Chapel for the Lost

Funerary Chapel in Vestre Kirkegaard FALL 2019

This is a studio project from my 4th year studying abroad in Copenhagen. Vestre kirkegård is Copenhagen’s largest cemetery. True to the Danish spirit, it is open to the public as a park where anyone can sit, have a picnic, walk their dog, run, bike, and nap, designed for the living just as much as for the dead. My intention for the funerary chapel is to allow my visitor to superimpose their own meanings onto my chapel, which is to the best of my ability free of detached rationalization and arbitrary meaning. I allow my direct experience of the site to guide the intended emotional experience of the chapel. To me, it should feel like arriving in a clearing after getting lost in a forest. To feel alone, but with the comfort of something undefined, to be allowed to sort out your own feelings and thoughts by your own pace. In result, I suspended an ambiguous white volume high up in the air by a scattering of thin columns — none of them exactly upright, seemingly grown out of the ground like uncut bamboo. This verticality accentuates the feeling of the forest and allows the visitor to become lost in their own thoughts, the chapel they’re in rarely calling out for their attention but blending into the blurred background merely as a quiet place to reflect. In the center of this clearing lies a rough hewn white marble platform, upon which lay the casket. It is the brightest point in the room, as light from above seemingly emanates its glow from this platform. After the ritual, the visitor crosses a thick horizontal volume, signaling the end of their journey and opening up into a flowery field full of life and hope.

Reflective Sanctum Mt. Wilson Scientist Retreat FALL 2018

The focus of this semester is to understand architectural structure and to differentiate between structure, enclosure, and a meaningful architectural space. We were tasked to create a living and work space for two scientists near the peak of Mt. Wilson, Los Angeles, near by the Mt. Wilson Observatory telescope. Due to the steepness of the slope and the abundance of trees within the site, we were given contraints to only touch the ground in 3 locations, thus having the structure span and cantilever for minimum disturbance to the site. I took inspiration with the structure of a billboard, and decided to separate my program in 3 levels of privacy within a long and narrow structure. The lowest level is accessible by the public to allow for educational lectures and tours. The middle level is for the use of both scientists as their office and main living space, and the upper level is completely private, accomodating bedrooms and a restroom. I wanted the research building to blend in seamlessly with its environment and create synthesis of nature and architecture. As such, shifted planes of glass parallel to each other enclose the building and interact with the forest differently at different times of day. In the morning it becomes completely transparent, allowing for the view from the road to completely penetrate the building, leaving only the exposed structure and its inhabitants to be seen, almost invisible within the forest. In the afternoon, the sunlight reflects from the glass and it becomes a mirror that reflects the trees in front of it, hiding it within the forest in plain sight. At times it is difficult to distinguish what is structure and what is forest.

Multi-unit residence on Abenrå Boulevard SPRING 2020

This project is situated within the historic district of downtown Copenhagen, next to a 18th century church and an array of buildings built across centuries and various architectural styles. The Familiehus centers around the interactions between solid and void and the spatial opportunities it provides for its inhabitants. As a half-infill condition in which there are inconsistent restraints against the edges, these in turn determined the boundaries of my form. Then, voids are inserted to determine the central family space, as well as a central communal space. In the negatiation between solid and void within this building, I wanted create an interaction between openness and privacy, where the family can gather in a big airy living space, while being able to retreat into the comfort and solidity of their private spaces. My roof is gabled to echo contextual ties and to allow for better opportunities to negotiate this void-and-solid relationship, and a dark brick facade with a uniform aperture grid emphasizes the effects of the mass of my building as well as to contrast the placement of the large voids. Residents can access a common ground-floor garden, common spaces on the first three levels, a roof terrace, bike storage, and a laundry room, while having completely independently functioning units designed for four families of four.

Precast Playground Tsunami Egress Tower at Venice Blvd. FALL 2020 / Project partner: Cheyenne Capener Students in groups of two were assigned to apply their research of precast modularity and construction from the first half of this studio to devise a Tsunami Evacuation Tower that primarily funcations as a community center. The site location for the tsunami tower is selected to be on Venice Beach based on safety needs for the beach-front community with a low-lying coastal area and large tsunami inundation zones. Its high traffic for tourism and mixed community demographics was also considered to determine demand for programmatic safety provisions, as well as considering local economy to support project implementation. The design objective sought to resolve component strategy, tsunami evacuation building guidelines, social design principles, egress concerns, and inconography. The resulting structure operates as a multi-storey playground for the tourist and residents of Venice Beach, with programmatic focus on the internal layout of the project. This includes a landscaped plaza area with water features and seating, an open bar, an elevated and modularized skatepark, a cafe area with storage pods containing supplies in the in the event of a tsunami, a basketball court, and a helipad on each level respectively. A tight-knit composition of shear walls and built-in moment frames accomplishES structural redundancy while offering formal opportunities for an investigation into rigor and repetition and a playfulness in composition in plan and in elevation.

Skid Row Public Pool and Library SPRING 2021 / Senior Project My project situates a library on top of a public pool within Skid Row, Los Angeles intending to provide equity in public space, resources and recreation for the residents and surrounding communities of Skid Row. By aligning administrative and circulation spaces in a L-shaped core on the inner infill condition of the site, the rest of the building is freed up to correspond to short-term and long-term programmatic configurations. The core and the free plan operates between lightness and heaviness and centers upon the public experience of the library and pool, while the L-core is concealed with reflective metal. The exterior is wholly clad with translucent and reflective polycarbonate and acrylic, giving the effect of a sheer or implied volume and an ambient, diffused interior. The programmed volumes within the library are similarly dissolved by use of glass and reflective metal. My project emphasizes the clarity and hierarchy of circulatory, structural and operational systems and explores various types of thresholds to merge and delineate space. The surface and material manipulation of the perceptive experience is meant to be a generator of a new architectural language of public space, serving those who are arguably in need of public space, proper resources, and recreational opportunities the most.
