trained in the coating, exposure, development and preservation of the photographic plate. The goal is to provide a taste of how the process works, with each participant walking away with 3-4 plates. We will be making photographs at/around the location of the workshop. Participants are invited to bring their own props, old costumes, etc.

Photography is a magical processes, and making fine photographic prints with your hands is an exciting experience. This one and one-half day hands-on workshop will introduce participants to the processes and techniques needed to make digital negatives and beautiful platinum/palladium prints from those digital negatives.

In efforts to advance photography in the mid-19th century, Fredrick Scott Archer, an English sculptor and photographer, experimented with collodion in the hope of producing a photographic negative on ordinary glass plates. The process was perfected in 1851. This twoday workshop serves as a hands-on introduction to this demanding but beautiful photographic process.

Michael e. Stern (http://www.buildabetterphotograph.com) is an award- winning Los Angeles-based photographer specializing in both construction time-lapse photography and portraiture. Michael’s still photographs have been published in more than a dozen books published by Disney Press, in addition to catalogs for Sotheby’s, Cinema Secrets and Sid and Marty Kroft. Michael has taught at community colleges, private colleges, online and one-on-one tutoring. Hugh Kretschmer (http://www.hughkretschmer.net) set his sights on a career in photography at the age of 13, when his father taught him how to print his very first photograph in the family darkroom. Since then, he has never looked back, receiving a BFA from Art Center College of Design, and launching his career as a photo-illustrator in the editorial and advertising arenas. His fanciful yet provocative photographs balance between art and commerce, and have brought him critical acclaim through numerous national and international awards. His work is now represented by Fathom Gallery in Los Angeles and Fotografenwerk, Dusseldorf, while on the commercial side has garnered him a long client list that includes Old Spice, Huggies, Honda, Toyota, Kohler, Evian, New York Times Magazine, Time, Vanity Fair, and Oprah Magazine. Kretschmer is currently an adjunct professor and part-time instructor at both Santa Monica College and UCLA.

Students will work in both black-and-white and color while learning how to “see” in the chosen mode. Weekly assignments will be given followed by critiques during the next class session. In this six-session course, a logical continuation for students who have completed both Basic Photography and After the Basics: Intermediate Photography, students will continue to learn basic camera operation and photography fundamentals while practicing and refining their personal process for achieving a unique photographic vision.

The course focuses on analyzing and practicing the basic technical capture of photographs and using cameras to interpret the world around them. Assignments will guide students towards the creation of a project—a series of images with a common theme and style. During the run of the course, students will be introduced to basic features Adobe Lightroom. The software allows viewing, organizing and retouching large numbers of digital images. In addition, students will learn the “capture to print” process by selecting a singular favorite image from their projects for printing.

Over one week, participants will be given exercises to photograph the major genres of photography, including portraiture, landscape, still life, documentary, architecture, and finally shooting in blackand-white. Students will be given examples of how photographers have approached these genres, and conceptual projects will be assigned using the methods learned. Weekly critique and feedback will offer guidance for each student as they move toward mastering their camera.

Lighting 101 with Stephen Schafer

Mastering Your Flash with Julia Dean

Camera manuals tell us how to use your camera but they don’t show us how to use light—the single most important element in photography. This course will introduce you to the nuts and bolts of light, allowing you to control and pre-visualize light and empowering you to light anything, anytime, anywhere.

If you feel confident with a camera but less so with a flash and would like to master portable lights, this class is for you. The goal of this six-week class is to learn how to use a flash so well that the outcome looks like beautiful ambient light. The technology today makes this easier than ever before.

In this one-day lighting essentials workshop we’ll focus on diverse subjects indoors and out and try to match them with a perfect light (or dark). We’ll examine both natural and artificial lighting and introduce you to the qualities of light like contrast, color balance and CRI. We’ll surgically disect the lighting used in some of Stephen’s photos from the last twenty years and any photos that you bring with you. Our demo will evolve from a single light in a dark studio to a complex multi-strobe set using with gels, flags, reflectors and polarizers.

Students will work in various lighting situations, using the flash as both the main source of light and as a fill light. Each week, there will be lectures and demonstrations which include how to use a flash in both TTL and manual mode, on camera and off, how to determine exposure, how to control the light output of the flash, how to diffuse the flash, and how and why to include or exclude ambient light. Demonstrations using stands and umbrellas will be given showing bounce modes and multiple strobe use. Students will be given assignments each week to complete and bring in to the next class. This class is guaranteed to make you a master of your flash.

Essential for beginning and intermediate photographers alike, whether you want to buy your first lighting kit, or tame twilight portraits, this class will help you understand everything that glows or flashes and master your lighting inside and outside the studio.

Please bring camera/lens, flash unit(s), manuals, memory cards, extra batteries (for camera and flash) and a jump drive (for transferring your images for critique). Please bring plenty of extra batteries for your flash units.

Stephen “Schaf” Schafer (www.schafphoto.com) is an award-winning Southern California commercial photographer who has been successfully producing product, people, and location photographs in the US, Asia, Central America the Middle East, and Europe. In addition to his commercial success he has been enamored with black and white infrared for all his personal fine art work since shooting his first roll in 1987. He exhibits his infrared fine art extensively in museums and galleries. Schaf is a member of the Freestyle Board of Advisors and has extensively tested their line of IR films.

Introduction to Location Lighting with Jennifer Emery

Mastering the skill of lighting on location takes planning in addition to technical savvy. Photographers must be capable of scouting an appropriate location, assessing how time of day will affect the outcome, and determining what quality of light will best facilitate the mood of the picture. Will it be a blend of ambient and artificial light, or does the strobe dominate? Do we use direct or indirect light, hard or diffuse light? How do we adapt to organic changes in the physical environment? This workshop is designed to help answer these questions.

Mastering the tools of lighting is the key to mastering studio photography. In this six-week workshop, students will gain a solid foundation of studio lighting and practical knowledge of light. Working hands-on with the equipment, participants will learn how to select the proper light source for their subjects whether shooting portraits, still life or product.

She specializes in commercial, fashion, and lifestyle portrait photography and is an adjunct photography professor at Santa Monica College. The class begins with a little tech talk on basic physics of light, practical understanding that directly applies to photography and be will put to use throughout the workshop. We will move on to discussing and working with subtleties of natural light and then the integration of artificial light. Students will discover how equipment choice can affect the mood of an image by experimenting with various light sources and modifiers such as bounces, diffusion material, umbrellas, soft boxes and grids. Basic as well as more complex lighting setups will be demonstrated and discussed. Emphasis will be placed upon utilizing the surrounding environment to the photographer’s advantage.

The class will start out with basic lighting setups and move into more detail with studio strobes, reflectors, fill flash, soft boxes, umbrellas, scrims, grids, snoots, flags, gobos and the use of light meters for better exposure. Students will learn about the quality, color and contrast of light to enhance their subject, and create dimension and depth. Each class will be a combination of lecture and handson time for each student to shoot using the equipment. Exercises will include photographing models, still life and product in order to develop a well-rounded knowledge of using studio strobes for various purposes. Students will leave the workshop with a practical and confident understanding of studio lighting and how to control it.

In this weekend workshop, explore the workings, both creative and technical, behind producing portraiture in natural light. Instructor Just Loomis guides students in looking closely at the relationship between photographer and subject, with the goal of creating a series of emotionally resonant images while exploring important natural light technical issues.

This one-day studio lighting course is designed as a basic introduction to lighting portraits in a controlled studio environment. In addition to learning technical use of equipment, participants will explore why great lighting, composition and styling are important elements in the creation of a successful portrait, as well as delving into other techniques that will help the photographer in connecting to the essence of the subject.

Just explains and demonstrates his method of working, a significant part of which has to do with interpersonal connections: finding and approaching a subject, helping a subject overcome shyness and fears, and establishing trust and rapport. He will also discuss the importance of understanding why you as a photographer are drawn to certain human characteristics and why this is crucial to the creation of engaging portraiture. Lectures will consist of examining other important photographers and their body of work, as well as overcoming technical challenges when photographing portraits in natural light. Further, Just will work individually with each participant to asses their strengths and progression.

The day begins with a discussion and demonstration examining the details of light quality. What makes a light source soft versus hard, and which quality is appropriate for portraiture? There will be discussion on lighting for skin tones, eyes and hair and ways of dealing with those attributes. Participants will experiment with assignments throughout the day, learning how to create and manipulate a wide range of light qualities. Basic light modifiers, including soft boxes, umbrellas, beauty dishes, and grids will be employed, with the strengths and weaknesses of each being discussed. The role of light in a photograph to create mood, depth, dimension, and texture will also be examined. Examples of successful portraits by legendary and contemporary photographers will be analyzed, serving as a source of inspiration.

The first day will be spent on natural light demonstration and how light can reveal a subject. The second day will involve shooting out on the streets with models and/or selecting subjects from people that we know. The course concludes with a group critique of the work taken during class. Just Loomis (http://www.justloomis.com) is a portrait and fine art photographer working in Los Angeles and Berlin. He is a longtime assistant and friend of Helmut and June Newton. A graduate of Art Center College, he began his career in Milan, Italy in 1983 with Carla Sozzani at Vogue Sposa. His photographs have been chosen “Photo of the Year” by American Photographer and his album cover for the band Aha was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Kevin Scanlon (http://www.kevinscanlon.com) is an award-winning freelance portrait photographer. In 2001, he quit his day-job in Arizona as a database administrator to become a professional photographer, before moving to Los Angeles in 2003. His clients include LA Weekly, New York Times, Darko Entertainment, Merck, and Warner Brothers Records. His early work consisted of music photography, and his images appeared on Weezer t-shirts and in Jimmy Eat World album artwork.

At the end of the day’s shoot, students will return to the studio for a group critique session. Suitable for photographers with little to advanced lighting experience, this workshop is designed to inspire participants to create powerful, meaningful images of real, everyday people.

Jennifer Emery will begin the day with lecture, discussion and presentation of her approaches and techniques to capturing the nude. After lunch, the class will travel to a nearby beautiful modern home where the students will meet with the models. The majority of the day will be spent working closely with the models and learning how to best capture the poetic spirit of the nude. The last part of the day will consist of a critique and conversation about work created during the workshop. Jennifer will draw lessons from her recently published book, The Nude, Conceptual Approaches to Fine Art Photography.

The day begins with examples of successful environmental portraits by legendary photographers. These photographs will be analyzed and serve as sources of inspiration. The class continues with a “warm-up” of basic lighting demonstrations with an emphasis on available, natural light and the use of properly color-balanced flash. Students will be encouraged to venture further into techniques that will help them connect to the essence of the subject before their lens. After lunch, participants will apply their skills to crafting their own, unique environmental portraits using the wide array of personalities Hollywood has to offer.

In this one-day workshop, students will start with a concept or theme that will open up their creativity and approaches to capturing the nude. While this workshop will cover many technical aspects of what makes a lasting nude image, the emphasis will be on working with models and the concept of the powerful nude to create images that truly reflect the strength and artistry of the human form. The most powerful nude images come not from removing their physical presentation from their emotional, sensual and intellectual presence but rather making sure that a photograph truly reflects all these elements.

Photography’s essential artifact—the picture that’s created by a camera and printed on paper or viewed on a screen—is usually said to represent “the real world” faithfully, and with great precision. But those images are only representations; they’re separate from that real world in several very fundamental ways. The way lenses see depth and space; the way cameras understand time and motion; the way two-dimensional prints and screens impose edges and corners on what the camera sees—all that is truly different than our everyday experience of a three-dimensional world that brims with noise and aroma and a multitude of sensations.

Join author and award-winning photographer Rose Eichenbaum as she guides students toward a more artful approach to image making. Rose imparts practical photographic knowledge with lessons learned from her personal investigation of creativity and the relationship between artistic expression and the human spirit as revealed in her published books and through her years as a freelance photojournalist. Sessions include visual presentations and discussions, exercises intended to nurture creativity, challenging shooting assignments, guided photo critiques and one-on-one mentoring sessions a well as developing strategic plans for future work based on student’s individual interests.

How does a photographer cope with the loss of an entire dimension? How does a photographer resolve the iron-clad restrictions that the frame places of his point-of-view? Students in “The Photographer’s Eye” will become aware of the challenges posed by cameras and lenses, learn about the solutions that photographers have developed over 150 years of time and trial, explore the specifics of camera vision in such areas as motion, time, and focus, and examine hundreds of pictures in order to better understand the frame itself.

Rose Eichenbaum (http://www.roseeichenbaum.com) is one of the most highly acclaimed photojournalists working in the arts today. Graduate study in dance at UCLA set the groundwork for a career dedicated to research, photographic documentation and investigation of artistic creativity. She is an award-winning photographer and author of two critically acclaimed books: Masters of Movement: Portraits of America’s Great Choreographers and The Dancer Within: Intimate Conversations with Great Dancers. Her books have been adopted as important educational resources by a number of major universities around the country. Eichenbaum’s dance and portrait photography have been exhibited from coast to coast including a three-year national tour hosted by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition service (2008-2010).

Thomas Alleman (www.allemanphoto.com) is a commercial, editorial and fine art photographer living and working in Los Angeles. During a 15-year newspaper career, Tom was a frequent winner of distinctions from the National Press Photographer’s Association, as well as being named California Newspaper Photographer of the Year in 1995 and Los Angeles Newspaper Photographer of the Year in 1996. The Long-Term Documentary Project with Sara Terry

Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the great pioneering photographers said, “To take a photograph means to recognize, simultaneously and within a fraction of a second‚ both the fact itself and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that give it meaning. It is putting one‚ head, one‚ eye, and one‚ heart on the same axis.”

For a documentary photographer—for any photographer who is interested in making deep, emotional connections through their work—few things are more fulfilling than working on a long-term project. In building a body of work over an arc of time, and in creating and developing relationships with their subjects, photographers learn to develop narrative structure, to become immersed in creating a body of work, to explore nuance and metaphor, and to develop a critical eye as an editor.

Topics include how to approach people, how to capture the essence of the subject’s world, the ethics and responsibilities of photographing people, and how to overcome very difficult situation, how to capture the right moments to tell a cohesive story, how to create compelling compositions, and which lenses to use to simplify backgrounds and/or to isolate your subject.

Sara Terry (http://www.saraterry.com) is an award-winning documentary photographer and filmmaker best known for her work covering post-conflict stories. She is a 2012 Guggenheim Fellow in Photography, for her long-term project, “Forgiveness and Conflict: Lessons from Africa.” Her first long-term post-conflict body of work, “Aftermath: Bosnia’s Long Road to Peace,” led her to found The Aftermath Project in 2003 on the premise that War is Only Half the Story. An accomplished speaker on aftermath and visual literacy issues, her many lectures include a 2013 TedX talk and appearances at The Annenberg Space for Photography.

This workshop focuses on how to produce a long-term documentary project, giving participants the skills needed to create images that are stylistically and thematically unified. The class will explore documentary versus more personal or artistic projects, as well as how to convey a point of view, how to edit work, and how to establish a market. The class begins with a discussion on topic selection and the importance of writing a project proposal. During the monthly group sessions, student work will be critiqued, giving participants the opportunity to learn and study other photographers’ projects. The goal is to complete a substantial body of work over a six-month time frame.

Documentary-style photography is done quickly, on the streets or in situations that are not controllable or perfectly static. It requires a high-level of technical knowledge about one’s camera and a willingness to adapt and react to changing circumstances. How does one learn to shoot under these variable conditions? That’s what this class will address, both in the field and in the classroom. This class will be both a shooting class, and a viewing/editing class. The LA Street Shooter’s Collective picks up where On the Streets in LA (formerly “Street Shooting 1”) left off, continuing the camaraderie of shooting together on the street, sharing your work, and getting feedback from each other. The course has been created specifically for those who have taken On the Streets in LA (formerly “Street Shooting 1”) and includes six shooting sessions and four classroom sessions over five months.

This six-month class is intended to teach students how to shoot candidly on the street, not only from practical experience, but also from studying historic and contemporary street photographers. We will meet once a month on Monday evenings, for lecture and critique, and once a month on Saturdays for a shooting session. (As a bonus, Julia also offers extra shooting dates each month, advocating the more you shoot, the better you will get.)

Julia Dean (http://juliadean.com) is a photographer, educator, writer, and executive director/founder of the Los Angeles Center of Photography. She began her career as an apprentice to pioneering photographer Berenice Abbott. Later, Julia was a photo editor for the Associated Press in New York. She has traveled to more than 45 countries while freelancing for numerous relief groups and magazines. Her extensive teaching experience includes over 35 years at various colleges, universities and educational institutions including the University of Nebraska, Los Angeles Valley College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Santa Monica College, the Santa Fe Workshops, the Maine Photographic Workshops, Oxford University and the Los Angeles Center of Photography.

Topics covered in class include: how to see light, how to find great backgrounds, the laws and ethics of shooting on the street, how to shoot candidly, how to capture the “decisive moment,” how to anticipate the future, how to approach people, how to shoot from the hip, equipment choices, lens selection, seeing in 3D, seeing in black & white, how to tell a story with a single image, and how to be brave, but careful. Many of the shooting sessions will take place downtown where Julia resides and spends most of her time shooting. We will shoot on Broadway, the Toy District, the Fashion District, the Flower District, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, the Arts District, on Olvera St., and in Union Station. If it rains, we’ll ride the Metro for a few hours. We’ll also shoot on the Venice Beach Boardwalk and on Hollywood Blvd.

For the past 17 years, Julia has concentrated on street photography around the world. For the past seven years, street shooting in downtown Los Angeles has been her primary focus. In 2015, her work was selected for a book published by Acuity Press and PDN magazine featuring 20 street shooters around the world. Julia and her work was also featured in Digital Photo Pro and Black & White Magazine UK in 2017.

Actors would rather visit the dentist than shoot new headshots, yet their first stop in Hollywood is getting new professional pictures. In this one-day workshop, students will learn how to create striking photographs that will help their clients get to work, and consequently help grow their photography business.

This six-session workshop will explore and create the many genres of still life photography through concept, lighting, styling and editing. The topics covered include product, white on white, black on black, chrome, nature and botanical, narrative, and an introduction to food photography. We will look at planning a successful shoot from idea to sketch to production and final edit. Lighting with tungsten hot lights, strobes and natural light will be covered, followed by demonstration and hands-on practice. Professional and fine art uses of still imagery will also be discussed. This class will allow you to explore and stretch your creative potential and help evolve your unique style and approach to shooting still life images.

Much more than just a picture of someone’s face, the headshot must work to capture an essence of the performer, as well as the casting director’s eye. Learn what defines a Hollywood headshot, and what representation and casting directors want to see in a photo. Students will discover how to direct and pull the best from their client, how to develop a personal style and their own image workflow, and how to manage and market their photography business. We’ll discuss working with a wide range of personalities and levels of experience, from those new to acting to accomplished performers with decades of experience. Other topics will include photo processing, retouching, natural light, studio light and mixed lighting.

With 15 years of experience working with performers, Brad Buckman (http://www.buckmanheadshots.com) quickly became known in Hollywood for capturing the essence of an actor in a photograph. He pioneered the use of digital photography for headshots a dozen years ago and then led the industry’s conversion to color. Brad has a unique technical aptitude, combined with an ability to put people at ease in a session. Rather than rely on a specific formula or a single style, he’s a true photographer who creates the best picture for his particular subject in that moment. Post Processing End-to-End with Victor Ramos

Patti and Lisa will discuss various ways to approach editing different kinds of projects and show examples to illustrate a variety of concepts and contexts. Following the presentation, the remainder of the workshop will be hands-on, with students editing and sequencing their prints from a chosen project. Student projects can be for websites, print portfolios, books or portfolio reviews. Patti and Lisa will provide feedback and suggestions on the process followed by a group critique of the final edited and sequenced outcome. Upon conclusion of the workshop, participants will have a clear vision of how to most powerfully present their photo project.

Students will leave the workshop with a matted and framed print of one of their images.

Printing and framing your own images can save you a great deal of money. On day one you will learn how to upload and catalog your images, apply keywords for later retrieval, rate them, use the basic Lightroom filters to build your vision of the image and make a print of the image. We will also discuss when to use Photoshop and other plugins when Lightroom is not sufficient. On day two you will learn how to construct an archival quality matt and how to mount the image in a frame. The framed image will be suitable to display in your home or in a gallery or museum. We will cover the tools and resources needed such as acid free rag matt blanks, matt cutters, acid free linen tape, etc., and where to find them.

Sarah Hadley (http://sarahhadley.com) grew up in Boston and studied art history at Georgetown and photography at the Corcoran College of Art. Her photography has been published in Black + White (UK) Magazine, F-Stop, Lenscratch.com, and Le Monde (Paris) and exhibited internationally at the Lishui Photo Festival (China), the Worldwide Photography Biennial Exhibition (Buenos Aires), the Ballarat Festival (Australia), Fotofever (Paris), as well as in galleries and museums throughout the US—most recently at the Griffin Museum of Photography, Boston, the Robin Rice Gallery, NY, Building Bridges, Santa Monica and the Loyola Museum of Art in Chicago.

This weeklong course for teens (ages 12-14) is designed to introduce students to the fundamental operations, techniques, and critical vocabulary of digital photography. Students will learn about the camera’s basic and advanced settings in an effort to make beautiful photographs, all while having fun. The class will cover technical information such as shutter speed and aperture, white balance, image quality, and compositional methods to help students develop their vision as budding photographers. Students will have the opportunity to practice their understanding of topics covered in lectures through daily photographic assignments.

By the end of the course, students will be comfortable using the various controls of their specific cameras and will gain confidence in the way they approach different subjects photographically. This class is open to students who own either a digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera or a point & shoot camera with a manual setting.

Erin Davis (http://www.erinmariephotography.com) is a freelance photographer specializing in travel and documentary photography, with years of experience shooting events and portraits. She started her career in the visual arts as a cinematographer and filmmaker, releasing numerous festival favorites and starting her own video and editing business. Erin’s work has been featured in several shows such as Viva La Muxer and Save Art: Picture the City. Currently she is preparing for an interactive exhibit at Gravy Studios in Philadelphia, where she is working with a local musician to create original tracks to accompany her photos.

Do you enjoy photographing your friends and family, or have you wanted to start? Do you want to take compelling photos of people? Do you like taking pictures and want to step up your skills to make beautiful images? Then this class is for you. Together in this handson workshop, we will explore different approaches to photographing people. We’ll study composition, light, style, and technique. Students will develop their artistic styles and technical skills in order to make portraits that capture a mood and tell a story.

This class is intended to teach students (ages 15-18) how to shoot a picture essay, from beginning to end, giving participants the skills needed to create images that are stylistically and thematically unified. The class begins with a critique of students’ current work as well as selects of older work. We will discuss topic selections, address the best ways to research ideas, generate viable situations, how to gain access to a particular story, and how to immerse ourselves in situations that can lead to intimate stories. As the class progresses, each student’s work will be continuously critiqued and evaluated. Kevin will also offer personal guidance for shooting with new skills and tools to make the work stronger yet.

This class is very hands-on, exploratory, and fun—we’ll be taking a lot of pictures! We’ll turn our classroom into a professional photography studio, and we’ll take field trips around Los Angeles to shoot at different sites. We’ll study all areas of portraiture, including fashion, street photography, editorial, and photojournalism. In this enthusiastic environment, the course’s framework will be strengthened through hands-on assignments, group critiques, and one-on-one guidance from the instructor. Develop confidence and immerse yourself in a week of portraiture while perfecting artistic skills to continue your journey as a talented photographer.

Students will gain insight about how to create a natural flow from one image to the next and create a beginning, middle and end to a project. Discussions about how to dig deeper into a project, how to gain the trust of your subject, how to become invisible to create more authentic imagery, and how to create visual clues to unify images will be addressed throughout the course. The goal is to complete a picture essay that could be used to help with college applications that require an art or photography project.

Her work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The Huffington Post, Scalawag Magazine, and Fotografia Magazine, among numerous other publications. Kat first learned photography in high school and studied documentary arts at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Before pursuing photography as a career, she worked as a community organizer and English teacher.

“Street Portraiture” is an art style where the photographer capitalizes on the raw beauty of the unposed subject creating a natural, unencumbered photograph. Technically the photographer is forced to move from the shadows to directly engage the subject transitioning from a former candid creation to a deliberate portrait.

Los Angeles is a massive, sprawling metropolis housing neighborhoods and communities of all shapes and sizes. There are remote woodsy enclaves, suburban tree-lined neighborhoods and concrete laden areas. In this class, students will take advantage of this melting pot of environments and turn their cameras on their neighborhoods in an effort to document their communities.

Explore travel photography in the City of Angels! Whether you’re visiting from out of town or a Los Angeles native, this class invites participants to view the city through the eyes of a traveler. With LA as our backdrop, we’ll study different approaches to composition, lighting, and techniques for successful travel, architectural, and portrait photography.

Photography is the art of looking at the same world as everyone else, but challenging yourself to see something new. This class will consider pre-existing ideas about photographs and push students to think about using images to not just record reality, but to present it as a unique experience. Designed to take the advanced beginning photographer to the next level of expression, the course focuses on analyzing and practicing the basic technical capture of photographs and using cameras to interpret the world around them. The class will weigh technology and creativity equally and begin to solidify the students’ understanding of the histogram, deliberate exposure for output, understanding of depth of field and how to simplify or complicate subjects through its use, and how shutter speed can lengthen or compress the representation of time in a single photograph. Students will be given examples of how photographers have met these concerns in the past and conceptual projects will be assigned using the methods learned. In order to create a proven method for success, students will draw on their own personal interests and histories and will keep a visual journal of their progress to track their creative process.

We’ll divide the week into shooting adventures around Los Angeles. We’ll visit famous architectural sites, classic tourist destinations, as well as lesser-known parts of the city. We’ll study composition, light, and camera techniques to create portraits of people and place. There will also be critiques and basic photo editing instruction. Hours of Operation

Special Guest Workshop Refund Policy A $75 administrative fee will be charged on all refund requests arriving 61 days or greater before the workshop start date. If the request arrives 31-60 days prior to the workshop start date, 50 percent of the applicable workshop fee will be retained. No refunds are provided for requests arriving 0-30 days prior to the workshop start date. All refund requests must be submitted in writing via email to info@lacphoto.org.

Administrative hours are (PST): Monday-Thursday, 10 am-6 pm; Friday, 10 am-5 pm; Saturday and Sunday-CLOSED. Office is closed on all major holidays.

If a student wishes to receive credit for a Special Guest workshop, he or she must do so greater than two months prior to the workshop start date. Within two months of the workshop start date, the option of receiving credit does not apply and students must adhere to the Special Guest Refund Policy.

Payment

Travel Workshop Deposit, Payment and Refund Policy

Payment is due in full at the time of enrollment.

The deposit, payment and refund policies for travel workshops to domestic and international locations will vary. Please visit the specific travel workshop website link found online at www.lacphoto.org or contact the Los Angeles Center of Photography at 323-464-0909 or email info@ lacphoto.org.

Note: Travel Workshops carry different payment policies. Please refer to the “Travel Workshop Deposit, Payment and Refund Policy” section.

Receipt of Payment For all online enrollments a receipt of payment will be generated and sent automatically to the student’s email account. For all phone, fax, mail or in-person enrollments, a receipt of payment will be generated and sent to the student’s email account within 24 hours of receiving payment. About one week prior to the class start date each student will receive a separate “Details” email that will include a welcome letter from the instructor, parking information, and what to bring to class.

Parking There is an abundance of parking alternatives at our location. For evening classes, we recommend parking at street meters (free after 8 pm). Sunset Blvd. offers a great place to find parking meters after 7 pm. OR, you may also park in the yellow commercial loading zones for fee after 6 pm. There is also plenty of free street parking two blocks south of us near Wilcox and Fountain.

Refund Policy

If you do not wish to find metered or street parking, there are many parking structures to choose from. The closest and most economical lot is a surface lot, located just one block north of us at 1637 Wilcox Ave. next to the US Post Office. The cost is $7 flat (varies on the weekends).

A $25 administrative fee will be charged on all refund requests*. The request must arrive greater than one week prior to the class start date. No refunds will be provided for requests arriving one week or less prior to the class start date. All refund requests must be submitted in writing via email to info@lacphoto.org.

IMPORTANT! Please pay close attention to the streets sign during the evening hours. If you street park north of Selma Ave. on Wilcox Ave. or Cahuenga Blvd., you will get towed on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Please avoid that area and park in a lot instead.

Upon receipt of a refund request, students will be provided the option of receiving credit toward the purchase of another class or workshop. If a student elects to receive credit, a voucher for the amount of the applicable fee will be sent to the student’s email address. The voucher will be good for two years from date of issue. Students are encouraged to keep credit vouchers on file for future reference. To redeem credits issued as vouchers, please contact the Los Angeles Center of Photography at info@lacphoto.org or call 323-464-0909. No administrative fee will be charged for students electing to receive credit.

Hotel Information We recommend Mama Shelter Los Angeles conveniently located on our same block, and just a minute walk to LACP. Mama Shelter Hotel is a recently renovated hotel that opened their doors July 2015. Credits

Studio and Gallery Rental

Credit vouchers may not be redeemed for refunds or cash back. Further, credit vouchers may not be applied toward travel workshops or private lessons. A student’s decision to receive credit in lieu of a refund is final and may not be changed at a future date. Students may elect to transfer applicable class fees toward the purchase of another class or workshop, limit of one transfer per class. All transfer requests must adhere to the refund policy noted above and/or in conjunction with Special Guest Workshop Refund Policy and Travel Workshop Refund Policy noted below.

The Los Angeles Center of Photography’s space may be rented for studio shoots and/or art gallery exhibitions. The space measures a total of 2,200 sq. ft. with a ceiling height of approximately 16 ft. Beautiful track lighting is mounted along the facility’s three separate spaces. Six surface walls painted flat white allow for up to 50 images to be displayed (not stacked). The space is equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, sound and digital projection capability. A wired hanging system allows for seamless and easy installation of artworks.
