Hello!

My name is Jean-Baptiste Coger and I am a French Master’s level student in aerospace engineering desirous to learn more about user centered design. I believe that my technical background has a lot to offer to the design process: understanding and usage of technology, pragmatism, teamwork, solution finding, time management... I have had the chance to study and discover industrial design at Umea Institute of design

last year where I attended the one year course Industrial Design Introduction. This challenging experience opened my mind and made me realize the importance of the design process when innovation is at stake. But more importantly, it enabled me to combine creativity and technique into something tangible, making me want to dig more into this field. Welcome to my world and enjoy the reading!

BRIEF The aim of the project was to redesign the outdated foldable pruning saw made by the german brand Gardena. High focus on ergonomics and brand DNA were required as well as user testing and clear process.

When looking at ergonomics in a redesign process, nothing is better than a real test in situation. Therefore we decided to go to the woods and try the present Gardena saw.

The folding process and the button position forces us to hold the saw with our thumb and index instead of using our whole hand as a grip.

The project started with a thorough study of Gardena’s design values and design DNA, including concerns regarding colors, forms and user groups.

The semantics and the brand identity are expressed in the product in two ways: through its form and its graphics. Therefore I worked with these requirements form wise first and then graphic wise (colors,logo...).

ERGONOMICS

In order to keep the elbow, the wrist and the blade in line, the human body adopts a bad wrist position.


CONCEPTS

Get crazy, explore every idea no matter what.

Each concept is accompanied with a foam mock-up for further user testing.

IDEATION

The idea is to keep the blade, the elbow, the forearm as well as the wrist aligned, altogether with a correct wrist angle.

#2 // EASY FOLDING

In order to ease the folding process, I tried an alternative position for the button on the handle. Aware of safety issues I thought of a sliding button located in a recess, therefore not reachable when sawing

#3 // SAFE N’ BLOCK

What if ergonomics prevents you from holding the saw the wrong way? With this third concept, your wrist is blocked thanks a movable rotating part which comes over it when unfolded.


USERS TESTS When ergonomics is at play, nothing is more informative than users to help you choose a design direction. Thanks to a customized survey, I would take users’ comments into account about different aspects of the 3 concepts.

Pick a theme, a brand or a character. Then design a car interior that fits the latter by trying to vehiculate its emotion thanks to shapes, materials, colors... My chosen theme was «The fixie experience», supported by the bike brand Bertelli Bici. Tutors: Tony Catignani (UID) and Jasjit Singh (UID)


The Brand : Bertelli Bici Bertelli is an Italian bicycle brand that builds handmade one-of-a-kind fixed gear bikes. Every piece is fine-tuned by the owner Francesco in order to create a bicycle you won’t find elsewhere. The intricate combination of brand new parts with vintage parts found in flea markets led to unusual designs, yet strongly bound thanks to a very strict design language that built up over the years.

Minimalistic and elegant are the keywords of this straight forward gear shifter.

Moodboards were the ignition of the ideation process. I wanted to create something new, with new functionalities. What if I could transport my bike inside the car? This thought led to a gapped seat that would welcome the wheel. I dropped the idea to focus on the atmosphere that would emerge from the car interior : how would it relate to the fixie experience ? Saddle-inspired seat, pure forms, noble materials, feel for speed, tension in curves and an overall clean design were my answers. The evolution of the gear shifter shows a clear mindset change, from ergonomy to straight-forwardness. Laminated wood central console

Despite a first hard impression, the leather seats display a strong feeling of strenght and genuineness.

Simple surfaces, tension in the curves and noble materials are at the heart of Bici’s interior design. When aesthetics overcomes function in its most minimalistic form, the driver recalls the speed as well as the highend and trustworthy feeling of his elegant fixed-gear. Made for vintage fixie addicts yet very well 21st century accomodated, «Bici» uses bertelli’s design guidelines in order to create a unique car that you wont find elsewhere.

In order to validate or invalidate some parts of our design, we organized user tests with drivers coming from dfferent countries. We set up a car dashboard facing a screen in order to test out the following : - general concept - smartphone app - AR windsheld graphics - buttons position

Application usage

The route is a bi-colored path, depending whether the user already knows the way or not. Check the landmarks on the way then put away the phone to focus on driving.

Landmark spotting

When passing a landmark you know, press the button (left or right depending on the side) to save it. You can later customize it thanks to the app landmark management mode.

BRIEF The aim of this project was to design a toasting device aimed at an assigned target group. We were assigned a company as well. Our work was focused on research and ideation process. Tutors: Per Sihlen (UID) and Guido Hermans (UID)

IDEAS

In order to reduce the amount of crumb and ease the access to toasted toasts, let’s imagine a toasting device which moves around the toasts instead of having the latters sliding down.

Why having to deal with burnt toasts? My simple idea is to be able to use your senses to control the toasting. As a result I opted for an open glass toasting place : you see and smell during the toasting process.

BRAINSTORMING Group brainstorm sessions were set up for this project. As a designer, I enjoy these creative moments when everything becomes possible.

FORM STUDY FROM IDEA TO FORM I decided to explore different ways of making the product to move around the toasts : sliding, rotating....as well as different side views.

I wanted to express a certain speed and user friendliness thanks to an angled interface.

Inspiration from Philips actual and concept work.

FOAM MODEL At this stage of the process, 3D sketching is a great tool that I use a lot in order to validate/unvalidate or refine shapes as well as test the ergonomics of the product.

Future Meetings How will meetings in the next 50 years look like ? How can we provide a meeting environment that invites the attendees to take a bigger part, and make their ideas heard during a meeting? We created an interactive environment that assists everyone in the meeting and also makes it tangible for the attendees to take home afterwards. A model linked with a plausible scenario was set up in order to ease communication with the client.

The Mora Knife What if a furniture brand was to make a knife ?

The Mantis Chair An outdoor chair inspired by the praying mantis

The aim of the project was to capture the essence in form of a brand of our choice and translate it into a knife that would be produced by the well-known swedish knife manufacturer : Mora of Sweden. I chose the French furniture brand Cinna, that designs high-end furniture since 1975. The result is an elegant and classy knife, yet unusual thanks to its upright standing position.

After choosing an insect or a bug, we had to extract its characteristic shapes and curves in order to come up with product linked form-wise to the chosen bug. I chose the praying mantis and focused on its particular arms as well as the aerial feeling emerging from its thin body. The result is a concrete outdoor chaise lounge that could be used in community parks.


Interactive Game A quick workshop to find a use for the Kinect Part of UID’s Prototyping the Future week, I took part in a workshop about the Kinect. As a group, we made an interactive game mixing exquisite corpse and magnetic poetry. The user picks words thanks to body gestures in order to make a sentence. The latter is saved and creates an unexpected story published on a website.

Asked by a friend to create a logo for his school project about company creation. His concept was to ease barter among groups of people thanks to an online platform. I was contacted to give some feedback and imagine how all this could look like. The resul is a young, fresh and trustworthy logo as well as a couple of website screenshots.
