WELCOME
WELCOME MICHAEL SIMONI, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome to the 2021 JDRF Promise Ball: Lights, Camera, ACTION. We are excited to be back in the ballroom this year with many of you. Your spirit, dedication to our mission and overwhelming support of our T1D community is stronger than ever! The progress made through JDRF-funded research wouldn’t be possible without the support of each person who supports our mission, and for that, we can’t thank you enough. Everyone has had to adjust and pivot their lives the past year and a half in a lot of different ways. Many people saw themselves or their family members being newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes during this time as well. The diagnosis can be overwhelming, stressful and cause even more uncertainty. That is why we need to come together, now more than ever, to make sure our T1D community has the support and resources it needs while also driving revenue to the research that will accelerate cures. Our Desert West Chapter proudly serves Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. We are all part of the JDRF family that wants to make the Promise Ball a success so we can be even closer to turning Type One into Type None. We could not do this without the amazing event leadership of Co-Chairs Juliaette Chamberlain and Kelly Springs-Kelley, our Corporate Chair, Kristi Hahne, and the rest of our outstanding Gala Committee. Thank you all for your hard work, creativity, determination, and incredible focus through so many challenges. You are truly amazing! Enjoy the event, celebrate, and thank you for your contributions towards making a meaningful impact in the lives of our T1D community. Michael

ELIOT L. KAPLAN Arizona Board President
Dear Promise Ball Guests, Like many of you, I know the daily challenges that type 1 diabetics face. I have lived with the same fear you have for your loved one’s life and health. From a young age I watched my dad struggle to balance his blood sugar levels using inaccurate urine sticks and animal insulin. Often, when his levels were low, I had to feed him sugar water or candy. We lost him too soon when he passed away at the age of 43 from a diabetic-related heart attack. My grandpa was also a type 1 diabetic. Sadly, I never knew him as he also passed away at 43 years old. In 2009, my daughter was diagnosed with type 1 and my nephew was diagnosed in 2015. JDRF’s mission is “improving lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat type 1 diabetes and its complications.” To make a difference, JDRF has two core objectives. The first is cures by restoring the body’s ability to make insulin and stopping type 1 before it occurs or providing insulin independence through replacement with insulin producing cells. The second objective is improving lives by keeping people with type 1 as healthy as possible until cures are found by advancing new T1D resources, technologies, and therapies. To achieve these goals, JDRF has over 500 active research grants around the world. This research is being conducted throughout academia, industry, and governments. My experience with JDRF spurred me to become involved with the organization’s board of directors. Over the years, I have seen the positive impact JDRF has on the lives of type ones and each time a family member has been diagnosed, it has renewed my determination to make a difference and assist JDRF in its mission. Thank you for joining us for the 2021 Promise Ball, an evening dedicated to raising funds for the critical research that keeps our loved ones safe and healthy until there are cures. We are hopeful that you will help us accomplish our collective purpose by contributing to Fund A Cure tonight, and allow JDRF to continue and enhance its important work! -Eliot L. Kaplan, Arizona Board President

JULIAETTE CHAMBERLAIN Event Co-Chair “Two of my three young sons have type 1, and I’m also motivated by the quote, ‘there is no such thing as other people’s children.’ I view everyone with diabetes, adults and children alike, as loved ones to work hard for. We are at a unique point in time with a major disease that we can actually find a functional cure for in our lifetime. Let’s do it!”
KELLY SPRINGS-KELLEY Event Co-Chair “My son Cameron was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was just 2 years old. JDRF is committed to advancing innovations that will ensure he lives a long, happy life, and there is nothing more important to me than that. I choose to support JDRF because I know that they are creating a better future for him - not only one that provides better outcomes, but one in which he is free from the constant burden and dangers associated with this disease.”
KRISTI HAHNE Corporate Chair “As a parent, we all desire to provide only the best for our children, including love, knowledge, support and happiness. As a mother of a child diagnosed with Type 1 at the age of 10, every day can be a challenge, as well as a true blessing. Since day one we were shocked and scared of what my son Nicholas’s life would be like. With continual funding, research and technology to advance new therapies for those managing Type 1, JDRF provides Nick with the most effective path forward so he can live his healthiest and most productive life.”

ABOUT JDRF
ABOUT TYPE 1 DIABETES Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease which causes the pancreas to stop producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults at any age. Living with T1D is a constant balancing act and people with T1D must regularly monitor their blood sugar levels, inject or continually infuse insulin through a pump, and carefully regulate insulin doses with eating and activity 24 hours a day. There is currently nothing you can do to prevent it and there is no cure. JDRF is on a mission to change that!
ABOUT JDRF
OUR WORK
JDRF is the leading global organization funding T1D research, improving lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. JDRF has invested over $2 billion in research to date and has made significant progress in understanding and fighting the disease.
From funding innovative research to advocating for government action to providing a support structure for our community, no other organization does more for T1D than JDRF. Our focus is on finding a cure; until we do, the advancements we’re making every day ease the burden of those living with the disease. No one knows where the cure will come from, but we continue to identify several paths that have the most promise. We invest in the early stages, allowing researchers to pursue innovative ideas and approaches that will lead to breakthrough treatments. 2021 JDRF PROMISE BALL GALA | 7.

FUND A CURE
WHYTE FAMILY Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and JDRF entered our lives eleven years ago when two of our sons, Cameron (then age 11) and Davis (age 9), were diagnosed. The day we realized it wasn’t just a stomach bug, we went from our home, to the pediatrician’s office, to the Emergency Room, then right to the Pediatric ICU. We rushed from one side of the ICU to the other as both boys were critically ill. After days of progressive improvement and then training, we left the hospital changed forever, armed with vials of insulin to inject Cameron’s and Davis’s little bodies and lancets to prick their fingers a dozen times a day to test their blood glucose levels. Seventeen months later, our daughter Charlotte was diagnosed. We now had three children with the disease that demanded hour-by-hour attention. Before T1D, we took for granted the simple ability to eat, play, and live our lives without ever considering the effect on the kids’ blood sugar levels. But Cameron, Davis, Charlotte, and millions of people like them live in a day-to-day, minute-to-minute balancing act that has serious shortand long-term complications. Too much insulin is deadly. Too little insulin brings the risk of long-term complications. Puberty, hormones, stress, exercise, carb-heavy meals, altitude changes, weather changes and later alcohol all bring added nuances to what would seem like a relatively simple dosage calculation. We believe JDRF is the organization that will change what it means to live with this disease – and eventually deliver a cure. We look forward to making this year’s event a very special night to remember. 12. | 2021 JDRF PROMISE BALL GALA
FUND A CURE
FUND A CURE JDRF’s ability to expedite and sustain meaningful research progress is made possible by tens of thousands of volunteers and donors worldwide who are mobilized through targeted initiatives such as our signature Fund A Cure campaign. By making a Fund A Cure gift you can be assured knowing 100% of your donation goes to the vital mission of JDRF. Fund A Cure provides JDRF with the dollars needed to move game-changing therapies out of the lab and into the waiting hands of the T1D community. Our goals are ambitious, but achievable, especially with the commitment of our generous donors. The next few years will be critical in our drive to dramatically transform the lives of people living with and who are at high risk for developing T1D. JDRF’s commitment is unwavering. We have the vision and the plan to make it a reality; we lack only the financial capacity. Now is the time to make a Fund A Cure gift to bring us closer to creating a world without T1D. Please join us and make this life-changing vision your legacy.
BY MAKING A FUND A CURE GIFT YOU CAN BE ASSURED KNOWING 100% OF YOUR DONATION GOES TO THE VITAL MISSION OF JDRF.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
JOANNE ZEOLI
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR My life’s work is determined by the quality of my contribution I give to the people who are in it. Volunteering at JDRF comes from my passion to help and give to others. My time, skills and background can make a difference by helping fellow diabetics or their families, and in turn it serves as a means of joy and self-fulfillment. I believe in JDRF’s mission to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and to improve the lives of millions of diabetics, through its research and improvements to technology. I’ve lived as a type one diabetic for 44 years and I am fully committed to JDRF’s cause. Volunteering empowers me to show others who are living with this disease that life does not need to be horrible and you shouldn’t be fully consumed by this illness. Yes, we have challenges, but it doesn’t have to completely control your life. Prior to moving to Arizona, I always volunteered for different events, but when I started to volunteer at JDRF Desert West, it was more personal and emotional for me because it was the first time in 44 years that I felt like I had support. I also realized I was creating a network of people who are coping with the same disease I have. My experience helped me understand that I can help others that may not be coping with this disease, as well as I am. When I am making phone calls for JDRF or volunteering at an event, I hear from so many parents and young T1D’s that they are worried about what their lives will be when they grow up. My usual response is they can have a normal, happy and healthy life, just like me and this disease should not stop anyone from fulfilling their goals and dreams! When I hear some relief in their voice or see it on their face, I realize that I am having a positive impact by volunteering. Helen Keller said “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” This means we need to continue to band together, help out and volunteer, to make the changes we want to see in our T1D community. I am extremely grateful for the JDRF relationships that I have made throughout the years. These special people have had such a positive impact on my life and the lives of so many that depend on them to work hard to find a cure for people with T1D. I knew when I volunteered I was helping others, but in fact, my actions to give was actually changing me. I don’t volunteer for accolades I do it because I have been so blessed in my life and I have a strong enthusiasm to always help and give to others.
