SPRING 2016
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - A YEAR IN REVIEW.
[1]
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
This has been a very frui/ul year for our associa3on,
beginning with our June 2015 installa3on dinner. Among the fes3vi3es that evening, we awarded three $2,500 scholarships to excep3onal students aDending St. John’s School of Risk Management. With the help of our sponsors, NarraganseD Bay Insurance Company, Na3onal General Insurance Company and Safeco Insurance, TriCounty is able to reward young talent and encourage careers in the insurance industry.
Another $5,000 went to two high school gradua3ng
students for outstanding work in community service and for the best wriDen essay on a safety topic. These scholarship programs Peter Phillips President
have been in effect for a number of years and our associa3on plans to con3nue offering them for years to come….
October, 2015 brought more than 200 guests to our first
‘Oktoberfest’ on a beau3ful evening at PlaDduetsche Park Biergarten where we enjoyed wonderful Bavarian food, lively music, entertainment and raffles. Proceeds from our 50/50 drawing enabled TriCounty to donate $5,000 to the Susan G. Komen breast cancer fund. Watch for the announcement of our second Oktoberfest on October 6 of this year…..
One of my proudest moments was when we delivered a
$10,000 check to the staff at Ronald McDonald House of Long Island last winter. This money was raised by your generosity in aDending our Cabaret post holiday party in January, 2016 where we had another record turnout.
In keeping with our tradi3on of offering educa3onal
programs to our members in addi3on to networking events, we

combined with members of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of Suffolk County for a luncheon mee3ng on April 11, 2016. Our guest speaker was Casey Preston, CEO of Stratosphere Marke3ng Solu3ons in California. The topic was “Marke3ng to the Modern Consumer” Casey, a specialist in this field, did an excellent job explaining how aDendees can make the most of online marke3ng presence. Guests were taking lots of notes during the program and the following Q&A session.
As we do each year, on April 13, a TriCounty con3ngency
went to Washington DC to join other agents around the country at the Big “I” Na3onal Legisla3ve Conference. The purpose of this conference is to meet with congressional leaders to present Big “I” posi3ons on cri3cal topics. This year, focus was on Flood Insurance, Health Care, Insurance Regulatory Reform and other maDers important to our membership. The group had many successful mee3ngs as you will read about in this issue of TriLines. My thanks to Neil Levy, James Bas3an, Stephen Folan and Evan Portnoy for represen3ng TriCounty this year.
Locally, on April 20, our legisla3ve team met with Senator
Jack Mar3ns at his office in Mineola. The Senator serves on the the NYS Insurance CommiDee and was very cognizant of the topics we brought with us for discussion. We plan to conduct more mee3ngs of this type in the TriCounty region throughout the years to come.
The TriCounty administra3ve year is in its closing stages and
will be renewed with officers moving up the ladder, directors moving into officer posi3ons and two new directors joining the team. James Bas3an was installed as the associa3on’s new

president to succeed me. This all happened on June 1 at Chateau Briand at our annual installa3on dinner.
In addi3on, we honored Dick Poppa, IIABNY’s president and
CEO at this event. Dick will be re3ring the end of 2016 and moving back to his na3ve state of Indiana with his wife, Kim. Dick brought talent, experience and insurmountable energy to IIABNY and its locals and is a highly respected na3onal leader. He will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of dealing with him.
It has been a privilege and a pleasure to serve as your
president this past year. We have an enthusias3c team of officers and directors eager for new ideas and we are always looking for more volunteers to serve on commiDees or join our Board of Directors. I plan to stay involved with the associa3on and invite you to contact me at any 3me.

IN MEMORIAL We are sorry to announce the recent passing of Al Nussbaum a long time Big “I” agent. Before retiring to Florida, Al was a partner at B&B Coverage Corp in Valley Stream and also served on the Board of Directors of the Independent Insurance Agents Association of Nassau County in the mid to late 90’s.
He was well know in the insurance
community and passionate about issues he believed in. Al had many friends and will be sorely missed.

2016 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS! by Eileen Black
The TriCounty Independent Insurance
Agents Association has again presented our two prestigious memorial awards. As independent insurance professionals, who are involved in our local communities, we are presenting two awards to qualifying seniors attending high schools in these communities.
The “JOEL S. POLLACK” Memorial
Scholarship. On Memorial Day weekend in 1998, a drunk driver tragically killed one of our esteemed members. Joel was 35 years of age and was a highly regarded member of our industry and believed strongly in continuing education. Tri County established an educational scholarship in his honor to assist a graduating high school senior in furthering his or her education.
Tri County has awarded a $1,000 in scholarship to Blanca Franck, from
Grover Cleveland High School in Ridgewood NY to be used towards expenses at Marist College.

OUR 2016 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS ARE UP AND
The “STEPHEN T. DOOLEY COMMUNITY SERVICE” Scholarship was set up
to honor Stephen Dooley. Steve was a major influence in the formation of the Tri County Association. He was president of our organization, a highly respected insurance professional and very active in his community, mostly as a volunteer in charity and youth activities. Steve died from cancer in February 2005 and we thought there was no finer way to honor him than to establish an ongoing scholarship in his memory, in the areas he cherished and worked so hard in.
TriCounty has awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Amanda Cupo from Seaford
High School, Seaford, NY who exemplifies the same caring for her community to use towards expenses at Queens College.

I’m just a Bill… by Neil Levy
The extent of my knowledge on legislation
comes from “School House Rock” and episodes of “West Wing.” Needless to say when I was asked to attend the Big “I”’s National Legislative Conference in Washington D.C. I was more than a bit intimidated. There was absolutely no reason to be! There were always more experienced members in the meetings and we had been so prepared to speak on the various topics. Even though I was an observer in most cases, it was one of the most interesting things to be a part of. I met a number of my TRICOUNTY brethren before the initial meeting where we caught up with a number of agents in Suffolk County and elsewhere around the state. The initial meeting was on Wednesday afternoon where the Big “I” presented all of the issues that we would be speaking to our local congressmen and women about the next day. The Big “I”’s presentation included a legislative panel that discussed the issues in depth and the Senate and House Bills that focused on these issues. We were provided cue cards (colored index cards) with all the talking points for both the Senate meetings and the Congress meetings.
There were cocktails and dinners with many Big “I” agents that evening and it
was especially interesting to learn more about issues that face the insurance industry that many of us in TRICOUNTY don’t put much thought into. Crop

Insurance, Earthquake Risks, etc… although in the meeting the next day before we “hit the hill” Charles Schumer mentioned that New York State is the 3rd largest state as far as agriculture with Suffolk County and its wineries being a large contributor. Who knew?
You can’t be in Washington D.C. without things getting political, and the next
day’s meeting did not disappoint. Before we all went to the Senate and Congress buildings we got to listen to Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Tim Scott (R- South Carolina) as well as various other speakers and awards. The next few hours were meetings we had scheduled with our various Congressmen/women and Senators. Many of the meetings were with actual staff members with varying familiarity to the issues we were discussing. I found the best discussions were where we were educating them on insurance versus the discussions that were based more upon talking points and what bills to support or not.
In a politically charged 2016 this trip gave me a little insight into the inner
workings. Like when Toto pulled back the curtain. Like many of us, I fell into the insurance industry but seeing thousands of passionate insurance industry veterans descend on Capitol Hill and witnessing our democratic process in action was truly inspirational and urge you to join us next year.

Digital Marketing by Adam Erickson
By now you have undoubtedly heard the term
Digital Marketing. Although many agencies have implemented digital marketing strategies, it is surprising how digital marketing is still such a mystery to most insurance industry professionals.
It has been proven in countless studies that a
very large percentage of insurance seekers begin their search online. Why the resistance by insurance agencies in developing a sound digital marketing strategy?
To help agencies get a grasp for what can be
overwhelming at times, TriCounty IIAA and IIAB Suolk held a joint meeting on 4/11/2016 at Jewel Restaurant in Melville.
The Guest Speaker was Casey Preston of Stratosphere Marketing Solutions.
Stratosphere is a full service web design and digital marketing agency specializing in the insurance industry.
Casey’s presentation provided useful information to agencies just beginning to
enter the digital world. He laid out simple beginner strategies that could be implemented as soon as you arrived back at your oďŹƒce.
We all know the importance of being visible online to the modern consumer. This
special luncheon helped with just that!

First Robot-Run Insurance Agency Opens for Business by Alex Giraldo

This Insurance Journal article made for
some giggles and laughs in my office on April 1st. I giggled, because to be very honest, this doesn’t seem too funny when you can actually see it happening. I read somewhere a while ago that the best technology is the one that works and gets out of the way so we can advance humanity. Artificial Intelligence is well on its way and it’s going to be up to us to embrace and learn all of its nuances as it pertains to our fields professionally and personally. We shouldn’t shrug off every article that deals with what we believe to be “science fiction” because it’s not fiction anymore, its pure science. Amelia is one of the most interesting examples I have come across because it’s AI that is being developed to handle call center type of inquiries. I have included this short BBC video below because it’s powerful to me. It speaks to how far we have come and how much we have yet to see and learn.f being visible online to the modern consumer. This special luncheon helped with just that!

In 2012, rear-end crashes killed 1,705 Americans and injured 547,000 in the United States. About 87 percent of those deaths and injuries might have been prevented or lessened if vehicles had a collision avoidance system – because they were linked to driver inaDen3on, researchers found.

Google to Shut Down Online Insurance Site, Partners Say It appears Google Compare’s grand experiment in online comparison shopping for auto insurance is dead – for now at least. Insurance Journal has learned that two of Google Compare’s major partners were told today that the giant tech firm is shutng down its online shopping comparison undertaking. Top Homeowners Insurance Claims Weather incidents account for more than half of all homeowners insurance claims, with wind, pipes freezing and burs3ng, roof and flashing leaks and ice dams among the major causes of home damage during weather events. Fire-related claims are the most expensive, however. That’s according to The Travelers Companies Inc., which released informa3on iden3fying the most common and costliest homeowners claims based on a review of its U.S. homeowners insurance claims made from 2009 to 2015. • The five most common causes of home claims are: • Exterior wind damage – 25 percent of all losses. • Non-weather-related water damage (e.g., plumbing or appliance issues) – 19 percent. • Hail – 15 percent. • Weather-related water damage (e.g., rain, mel3ng ice, snow) – 11 percent. • Thez – 6 percent.

Big “I” Applauds House Passage of Flood Market Parity Act Legislation would ensure private policies will count as continuous coverage under NFIP terms. WASHINGTON, D.C., April 28, 2016—The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (IIABA or the Big “I”) today applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for passing H.R. 2901, the “Flood Insurance Market Parity and Modernization Act,” by Reps. Dennis Ross (R-Florida) and Patrick Murphy (DFlorida) by a 419-0 vote. This bill clarifies that state regulators have authority over private flood insurance and ensures that policyholders can return to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) without losing their grandfathered status or subsidy if they had previously left the program and obtained coverage in the private market and that coverage no longer meets their needs. This is an important safeguard for consumers. “The Big “I” supports a long-term extension of the current NFIP and believes that the private market has a limited role to play as a complement, not a replacement, to the NFIP,” says Charles Symington, Big “I” senior vice president for external and government affairs. “This bill strikes the appropriate balance of private market involvement with the current program.” H.R. 2901 will help provide more choices for consumers when they purchase flood coverage for their home or business as the legislation clarifies that a private flood policy can satisfy the mandatory purchase requirement for flood insurance. ”The Big ‘I’ thanks Reps. Ross and Murphy for their leadership on this important legislation and looks forward to working with Congress as they consider a full reauthorization of the NFIP ahead of its Sept. 30, 2017 expiration,” continues Symington. “We hope the Senate will consider its companion bill, S. 1679, “The Flood Insurance Market Parity Act,” by Sens. Dean Heller (R-Nevada) and Jon Tester (D-Montana) soon.” [23]

Big “I” Praises House Action on Department of Labor Fiduciary Rule Resolution seeks to stop fiduciary rule from taking effect. WASHINGTON, D.C., April 28, 2016 — The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (IIABA or the Big “I”) praises the U.S. House of Representatives for passing H.J. Res. 88, sponsored by Reps. Phil Roe (RTennessee), Charles Boustany (R-Louisiana) and Ann Wagner (R-Missouri). The resolution is part of an effort to halt a recently released Department of Labor (DOL) fiduciary rule under the Congressional Review Act. “The fiduciary rule places new restrictions on Big ‘I’ members who offer retirement advice related to most IRAs and 401(k)s, as well as some HSAs,” says Charles Symington, Big “I” senior vice president of external and government affairs. “The rule, while arguably well-intentioned, will make retirement advice more costly and complicated, particularly for the middle class leading to less consumer choice.” The final DOL rule, which was released on April 6, tightens conflict of interest rules under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act. The DOL did make some changes to simplify the rule in its final proposal, however, substantial concerns remain that the rule will significantly increase compliance costs, oversight costs and legal exposure for insurance agents. The increased costs and exposure will likely act to limit access to advice for those consumers who need it most. "This harmful rule is expected to start taking effect in April 2017 and be fully implemented by Jan. 1, 2018, barring congressional or legal action,” continues Symington. “The Big ’I’ is grateful for the House’s swift consideration of the resolution and urges Senate action.”
Founded in 1896, the Big “I” is the nation’s oldest and largest national association of independent insurance agents and brokers, representing a network of approximately a quarter of a million agents, brokers and their employees nationally. Its members are businesses that offer customers a choice of policies from a variety of insurance companies. Independent agents and brokers offer all lines of insurance—property, casualty, life, health, employee benefit plans and retirement products. Web address: www.independentagent.com.

When Do You Use Contests and SPIFFs to Motivate Your Sales Force? by Dan Mageau Consultant at Optymyze Over the years, we have received many questions from leaders concerned about the success of their sales incentive programs. Our experts have turned the answers into a series of blog posts – Sales Ops FAQs. Here’s one of the latest questions we got. Q: Is there a perfect recipe for contests and SPIFFs? When should we boost our sales incentive programs with contests and SPIFFs? A: Contests and SPIFFs are like diamonds – their rarity enhances their value. To add them to your sales incentive programs, start by analyzing your business needs. Is a new competitor entering the market? Are you launching a new product or, on the contrary, struggling with a lagging one? In cases such as these, your organization may gain value from contests and SPIFFs. These sales incentive programs can help create excitement in your sales organization. But be careful not to let them overwhelm the impact of your core sales compensation plan. Overusing them may create strategic misalignment between your plans and your objectives. SPIFFs and contests can dramatically change the “effective weights” of the overall comp package, motivating reps to oversell one product while neglecting others. As expected (and intended), reps will devote their time where they can make the most money. Before rolling out any SPIFF or contest, be sure to understand how a rep will change their allocation of selling time and see if it will be in line with your strategy. How to avoid misalignment To mitigate the risk of misalignment, many top sales organizations plan their total annual comp budget and associated allocation of target bonus across products knowing that later in the year they will run a SPIFF or contest, even if they don’t know the exact details. This lets them get the benefits (excitement and focus) of the SPIFF while being careful to maintain a close alignment between the allocation of target bonus across products and their strategic objectives. One of the biggest challenges organizations encounter when running contests and SPIFFs is the compensation plan changing in the middle of the contest. It can be tough to ensure the goals of the comp plan align with the goals of the contest when the [27]
comp plans are in flux. The approach we had taken in the past is to leave the main yearly contest aligned with the old comp plan (for consistency) while launching smaller quarterly contests that are more in line with the new updated plan. Besides the yearly contest, quarterly SPIFFs and contests motivate reps to sell specific products, services or extra features. Sometimes, reps lose motivation for the yearly contest if they have a bad quarter, so a fresh contest wins back their engagement. Getting the best ROI It’s also important to define expected outcomes of your contest/SPIFF and to know how you will measure them for the best possible ROI. From my experience, contests are more effective with practical prizes. These allow sales reps to have a tangible representation of their reward. If in doubt when picking the right prize, you should know that 51% of people remember travel prizes longer than other rewards. An exciting trip or a city break for two is something they would fight for more than extra money or gadgets. As Charlie Warner notes in Media Selling, trips can be promoted well too, they can be glamorized, and people love to fantasize about them. How are you introducing contests and SPIFFs in your sales incentive programs? What challenges do you encounter? I will be more than happy to answer your questions in the comment section below. This article was originally published on the Sales Operations Insights blog.
