PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
One of the best resources we have is IIABNY. The
members of your TriCounty Board of Directors turn to them o>en for a variety of informa?on, whether it is educa?on, webinars, markets and much more. If you’re not already taking advantage of the many Big “I” member benefits offered, including the following, I recommend that you do.
IIABNY has developed several excellent employee
benefit programs that you should consider. With our aging workforce and the need to aLract new young talent (and keep them once hired), these programs are vital to the independent Peter Phillips President
agent and broker today. The dental and vision plans, as explained in the flyers following this ar?cle, only require 2 employees to par?cipate and they can be set up as either ‘employer paid’ or ‘employee paid’. That means, even agencies who may be struggling with overhead issues can s?ll offer their employees two excellent benefit plans that provide important coverage for themselves and their families at very aLrac?ve rates.
IIABNY has also designed an excellent group life, AD&D
and long term disability program through MetLife that includes the op?on of purchasing addi?onal voluntary life coverage. This package is only available as an employer paid benefit, however, it does allow agencies the opportunity to buy several different levels of coverage based on job descrip?ons. For full details, please contact Eric DeFrancesco

What A Party It Was! by Andrew Chong
We would like to give a huge ‘thank you’ to
everyone who came and supported our successful post-holiday networking party on January 11th at K-Pacho! The cabaret dancers put on phenomenal live musical performances. Singing and dancing along to the exciting music in the midst of colorful costumes easily made it a night to remember. The event was complete with good food and great company.
We also had 50/50 raffles with four prizes of $500 each. All of our altruistic
winners returned their winnings to give to a greater cause – the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. This organization’s mission is to provide a safe and comfortable shelter to families who are experiencing the pain of having a sick child in a neighboring hospital. Through this event, we all raised enough money to fully support a family to stay at Ronald McDonald House of Long Island free of charge for one full year or a number of families for shorter stays.
[18]
What A Party It Was! con’t
On Tuesday, January 21st, Peter Phillips and others on the TriCounty Board
of Directors presented a check for $10,000 to leaders of Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. We thank everyone who purchased a 50/50 ticket at our cabaret party on January 11th for contributing to this donation.
Don’t miss out on the next opportunity to meet fantastic people and share in
the joy of giving back. We hope that you would join us for our next event!
Thank you,
Andrew Chong

Governor announces first carrier applica5on of smartphones for proof of insurance
[35]
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced that GEICO has become the first insurance company in New York allowed to provide customers with electronic iden?fica?on cards for their smartphones and electronic devices. At the governor’s direc?on, the state Department of Motor Vehicles amended its regula?ons in April to allow insurance companies to issue e-cards to their customers. This new feature is now available to New York customers on the GEICO app. The e-cards can be used when registering vehicles and during traffic stops.
Berkshire Unit Prepares to Sell Insurance Direct to Business via Internet Berkshire Hathaway Inc. plans to sell insurance directly to businesses over the Internet, paving the way for Chairman Warren BuffeL to expand his company’s insurance opera?ons. Berkshire Hathaway Direct Insurance Co. will ini?ally focus on workers’ compensa?on and business owners’ package policies.
U.S. Highway Deaths Up U.S. highway deaths increased 8.1 percent in the first half of 2015, partly fueled by low gas prices and the resul?ng 51.9 billion more miles driven compared to the same period the previous year, as well as higher rates of distracted driving. Look to see if the fatali?es con?nue to escalate, pushing the auto insurance industry to respond by increasing premiums. Fortunately, New York was not listed by the Na?onal Safety Council among the top 15 states with the highest percentage increase in traffic deaths from 2014 to the first six months of 2015. Oregon holds that dubious honor.

Best, Worst States for Insurance Regula5on Vermont, Utah, Iowa, Virginia and Kentucky get an “A” and North Carolina an “F” in one think tank’s annual grading of states on how they regulate the property/casualty insurance industry. Louisiana, New York, Texas, Florida, California, Hawaii and Montana also came in at the boLom with low grades of “D”. The 2015 Insurance Regula?on Report Card, the R Street Ins?tute’s annual publica?on, assigns scores in 10 different areas including solvency monitoring, an?-fraud efforts, ra?ng and underwri?ng freedom, minimizing poli?ciza?on of regula?on, consumer protec?on and fostering compe??ve markets. New York’s strength was an?-fraud resources while its weaknesses were solvency regula?on, consumer protec?on, fiscal efficiency, excessive rate regula?on and underwri?ng restric?ons.
