Introduction

Welcome to our new Group wide newsletter for 2013. Recently, Howard Hunt Group has been developing at a very fast pace, especially with the establishment of three new companies: ORM, Acuity and Graft. As part of our ongoing efforts to improve internal communications and keep you up to date with what’s been happening across the Group, we have launched this quarterly newsletter to all staff. It’s been another tough, challenging and rewarding 6 months for us. Our focus has been to work with our clients to improve the effectiveness of their marketing campaigns and to ensure that paper based communications remain a valuable part of the marketing mix. We have achieved this through innovation, data expertise and technology to drive efficiencies and effectiveness. With some impressive client wins, this has delivered us an improved market share in all areas. The macro economic situation continues to present both opportunities and challenges. But our continued investment strategy and our expanding portfolio of clients mean that we are in a good place to take advantage of all opportunities. We would like to thank everyone for their hard work and commitment and for their continuing support. You are all vital links in the success of the business.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on the newsletter. If you have any ideas on how we can improve it, please email us at marketing@howardhuntgroup.com

Meet the Exec Team Martin Pigott, known as Nod, is Chairman of Howard Hunt Group. Nod began his print career at a small stationery printer aged 17, but soon decided he didn’t like being ordered around and fancied being his own boss; establishing Howard Hunt in 1990. Despite being completely tee-total, Nod loves a party and rumour has it his annual Birthday Boat Party will feature in Hello Magazine this year!

Lucy Edwards has been at Howard Hunt Group since 2002, joining as Marketing Director and becoming Assistant Managing Director in 2009. Lucy is also Managing Director of Acuity and ORM. Prior to joining Howard Hunt Group, Lucy spent 7 years with Cancer Research UK as Head of Direct Marketing. Lucy makes sure that we have the resources, finances and infrastructure in place to ensure that things run smoothly and profitably. Watch her though; she’s a hockey player at weekends.

Keith Whitehead started at Howard Hunt when it was on the Old Kent Road in 1990. He is one of the longest standing employees at the firm and has done almost every job in the business from Manufacturing Manager right up to Production Director and Operations Director, finally settling as Commercial Director. Keith’s second job is a kitchen installation advisor (feel free to ask him why) and his idea of perfection is a game of Golf and a Budweiser.

Andy Palin is Finance Director at Howard Hunt Group. Andy has over 30 years’ management accounting experience in the printing, mailing and communications industry. Andy graduated from Southampton University in 1979 and then trained with Chartered Accountants BDO in London. He joined Howard Hunt in 2005 as a financial controller before becoming Group Finance Director. He also likes to see himself as the earlier Andy Murray – a hotshot on the tennis court!

Luke Pigott is CEO of Howard Hunt Group. He started his career in Sales, becoming Sales Director in 2002 and CEO in 2009. His business acumen and ambition have seen the Group expand under his leadership from a print and direct mail business to a European Marketing Services Provider. Luke is here to inspire, motivate and make sure that we are strategically on the right track. He’s also an avid Spurs fan, but don’t let that put you off.

Danny Clarke joined Howard Hunt Group in 2004 as Sales Director for Howard Hunt and Celerity Communications. Danny has succeeded in winning a number of blue chip clients for the Group including Tesco, Everest and NSPCC. He was promoted to the Board in 2011 and became Managing Director of new outsourcing company Graft in 2013. Danny is directly responsible for the sales team of 12. Danny is a huge Arsenal fan and owns more shoes than his fiancé. Not something a lot of people can boast!

Paul Kemp is Group Operations Director at Howard Hunt Group. Paul joined the business in 1996 when it was on the Old Kent Road to run logistics and transport. He quickly progressed to run the finishing department with Mike Pigott and then enclosing, where he was instrumental in the migration of the enclosing department to H3. He was promoted to Operations Director in 2011 and joined the Board soon after. Paul is a complete petrol-head who loves getting in a go-kart so he can pretend he’s a Grand Prix racer.

Howard Hunt Group New and Existing Business Howard Hunt Group has had a very busy quarter across new business and the existing client base. Sales and Marketing have been working hard to put together proposals for Bupa, Royal National Institute for the Blind, Direct Line Group, Hotter Shoes and Cancer Research UK. All of these businesses spend a large part of their marketing budget on print and direct mail so present large opportunities for Howard Hunt Group. New client wins in 2013 include Holland & Barrett, Hotter Shoes, Monarch, Marie Curie and Sky. We won the Age UK contract after a competitive tender process and a successful presentation from our Account Director Paul Jenkinson and Sales Director Danny Clarke. In other good news, we have reopened the RSPB account, which used to be an account of Howard Hunt a number of years ago and will be working with them to produce their print and direct mail again. Away from new business, we have also seen significant increases in work from our existing client base. Two of our largest clients, Virgin Media and Tesco, have been giving us more work and we have been winning more of their jobs, with continued effort to create further opportunities in these accounts. We have also seen more work won from John Lewis, Royal Caribbean and children’s charity NSPCC. This is testament to the hard work and service we provide these accounts and the high quality of work we produce for them. These clients are examples of happy customers, who continue to provide more work due to the quality of service they receive. Well done all.

New Investments H1 - Press Maintenance. There are currently plans being prepared to enable both the TP3000 and Diamond Press to be shut down during the April to May period. This will be for extensive and essential maintenance work that will help to increase reliability, quality and output. If this project proves successful, we will roll out this approach to maintenance across the remaining equipment. The project plan is currently being prepared by senior management, engineering and the press crew from this equipment.

H3 - Celerity Communications have invested in a second Xerox Igen 4 Digital press to add to the existing fleet of equipment. This technology was chosen for its high quality, its ease of use and the cost per page model for high coverage products. The investment will help us target the growing one piece mailer market with a cost effective solution.

H2 - Finishing. We have recently taken the decision to invest in some additional ancillary finishing and stacking equipment that will reduce our maintenance bill as well as increase our equipment uptime. A further substantial investment has been made in a new full width duplex tower with 8 Kodak 9100 series heads that will enable us to make new products and enter new markets. The installation of these heads is planned for later in April.

AB Samples and File Copies AB samples and file copies are an important part of any job. They are shown to the client as a representative example of the live run prior to release into the mailing system. Clients and their senior management will use the AB samples as an indication of the quality of our work and may accept or reject a job based upon them. This means they must be given maximum priority and be of the highest quality in terms of print and finishing. We cannot afford to get these wrong.

Group News ORM’s first roundtable ORM is our Digital Agency, based on Bermondsey Street, London. They specialise in web, mobile and touch technologies. Their experience mainly surrounds designing userfriendly websites and applications for smartphones and tablets. Some of their clients include Royal Bank of Scotland, Visa, ITV and Channel 4. Howard Hunt Group acquired the company in August 2012 in order to expand our Group offering and provide further Marketing Services to our clients. On the 31st January, ORM held a roundtable at the Covent Garden Hotel. We invited current and prospective clients to meet at the hotel to discuss “How mobile is changing your marketing strategy”. Guests, including representatives from Paypal, Nectar, Save the Children, British Film Institute and Royal Bank of Scotland, attended to discuss all things mobile. ORM led with facts around market

trends, consumer behaviour and the potential of mobile as a channel. The event was a huge success, with attendees from these big brands talking to each other about their own marketing strategy around mobile. ORM have subsequently produced a whitepaper around how mobile is shaping your marketing strategy, which is available on request. Due to the success of the first roundtable, we now plan to run them for the other companies in the Group. The most recent one “What does the future hold for CRM?” was held with Celerity Information Services on the 11th April.

Howard Hunt Group launches Graft Howard Hunt Group is pleased to announce that we have launched a new outsource business this quarter - Graft. Officially kicking off from 1st April, Graft will provide a service to our clients in procuring printed products and merchandise that Howard Hunt cannot produce in-house. Items could include anything from Point of Sale material for in-store to branded stationery. The launch means that Howard Hunt Group can further strengthen its position as a single source supplier for all our client’s marketing requirements. The Graft team will be based at ORM’s office on Bermondsey Street (SE1) and will initially launch with two highly experienced commercial individuals; Nick Middleton and Ross Buthee. In addition, 12

Jonathan Dalton has done a fantastic job of producing a new exciting brand for Graft including the above logo and branding. The company will have a service based, can-do attitude when it comes to helping our clients and will work hard to procure the highest quality products at the most cost effective price.

Celerity’s Exceptional New Email Services Celerity have recently launched new email services. These services use the design expertise of our new digital agency ORM and the expert email build team at Celerity. As you may have noticed, more and more people are viewing their emails on smartphones, tablets. The way that emails look on these different devices can vary greatly – with some looking very squished and hard to read.

in terms of copy, design and display. ORM can help with the redesign and the email team at Celerity then build the email so it displays correctly across all devices. The process behind this is termed responsive – meaning the email automatically responds to the device it is being viewed on and displays copy and imagery differently.

This is a problem for brands sending emails to their customers and prospects as many consumers will simply ignore or delete an email that does not display correctly. Celerity’s new services include a full evaluation of a brand’s emails to show how they could be improved

New Starters and Leavers This quarter Howard Hunt Group has welcomed Jonathan Dalton as a Marketing Consultant to lead the brand development project across the group. Jonathan has already produced a new logo and brand guidelines for our new company Graft and is working on brand development and new websites for the entire group. We also welcomed Khilan Shah to our Commercial team. Khilan is our new Scheduling Manager, working alongside Richard and Alex to support the Scheduling Team. Khilan joined us from MBA where he worked in Scheduling for six years. We also have new recruits in manufacturing: Adam Phillips, Ehret Line Operator and Paul Freeman, Kodak/Prosper Operator.

Sam joined us from Oakwood Park Grammar School and will be focusing on generating new leads and developing new opportunities for Celerity IS. Howard Hunt Group would also like to bid a fond farewell to Danny Butcher, Joe Hearne and Vicktor Levcenko who are leaving H3.

It is with great sadness to announce the sudden passing of Steven Toghill on 13th February. Steven, aged 53, known more fondly as Toggy, worked at the company for 23 years, joining Howard Hunt when it was based on the Old Kent Road in 1990. The photo opposite is Steven on one of his beloved holidays. Toggy was an avid Arsenal fan, often found watching both home and away games with his son, David. He was also known to play a little rugby, although was very much an amateur! Toggy married his wife, Beverly, over 25 years ago and they have two lovely children –Nicola and David. He was a hardworking family man, who was friends with everyone and a highly valued employee within the print night shift. He will be sadly missed.
