PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
My Favorite Season
As far back as I can remember growing up as a kid the
fall was always my favorite :me of year. It always felt great as the air got a nice crisp feel too it and the leaves start turning. I always looked forward to going out for Halloween with my friends and hopefully ge=ng money versus some stale candy. Plus as a sports fan the combina:on of World Series, start of the football, hockey and basketball seasons made for some Frank J. Elorza President
real excitement. I even looked forward to going back to school and reconnec:ng with friends.
As I got older I s:ll appreciated much of the above
however I really started to enjoy Thanksgiving and all the great vibes that come with perhaps the most quint essen:al American Holiday. I also took up skiing and found a new reason to welcome the fall knowing it would lead me to skiing and the slopes.
In the last few years we have found two more dates that
have had a major impact on all of us. First there is 9/11. I’m not sure that I can add much to this date other than as Americans and New Yorkers our world has been changed forever. The second date is 10/29/12 “Super Storm Sandy” perhaps one of the biggest challenges that we have ever faced

as insurance professionals. It’s s:ll shocking to hear the stories of people s:ll dealing with the aQermath of Sandy. It’s worth no:ng that in both cases there have been no shortage of stories of our neighbors stepping up to help each other.
As we go thru this fall season and approach
Thanksgiving this year I think It’s :me for us to appreciate all the good in our lives including the challenges at the office and give thanks for all the good in our lives.
One last note the TriCounty Holiday Party this year will
be on December 10, 2014 at Chateau Briand. Yes we are promising it will be a party (were happy to have WINLI & CPCU will be join us this year). Plus this year we have some very special guests. The Marines are coming and we are very proud to announce that we are par:cipa:ng in the Marines Toys for Tots we’re asking everyone to bring an unwrapped toy to our holiday party on December 10 to help ‘ Toys for Tots’ provide many of these children in our community a bit of Christmas cheer.

A View From The Club House by Pat Calvert
Our 2014 golf classic was at a new location and proved to be a ‘home run’. (If
you can use that expression for a golf outing). Hempstead Golf and Country Club provided an exceptional golf course followed by a terrific cocktail reception and dinner – not to mention perfect weather which we know they were not really responsible for. That responsibility went to our golf committee; Bob Mackoul, Frank Elorza, Kevin Crossley, James Bastion, Jeanne Abatelli and yours truly. Not sure which one of them has the “in” with a higher power, but they came through with a winner.
Awards went to some of the usual golfers and some new ones too, as the
photos display…..Donna Doyle, our female Rory McIlroy, again took first place in most of the women’s events, but the happiest person that evening seemed to be Matt Folan who won the Derek Jeter autographed baseball card. His dad, Steve, said Matt put every one of his auction tickets into that basket and it certainly paid off.
Congratulations to Peter Resnick, one of the most respected and admired
industry professionals in our region, who received the TriCounty ‘Insurance Executive of the Year’ award. Recognition also went to Peter’s very able assistant, Linda Fazzio, who was a tremendous help in making our outing successful.
We try to tell the story with photos after an affair but the best way to
appreciate these events is to attend them in person. Whether it be our annual golf outing, our upcoming holiday party, the educational offerings during the year or our elegant installation dinner in the spring, we urge you to be a part of our association. Members of our board of directors and our past presidents are always on hand to meet and greet folks and make everyone feel comfortable.
Please plan to join us for our final event of the year on December 10 and
make a resolution to get involved in 2015. We will welcome you. [12]

Travelers Companies, the only property-casualty
insurer in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, said Chief Executive Officer Jay Fishman has been diagnosed with a neuromuscular condition. “While fortunately it has so far been slow progressing, you may soon see me with a cane or other gear to help me get around,” Fishman said in a letter to employees released yesterday by the New York-based insurer. “Nothing about this circumstance changes my ability or plan to continue as chairman and CEO.” We wish Jay the best. Our prayers and support are with him.

Holiday Season Great Time for Coverage Review by Chris Wukovits
If you are like me, nothing says welcome to the
Holiday Season like daydreaming about all the cool stuff you hope someone remembers you hinting about that would really make you happy. It is also the time of year when young and vintage love is often culminated by occasion of an engagement. Maybe it’s a new 70 inch flat screen TV, or maybe it’s that I Phone 6 Plus or could be that two carat Diamond engagement ring from Jared that “jewelry guy” that we hear about all the time on the radio. So as insurance professionals, it is important for us to advise our clients and prospects of the extraordinary value and protection provided by purchasing personal property insurance, scheduled coverage and blanket coverage to protect their belongings.
Whether they rent or own a home, condo or co-op, a standard property policy
form (HO3, HO4, HO6 and HA9) will provide good protection for our client’s things. The best way I have heard insurance sales agents explain contents is that “if you turn your dwelling upside down everything that falls out would be your contents.” It is important to make sure for our client’s that rent or own a condo or co-op to periodically complete a brief inventory and determine if the amount of coverage for their property will need to be adjusted. Sending emails to them or dropping them a postcard might be a great way to encourage them to call our office for a free insurance review. With all the direct writers and captives out there, independent agents really need to provide value added services such as free insurance reviews
[26]
and a promise to do the shopping for them at renewal so they are not tempted to leave us. Now as you are aware being in this great industry we know these policies have limited coverage for certain classes of property such as jewelry, furs and firearms to name a few, so this is another opportunity to provide greater protection and peace of mind to our clients with a relatively low premium impact. So it is important to make sure those items are scheduled on the policy individually or covered under a blanket basis. An engagement ring and all high end jewelry will be best covered under a schedule. Personal Articles coverage provides the broadest coverage with very limited exclusion (War, Nuclear and wear and tear) some carriers write it on the existing property policy form and some write it as a stand-alone so you gain a PIF (Policy in Force).
As an agent, it is a great feeling to tell our clients they are covered for a loss,
the inverse of this is always tough and really opens up discussions about why a particular coverage was not provided or offered. An E&O claim or the possibility of one is a sure fire way to take years off of our lives. The best way to avoid this is to offer solid coverage and make sure we have the file documented that coverages were offered and rejected. Utilizing a coverage rejection form is a simple and effective easy way to memorialize the transaction and ensure both parties are on the same page and are in agreement with the coverage recommended by us and selected by the client. So really look at this upcoming season as the prime time where people are acquiring more “stuff” so we have an opportunity to better protect our clients from financial hardship of replacing these items.

DIGITAL MARKETING
TrustedChoice.com / Project CAP 101 by Julie MacConnell, IIABNY | jmacconnell@iiabny.org
TrustedChoice.com (powered by Project CAP) is the result of a great initiative with huge opportunity for competing in the digital space, but the building process has left many agents lost in confusion. This probably includes you. Don’t worry, throw out everything you know about TrustedChoice.com and let’s get to the basics. Learn the reason we have it, how it was started, what it is, how it works and how you can get listed.
Let’s Start from the Beginning
THE REASON
75%! Just think of how many times you or your friends Google something before purchase. But, independent agents aren’t showing up & direct writers have been mastering this space. The Result? Independent agents are losing business and commissions every day.
HISTORY
75% of personal insurance co nsumers research on line before p urchasing
So, understanding the long-term gravity of this issue, the Big ‘I’, Trusted Choice®, state associations and 6 investor carriers put their heads together to create a tool to help independent agents compete online and win back those commissions. Project CAP is that tool.
Ta-da! The Solution
WHAT IT IS
Project CAP is the technology and digital marketing strategy behind what consumers now see as TrustedChoice.com. TrustedChoice.com is a website that enables a “one-stop-shop” online insurance shopping experience. Consumers receive multiple, real-time personal lines rate quotes from a number of insurance companies and can then connect with a local independent agent to bind and for ongoing service. It delivers your potential customers the best of both worlds - ease of technology (what they want) and the value of working with an independent agent (what they need). It delivers you qualified leads.
HOW DOES IT WORK
