COUP D’ESPRIT
In a world where affordable art is often finished with a bottom line in mind; what we put in our homes is often impersonal, cheap looking and ends up in the rubbish after a few months. COUP D’ESPRIT set out to make art which is stylish, glamorous, expensive looking, handmade with attention to detail and affordable. Each piece is authenticated with an embossed chop and a label on the back of the frame. On request, the art works can be signed and numbered by the artist.

We aim to provide you with the art you need for your project. Let us know what trends you are following in your store or what type of interior you aim to compete. Original imagery we prepare can be applied in to wide variety of specialized mediums from prints on paper, canvas or plexiglass. Your art orders can be framed to spec and packaged either in individual mail order parcels or prepared on palettes for container loading.
Limited Edition Artwork
Coup d’Esprit artwork is run in limited print runs of editions of 500. An edition is a limited run of a particular artwork and consists of a set number of prints of each size and colorway. Once artwork is sold out, Coup d’Esprit will not release the artwork again in that size and colorway. The actual art itself is not signed. To certify the authenticity of the work and ensure the integrity of the edition, each piece is chopped with an embossed stamp and an archival card that includes the artwork title, size, colorway, and number of prints in the edition is fixed to the back of each frame. Coup d’Esprit controls very closely the number of prints sold of the artwork.
POSTAGE STAMPS
Having selected really cool vintage stamps which were scanned a very high resolution, we printed these on archival art paper and then overlaid antique looking post marks in hand applied gold leaf. The art work is framed with a matt board and elegant stepped frame in an distressed silver and gold. These are best displayed as a pair.

Birds and fruit painting
Most bird-and-fruit paintings belong to the scholar-artist style of Chinese painting. Chinese painting and calligraphy distinguishes themselves from other cultures’ arts by their emphasis on motion, and change with dynamic life. We reworked these typical Chinese images by giving them a manga type of line work and them a blast of abstract colour pattern. The flowers were then hand embellished with gold leaf.
GYCLÉE PRINT
Giclée print delivers a vivid image with maximum colour accuracy and exceptional resolution. The standard for museums and galleries around the world, giclée (French for “to spray”) is a printing process where millions of ink droplets are sprayed onto the paper’s surface. With the great degree of detail and smooth transitions of colour gradients, giclée prints appear much more realistic than other reproduction prints. At Coup d’Esprit we add to this luxurious print technique by craft-fully hand gilding feature areas of the images with gold and silver leaf.
SEA CREATURE ART
The original artwork was sourced from antique botanical prints and then scanned at very high resolution. We printed these on archival art paper and then overlaid delicately raised detail in hand applied gold leaf. The subject is a variety of jelly fish. There are three predominantly blue toned prints that are 30X30 CM large and one extra large print that is framed in an richly faux finished amber patina frame.

Digging through dusty Parisian antiquarian backrooms, I came across this 1743 fine copper engraving by Bernard Picart which illustrates the construction of a Chinese Pagoda. We reworked the print by adding hand embellishments in gold leaf.

GOLD & SILVER FOIL
Extremely thin sheets of gold (about 0.1 micrometre thick) have traditionally been used as gilding material since the days of ancient Egypt, where it was used to decorate royal mummy sarcophagi. It was also popular with medieval handcopied illuminated manuscripts. At COUP D’ESPRIT, we have developed unconventional modern techniques to apply gold leaf that give our art work a richness of texture, depth of colour and that highlights the hand finished nature of our work – a wink to the past.

The original artwork was sourced from Victorian botanical prints and then rendered through digital vector graphing software. The files were printed by silkscreen and then overlaid with an intricate lacy pattern in hand applied gold leaf. These are best displayed as a pair.

VINTAGE GLAMOUR
At Coup d’Esprit, we scour the archives for antique photographs of beautiful women. Vintage and beyond, we are obsessed with the evolution of the ideals of beauty. Once scanned at high resolution, we then retouch and reformat these babes to make them modern and just a bit bling-y. The Photos shown are of images printed on paper – which is the best medium to use with hand gilded accents. The same images take on another dimension when printed on plexiglass or to canvas and then retouched by hand. Let us know what are your favourite photos and let us customize the art for you.

GLAMOUR 1930
I found a scrap book dated to the 1930’s in which an anonymous admirer cut and pasted hundreds of images of ravishing beauties from the tabloids of the time. Most of the photos are printed using coarse half-tone patterns which I find to be mesmerizing. I enlarged the pattern to really get a hypnotic looking rhythm to the prints which we hand finished with gold leaf.

PRINT & Paint on CANVAS
A vibrant and cost friendly application that rings with the authenticity of the human touch is our technique of applying hand painted touches over digital prints on canvas. It blurs the line between painting and photography. Any of the images we have developed can be produced in this way.

TRAM BANNERS
are an easily customizable product category that adds both a vintage and contemporary touch to an interior. We can print any list of places or words that resonate with your clients and also have a range of graphic layouts to offer. Coup d’Esprit tram banners are usually printed on stretched canvas. We then rework the printed surface with hand painted accents to give the canvas a one of a kind feel.

PRINT ON PLEXIGLASS Plexiglass lends itself beautifully to photography and graphic art. There is a depth to the image that occurs because you are looking at the reverse printed image through the thickness of the plexiglass itself. Depth can be heightened even more when the plexiglass is mounted at the front of a deep shadow-box frame - you get an almost 3D effect from the way light shines through and onto the back of the box. When plexiglass is mounted pressed right against a white background, the colours in the print really jump out , as if lit from the back.

THE BACK OF THE FRAMES As a standard, we velvet tape the edges and install a hook and wire for hanging. Let us know how you want your frames made. We are keen to please!
PACKING
We have developed individual product packing that strong enough for mail order deliveries. We frame our art with glass and wood frames and our packaging will withstand 1.5 meter drop testing without a scratch. We are also prepared to customize your packaging with your logo and labelling. If you prefer wood crating or palette wrapping, just let us know.
