HEARD AROUND TOWN
The FBI has warned healthcare providers their
cyber security systems are lax compared to other sectors, making them vulnerable to attacks by hackers searching for Americans’ personal medical records and health insurance data.
Health data is far more valuable to hackers on
the black market than credit card numbers because it tends to contain details that can be used to access bank accounts or obtain prescriptions for controlled substances.

TRI COUNTY SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Ken Hehir, IIAANC past president with award winner Lindsey Haynes and South Side High School guidance councilor Joanna Zweben
Two Tri-County scholarship programs were started many years ago in honor
of two outstanding leaders of our organization who had died long before their time. Each year, the Joel S. Pollack Memorial Scholarship offers $2,500 to a high school graduating student for the best essay in a chosen topic usually dealing with driver safety. The award is sent to the winning student’s college after enrollment to assist with education and relating expenses. This year, the award went to Chelsea Hroch a graduate of Farmingdale High School.
The Stephen T. Dooley Community Service Scholarship award is presented to
a graduating student who has performed exemplarity community service during his or her years in high school. This award, also for $2,500, is mailed to the winner’s

chosen college for educational expenses after enrollment. The 2014 recipient was Lindsey Haynes of South Side High School. Certificates of appreciation were delivered to both high schools for presentations at the students’ awards ceremonies.
These scholarship programs have been so well received over the years
that the TriCounty Board of Directors expanded to another area of education. For the last 6 years, an additional scholarship has been awarded to the ‘best of the best’ students at St. Johns School of Risk Management in NYC. Five top students in either the junior or senior classes are chosen by the St.Johns education director and 1 or 2 winners are selected by the TriCounty education committee. Criteria includes a minimum GPA of 3.0 and majoring in insurance or

Jim Sutton Takes Office as IIABNY Board Chair James D. Sutton, CPCU, AAI, CIC led the list of officers elected yesterday by IIABNY members. The association installed Sutton as chair of the board at its 132nd Annual Business Meeting, held at The Hyatt Place in Riverhead. Members also elected and installed new regional and district directors for the 2014-2015 term.
Sutton, CEO and president of James F. Sutton Agency
Ltd. in East Islip, has served IIABNY as its chair-elect, secretary-treasurer and as a regional director representing the association’s members in the New York City metropolitan and suburban parts of the state. He has also served on the association’s Independent Agent Branding Committee, Audit Committee, a committee to further the independent agent Trusted Choice ® brand, and on a committee to raise funds for the InsurPac national political action committee.
Sutton is a past president of the IIAB of Suffolk County and the Downstate
Insurance Associations Council, as well as a past chair of the New York/New Jersey NorthStar Agents Council for Encompass Insurance. Has also been an active volunteer in his community, with leadership roles in the Rotary Club of Islip, the Islip Arts Council, the East Islip Chamber of Commerce, the Community Association Institute of Long Island, and local parochial schools.
In his acceptance speech, Sutton warned of growing threats against agents
and brokers, including: • An onslaught of advertising by insurance companies that sell without the involvement of agents
[35]
Jim Sutton Takes Office as IIABNY Board Chair con’t • Increasing merger activity • The popularity of purchasing insurance via the Internet • Insurance companies selling through multiple distribution channels
“The local agent and the independent agent channel are undergoing
dramatic change and not all agents will survive the transition,” he said. To counter these threats, he encouraged independent agents and brokers to support the Trusted Choice® brand. He also urged them to participate in Project CAP, an effort to help agents market through the Internet.
Sutton also discussed political and regulatory issues on the horizon, such
as the looming expiration of the federal Terrorism Risk Insurance Program, the precarious market for homeowners insurance in coastal areas, and ongoing problems with certificates of insurance. “IIABNY’s advocacy efforts are another prime example of why we can’t go it alone,” he said. “It is critical to our livelihood that the association is there in Albany and Washington to represent us.”
Other officers elected and re-elected to IIABNY’s executive committee for
one-year terms included: • R. Todd Rockefeller, vice-president of DeRosa, Rockefeller, Sohigian, Werdal, Inc. in Harrison, elected chair-elect. • Jack Smith, CPCU, ARM, CIC, executive vice president for the William A. Smith & Son agency in Newburgh, elected secretary-treasurer. • Michael Vanderwerker, president of Assured SKCG, Inc. in Peekskill, New York to represent the New York City metro and suburban areas; [36]

Ask Tim Tim Dodge, IIABNY 315.432.9111 x229 tdodge@iiabny.org
H
ere are answers to two commonly asked questions from IIABNY members:
Is it legal for me to pay a referral fee to someone who doesn’t have an insurance license? New York law allows you to pay a referral fee to someone who doesn’t have a license if: - That person does not discuss policy terms and conditions with the person being referred, and - The amount of the fee is not dependent on the sale of insurance. I suggest you base the fee on the number of referrals, number of employees, type of business, or anything other than whether you made the sale.
When can I charge a service fee? New York law allows you to charge a service fee when you are acting as a broker for that particular transaction. Examples of this are when you place a WC policy with the NYS Insurance Fund, a property policy with the NYPIUA, or any policy with a wholesale broker or managing general agent. You must explain the amount and nature of the fee in a memo signed by the person who will have to pay it. However, you may not charge a fee when you are acting as an agent for a particular transaction. For example, if you are a Travelers agent and you place a policy with Travelers directly, New York law does not permit you to charge a fee. Grilling Safety From The Insurance Information Institute Americans enjoy more than three billion barbecues each year. But barbecuing can be dangerous, even deadly, if you are not careful. The following tips can make your grilling experience safer: 1. When ready to barbecue, protect yourself by wearing a heavy apron and an oven mitt that fits high up over your forearm. 2. With gas grills, make sure the gas cylinder is always stored outside and away from your house. Make sure the valves are turned o when you are not using them. Check regularly for leaks in the connections using a soap and water mix that will show bubbles where gas escapes. 3. Barbecue grills should be kept on a level surface away from the house, garage, landscaping, and most of all, children. 4. For charcoal grills, only use starter fluids designed for those grills. Never use gasoline and use a limited amount of starter fluid. If the fire is too slow, rekindle with dry kindling and add more charcoal if necessary. Never add more liquid fuel or you could end up with a flash fire. 5. Be sure to soak the coals with water before you put them in the trash. 6. Always remember that grills remain hot long after you are through barbecuing. In Case Of An Emergency If you get burned, run cool water over the injury for 10–15 minutes. Never put butter or salve on burns because they will seal in the heat and cause further blistering. If you receive a serious burn the sooner you get medical attention the better.
