SY R I A A PL AC E BEYOND DISPL ACEMENT MASTER DESIGN RESEARCH / April 2021

In a state of emergency with multiple transitions and disorientation disasters, wars and political conflicts have resulted in a humanitarian crisis and the displacement of more than 11 million people in the Syrian Arab Republic, transforming their homes, livelihoods, and lives of individuals (UNESCO) This design-led research investigation argues that the fields of architecture and preservation can contribute to a tailored experiential story of war-torn heritage sites by managing, manipulating, and renewing the build conditions, to sustain a place and its cultural identity. As a design-led research thesis, the research focuses on the design exploration of post-conflict preparations. This alternative narrative reconsiders design thinking as a tool for intervention, mutual collaborations, tactics, and policies that can be more actively employed during times of conflict, safeguarding the site’s historical narrative while envisioning a more pragmatic solution for a reality affected by the war.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE To cover the need for the city, existing plans for those buildings are not kept the same way. The goal was to essentially create a form without a predetermined program that made the design distinctive, demanding the invention of new programs corresponding to the new, post-war conditions. The idea was to restore ‘normalcy’ (Woods 6), where the normal is the new way of living lost due to the war. The design also took into consideration the balance between old and new functions within the structure. Thus, retaining its spatial composition and material (plain concrete). A distinctive geometric form that was drawn from the design was the circular shape. The plan acts as a monumental scale that represents the structure of time between old and new. The initial motive began as a structure that can juxtapose the overall environment while acting as the heart for the urban design. Its meaning is derived from the concept that it has no beginning and no end; it replicates itself, and it ends where it started. The interior of this circular space would become the embodiment of absence (the absence caused by the war). On the other hand, the exterior becomes the breaking point that neglects traditional ways of rebuilding.

What was important for this thesis was highlighting the importance of the role architecture has in determining the unpredictable. Social and symbolic connotations characterize a programmatic sequence that is not based on predetermined functions but instead becomes a series of halting points where events occur, more like a family of spatial issues linked by continuous movement. This movement is framed each time by cultural information. Thus, courtyards, public spaces and can characterize their true history. Answering the thesis question, it is essential for future generations not to imitate the structure but instead recreate the spontaneity of events and rituals, which is the substance of any city’s matter.

The New Zealand School of Music re-imagines Marion and Swan street as a creative hub for musicians alike. The interior form is softened by the space-frame façade which envelopes the four faces of the design. By regressing the ground floor inward, the threshold between the exterior and interior is obscured to emulate the malleable characteristics of the façade. Each interior space follows a modular archetype that corresponds to the layout of the structural grid. These spaces include teaching/practice areas, a library and two auditoriums. The main auditorium is designed to show diverse angles of the stage which exposes three sides to the audience. This layout centralises the performer within the space where a three-dimensional performance can be exhibited.

The community centre proposal for Boulcott Street, Wellington, operates around the connection between design and people. The ideology is that human interaction can determine how people feel about the space against nature and architecture. The design would create a space for people to socialize by maintaining the communal social approach to the plan. The spatial arrangement of the invention would remain simple by focusing on three different areas the main social space, the core and the auditorium.
