preface As per NIFT’s curriculum, all F&LAD students have to undergo a graduation project which is a full-scale design project that could either can be a personal intervention or could be in the industry. The project is targeted to generate professional design skills and achieve an outcome with application and implementation capabilities. The duration of the Diploma Project is of 20-22 weeks. This project acts as an introduction to the professional world of design, intended to put the students in a real-life situation of working in the industry’s constraints and limitations. It gives the opportunity of industry and education interface by identifying areas and opportunities for development whereby students conduct research based on the industry brief and evolve and implement development strategies by utilizing the company’s strengths and design sensibilities within the boundaries of time and viability. Undergoing the project helps the student to understand the role of designer in the industry. Not only does it help to understand all the aspects surrounding the design like time management, communication skills, practical constraints, pitching ideas but also helps discover themselves by knowing their strengths and weaknesses. My graduation project was sponsored by Titan Company Limited, Bangalore. The project extended for a period of five and a half months from December’17 to May’18.

synopsis The document shows my journey working on industry projects that I did at Titan Company Limited. I tried carrying out human centred design process to achieve an outcome. Whereas, the company wanted me to do a thorough research, exploring and documenting ideas and opportunities even outside the brief which could be reference and guide to further projects in this domain. On a personal level I wanted to learn from different design processes followed in the team. Also, to observe the design and development of different products, services and spaces in all disciplines to grow as a designer.

industrybrief To come up with exciting Hearable Tech Product, that is based on systematic research that leads to find a good use case for the end consumer. Expected Journey: Research which will include desk research for the category, the trends in it, competition study, user insight, user profiling, building scenarios, coming up with interesting use cases, ideation, concepts. Also, would require proof of concept in the end, in terms of not of the form and materials used, also tech which goes behind it.
16
17
approach The project started out with exploring the various possibilities of the brief ideations from the one-liner brief given by the industry. In order to come up with a refined initial brief a short research was done, involving trend scouting and tech study. After channelizing a brief direction, with my industry mentor, further secondary in-depth research was carried, which enable me to understand the needs and design requirements for the project, based on which the road map was designed: -Scenario and environment study -Product study -Competitor study -User research -Persona building -Scenario building -Concepts -Final proposal

Focus more: A smartphone distracts the user, demands their complete attention, which is an interruption in the user’s flow. Push notification: Making information(notification) accessible with minimal effort. Activity and Service: Receptors of vital data and services.
Automation: Making repetitive tasks easier with less human interaction. Data implementation: Using the collected data to serve the user better. Solution to ‘Basket of remotes’: Unified systems/hubs to control other servant devices.
20
more
Freedom of movement: Without wires/less wires on the body despite of any activity. Better data collection: Biometric data is highly reliable also has better response time. Minimal distraction: Low grade of overall distraction compared to visual and tactile interaction on smartwatches.
Precision is the key: Medical grade data receptors Specifics: Specifically made to monitor and sense
Comfortable: Smart fabrics/clothing opens a wide area for opportunities in wearables, majorly because of the comfort factor. Natural interactions: Humans feel more closer to clothing than an external device. 21

productstudy Every product is designed in a particular way - product analysis enables us to understand the important materials, processing, economic and aesthetic decisions which are required before any product can be manufactured. An understanding of these decisions can help us in designing and making for ourselves. And in order to design a wearable product I had to understand a major tech category. But, with my existing knowledge and interest in technology made it easier to analyze these products. For this study I’m majorly looking at three aspects: Hardware, Software and overall user experience. And for the conclusion I’ve referred few papers online on the same matter. For the duration of my Graduation Project I’ve used several products and analyzed them. Here’s the list of the products: Smartwatches/bands 1. Garmin Fenix 3 2. Uwear 3. Young’s hybrid 4. Titan Juxt pro 5. Martian Notifier 6. Sony Smartband SWR10 7. Timex Blink 8. Suunto Spartan Smart speaker: 1. Amazon echo dot 2. DIY Google assistant on Raspberry Pi Truly wireless earbuds: 1. JBL free The reason I was studying smartwatches/bands is to understand the whole wearable ecosystem, the benefits and limitations of this category and how hearables can achieve what’s missing in the same.
23
The reason I was studying smartwatches/bands was to understand the whole wearable ecosystem, the benefits and limitations of this category and how hearables can achieve what’s missing in the same.
methodology:
I’ve used every product daily for a week and used the proprietary apps to connect to my phone(android). As I mentioned earlier this will be a brief report of my usage and the focus will be on these aspects:
hardware
software
experience
24
hardware: From the products that I’ve analyzed a major thing that I’ve observed in smartwatches is the use of lighter but stronger materials like aluminum or other light-weight alloys. But on the economical side companies are using strong plastics also (for example ABS). Coming to aesthetics brands are sticking to either current trends or their signature aesthetics.
software: The products I’ve used had their own proprietary software except for a few which uses Google’s android wear (now called as wear OS). Every brand had their own take on software, features and UI. Because of the limitations in software the product can’t deliver efficiently as expected. Some of the UI problems would be legibility and number of steps to user’s desire task.
experience: The overall experience of the products was good and would perform as advertise buy there were many things in the whole system that created problems for the users. For example, because of closed ecosystem of these products user is not able to sync the information to a centralized hub (like Apple health and Google fit).
25
competitorstudy A competitive analysis helps flesh out your business and (nonfunctional) technical goals, if not inspire new ones. What is your competitor doing that works, and where is their room for improvement – knowing these will come in handy when designing. Understanding your competition will also help understand your users. If every other product you’re up against has a certain feature, users will expect that on your product, too, for better or worse. What you discover can also provide material for your interview or survey questions, such as how they felt about this or that aspect.

userresearch To understand the all-important user requirements, I need to understand the users themselves. While there are many different methods for connecting with my target audience, simply sitting down and talking with them is one of the most reliable. The main purpose is to narrow my design focus by solidifying what my users want. The responses from my user interviews will reveal which design ideas will work, which won’t, and may even inspire new ones. The data collected from user interviews will feed directly into the creation of personas, which dictate other documents like user scenarios. For this, interviews should be as thorough as possible.
30
Personal Interviews: Personal interviews to help understand and create different personas. -Sports Freak(enthusiast) -Hearing impaired -Fitness enthusiast -Well-being
methodology:
Going Opposite: Looking for answers on the opposite side of spectrum. My juniors (now under 21 years of age) will be my target group in the next 5 years, they are associated with tech and everything that’s going around it but a key thing which is missing is ‘accessibility’. Workshop: I devised and conducted a small workshop with my college juniors to know their understanding and insight on wearable technology, also how they perceive the future of smart wearables. Steps: Step 1: Introduction to the workshop and ask for their understanding and opinions on Wearable Technology Step 2: An unbiased introduction to Wearables, their types and common features. Step 3: Ask their opinions and future of smart wearables after the presentation. Conclusion: -Data is in abundance -Make them actually ‘smart’ Interact with the user on a personal level -Make it natural (like second nature)

scenariobuilding
User scenarios create the context behind the user stories. What are the specific situations in which that user story might occur? I start to explore the user’s emotions during the process, helping to not just understand the user, but to empathize with them. So refering from Uxpin-Design Process I’ve used this template to map user’s needs and to come up with solutions.
Features Goals Essential
Sports Freak I want to(Task)
So that(goal)
Proposed solutions
Scenarios
Train daily efficiently
I can perform better in my sport
Looking at competitors like Samsung, Jabra, bragi and other concepts: A personal trainer (AI or an actual trainer’s recording) can be assigned and with this the user can perform better.
With the activity trainer user With trainer’s recorded Voice can have personalised sessions instructions which will help the user achieve her goals
*Auto detection of the activity or machine learning(by manual input)
How (theoretically)
User can start with the activity instantaneously without manually feeding the data.
I want my zone but don’t want to be vulnerable
I am aware of the outside world and still maintaining my zone
Augmented Hearing/ambient listening And should be able to listen to personal music while doing the activity.
With this feature the user can be aware of the traffic while listening to music.
Track my vitals accurately and see my friends’ stats
I can track my vitals better and know where to focus
-Products should talk to each other. Support with multiple products like smartwatches, phone, bike accessories etc.
Data from other devices can be Take support from established synced into one domain app or brands like Strava, Google fit vitals from the hearable should and other health apps. be able to export to other health apps. User will get a summarized data
-Showing the data in an understable manner(here it can have different modes to this, like PRO or something, which will be easier for the user to understand and use the data)
Noise cancellation with surround microphones
-Support with different apps can help user to keep track of others and compare stats and get better results Subtle reminders to stay active
40
So that i stay active throughout the day.
Movement detection can help the user to move constantly.

I want to be in the moment and also know whats happening(social media, texts, emails and other notifications)
I can enjoy time with my loved ones and be connected with the internet without checking phone
Subtle in-ear notifications (notifications that can be read to the user like texts) and the ability to respond to them.
When the user is at a social gathering she will only get notifications which she preferred and will be able to respond to them with voice commands or gestures. (without disconnecting from the group)
Once configured on the app the user can respond through voice commands: Which will require voice to text and several other APIs Or gestures Gestures can either be recorded by touch controls on the product or configure accelerometers to do the same.
Know how i spent my day
I can know how much time i spend on different activities
A daily activity journal (inspired from Sony’s Lifelog) which can take data from different devices and show how much time and energy is spent on different activities.
The user can see her daily activity journal, have a better analysis and make better decisions/ plans to balance her life. App may also give suggestions to put down their phone etc.
The app can take access of the phone logs like the time spent on each app and the reading from the phone’s accelerometer and hearable’s sensors. And create an interactive infographic for the user to analyse.
E.g. she can prioritize her sleep over browsing the internet.

Hey, Karthik You’re doing great but slow down for a while...
Once Astra notices that you’re slowing down it will suggest you to run to the beat (which cognitively helps the user run better) or if you’re pushing too hard, it will tell you to take it slow.
Hey Astra, How am I doing? Your pace is 25km/h, your heart rate is 110bpm. You’re close to your goal…
…now, hold this position for 2 minutes and take breathes.
Astra can also give you clear instructions on your desired activity.
