PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Robert E. Mackoul, CLU President
It is my hope that all had an enjoyable and healthy summer. As fall approaches and temperatures drop, insurance salespeople seem to get mo:vated to do more business. It’s a known fact that more new business is sold in the last four months of a year than usually what is wri?en in the first eight months of any given year. Maybe it’s because owners, producers and underwriters focus on their goals. Maybe it is because the summer is over and everyone is ready to get back to work. I’m not sure, but that is a sta:s:c that I remembered from a long :me ago and it does seem to have some validity. The TriCounty board has worked all summer and we have arranged a series of mee:ngs that will truly interest and benefit our full membership. The first event we are offering is the Travelers OverdraF program on September 24th at The Melville Marriot. The Travelers has produced a very eye-‐ opening video and panel discussion which will be offered in several loca:ons around the country, including Long Island. It is not insurance based but rather a compelling explana:on of America’s federal debt crisis and how it impacts American lives, including the futures of our children and grandchildren. It is a can’t miss event that is free to our membership and their employees. The program starts at 4:00 on September 24 and will be followed by a cocktail recep:on at 6:00. Be sure to register before September 17. You also won’t want to miss the TriCounty Golf Classic on October 3rd at the Woodmere Country Club that will honor Greg Clark of Mapfre Insurance as 2013 Outstanding Company Execu:ve. The Golf Classic has been completely revamped this year, with proceeds of the event going to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. This year, due to significant sponsorship commitments, we have wonderful and useful giFs for golfers. In addi:on, you will play on a beau:ful golf course, enjoy a terrific cocktail hour and magnificent dinner as we honor a truly deserving insurance execu:ve Greg Clark. (Golf not
required, come for cocktails and dinner only if you wish) Plan on registering early. Bring your company marke:ng reps, underwriters and staff members; network with friends and other industry professionals all for a great cause. It’s all happening on Thursday, October 3rd at Woodmere Country Club. Also in October we are planning an educa:onal and social gathering on October 16th in Brooklyn. Our ‘boroughs’ team, Peter Phillips, Dean Aloia and Theo Garatzio:s are spearheading this event, and while the date is set, the program and loca:on are being nego:ated as we go press. Details will follow soon. We also urge all TriCounty members to a?end the annual Downstate Legisla:ve Forum on October 23rd at Chateau Briand in Carle Place where lobbyists from IIABNY, CIBGNY and PIANY will discuss important and :mely legisla:ve issues and answer ques:ons. Watch the mail for more details on this once a year opportunity. TriCounty will present another mee:ng, this one on November 20, in Queens County. The loca:on and program topic not yet determined. Details to follow. We’ll end 2013 with our popular holiday party in Nassau County. This year it will be held on December 12 at Chateau Briand in Carle Place. A second December holiday party is on the drawing board for either Brooklyn or Queens. Full informa:on will be out shortly. Please go to our website on a regular basis for registra:on, updates of our mee:ng programs and for all kinds of useful informa:on. www.tricountyagents.com I look forward to seeing you at each of these special events this year. OVERDRAFT Overdraft A NONPARTISAN DEFICIT DOCUMENTARY MADE FOR PUBLIC TELEVISION
The Travelers Institute partnered with WTVI-TV, the Charlotte, North Carolina public television station, and Susie Films to develop an award-winning, one-hour documentary that explores the depth and impact of America’s debt crisis at the federal and state levels. Made for public television, Overdraft highlights the growing U.S. deficit and its critical implications for individuals and U.S. economic competitiveness. About the Overdraft documentary
Featured experts
Now eclipsing $16 trillion, America’s debt is the number one economic crisis facing the country today. As such, the goal of Overdraft is to give viewers a better understanding of how the federal debt affects their daily lives, the choices that will have to be made to manage the problem and how they can participate in the ongoing economic debate. Through first-person accounts, the factors that have contributed to the debt and possible solutions are presented, including such major topics as entitlement programs, defense spending, tax reform, and the choices America’s debt forces on individuals and businesses.
Overdraft features the following key business, political and economic leaders:

DFS Approves 9.5% Workers’ Comp Loss Cost Hike, Says Employer Costs Will Rise 2.8% Workers’ Compensation insurance loss costs for New York employers will rise by an average 9.5 percent this fall, the New York State Department of Financial Services announced this week. The DFS approved the New York Compensation Insurance Rating Board’s revised loss cost filing, submitted late last week. Regulators had previously rejected a proposed increase of 16.9 percent. In his July 11 opinion rejecting the initial filing, New York Superintendent of Financial Services Benjamin M. Lawsky said that the department’s indication was “that an increase of no more than 9.5% would be reasonable,” and invited the NYCIRB to refile. The board submitted the revised filing

What is InsurPac and why should I contribute before the end of the year?
InsurPac is the largest property-casualty agent Political Action Committee (PAC), and one of the largest insurance industry PACs in the country. Thanks to InsurPac, the Big “I” is regularly ranked as one of the most effective lobbying groups in Washington D.C. Its main goal is to support federal legislators and federal office candidates who are supportive of the Independent Agency system. Every day, Congress considers federal legislation that can seriously impact agent businesses. Also happening every day are fundraisers that benefit U.S. Congressmen and by Andrew Chong Senators. InsurPac’s federal lobbyists attend these HD Underwriting Agency fundraisers under the Big I banner and establish relationships with important legislators. These relationships are key—they represent the access to lawmakers that can be critical and even better, influential. At the very least, the fundraisers are an opportunity to educate lawmakers from an agent perspective. InsurPac’s success rate speaks for itself. In the 2009-2010 election cycle, 93% of its supported races were victorious; the previous election cycle’s victory rate was 92%. InsurPac aims to become a $1 million PAC per year, or $2 million PAC per election cycle. The more dollars raised, the more federal races it can support—and that is why we need your contribution. Your support will ensure that the agent voice remains strong and its presence felt throughout the halls of Congress. Help continue the cycle of success and make sure to get your contributions in before the end of the year.
