OKTOBERFEST [1]

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

New Season -‐ New Happenings

Technology has moved to a level that was unimaginable

ten years ago. Apple’s latest smartphone features are appearing in the 6S and 6S Plus with even more bells and whistles. Latest design includes a pressure-‐sensiBve screen, a beDer camera and a new pink color, (which will make this iPhone a ‘must have now!’ with your teen age daughter.) Peter Phillips President

Another hurricane season is on the calendar and in our

minds while many of our clients are sBll recovering from Superstorm Sandy three years ago. Will predicBons be true and afford us a gentle season this year?

The poliBcal landscape is completely unpredictable with

non-‐poliBcians leading the poliBcians by huge numbers in the current polls. The familiar names that were considered ‘shoe-‐ ins’ a few months ago are slipping further behind leaving the field wide open for up and down changes before next year’s elecBon.

I find all of this is sBmulaBng to think about and I’m

pleased to add that TriCounty has something exciBng on the horizon too. Instead of a golf ouBng this fall, we will host an authenBc Oktoberfest. This fesBve evening will be held on October 8th at the popular PlaDedeutch Park Restaurant in

Connecting For A Cause by Jeanne Abatelli

As we all know, October is Breast Cancer

awareness month and this October TriCounty is having an Oktoberfest at Plattduetsche Biergarten in Franklin Square. The purpose of this event is to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day, an event I will be walking this November for a second time.

Last year in January 2014, my cousin, a survivor,

posted she would be walking the 3-Day with some friends of hers from college. I asked if I could tag along, and with tears of joy she exclaimed “YES!”

So I started training for my 3-Day 60-Mile journey. Yes 60 miles, that is not a typo. I found

a group in Manhattan to walk with. They are all Komen 3-Day veterans, and I was welcomed into the group as the newbie. I walked every training walk I could make and I took in every piece of advise they had to offer on my training. My very first training walk was 12 miles. After that I was hooked. Last year I •

did 90 training walks

put 500 plus miles on my feet

gave up 175 hours out of my year

and met some amazing people

[7]

Connecting For A Cause con’t

For me the best part is the people. Some are success stories, such as Liz, who was

diagnosed with aggressive Stage 3 breast cancer. Her doctors essentially gave up hope until they tried a new drug that Komen-sponsored research had made possible. Now she is a 12-year survivor, who walks 3-Days, hikes mountains, runs, bikes, etc., etc.

There are fighters, like Kari, who when diagnosed with cancer she was told she was stage

2 and of the breast cancers you could have hers was a good one. Now she is stage 4, it has spread to her bones and lungs. Yet she is strong and a fighter. I had the privilege to be a part of her 3-Day team, so this years walk will be dedicated to her strength.

There are too many women who have lost this battle, one of whom is my very own mother.

And just this past week we lost a world famous author, Jackie Collins to this disease.

In 2014 more than 225,000 American women (and some men) were diagnosed with

invasive breast cancer. There were more than 40,000 breast cancer deaths. Some rich and famous. Some poor and anonymous. And thousands in-between. 40,000 deaths; 40,000 families ripped apart. Just in one year.

So this year, I’m putting my pink sneakers back on and walking. Walking in hopes of a

world without breast cancer one day. You can help make that dream a reality by coming out and supporting our event on October 8th. If you can’t make it then maybe you’d like to make a personal donation. You can do so here: http://www.the3day.org/goto/injeanious1

Join me in the fight to end breast cancer, together we can make a great team.
