Northwell Health Katz Women’s Hospital and Zuckerberg Pavilion New Hyde Park, NY
A curved glass façade gives this women’s hospital a generous and expansive appearance, and its syncopation of vertical elements reflect the diverse functions housed within. The facility consolidates women’s services, improving efficiency and providing a high degree of patient- and family-focused care. The 300,000 square-foot tower serves as a striking new ‘front door’ for the 48-acre Northwell Health (formerly North Shore Long Island Jewish) Campus. The building’s geometry is based on the ancient vesica piscis, a fertility symbol with overlapping circles. This creates two convex surfaces – one facing the facility’s entrance, the other facing its main tower. Inside, the curved design helps mitigate the endless corridors so common in medical buildings. To bring an added level of comfort, the interior is modeled after residential and hotel design. Single-occupancy birthing suites allow for overnight stays for new fathers, while large lounges provide space for additional family members. Almost all patient rooms have views of a neighboring meadow.
