This is my first message since the TriCounty IIAA installation dinner at the Fox Hollow on June 5th. What a night it was with over 200 industry professionals arriving for an hour and thirty minute outdoor cocktail reception under sunny skies and mild June temperatures. The program which followed, including the installation of officers and directors, the scholarship and industry awards and other festivities ended with a sumptuous dinner. It was a beautiful evening where people mingled, networked and enjoyed themselves, while supporting, honoring and promoting our industry. The theme this year is “Make a Difference”, and the planning process has already begun. We intend to accomplish a number of goals in the next twelve months which will require an intense focus by members of the board. But make no mistake, this TriCounty board of directors is comprised of outstanding professionals whom you elected to represent you, and we intend to truly “make a difference”……. More each month on what we are working on and what we accomplish. Put in your calendar two big dates. The first is September 24th where TriCounty & Suffolk will combine to host a meeting at the Melville Marriott, which is sponsored by Travelers and offered through IIABNY. The Travelers has prepared an amazing video that MUST be seen by everyone regarding our national debt and what impact it is going to have on the next generations. This is a ‘not to miss’ event. Specific information and registration details will follow during the summer. The second event is the Tri County Golf Classic on Thursday, October 3rd at Woodmere CC when the award for 2013 “Outstanding Company Executive” will be

The TriCounty Independent Insurance Agents Association Installs Oﬃcers and Directors for the 2013 – 2014 term

New officers and directors took the helm on June 5 during the Long Island-based TriCounty Independent Insurance Agents Association annual installation dinner and awards ceremony. The gathering, held at the Fox Hollow in Woodbury, NY, set the TriCounty IIAA leadership for the 2013 through 2014 term. More than 200 association members and guests joined the festivities of this special occasion starting with a beautiful outdoor cocktail reception. Robert E. Mackoul, CLU, the CEO of Mackoul & Associates and New Empire Group with offices in Garden City and Long Beach, NY was installed as president of TriCounty IIAA by his wife, Deborah Mackoul, President and CFO of New Empire Group. Additional officers and directors were installed by Thomas J. Crowley CPCU, Immediate past Chair of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New York, Inc. (IIABNY) Those officers included Frank Elorza of Club Agency Insurance Brokerage, LLC in Garden City, who will assume the position of vice president and Peter Phillips of Phillips Brokerage, Inc. in Astoria who was installed as Treasurer. Adam P. Erickson of Carlstan North Hills Agency, Inc., will be the group’s Secretary for the new term. The TriCounty Independent Insurance Agents Association Installs Officers and Directors for the 2013 – 2014 term con’t The Bob Morris Award -- presented for commitment to the association and furthering industry professionalism-- was awarded to Frank Elorza who has served on the TriCounty board of directors for many years, including the position of the association’s treasurer this past year. The association announced awards totaling of $10,000 in scholarships this year. Two $2,500 awards went to Christy John and Pranav Ragipani, both exceptional students at St. John’s School of Risk Management, for meeting specified criteria, including insurance related study and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The 2013 St. John’s Education Scholarship Program was again sponsored by Tower Group Companies and Safeco Insurance Company. The awards were presented by Helen Nigro, Tower’s Vice President of National Producer Relations and by Terry Moore, Safeco’s NY-NJ Regional Manager. Winners of two other scholarships were announced and checks totaling $5,000 were presented at their school’s awards ceremonies. Joni Christel graduating from Carle Place High School was the Joel S. Pollack Memorial Scholarship award winner for her essay on ‘what can affect auto insurance rates other than accidents’. Joni was chosen from a large number of submissions from high school seniors in Nassau, Queens and Brooklyn. The Stephen T. Dooley Community Service Award scholarship went to Steven Trezza of West Hempstead High school for outstanding community service during his high school years. Both students received vouchers to be applied to tuition and allied expenses at their chosen educational institutions. TriCounty Independent Insurance Agents Association was awarded the 2013 Local Association of the Year Award along with the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of Suffolk County by IIABNY at the state association’s Annual Meeting in Cooperstown N.Y. on May 9, 2013. This evening, the award was presented to Steven Visco, PhD, AAI the 2012-13 TriCounty president. This award was earned by both groups for their exemplary and creative work for the industry during the year and for helping their communities survive Superstorm Sandy.

When we talked with the two scholarship winners from St. Johns School of Risk Management, we found them to be charming and gracious. They were most appreciative of the continuing education gift of $2,500 that each had received that evening and thanked everyone from the podium with poise. It was apparent that both Christy and Pranav will go far in their chosen careers. This program gives everyone involved a good feeling of extending a hand to young people who are working hard to build a successful future. It’s very diﬃcult to choose two winners from their group to top candidates, but we look forward to the opportunity and hope to continue this program for years to come. Our recipients are hardworking student at St. John’s School of Risk Management as you can see by their resumes. Pranav Ragipani – Pranav is currently completing his Junior year studying Risk Management and is very active in the program and related extracurricular activities. He is an active member of Gamma Iota Sigma and in addition to his activities at the University, he is a volunteer with the Girl Scouts of America (Nassau County) as a management consulting involved with social media and branding. He’s also involved in fund raising for the Association for Children with Down ’s Syndrome. On the career front, he has been working at Starr Companies, since June 2012, as a General Casualty Excess Intern and will be staying on this summer. His GPA is 3.44.

Christy John is a very active Risk Management student. She is a member of Gamma Iota Sigma and a DJ and Assistant Manager for St. John’s University Radio station. She has participated in the SRM/ACE Mentorship Program where she worked with an experienced professional from ACE to enhance her career development in the risk and insurance industry. Christy currently holds an internship with Sony Corporation as a Risk Management Intern from Summer 2012 until present. Most recently she was sent by The School of Risk Management to attend the RIMS Conference in Los Angeles, as a student representative/participant. She maintains a GPA of 3.4.

It was an honor to present the Stephen Dooley Community Service scholarship to Steve Trezza from W. Hempstead High School. First some background on the Scholarship. The “STEPHEN T. DOOLEY COMMUNITY SERVICE” Scholarship. Steve was a major influence in the formation of the Tri County Association. He was president of our organization, a highly respected insurance professional and very active in his community, mostly as a volunteer in charity and youth activities. Steve died from cancer in February 2005 and we thought there was no finer way to honor him than to establish an ongoing scholarship in his memory, in the areas he cherished and worked so hard in. $2,500 will be awarded to a high school graduate who has and continues to demonstrate exemplary community service, to be used towards college expenses.

At the scholarship presentation it became very clear to me that we had picked the right winner. Steve Trezza scholarship application was an impressive list accomplishment in helping his local community. He has also received several special recognitions and awards from long list of respected organizations “International Rotary Club, Boy Scouts of America, Town of Hempstead” just to name a few. Plus Steven has shown and ability to organize and supervised volunteers thru his work with the Eagle Scouts and other volunteer groups. I know some of us old folks question today’s teenagers. Well if ever need to recharge your batteries perhaps you may want to see what today’s graduates are accomplishing. Their out helping their friends, family and community to recover from Sandy and improve the lives. I can honestly say that it was a feel good experience to see and hear Steven and the rest of his peer’s accomplishments. We wish them continued success and good luck in the constantly challenging world. Lastly, my favorite part of the night as I was leaving a lady in the next row mentioned that she knew Stephen Dooley and mentioned that he was “a great guy”.

Joel S. Pollack Memorial Scholarship Award by Bruce Chester TriCounty Past President 2004 - 2005

On Wednesday May 22nd at the Academic Awards at Carle Place High School, TRI-COUNTY past President Bruce Chester of the Chester Agency presented the Joel S. Pollack Memorial Scholarship Award . The award was presented to Joni Christel a Senior at Carle Place High. Bruce mentioned that the award was started 15 years ago in memory of Joel S. Pollack an Independent Insurance Agent who was killed by a Drunk Driver. He also mentioned that the award goes to the student that writes, in the opinion of the scholarship committee the best essay answering an insurance question. This year’s question was “ explain what factors eﬀect auto insurance rates?”. Joni went through many factors that eﬀect rates in her essay. It almost seemed like she had spent time in the Insurance Industry her essay was so thorough, which I mentioned in my presentation. Joni is a Triplet and the other triplets are boys so she knew how much they pay for auto insurance, and she mentioned that in her essay. When she came up for the award she said to me “ I COULD CRY “ she was so happy to get it. Our check for $2,500 will help pay for her tuition at SUNY Geneseo where she will be attending in the fall. Joni won other awards that night, but she was clearly most excited about ours. It makes you feel good about what we do at TRI- COUNTY.

Reflections By Tom Crowley

On May 9th my year as IIABNY Chair of the Board concluded with a great event in Cooperstown and a passing of the torch to my successor, Andy Kaufman. Andy will do a terrific job this year and right on his coat tails waits our own Jim Sutton from Long Island ready to take over next May. In my remarks in Cooperstown I mentioned that my year as Chair was the “longest and fastest year of my life”. This is somewhat of an odd way of expressing the fact that the year was chock full of activity, visits across the State and non-stop interaction with IIABNY staﬀ and leadership, yet it went by in the blink of an eye. I have had many people ask me why I would volunteer for this job and take so much time away from work, family and personal interests. The answer goes back to a lesson I was taught by one of the original partners in the firm I have worked for my entire professional career. Gerry DeBaun was a partner at Maran, DeBaun, Cruise and Simonson, an ex-Company man and someone with the highest levels of integrity and professionalism I have ever worked with. Gerry was also a big believer in IIABNY and giving back. Supporting IIABNY with dues payments, use of services and contributions to Insurpac and IIAPAC is a must in our professional lives. In Cooperstown I was able to recognize individuals who have made an impact in my year or their careers for IIABNY. Our Outstanding Committee Chair award went to Dave Borg Jr. for his work as Chair of Next Gen. The Local Association of the Year Award was shared by Suffolk and Tri-County for all their good works, especially in responding to and dealing with Sandy. The Distinguished Service Award was presented to my wife Julie for her support and understanding, to Pat Calvert for her career long dedication to the independent agency system and all of the agents in Suffolk and Tri County and lastly, to Kathy Lawler for being an outstanding IIABNY staffer who made my year a lot more smooth and organized than it would have been if left to me to organize. One final award I’d like to mention was the Thom McDaniel Exemplar Award presented to Nick Steffey of Narragansett Bay Insurance Company. Thom and Nick worked together to help insurance agents on Long Island several years back by having NBIC buy a chunk of Adirondack’s book that they needed to excise due to over exposure. NBIC stepped in and has become a rock for LI agents and consumers alike. Nick is a tremendous guy who I am glad we were able to honor as the first winner other than Thom McDaniel of this prestigious award. It was also an absolute pleasure being able to spend time with Nick and listen to his ideas and thoughts as our industry moves forward.

Do I Need Rental Car Insurance? From The Insurance Information Institute Properly insuring a rental car can be confusing, frustrating and downright daunting. Unfortunately, many consumers do not even think about car rental insurance until they get to the counter, which can result in costly mistakes—either wasting money by purchasing unnecessary coverage or having dangerous gaps in coverage. Before renting a car, the I.I.I. suggests that you make two phone calls—one to your insurance professional and another to the credit card company you will be using to pay for the rental car. Insurance Company Find out how much coverage you currently have on your own car. In most cases, whatever coverage and deductibles you have on your own car would apply when you rent a car, providing you are using the car for recreation and not for business. If you have dropped either comprehensive or collision on your own car as a way to reduce costs, you will not be covered if your rental car is stolen or damaged in an accident. Check to see whether your insurance company pays for administrative fees, loss of use or towing charges. Some companies may provide an insurance rider to cover some of these costs, which would make it less expensive than purchasing coverage through the rental car company. Keep in mind, however, that in most states diminished value is not covered by insurers. Credit Card Company Insurance benefits offered by credit card companies differ by both the company and/or the bank that issues the card, as well as by the level of credit card used. For instance, a platinum card may offer more insurance coverage than a gold card. Credit cards usually cover only damage to or loss of the rented vehicle, not for [41]

Some credit card companies will provide coverage for towing, but many may not provide for diminished value or administrative fees. Some credit card companies have changed their policies, too, so you may not have as much coverage as you thought. To know exactly what type of insurance you have, call the toll-free number on the back of the card you will be using to rent the car. If you are depending on a credit card for insurance protection, ask the credit card company or bank to send you their coverage information in writing. In most cases, credit card benefits are secondary to either your personal insurance protection or the insurance oﬀered by the rental car company. If you have more than one credit card, consider calling each one to see which oﬀers the best insurance protection. At the Rental Car Counter Since insurance is state regulated, the cost and coverage will vary from state to state. Consumers, however, can generally choose from the following coverages: Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) Also referred to as a collision damage waiver outside the U.S., an LDW is not technically an insurance product. LDWs do, however, relieve or “waive” renters of financial responsibility if their rental car is damaged or stolen. In most cases, waivers also provide coverage for “loss of use,” in the event the rental car company charges the renter for the time a damaged car can not be used because it is being fixed. It may also cover towing and administrative fees.

Waivers, however, may become void if the accident was caused by speeding, driving on unpaved roads or driving while intoxicated. If you already have comprehensive and collision coverage on your own car, check with your personal auto insurer to make sure you are not duplicating coverage you already have. Should you decide it is necessary, this coverage generally costs between $9 and $19 a day. Liability Insurance By law, rental companies must provide the state required amount of liability insurance. Generally, these amounts are low and do not provide much protection. If you have adequate amounts of liability protection on your own car, you may consider forgoing additional liability protection. If you want the supplemental insurance, it will cost between $7 and $14 a day. An umbrella liability policy, however, may be more cost-eﬀective. Umbrella liability insurance is so named because it acts like an umbrella, sitting on top of your auto and homeowners (or renters) liability policies to provide extra protection including accidents while driving your own car or one that you rent. These policies, usually sold in increments of a million dollars, cost as little as $200 to $300 annually for a million dollars worth of coverage and another $50 to $100 for each additional million. Those who do not own their own car and are frequent car renters, can also consider purchasing a non-owner liability policy. This not only provides liability protection when you rent a car, but also when you borrow someone else’s car. Personal Accident Insurance Personal Accident Insurance oﬀers coverage to you and your passengers for medical and ambulance bills for injuries caused in a car crash. Those driving a rental car from the U.S. into Mexico may find it progressively more diﬃcult to rent a car as U.S. rental car companies are increasingly concerned about the rising crime rates in that country. The minimum required insurance coverage to drive in Mexico is civil liability insurance which covers you in case you cause injury or damage.
