HELLO!

I am Jeanette Jimenez, a graphic designer from the Bay Area. I recently graduated from the Visual Communications program of the School of Design at San Francisco State University. I aspire to create editorial and social media content for the lifestyle and beauty industries. My passion for design continues to grow everyday and my influences come from many places; mainly from the beautiful city of San Francisco and from my peers and associates. When I am not designing, I am practicing my lettering skills, listening to a Spotify playlist, or browsing the aisles of a Barnes and Noble.

COPPER MAGAZINE Editorial COPPER is a monthly magazine that focuses on on-the-rise artists. Musicians from multiple genres are featured in this publication so they have a chance to promote their music as well as giving people chances to discover new music. In this edition, the featured artist is Halsey, who has recently released her album Badlands.

Jeanette Jimenez

PROBLEM The magazine had to have unique name that has not been used for an existing publication. An original masthead would capture the intended spirit of the magazine. The protoype would contain a cover, table of contents, and a six-page feature.

SOLUTION Music is a big part of my life and am always trying to discover new bands. I decided to make my magazine as a way to help new bands promote their music and to get their name out there. I chose the word “COPPER” as the name because it reminded me of “underground” artists and it really fit with the type of music I listen to.

To narrow down the magazine name, we had to choose 10 adjectives and then narrow it down to our top two favorties. From there, ten different fonts were chosen to decide which one held the most typographic style we were envisioning for the publication.

SKETCHES

After figuring out the genre of magazine, what I wanted featured and the name, I had to create layouts and decide which typefaces I wanted. Sketches included what I wanted as pull quotes, and the different types of layouts I wanted for the table of contects, chapter opener and the main feature.

DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS Poster The United Nation’s Declaration of Human Rights is an important, international document for humanity. It states every basic right and fundemental freedom of all human beings are entitled to.

Jeanette Jimenez

PROBLEM We were given a pre-made grid and use it to emphasize different parts of the Declaration of Human Rights. We were only allowed to use two font families, use black and white with one of three accent colors and the final poster would be 22 in. by 30 in.

SOLUTION The parts I have chosen to emphasize were the parts that talked about all humans being born free, having the freedom to marry, have a free education, freedom to move and freedom to enjoy other countires without discrimination. I chose to shape it into the state of California and Mexico and showcased my family’s journey from Mexico to the Bay Area.

MYSTIC THE LABEL Logo Redesign Mystic the Label is an Austrailian based jewelery company. They create handmade jewlery out of precious gems and stones. Mystic incorporates clothing and housing accessories a few times a year.

Jeanette Jimenez

PROBLEM We had to take an existing logo and redesign it. We had to study the company and it’s brand in order to come up with a new logo that would fit the company.

SOLUTION I chose Mystic the Label, which is an Austrailian company that makes handmade jewlery. At the moment, it is only a web-based store, however, I created the new logo with the possibility that they would branch out to have store locations as well as expanding their product range.

38 MYSTIC LOGO REDESIGN

Jeanette Jimenez 39

INSPIRATION

Mystic uses a lot of crystals, moons and lotus petals. The company also uses ameythst clusters when showcasing their jewlery on their website.

40 MYSTIC LOGO REDESIGN

I brainstormed words that I thought went with Mystic the Label. It included colors, vibes, aimed demographics and materials.

Jeanette Jimenez 41

IDEATION

With my initial logo designs, I used moons and lotuses since they were the two main symbols Mytic seemed to like. Their original logo had a sort of “magical” vibe and I wanted to play off of it.

PVRIS Website Web Design PVRIS (pronounced “Paris”) was formed in 2012 by singer Lynn Gunn. The band plays a blend of dreamy electronica with dark, beat-heavy rock. The Lowell, Massachusetts-based group features form I Am the Fallen guitarist Alex Bainski and bassist Brian Macdonald. They released their debut EP in early 2013 and played in the Vans Warped Tour, joining the Rise Up Tour with Skylit Drive, Wolves at the Gate and For All Those Sleeping. In June 2014, PVRIS announced that they had signed with Rise Records, becoming the first female-fronted act on the famed metalcore label’s roster. Their debut album, White Noise, arrived in November of that year.

Jeanette Jimenez

PROBLEM To show what we had learned about HTML and CSS coding, we had to create an entire website from scratch. We had creative freedom as to what we wanted to create the website for.

SOLUTION I chose to create a website for the band PVRIS. Their music was filling my playlists and had helped me concentrate on homework throughout the semester. I used my basic HTML and CSS skills to add videos, photo enlargement and overall designing the website to make it seem like it could belong to the band.

54 PVRIS WEBDESIGN

Jeanette Jimenez 55

INSPIRATION

I wanted to stay true to the band while making my website. They rarely have any other besides black and white and I wanted to keep their color scheme.

56 PVRIS WEB DESIGN

Jeanette Jimenez 57

WIREFRAMES

Before I began coding, I created rough wireframes to decide what I wanted to have on each page, and how I wanted to organize it.

Jeanette Jimenez 59

FINAL DESIGN

The “Home page is dedicated to the latest news of the group. It is in a three column grid that is organized from newest to oldest. The vistor will be able to click on the post to enlarge it and read the short article.

60 PROJECT TYPE

The “Music” page allows the user to listen to snippets of their songs. The “Shows” page displays the band’s location, dates and venues. It leads to a link to buy the tickets.

Jeanette Jimenez 61

The “Video” page links to their music videos. The user can watch them from the site, or the video can lead them to their Youtube channel. The “Photos” page displays behind-thescenes images from their current tours. The pictures dispay as black and white but when the user clicks them, it turns into a full-sized color.

62 PROJECT TYPE

The “Shows page gives the vistor a list of upcoming concerts. The page has a link to buy tickets or notify the vistor that the concert has sold out. The page has the date, location and venue information.

Serene App Design The stress of school, everyday life and the prospect of life after college make panic attacks common among young adults. This research looks into what cause panic attacks and the different ways to deal with them. The final design will help inform young adults about panic attacks and provide ways to help.

Jeanette Jimenez 67

PROBLEM College students that experience panic attacks don’t know how to handle them and are afraid to seek professional help.

SOLUTION To design a mobile application that makes information on panic attacks easily accessible. The app will provide information as well as various exercises that will help deal with an attack.

RATIONALE A mobile application will not only simply explain panic attacks, but will also provide tips and exercises that will help students ease attacks and prevent future ones from happening. The application will also provide a way for students to focus and ground themselves through a music feature.

68 SERENE APP DESIGN

Jeanette Jimenez 69

Literature Review Panic attacks causes strong, physical reactions, even though no real danger exists. A panic attack last up to 20 to 30 minutes. 38.4% of attacks happen when alone, 23.1% happen with friends, 38.5% happen with family, and 69.2% were unexpected. Panic attacks have both physiological and cognitive effects. Physiological effects: rapid heart rate, chest tightness, shortness of breath, hyperventilation, sweating, trembling. Cognitive effects: ability to concentrate and process data becomes affected.

70 SERENE APP DESIGN

Jeanette Jimenez 71

SURVEY

83% know about panic attacks 14% know a little 3% do not know

75% have had a panic attack before

The data gathered from a facebook survey (64 participants) showed that 84% were familar with panic attacks and 75% of the participants have gone through a panic attack themselves. 71% of the people surveyed knew how to control an attack which left only 29% of people who did not know any self-help tecniques. Most of the tips that people shared through the survey were mainly focusing on breathing exercises.

72 SERENE APP DESIGN

82% know someone who has had an attack

71% know techniques on how to control one

These are the word maps formulated by the Qualtrics Survey I created and posted on Facebook. The top left image shows what goes through people’s minds when they think of the term “panic attack.” The bottom right image shows what people do the most when they are trying to stop a panic attack.

Jeanette Jimenez 73

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

During the research portion, finding tips on how to handle a panic attack were difficult. There were too many results and what came up were very dense. The information found was incredibly overwhelming and did not look very inviting. The books available to help with panic attacks also felt very dated. 74 SERENE APP DESIGN

INSPIRATION & CONCEPT DRIVERS More and more people have been raising awareness of mental health during the age of social media. They have been spreading the message that it is okay to feel a certain way, that they do not have anything wrong with them and that people who have anxiety, depression, or anything of the like are not alone. The more the awareness of mental health rises, and in this case the awareness of panic attacks, the more information floods the internet, making finding tips more difficult to find and overwhelming. The purpose of having a mobile application is simple: everyone is practically attached to their smartphones. The thought of quick access to any and all information we want is at our fingertips. A mobile app that gives out excercises and information on panic attacks will grant quick and easy access on the go.
