Journey in space?

Experiment with displaying information

THE GOLDREN RECORD

The Golden Record is a collection of binary code information, the record was placed aboard the Voyager Spacecraft and was then launched in the year 1977. The record itself containts sounds, images and a vast amount of information to describe the life of the human race on Earth, the record was made for the purpose of any other life form in space and for future human civilisations that may come across it.

THE VOYAGERS

About the film: In 1977, Nasa sent two voyagers into space, each of the voyagers carries a golden record, the golden record holds a selection of images and sounds that are collected from Planet Earth. Carl Sagan says “The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced space fairing civilisations in interstellar space. But the launching of this bottle into the cosmic ocean says something ver hopeful about life on this planet. While working on the Golden Record Carl Sagan met and fell in love with his wife Annie Druyan, The Golden Record became their message to mankind.

IDEAS 1: REPRESENTING DATA/RESEARCH

BRENDAN DAWES

DIGITAL CITY PORTRAITS

Brendan Dawes was commissioned to create digital portraits for each city from gathering millions of data from social media sites from which they interacted about events that happened in their everyday lives. The data collected from different types of subjects throughout social media such as twitter, each colour represents different interactions such as tweets, favourites and hashtags. When the data is collected they start to create an image from a system which makes the image overall unique. I like this idea and think it’s very creative, I would like to see if I could use this technique in my own work somehow.

BRENDAN DAWES

MOMENTS IN MUSIC I was really interested in how Brendan created these pieces of work, these three pieces were made from music by three bands based in Sheffield. Using written software, he collected frequency data from the music and depending on the frequency of the music it would create spikes in the shape. From the 3D data it would then be 3D printed to create a physical object, which would be a hand held representation of the song.

GRAFIK MAGAZINE

I was researching graphic design work and came across this magazine called ‘Grafik 182’ it contained alot of visually stimulating pieces of work which made me look at the way graphic work is presented to people, what colours work well together, shapes and text that is used when presenting work. I liked the overall information I got from the magazine and thought it would be relevant to include it in my research. ‘Grafik is an independently published, monthly graphic design magazine serving the international design community. Aiming to produce unbeatable coverage of groundbreaking new design, it showcases the cream of both cutting edge and commercial graphic design, providing a platform for photography, art, typography, illustration, new media, fashion, technology and advertising.’

IDEA 2: INFO GRAPHICS/ RESEARCH

CHRIS HARMON

OIL’D

While thinking about making an info graphical piece of work I came across this piece of work by Chris Harmon. If I was going along the lines of making an info graphical piece of work I think I’d do it similar to this. I like the animation that is documented and how it’s documented with the clever colour scheme and flowing animation. I also think that the animation does a good job of portraying the point that it’s putting across to the audience with it’s well designed graphics which give the audience a visual point of view and not just boring them with information.

CHAD HAGEN

INFO GRAPHIC POSTERS

I wanted to get a better understanding of what I wanted my info graphic posters to look like so I researched artists and game across Chad Hagen, a graphic designer. I like the colours that he uses in his info graphics to represent data, I also think they do a good job of standing out from each other making the information being displayed is clear. The way that he sets out his data is also another thing that I like about his work, it’s not set in the normal, boring lay out he’s set it out and made an actual visual

CHAD HAGEN

INFO GRAPHIC POSTERS

I really like the layout of Chad Hagen’s work and how his lays it out. I specifically like the colours that he choses and how well they work together to create a finished looking piece of work. I think I’d like to take inspiration from his work and somehow work it into my own to help me represent the data that I intend to show for my series of info graphic pieces of work.

ANIMATED INFOGRAPHIC SHOW REEL

ANIMATED INFOGRAPHICS

I chose to include this animated info graphic show reel as I think it does a great job if providing the audience with the information that it is providing, I believe it does it’s job by not only listing the information but displaying a visual point of view to help the information get across to the viewer, this is also a good idea to keep the viewer engaged and interested in the video. I like the colour scheme of the info graphic and the graphic as it’s not too busy and is straight to the point. If I was to carry on my idea of creating an info graphic I think I’d take inspiration from this one and try to incorporate them into my own info graphic.

DAVID PALIWODA AND JESSE WILLIAMS

HOW FAR IS IT TO MARS?

Continuing with my info graphic research I came across this motion info graphic piece of work by David Paliwoda and Jesse Williams. The motion graphic piece shows you how far it is to mars using pixels giving you an idea of how far away Mars really is. http://www.distancetomars.com

UIC LONDON LANGUAGE SCHOOL

INFO GRAPHICS

For my first idea which is a series of info graphical posters I decided to do some research into info graphics itself. I came across a range of them but one of them stood out to me the most and it was this one from the UIC London Language School. I like the colour choices for each subject as it works well with the selected subject and it works well by highlighting the specific pieces of information for each poster. I also think the layout to the posters work well in displaying the information.

IDEA 3: MY PERSONAL GOLDEN RECORD

PERSONAL GOLDEN RECORD/ PROFILE

PROFILE RECORD

For this idea I wanted to create my own personal record that involved my own selection of music and photos that meant something to me, to leave my own mark that maybe would describe my interests, you could say it would be an overall profile on myself. All of this information would be in binary code and encrypted onto my body itself including details about me, I would be the record. The record would also include Historical events, information on the human anatomy

MAP MAKING EXPERIMENTATION

MAPPING OUT

I started by looking at maps and deciding which ones I could map out, I decided to chose five countries which were America, Britain, Germany, Vietnam and France and then highlight the locations within them. This was a brief starting point just to experiment and see what worked well. I liked how the first one looked so I decided to carry on with the idea and map out the other countries that I had selected.

GERMANY

UK

VIETNAM

LONDON UNDERGROUND/ CONNECTIONS

After I highlighted the locations on the map I thought I could connect them somehow or maybe animate them joining up, I thought that the London underground maps would have been a great source for reference and just for an overall idea of how I would want my series of posters to turn out.
