INITIAL RESEARCH The CANNTalk project were very interesting and insightful, especially I am initially thinking to talk about marijuana and the stigma around it for my final major project. I was a bit concern that this project might will be kind of my idea already, however Jordan convinced me that in my final major project I will be working on the topic with much more deeper research therefore it will born new idea for the project.

Ted Education Videos

IDEATION RESEARCH The ideation research comes first as part of inspiration where we were given the brief and it’s about making moving image in the lights of medical marijuana. And these video were main inspirations, not only I found them so interesting... I actually learned a lot from these videos. That was my initial thought wen given the brief, because this is in my opinion a very effective tool of learning on the internet and thought it is engaging for both adults and children. References:

CONTEXTUAL RESEARCH The contextual research were initially lead to search more on the medical marijuana and found more journals and medical papers with proper tests and experiment. And that was very illuminating for the projecct to continue with heavy foundation to inform the viewer about medical cannabis, and that was very important for Vale and I. To inform in a direct way, with engaging and approachable message. The book Stoned offers a lot of insights on research that was carried out on medical marijuana giving pros and cons on medical marijuana therefore offers a very objective perspective on the issue.

TIME CAPSULE | JOURNAL NO. 5

CONTEXTUAL RESEARCH The group were initially divided into 2 big groups in the cohort, however our group intently divide ourselves into smaller group that was arranged by Celine, moreover, I was finally assigned with Valentina because of our interest in the topic of mental health where we need to talk about Cannabis and Mental Health. The initial research we conducted by ourselves were searching on various different findings about medical marijuana and how it affects mental health. We found out that there were not much conclusive data that supports it is truth the cure, however it offers less side effects than anti-depressant.

TIME CAPSULE | JOURNAL NO. 5

PRIMARY RESEARCH Valentina found out about the CBD shop in London and thought we should visit, therefore, we went to the shop and asked around. To our surprise, they were very supportive and gave me insight to their customers. Such as, for example they told us that people who came to the shop mostly seeks alternative medicines for chronic pain and also to relieve some stress, anxiety and depression. The manager also mentioned that younger people are inclined to try freely whereas the older clientele wants to know more about the scientific facts and medical part.

COLLABORATIVE WORKING

We thought collaboratively we could work with an animator from MA VR. Therefore, we had a first meeting with her and she told us that she wanted to work with fluid animation because she thought itd be really cool and fun to tell the narrative. WORKING ON SCRIPT

I found script to be very very challenging, I wasn’t quite sure what to do- which information to put, which I need to edit out therefore this was quite a challenge for me, however, working with Vale taught me a lot on how to put the point across without being too elaborate. At first we thought we could talk about the psychosomatic symptomps of mental illness and how Cannabis can lessen that however, there were not much of studies that can support that. Moreover, there are much more studies on CBD and its benefit on mental illness, therefore, we decided to focus more on CBD and its beneficial property. We also decided to say it is important to say at the end of the video that medication and alternative are not meant to cure mental illness, it is just another alternative medication however maintaining healthy lifestyle is more more important. Valentina suggested that we should add questions in the script as part to clarify stigma and then have the answer as part of the clarification. TIME CAPSULE | JOURNAL NO. 5

Cannabis... Let’s look at Cannabis as a normal plant without any social connotation around it and just purely looking at it in a scientific lens. Cannabis, Hemp and Marijuana are different. Cannabis is a family of plants with two primary classifications Indica and Sativa. Hemp is a member of the sativa family, Let’s think of its like music— Cannabis is the genre; Indica and Sativa are the albums and in the Sativa album — Hemp and Marijuana are the two songs. Cannabis contains a variety of different compounds called Cannabinoids, and the most dominant are tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol. Both cannabinoids have shown to provide profound benefits to the human body; however THC induces psychoactive effects (the stuff that gets you ‘high’) while CBD does not contain psychoactive properties. And because of that psychoactive properties, Cannabis becomes illegal to digest, possess or to commercialise. However, countries like Canada, South Africa and several states in the U.S. have legalise its use for medical purposes. And what does that mean? It is not a secret that cannabis sativa have been used medically for over a millennia. Dr. Raphael Mechoulam who is an Israeli organic chemist found a breakthrough on his work of the chemistry and pharmacology of cannabinoids Two surveys were held on the medicinal use of cannabis in California - it showed that 15 - 27% of patients were prescribed it for mood disorders, depression, PTSD and ADHD. It is important to note that both CBD and THC has its own therapeutic properties, in a healthy environment under controlled conditions, THC - 5mg to 10mg smoked in herbal cigarettes was shown to produce relaxation with decreased subjective ratings of anxiety, tension and depression. In a clinical trial with 40 volunteers psychosis patients, a double-blind study were conducted to see the benefits of using CBD and antipsychotic drugs. Both medication helped the patients equally, however the group taking CBD enjoyed less side effects or no problems with movements, weight gain or hormonal changes - which are all the common side effects of antipsychotic medications. How does it work in your body? First of all, the human body has two receptors for cannabinoids - CB1 and CB2 receptors and the cannabinoids (for example CBD) will attached themselves into receptors in the body to produce their effects. When it attached to CB1 receptors it helps the human body to produce serotonin to elevate mood, it is also responsible to lessen pain response and increase appetite. To elevate mood is definitely proven to be helpful for depression, bipolar and anxiety patients.

But are they safe to take? Quite the contrary believe of CBD seems exceedingly safe. In fact, the FDA-approved use of CBD in epilepsy was first studied in children, which suggests that both children and adults can take safely. Typical doses of 10mg to 100mg a day shows no negative effects. In one study conducted where patients took 1,280mg a day did not see a problem at all. Does it cure mental illness? Like many other medication to treat mental illness, Cannabis does not heal mental illness. Maintaining healthy diet and lifestyle whilst adopting stress-relieving rituals and therapy will bring full healing to your body. And remember to always talk to your loved ones and visit your doctor when issues pop up.

SCRIPT EXPERIMENTATION

This was my initial script and this was very long for a video less than 3 minutes, even I thought so too. I can’t let someone read this, it’ll be too much information. We also experimented with few script until we ended up with our final script.

FINAL SCRIPT

Cannabis is Plant Amongst its hundreds of cannabinoids - THC and CBD are the most known ones. Both has significant therapeutic benefits. The thing is… THC is psychotropic— gives you the ‘high’ feeling… and CBD doesn’t; because it’s only psychoactive. That’s why CBD has the potential to help you. How? As a medicine Because World Health Organisation stated that mental illness is the 21st century epidemic And that means, 1 in 6 adults experienced mental illness So statistically, most likely it could you or your loved ones And to treat this, medication such as clonazepam and diazepam comes to play With many side effects Can CBD help you as an alternative? Let’s see how it works… You have your own Cannabinoid receptors - CBD will attach itself into them and helps your body to produce serotonin that elevates your mood Physically it’s like taking a warm bath, melting the tension away — comparing it to the feeling after an intense yoga or deep meditation session Will it cure mental illness? No. It’s amazing but this is not a miracle, it is just another molecule. But believe me, it makes a difference— I’m a 30 years old female who has not experienced a single anxiety free day in my adult life. For the first time in 15 years I feel better: happy, balanced. If you were me, would you take it? TIME CAPSULE | JOURNAL NO. 5

STORYBOARD After we sent the script to Claudia, Claudia sent us the initial story board, and there were some revision that we need to make such as the joint image need to be changed because it falls into the ‘cliche’ connotation of Cannabis, the eye as well is a bit tricky because it doesn’t connotate the word ‘Zen’ as it should be.

FIRST SEGMENT

This was the very first scene that Claudia sent us and this took her 3 weeks to do. That was when Valentina and I started to have doubt about the work and the timeline. We also thought that the background colour even though it looks sandy, the colour light brownish reminds of the colour of rolling paper of joint-- I think it is because of the relationship between between the background and Cannabis that gives the ‘Joint’ context.

VIDEO DRAFT After many times of back and forth with Claudia and several other animators, which we gave the deadline by 4 March 2019 to show the tutors, however, they have mentioned that they won’t be able to finish it until the friday of the week, so they sent us their draft on the Thursday (attached in previous page) which we saw and thought that this still needs a lot of work and we grew a bit worried that it will not be finished in time for the portfolio submission. Even though, the tutors have mentioned that we need to focus on the portfolio more; I still wanted to produce a work that I can tell about the journey and challenge my self within short timeline, therefore, I decided to create my own animation... bear in mind that my skill in after effects are mediocre at all as much as in Adobe static image making softwares (Ps, Ai or Id) so I am just experimenting in here really...

STORY BOARD To be honest if I have a little more time I would experiment on how to create depth of the video by having moving background, next time. And I would also experiment more on creating different types of visual I guess. but what I did was to create all the animation attributes (as I would like to call them) in Adobe Illustrator and animate them in After Effects, which I have learnt to do in my internship. And I thought that if I could explain it in the simplest way it would be effective and get the message across and the reference on the next page seems appropriate because it talks about mental illness and also uses really simple graphic and able to do in After Effects - I just need to spend a bit of time in it.

Mutually, Valentina and I decided that it’d be best to continue by ourselves because due to time Valentina wanted to focus more on her portfolio and that’s of course understandable because I know that she’s a bit worried about that more and for me I thought I could just challenge my self within the time frame, plus I personally don’t like not to deliver to a client because for me it’s a professional responsibility (whether it is in working or education environment).

FINAL VIDEO WIREFRAME The video I have to say it is very my style of graphic and illustration, it is insane sometimes. But I love it, Ruby told me that if I challenge my self to do it - it would reward me fully and it did. Because I’ve been wanting to do this for such a long time, but thought this might be too difficult for my mediocre skills in After Effects but I managed.
