the
President’s Message President
Joanne Bentivegna nnn
First, I would like to thank everyone, our agency members, our company partners and our industry vendors and sponsors that continue to provide support to our organization on an annual basis. Without all of you, our organization would not be able to provide the resources and support to our membership and our communities. Since it’s the beginning of a new year at the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of Suffolk County, it is also time to ask ourselves what is going to be different this year. What more can we do for our members? This is something we ask each year when we first sit to down to plan in July and this year is no different. Our Executive Board has already met to begin the planning for the upcoming year. Our first Board of Directors meeting is taking place in July and we are all focused and excited about the upcoming year. First, we are committed to putting together meeting programs that will be based around what is happening in the insurance industry today, that will help you think differently and guide you in growing

the President’s Message cont’d your business for the future. We want our programs to be valued by our members from content and a time investment standpoint and will do our best to meet this goal. In addition to providing educational opportunities, we are going to engage our legislative representatives and company partners to assist us and our clients in the limited insurance marketplace we currently have on Long Island. We need to be concerned about the capacity available from our carriers and the ability of our clients to obtain and afford coverage in the future. This is applicable to both Personal and Commercial lines clients, so we all have to be engaged in these conversations and support our association in its efforts. Superstorm Sandy was one storm that affected all of us. There are homeowners and businesses that are still not back to normal 10 months after the event. What can our association do to improve the outcome the next time? This is something we are going to be discussing this year. Your input as a member on this topic is important and we want you to provide it. We are having different problems with the Contracting Market on Long Island. Coverage is becoming unaffordable and unattainable in some cases. Without the contractors we cannot rebuild – again, what can our association do to improve the outcome of this situation? I encourage all of you, for the benefit of our futures in the insurance industry, to become involved in the Independent Insurance Agents Association. Your participation and input at each of our membership meetings will be very important. When we respond to the issues that affect our industry in large numbers it is hard not to be heard. 4

OVERDRAFT Overdraft A NONPARTISAN DEFICIT DOCUMENTARY MADE FOR PUBLIC TELEVISION
The Travelers Institute partnered with WTVI-TV, the Charlotte, North Carolina public television station, and Susie Films to develop an award-winning, one-hour documentary that explores the depth and impact of America’s debt crisis at the federal and state levels. Made for public television, Overdraft highlights the growing U.S. deficit and its critical implications for individuals and U.S. economic competitiveness. About the Overdraft documentary
Featured experts
Now eclipsing $16 trillion, America’s debt is the number one economic crisis facing the country today. As such, the goal of Overdraft is to give viewers a better understanding of how the federal debt affects their daily lives, the choices that will have to be made to manage the problem and how they can participate in the ongoing economic debate. Through first-person accounts, the factors that have contributed to the debt and possible solutions are presented, including such major topics as entitlement programs, defense spending, tax reform, and the choices America’s debt forces on individuals and businesses.
Overdraft features the following key business, political and economic leaders:

IIAB of Suffolk County Honors John D. Reiersen
Since 2005, the Vincent A. Alba Lifetime Achievement Award
recognizes those individuals who for many years have demonstrated their commitment through exceptional service to the Big “I associations and the American Agency System as a whole. This year, the award was presented to John D. Reiersen, CPCU, CFE, CIE for his outstanding leadership in the industry for many years.
David M. Borg, John Reiersen & Jim Sutton 8
Dear David: I want to thank you and the Independent Agents & Brokers of Suffolk County for presenting me with the Vincent A. Alba Lifetime Achievement Award. It is an honor to be recognized for a lifetime of achievements and to receive an award named after such a true professional and nice person as Vinny Alba. It’s hard to believe I am entering my 50th year in the Insurance Industry, but I have a few years left to go God willing. The award is special to me as it comes from the Independent Agents of my home territory. The Big “I” was the most supportive industry organization when I was involved in getting new legislation and regulations to solve serious problems over the years. I am pleased to be involved with Kingstone Insurance Company and to continue to be a part of its growth over the next few years as we continue to provide homeowners and dwelling fire insurance markets to downstate New York. We will only write business through independent agents and brokers. Once again please convey my thanks to the Board of the Suffolk Big I for being selected for this wonderful award. Enjoy your summer and I hope to see you at CPCU meetings in the Fall.
Sincerely,
John Reiersen

Trusted Choice Consumer Portal Launches
New site offers online shoppers information, quotes and ability to
connect with independent agents.
At long last, the much-anticipated new TrustedChoice.com has officially
launched. The goal of the new website is to attract millions of insurance consumers to Trusted Choice®—and thus, drive strong growth for local independent agents.
This website will be a powerful new tool to help agencies appear in
insurance Internet searches by consumers. In addition, the new website will emphasize the value of choice that independent agents provide through an online rate comparison tool, so consumers can complete one-stop shopping for quotes from multiple insurance carriers.
Currently, consumers in Minnesota and Indiana can obtain comparative
quotes on auto and homeowners insurance on the site. Nationwide, the traditional “Find an Agent” feature matches consumers to local agents and has enhanced functionality to accommodate more specific consumer requests.
Agents have already provided plenty of great feedback that has helped
Project CAP make improvements. Project CAP wants to hear your concerns and ideas for site features that you would like to see in the future.
The goal is to continually improve functionality and balance everyone’s
concerns. Though rating is initially available only in Minnesota and Indiana, Project CAP will drive prospects to agents through the “Find an Agent” 30
Trusted Choice Consumer Portal Launches con’t feature nationwide, and therefore, it wants a critical mass of agents in all states.
Enrollment is open for all agencies that want to get register and update
their profiles. To get started, visit projectcapmarketing.com and sign up on the Consumer Portal by clicking the Get Now button. You will then be prompted to use your Big “I” username and password.
TrustedChoice.com “qualified” CAP agents are those that fill out their
agency profiles and provide a credit card for use when exclusive leads are delivered to your agency. These agencies are listed at the top of the agency locator for your geographical area.
All Trusted Choice agencies are listed on the agent locator, but CAP
agencies are listed at the top because they are operating in real time and providing updated agency profiles for consumers.
Agencies can learn more by attending a Project CAP tutorial webinar,
which is held each Tuesday at 11 a.m. ET.
If you need assistance or have any questions, contact Project CAP at
855-372-0070 or support@projectcapmarketing.com.

Why You Should Recommend a Single Source Restoration Company by Kimberly DeGraff of Belfor Property Restoration
Over the years more and more restoration companies have come into
the market to assist insurance companies and agents. With that said not all restoration companies are created equal. What does that mean? Some only offer emergency services, i.e. Water extraction, drying or cleaning up soot and mold. That’s all well and good, but often times there are structural damage to the home or building. What then? These emergency service only companies will not return to re-stretch the carpet or patch those walls. They will recommend a builder. If you call in another restoration company to handle the second half of the job, it gets turned down. There’s a liability when the second company tries to come in not knowing how the EMS was conducted. What good does that do for you or your insured?
When you recommend at single source restoration company- one that
will do the emergency services and the re-build, you walk away happy. Less work for you, only one call was made. Also your insured does not have to deal with multiple companies. After an emotional, unexpected loss, you and your customer have the peace of mind that they are going to be taken care of. Your insured will not have to compile a bunch of estimates or search high and low for all the other components to get back into their home or business. Plus
33
Why You Should Recommend a Single Source Restoration Company con’t while the job is going on, your insured has one project manager who will handle the project from start to finish.
Relationship is so important. Form a relationship with your restoration
company! They can assist you when you are working with an adjuster you are not familiar with. This is our world - it’s in everyone’s best interest for a claim to go smoothly. We want you and the insurance company happy. Because we work with many adjusters often, we know how they prefer their paperwork. This is 34
Why You Should Recommend a Single Source Restoration Company con’t another added benefit for you.
A company like Belfor Property Restoration has the capital to get a
project started. We can begin the rebuilding process without having received one dime. This minimizes down time for your insureds.
The next time you get a claim, think about where it is going and who
will take the best care of your client.
